It's nice he got full credit for frequent flyer miles from United. Such a "nice touch." I was expecting to see scraps of the airplane the passenger kept.

This appears to be an excerpt from a longer interview. Passengers would not have been allowed to keep any pieces of the airplane -- nor would anybody else. The National Transportation Safety Board takes custody of every scrap of the plane that can be discovered to help in their analysis of the accident. Even tiny bits of metal, plastic or glass might turn out to be important in figuring out what went wrong.
Once the dust clears, the airline will return any personal belongings to the passenger who owns them, if that ownership connection can be traced. Not clear whether any of the items in Bob Ryan's collection fall in this category.

Think it's a response to something that seems so bizarre that you can't believe it happened. Holding on to something tangible seems like a way to help show yourself proof .. yes this happened.
