I think you're onto something with that note about Nickelodeon ordering so many episodes in a Season. The writers may have a very limited amount of time to write an episode or a season, so they may rush them out in order to reach a deadline. They may not have enough time to go back over an episode after its finished. This is why I'm glad the next few Seasons won't have a ton of episodes in them. While the SB crew will also be working on the third film, they'll probably have more time to fix mistakes and improve the quality. At least I hope so.
While I'll admit that this is subjective, I can assure you almost every SB fan feels that a bad SB episode will contain at least one of the following: - Unfunny jokes - Characters being derailed (without some sort of humorous comeuppance or any of the sort - Recycled plots (can be seen especially with Face Freeze) - Excessive torture of characters without it coming off over-the-top or them deserving of it I'm mostly similar. For anyone who uses these criteria for bad episodes, they won't enjoy most of what comes from Seasons 6-8.
***** I dunno. With the later seasons being much more grotesque (sometimes reaching Ren and Stimpy levels), it's kinda hard to plant the later seasons as being toned down for kids.
Nickelodeon just keep demanding too much episodes from the writers to handle so they end up rushing out stories and use rip offs because they're easier to write
EB The Original Master Thankfully this doesn't seem to be the case with Season 9 (and perhaps also Season 10). Speaking of which, what seems to be the general opinion of Season 10 so far?
A combination of: -Writers running out of ideas -Less than subpar jokes (if there are jokes) -Bad joke delivery -Boring plots (often recycled over and over) -Characters acting...out of character -choice of background music -everyone is an asshole (like every background character looks dead inside) -horrid pacing Also, it just seems like Spongebob is an annoyance to everyone. Like, before Spongebob was just a fun, happy-go-lucky character that everyone loved, while Squidward was being a no fun, stick-in-the mud. Now it seems like the writers wrote Spongebob to be intentionally annoying, while the characters around him deal with him.
(read in snobby voice) accurately the picture on the thumb nail is rectangular so it;s just a rectangular theory and not a square theory so get it right okay (by the way if you coulden't tell this is a joke so don't get offended)
I`d say the root cause for why SpongeBob Episodes Turn Out Bad is basically passionless writting ( It`s just a stupid kids cartoon, I want my pay check, lets just drabble something together quickly so we can leave for today and go for a drink), you can`t deny that some of season 5-7 episodes were obviously conceived with mostly apathy and no vision (Atlantis Squarepantis, Pest of the West,Waiting, ect), and of course there`s the overbearing executive meddling (We want 44 episodes for this season, and 3 tv movies, you have 17 days to come up with all of them! Go!Go!) and it`s no secret that Nick only cares about the profit the show makes and not about the quality of the show itself. Also the show, much like a person reaching their senior years, is showing it`s age, loosing it`s shine and energy and getting worn out and sapped dry more and more ,that`s probably also a major root cause.
@rev I agree with you for season 9A but not season 9B. I know ppl can say this is subjective BUT the characters aren't FLANDERIZED and sponge bob isn't an ignorant moron like he was in "A pal for Gary".
I can say I understand this, I liked the snail race, while I didn't like spongebob's cruelty. I did like the rest of the jokes in the episode, such as the misspellings of Squidward's last name (not to mention how relatable that is for most of us) and "you have a snail made of bread?"
What is with modern sponge bob and its fascination with gore and disturbing animation. (like the toe nail scene in house fancy or The Splinter) also, why do they think that putting squid ward at the end of their jokes automatically makes them funny? these squidward torture porns (and torture porns in general) are usually awful. post-movie sponge bob is pretty bad (and the fact that they are now reusing many old plots from older episodes shows that they are running out of ideas)
The problem with A Pal For Gary, at least from what I can see is that this sorta joke, with Character X beating up on Character Y and yet Character Y is the only character who sees just how bad Character X is, has been done so many times in all sorts of cartoons and anime, and yet SpongeBob is, as far as I'm aware, the only one to get it completely wrong. Normally, the aforementioned scenario ends with Character X being caught in the act, everyone realises that Character Y was telling the truth and then the day is saved. If SpongeBob had confronted Puffy instead of yelling at Gary, it would have fitted this end perfectly. There is an alternate ending, though. There, Character Y manages to defeat Character X without anybody else knowing, therefore leaving nobody none-the-wiser. If SpongeBob had been incapacitated just before he broke into the kitchen...say, for example, having the door being knocked on top of him, and then by the time he'd recovered, Gary had already driven Puffy off, it would have fitted that end perfectly. A Pal For Gary, however, tried to combine these two scenarios. Which is impossible.
My top best episodes: 10: Graveyard Shift 9: Jailbreak! 8: Help Wanted 7: Pizza Delivery 6: The Camping Episode 5: Frankendoodle 4: Chocolate With Nuts 3: Krusty Krab Training Video 2: Suction Cup Sympothy 1: Band Geeks! Sorry if your favorite wasn't on here :(
Why I think the joke about mr.krabs "being a robot" works is because at the beginning of the episode, mr.krabs said to be alert and spongebob went overboard with XD it's simple and works
This was a great video. I feel like there's more you could've talked about. But I can't put my finger on it. Anyway great video, I actually learned a lot.
I think he used that as an example because he did a collab with mr. Enter and they both agreed to disagree. And they used that episode. Mr.enter and pie guy have different opinions on certain episodes some of the ones mr.enter hates pie guy likes and some of the ones pie guy hates mr.enter likes. It's all about how the jokes hit wit you and your opinions on whether it was or wasn't funny.
This is a fantastic video, I love how open minded you are and how you think the writers had good intentions. But I still find it questionable that Squidward is still being tortured for no legitimate reason after a lot of the fans have stated many times that they don't like seeing that. If the writers cared about the fans why would this still happen?
My theory on this topic is how Nickelodeon doesn't care and since they're so greedy with Spongebob, they force the writing staff to get these episodes out ASAP because "the fans want more Spongebob." Since the production crew and writers were forced and being under pressure by Nickelodeon, they barely have the time to look over the problems with the episodes, feeling burnt out during Spongebob's dark years (Season 6 and 7) or given the time to add jokes, thus giving us stinkers like All That Glitters, Spongehenge, Face Freeze, and Choir Boys.
PieguyRulz, I half agree on you, Just because an episode is funny, that doesn't mean is good by any means. Yes comedy is an important thing needed to the series, but is not enough, it also need smart writing and likeable characters to complete it.
Maybe one of the writer's said to the animators to make a scene where Squidward's toenail was ripped off, and it translated to the animators as being this painful and overly detailed image that was their opinion of what it looked like.
If only Nick created ONLY one more SpongeBob season that tied up every loose end, such as Spongebob's driving licence, Plankton becoming a good person, Mr. Crabs officially retiring, Squidward being happy, ect.
They turn out bad, cause the writers just forget about how SPONGEBOB was as A whole, how spongebob Was a great series, they forget how creative those writers were. Now they can just write something stupid, erie or just totally dark overall (like spongehenge) and just not care, It just went downhill at season 5. they just stopped caring overall.
Buuut...As I don't care about how erie or stupid it is, (well I do.) But it can't just get out of hand. A couple of spongebob ep's did it right but the rest are just...trash. Ta' be honest, the shining point in spongebob, Is the background music, and the music overall, Spongebob is still everything to me, but it just doesn't shine out now, than the older times, I just HOPE it gets better over time in the last seasons of the show. Hope it goes out with A bang.
I think that its more funny when the characters ignore some big evil, although its pretty obvious, rather than ignoring something that they claim to love so much
There's something about the disgusting episodes like To Love a Party. Children like being disgusted, and they are Nicks main audience. But for adults, it is the worst. They focus on the kids far too much. What about older audiences? I agree on this a lot. Well done :)
I know everybody is going to make this damn comparison but it's definitely interesting to see how PieGuy's opinions differ from MrEnter. I feel like Enter thinks more with his heart, often basing opinions on the subjection within the episode which is why I feel he doesn't like episodes like I'm with Stupid and the joke from Karate Star. PieGuy however thinks a lot more with his head and bases his subjection and opinions on story telling and jokes
my brother has 20 episodes that he can't stand 20. Safe Deposit Krabs (his most hated season 9 episode) 19. I'm With Stupid (his most hated season 2 episode) 18. Big Sister Sam 17. Hey, Pieguy, this is totally unrelated to the video but can you answer this please? I'm sure you've heard about Nickelodeon's recent wave about reviving their shows as TV movies--Hey Arnold!, Legends of the Hidden Temple, and more recently announced, Rocko's Modern Life, are all returning as TV movies on Nick. Are you gonna do a first impressions or TVLog on those movies when they come out? I'd especially be curious of your first impressions of the Hey Arnold! Jungle Movie and what happened to Arnold's parents, and the Rocko's Modern Life first impressions video would be interesting. When these TV movies come out, are you gonna do first impressions or TVLog videos on them? Also, I suppose you should know that Chris Viscardi, the guy in charge of Nick's franchise properties, wants to keep doing these revivals, not as reboots but as specials, like TV movies. I think that means Nick won't be rebooting any of their shows, but only bringing them back as TV movies. That's great, and certainly better than what a *certain OTHER NETWORK IS DOING.* Also, he promised us Nick would only bring them back if they have the original creators back, so they won't do these TV movies unless they have the creators back. And if these TV movies turn out to be successful (which they probably will considering they'll definitely pull in Nick high-ratings), they're gonna keep doing these. So be prepared to see Nick revive any of their old shows as a TV movie at any moment. So what do you think of that, Pieguy? Nick is gonna do these revivals of their old shows ONLY as TV movies and not as series reboots and ONLY if the original creators are involved. Isn't that awesome? And again, are you gonna do first impressions videos/TVLogs on these TV movies when they come out? Thanks.
Hey PieGuy, I feel that the choice of background music is an under-looked reason why the show feels different. There are a lot of background songs that made scenes feel as if they were funnier in the older episodes. They've been using a lot of new bgm that I find really annoying. Especially the stuff with the harpsichord. They don't use stuff like "Wooden Bear", "Witty Fellow", "Tomfoolery", or "Speaking Guitar". This is a really little detail, but I think it worth some mentioning.
While I did enjoy this video in being respectable in not playing the blame game, it still confuses me that while animation is highly collaborative and has room for mistakes, those mistakes are more prevalent later on, despite a different set of people with fresh jokes working on it. Most people watching can agree it's boring or has specific weaknesses like unjust torment of Squidward, or Plankton using the same plot to get the formula, or underusing more complex stories for specials. They're very repetitive issues, and with so many people there, I would think someone in the industry would catch it and help rethink solutions. It's generally agreed pre-movie lacked these problems. What do you think happened later in the run?
I would indeed blame the production aspects for most problems in TV shows. Especially the things that seem obvious. Something similar happens with video games, you notice a bug but it's too late to fix so you have to ship with that bug, you see a mechanic that isn't working and can't scrap it in time. It's only recently that companies have been trying to actually figure out ways to keep costs lower while maintaining the quality or the proper workflow. For example there's Dice LA and for animation, Illumination Entertainment who can make movies with Pixar quality animation in less than half the cost while having the same director and staff on board, Pixar has to rotate.
I really wanted to like the fortune cookie spongebob episode, but that one moment when Mr. Krabs stole all of Squidwards award money made me pissed off and to angry to care about the episode.
You mean "lame and fortune"? Personally, like every other season 9b episode, I found it hilarious. But the show now has itself in a difficult position. After season 6 things changed for the show. Now they have to be careful with jokes made at a character's expense after everything we've previously been subjected to. Personally, I found the joke funny, but it was taking Squidward's suffering a little too far. But I think after that, they finally figured out how to do it, especially in the episode "Food con castaways" with the exhaustion pipe gag.
Yeah, I too look forward to those. Bizarro takes a little longer than BOTB because he has to find an opposite episode to each BOTB, but still I also wish for more.
It's interesting how, because you're basically enjoying Someone Else's problem with the episode or vice versa, you wouldn't be able to tell on your own Why People disagree with you on the episode!
even if you did like the joke of sponge bob unaware of the world around him in a pal for Gary because most of the episode's jokes is that joke over and over and over again so even if you find the joke funny usually sense the episode's jokes are just that joke so you will most likely will stop laughing at the joke because it's so repetitious so it becomes predictable and when a joke is predictable it's not and I repeat not funny and scene there's noting else to balance it out you'll get annoyed and bored of the only joke
I actually kinda prefer Piecons over live-action reviews. They're more expressive and allow for easier editing. Definitely wouldn't mind seeing this format more for Square Theories.
These are pretty good points. I guess I would laugh at Patrick chopping a baby if I saw it at a different time rather than when I did. Real life events can effect a joke's tasted. An example could be a whacky scene where someone accidentally flies a plane into a tower due to the craziness happening would be funny before 9/11, while after the joke would not fly (get the pun?).
Hey PieGuy, do you watch the Simpsons? If you do, I think it weould be really cool if you made a "every simpsons episode" review similar to your Spongebob ones.
I feel like a lot of it comes down to low production values. The way a lot of the new episodes look and present themselves feel off a lot of the time. Even the voice actors don't seem to be putting as much effort in it.
Its been bad since the early 2000's, show has been dragged out for so long and is marathoned constantly that they may as well call Nickalodeon Spongelodeon
Yes I know, and the original guy who did this show left and another guy stepped in making lots of changes to the show, such as making Spngebob into a bigger crybaby, making Mr. Krabs greedier, making Patrick even dumber and so on
I think you're onto something with that note about Nickelodeon ordering so many episodes in a Season. The writers may have a very limited amount of time to write an episode or a season, so they may rush them out in order to reach a deadline. yeah this writing a show not colleague homework there shouldn't be such harsh deadlines
While I'll admit that this is subjective, I can assure you almost every SB fan feels that a bad SB episode will contain at least one of the following:
- Unfunny jokes
- Characters being derailed (without some sort of humorous comeuppance or any of the sort
- Recycled plots (can be seen especially with Face Freeze)
- Excessive torture of characters without it coming off over-the-top or them deserving of it
I'm mostly similar. For anyone who uses these criteria for bad episodes, they won't enjoy most of what comes from Seasons 6-8.

I wouldn't at all be against that theory.
In fact... Nick is the one to blame here
Finally some who knows it Nicks fault instead of blaming the show.
I agree. The writing in SpongeBob in the newer episodes is just rushed, no time taken.
EB The Original Master Thankfully this doesn't seem to be the case with Season 9 (and perhaps also Season 10).
Speaking of which, what seems to be the general opinion of Season 10 so far?
A combination of:
-Writers running out of ideas
-Less than subpar jokes (if there are jokes)
-Bad joke delivery
-Boring plots (often recycled over and over)
-Characters acting...out of character
-choice of background music
-everyone is an asshole (like every background character looks dead inside)
-horrid pacing
Also, it just seems like Spongebob is an annoyance to everyone. Like, before Spongebob was just a fun, happy-go-lucky character that everyone loved, while Squidward was being a no fun, stick-in-the mud. Now it seems like the writers wrote Spongebob to be intentionally annoying, while the characters around him deal with him.
But hey, that's just a theory... A SQUARE THEORY! Thanks for watching!
This needs to be his new outro
no no no etc.
I hate that catchphrase
Is PieGuy now going to give the Pope a Spongebob DVD set?
What does that have to do with the topic of the video?
Who else would I be talking to? -_-

Could you do a square theory on why spongebob is memed so often
I can say I understand this, I liked the snail race, while I didn't like spongebob's cruelty. I did like the rest of the jokes in the episode, such as the misspellings of Squidward's last name (not to mention how relatable that is for most of us) and "you have a snail made of bread?"

+Jake Pulley I can't see how that was funny, for me it was just annoying and made me want to break something at the time.
Did you hear that Rocko's Modern Life is getting a special with Joe Murray co-directing.
what? like a TV movie?
+WoodenClockwerk one hour long special
Holy crap!
+Cayman Cayleb what's #1 and #3
+Cayman Cayleb pretty good list man
PIEGUYRULZ not all SpongeBob episodes are bad season 9 episodes are improving. Also did you grow up with Pokemon and SpongeBob.
Why is there a minute and a half at the end where nothing happens
When is the next BOTB or Bizarro bakery episode?
Yeah, I too look forward to those. Bizarro takes a little longer than BOTB because he has to find an opposite episode to each BOTB, but still I also wish for more.
Agent Paradox I hope he tackles the Seddie arc real soon on BOTB.
I LITERALLY CAME TO CHECK YOUR ACCOUNT FOR NEW VIDS 5 MINUTES AGO HOW DO YOU DO THIS
It's interesting how, because you're basically enjoying Someone Else's problem with the episode or vice versa, you wouldn't be able to tell on your own Why People disagree with you on the episode!
even if you did like the joke of sponge bob unaware of the world around him in a pal for Gary because most of the episode's jokes is that joke over and over and over again so even if you find the joke funny usually sense the episode's jokes are just that joke so you will most likely will stop laughing at the joke because it's so repetitious so it becomes predictable and when a joke is predictable it's not and I repeat not funny and scene there's noting else to balance it out you'll get annoyed and bored of the only joke
I forgot to add in the episode at the end
Okay, but the ending remix for these square theories are literal bombs!
PieGuy should be on the pizza party podcast!
4:29 ~Yup, that’s definitely the case for those terrible cases alright, Pie
For some things in SpongeBob, some people laugh, and some people I imagine with a little black scribble above their head.
So when is the next Recap Square Theory?
That is a long endcard... No Yuriofwind, for certain, but still oddly long.
I like this Cartoon
Flanderization is another reason. Ex: A Day Without Tears, Night Light, Funny Pants, All That Glitters, and Waiting
2:55 mr. enter
I actually kinda prefer Piecons over live-action reviews. They're more expressive and allow for easier editing. Definitely wouldn't mind seeing this format more for Square Theories.
Man I love your end credit song XD
4:09 Acknowledgement piecon
Choir boys or atlantis squarepantis
Q: is it "picon" or "piecon".
Piecon
+PIEGUYRULZ how often do you even EAT pie my dude,
Yes, I totally agree with everything you said here. Well done Pieguy!
I prefer PieGuy form to be honest
What are your thoughts on Pokemon Go?
Pieguyrulz I'm your biggest fan!!!
So will you be doing Rick and Morty theories?
Last time I was this early I had to wait an hour to clock into work.
Did you forget your second Square Theory recap, or are you not doing that anymore?
Last time I was this early...
Ylrae siht saw I emit tsal.
I had to really read that comment to understand what the fuck that said
Last time I was this early, the "last time I was this early" comments didn't exist
+Eliza Hamilton
Geeeeeeez, no need to get offensive. Your insult is so random that it irritates me.
+Phantom UNKN0WN (#LocalizeDGS) Spong bob is cool
@@Angie-ph2wp The last time I was this late the last time I was this comments ceased existing.
Right while playing AM2R. It's worth it though. Love these videos.
Is Square Theory like your favorite side series from the Every Episode of Spongebob Reviewed series?
It takes time.
What? All I did was try to ask PieGuy if Square Theory is his favorite side series in his every episode of Spongebob reviewed series.
Nick is thinking about the money so much, that's why they're not trying.
This video in summary: "Sometimes, shit happens." XD
Hey PieGuy, do you watch the Simpsons? If you do, I think it weould be really cool if you made a "every simpsons episode" review similar to your Spongebob ones.
Does anyone know that Hooky is about heroin
man I love all of your great points, I usually agree with all of your opinions.
keep doing what your doing
I'm on time... again...
This was a pretty good rant/seductive reasoning session.
I feel like a lot of it comes down to low production values. The way a lot of the new episodes look and present themselves feel off a lot of the time. Even the voice actors don't seem to be putting as much effort in it.
Dude you have to have admit the series improve after the second movie
I don't see it. It's just just view a cespool of blandness and desperation and nothing will convince me...
Spongebob's needs to kick the bucket because it become the new Simpsons.
Electric Shifter More like the new Rugrats.
hey PIEGUYRULZ, IM YOUR BIGGEST FAN!
Does Spongehenge follow this theory as well?
You should collab with the wiiviewr
Great theory! :)
but for the most part episodes arent bad.
Krabs greedier, making Patrick even dumber and so on
+Vito Purpura He never fully left the show. He approved episode concepts.
the show died in 2005 when the fourth season came along, which was in the mid-2000's
+Nostalgia Works right
review pet sitters pat
When the season 8 review comes.
Hi
please don't say that.
+DJay Ramos why can't I say hi
I don't see the difference really the new ones are more creative. But what ever
Lazy and or Crappy writers.
This looks pretty redundant though.
Because we say they're bad
Mr. Pie, I have noticed that your SpongeBob review are getting mildly repetitive, but keep making them, maybe mix it up a bit.
Under 1000 views club!
No offense but I think the ending was too long. But great video!
Yeah it went on for a full minute ;p
Woah I got here early!
IF YOU HAVE ANOTHER PROBLEM WITH SPONGEBOB ONE MORE TIME I AM GOING TO UNSUBSCRIBE YOU AND CALL VIACOM!
Chill mang. He was just stating his genuine thoughts.
