On "My Car Story" we're in the Suburbs of Phoenix AZ on 1-3-21.
We're looking at a 1947 Cadillac Series 62 2 Door Sedanette in Dover Gray Paint. The car comes with the factory 246 CI “Flat Head” V8 engine which produces 150 HP.
The car's Owner is Ed Winkler. Ed’s had this car since 2005. He shares he was looking for a comfortable, yet sporty looking car to drive on a 2000 mile tour with his wife.is car. When he saw this car, this one met his requirements. This car has just over 76,000 original miles.

Amazing that these cars were truly hand built and hand stamped by a machine fabricator. The cars were first designed on paper-hand drawn and engineered-then molded into a clay form to have a true dimensional representation. Then fabricated by hands on machines. No computers, just plain old brain cells and the hands of true craftsman. Amazing. Did you notice the curved wood dash with a compound curve. Hand carved.

I can almost hear the 1947 style music watching this. The color reminds me of War times.. maybe an elite general would have picked this car. My oldest brother was born Christmas eve 1947, the dude is still working full time operating logging equipment, he cant seem to give it up. He always was a cant sit long kind of guy. lol, dragging me around with him in the woods as a kid being the boss man, and me the slave. haha.

The war was over in 1945.
Thanks to Ed for sharing this beautiful piece of history! Early Hydramatics were indeed 4 speeds. The very low starting ratio was used because they did NOT have a torque converter... just a two element fluid coupling that did not multiply torque as a converter does. BTW... The Cadillac flathead V8 was 347 cubic inches!

And the Hydramatic fluid coupling with 4-spd gearbox was a much more efficient system than GM's early torque converter trannies, the notoriously sluggish and slippery Dynaflow & Powerglide!

Now, I have always been a huge fan of the 60s and 70s muscle era, but there is no denying the beauty of this era. Especially the Caddies. Even being pre-fin, it just grabs your attention. Great example of a very nice, low milage, original. Also, once again you made me jealous by being able to experience driving such a great classic. Ed is a great guy for allowing you the chance. Love the torpedo shape of the rear, amazing how rudimentary the trunk is, trunk crest is very jewel like. Definitely a car with an attitude! Pontoon fenders really stand out! Egg crate grille very cool! Car reminds me of Art Deco detailing and it’s powered by V8. Another home run Lou!

The above shares every piece of sheet metal with Pontiac sedanette. Different grille, tail lights, L-head V-8 instead of L-head straight 8. Cad, Oldsmobile and Pontiac all offered HydraMatic.

Same as the '42 and '46 with minor changes
All of the GM divisions has those BEAUTIFUL “fastback”
designs in the late 40’s, but the Caddy was the one with the flathead V8. All of the premium divisions had inline-8’s (Buick’s was OHV! - like the “Rain Man” car), but the Caddy was special with its V8 (until both Olds and Caddy introduces OHV V8’s in ‘49).
This is a great channel, bringing back all of these wonderful memories !

@@loucostabilein my diecast room I have a 1/43 scale road signatures 1949 Cadillac coupe deville convertible light blue metallic and I absolutely love it than I have several 1/64 scale Cadillacs that very from the 50s through the 60s and a blue 1/18 scale blue 1958 Cadillac Eldorado biarritz convertible and a white 1959 1/18 scale Cadillac Eldorado biarritz and I have a matchbox 1/64 scale 1941 Cadillac series 62 in black and I have so many other classic diecast cars that it's getting hard to name them all we haven't even got to all my muscle cars yet because I have so so so much of them and classic diecast cars from movies I have both the Bullitt mustang and charger in 1/64 scale and both bandit trans am cars in 1/24 scale 1 is the 77 from the 1st movie and 2 is the 80 turbo trans am from smokey and the bandit part 2 and the general lee in 1/18 scale and have a 1959 Cadillac Eldorado hotwheel in white a purple 56 Eldorado convertible 1/64 scale matchbox and a matchbox 1/64 scale red 56 Eldorado convertible a green matchbox 69 sedan deville 1/64 scale matchbox and a 1980 Cadillac seville 1/64 scale hotwheel

Ed is a great caretaker for this classic.
I often imagine what is was like for cars when they were originally bought. I can’t help but to reflect how someone would have felt in 1947 picking up this car from the dealer.
The car is an interesting transition piece from the pre-war Art Deco style to the beginning of the Jet Age.

I think you know my taste by now Lou - this one gave me heart palpitations! LOL I love these '40's art-deco fastback cars. The Cadillacs are the most impressive. The car is in such fine condition and the shades of gray suit it so well. It gives it a reserved dignity. As you pointed out, I love all the little artful touches they did with cars of this period. It's something that's forgotten today.

What truly wonderful proportions! The colour, the engine, that HOOD ornament! Just so many amazing details. I would have just the fuel pump on my mantle piece! What a time to live in, where machines were still industrial, but the sensibilities of streamlining and smoothness had well and truly seeped into the metal. Like the old Fleischer cartoons when cars were depicted, you almost expect the car to squash down or ooze around with speed and cornering. Thank you for uploading.

WOW!! That is when Cadillac was truly the Cadillac of cars. GM was so far ahead in automatic transmissions that even Lincoln used them until they had something of their own.

Time has erased the memory of how advanced that Hydramatic actually was. The premium GM division were using that transmission while their competition was using crude creations that were quite poorly conceived. (Buick for some reason in that period was using that DynaFlow beast which couldn’t even compare to the Hydramatic.)
Do you remember that monstrosity Chrysler built that had a clutch pedal, a manual transmission with a torque converter?? Somehow, they expected people to see that thing as comparable to the Hydramatic, which was laughable ...
@@sking2173 My dad said it was common to replace the Chrysler Fluid Drives with a regular clutch and flywheel.
@@jwelchon2416 - Of course, that defeated the entire design purpose of that transmission, which was to free the driver (women) of having to precisely regulate the clutch engagement, which for many (women) was quite a daunting task.
Chrysler’s advertising for their Fluid Drive system most often included a depiction of the driver (always a woman - always a pretty one) happily driving their new-Chrysler-car while cheerfully thinking aloud how pleasureful it was to drive the new-Chrysler-car without the worry of stalling the engine!
Automotive engineers over the years have gone to amazing lengths at considerable expense with the sole purpose of eliminating that dreaded clutch pedal from the driving experience.
In the late 60’s, VW cobbled together a hybrid system with a similar design and purpose to that of the Fluid Drive, calling it the “Automatic Stick Shift”. They were sturdy units, and I’m sure helped sell a lot of Beetles (to women), at least in the United States.
@@sking2173 I remember the Auto Stick. Volkswagen had a clever ad on TV that featured Charlie Chan solving a crime because of the Auto Stick.
In the mid 1980's, I found a 1946 Cadillac Series 62 four door in an Orange County CA garage. It was complete, original, and in subperb condition. Been parked for 25 or so years; had done only about 40,000 miles. It required only a little work and new tires to make it roadworthy. V8 engine ran smooth and quiet.

Ft Huachuca is at 4600 ft elevation. Scottsdale is at 1250, so its way hotter and gets less rain.

You’re absolutely right !! That flathead was one of the best-in-class in America, and the OHV V8 introduced in ‘49 was years ahead of its time. It was the best of the OHV engines available for its time and for years to come.

@@sking2173 Those early Cadillac overhead V8’s had one persistent problem. The would vapor lock! People had a lot of “remedies “ but they still did it!

Oh Lou, my mother had a 1949 Oldsmobile 98 convertible with power windows. The cylinders would leak repeatedly. The last time her and my father had it repaired at dealer. A boy drove up with the car, with a motor scooter attached to the back. He came to the door and requested payment. My mother grabbed the keys out of his hands and slammed the door! He rode his little scooter away. Shaking his head. 👋

I understand that back in the day this body style was known as a Torpedo Back, at least here in Connecticut. I was about fifteen years old when Chevrolet had come out with the new Malibu in 1971 and I loved the new back end treatment on the coupe version. I commented on that to my Mom when one had appeared in traffic. I remember my Mom saying to me "That's the old Torpedo Back style from years ago."
I'm finding the car in the video interesting as based on reading I've done, it was a big deal to be able to get a brand new car in 1947, and also if someone had the money to buy a Cadillac. After the war it took the auto manufacturer's some time to change over to car production and people had to go on lists to buy a new car because the auto manufacturer's couldn't keep up with demand. Bear in mind that auto production had shut down for four years during the war effort. And back then a four year old car was considered an old car. The newest car's around at the war's end were 1941 models, unless someone was lucky enough to have purchased one of the few 1942 models that had been built before the change over to war production. As a result America's privately owned car's were an old fleet with many dating back into the 1930's. Even by 1950 there were people still waiting for a new car. Adding to the shortage was Chrysler's late return to building cars because of government obligations that ran longer than the other manufacturer's. Though Chrysler did have some cars in production by sometime in 1946 they weren't able to bring a new model to market until part way into the 1949 model year.
Under the hood of the car in this video I can easily see that it looks the same as a 1941 Cadillac in a collection that I'm familiar with. And so too with the dashboard and interior. The reason is that after the war, in order for the manufacturer's to build car's as fast as possible they had no choice other than to build warmed-over 1942 models. "Warmed-over" being just slight changes to differentiate from the 1942 versions.
This car in the video is remarkably quiet and smooth given the decades that have passed and all the awful things that could have happened to it. I have to give the owner's a big thank you for the care this car has had and in keeping it original.

Beautiful. I think I prefer the two-tone paint on Art's 1942 Cadillac. I did notice a couple of minor differences between the '42 and the '47. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the hood ornaments seem different, as is the badge on the trunk lid. So glad that you are able to travel long distances to make videos of these 'historic' automobiles. This out classes 2 cars i grew up with but love the memory lane bit.
First, a '47 Chevy sedan my Dad would sometimes bring home from the garage he worked at part time in the early '60s. I was like 5 at the time. Nick name the Buzz Bomb. Muffler trouble ;). I still remember what it smelled like. Loved this car !
Second, '49 Pontiac Silver Streak. Total party car in the mid '70s. I believe a 389 was under the hood.
man, about 10 years ago, i was sitting on a bench by the 'bay' and heard something good.
Look around and its a Silver Streak style but green. First i'd seen in nearly 40 years.

First one was a 41 Cadillac then a couple years later there was a 46 Buick Super eight. The one I was so close to buying was a Pontiac with it’s original straight 8 and transmission plus original keys!!! That was about three to almost four years ago. Really sad I couldn’t get any of them! But really loved seeing this beautiful one on your video! Thank you Lou for sharing it!!!

Wow that is one big piece of iron! My gosh I loved that sloping back and that interior was the boss. I enjoyed the ride along a lot and I really liked the owner and his knowledge of his cars that to me makes it so much more fun and interesting. Such a outstanding unit Lou and thanks for sharing!

A very nice 1947 classic, its represents cars from a very time for I was born in 1947, and the first car I remember in my family was a 1947 Packard 4 door sedan, very similar styling. Thanks again Lou, another great one to share.

A/C would have been exceedingly rare in 1947, even on a Cadillac. I don't think it was even offered. It's not mentioned in the 1946 brochure. It didn't start to be a popular option until nearly 10 years later.
