It's actually more nuanced than Khamzat dominating and then KOing him with a punch. That wild, hard upper cut that ended Ikram COULD easily have been thrown by Ikram himself. Fact of the matter is, Khamzat simply couldn't take Ikram down, something Khamzat never had problems with any other opponent, including an actual really big, strong, and elite wrestler like Usman. Anyway, after Khamzat couldn't take Ikram down, after some attempts, they went back to swinging. BOTH WERE STILL LESS TECHNICAL, 5 years ago, so they simply swung at each other hard. Ikram simply happened to be the guy who stepped forward and onto Khamzat's fist from below. Again, if that fist was Ikram's, Khamzat still wouldn't have "lost" that much credit, since the fight was very competitive until that hard swinging upper cut landed. April 2019, when it happened, to late June, 2024, is a long time for improvement from elite fighters. He was 25+ then. Now, he's 31. The guy has put in a 7-win streak since. This is NOT to say he's going to have any easy or easier time against a former champ who, at 33, has many years of more experience fighting true elites at 185, from elite strikers like Izzy to elite wrestlers like Yoel to all those in between, like Paula, DDP, et al. But it is to say, Ikram isn't going to be a walk in the park. For some fighters, you simply have to ignore their official ranking. Islam was tough when he was below #15, as when he was #13, & as when he was #5. In fact, Robert THINKS Ikram's LEVEL OF WELL ROUNDEDNESS makes him tougher. Everyone knows, for example, it is very tough dealing with Khamzat the first one-two rounds; but if you survive those initial minutes, Khamzat gets tired. Ikram may not show that level of initial ferocity, in wrestling; but he could more evenly fight for many rounds, dangerous in every round, everywhere, from striking to offensive wrestling, to BJJ maneuvers, due to his Sambo (Judo, BJJ, and Greco wrestling) skills....
