‘I love VHS!’ Tapes experience a comeback in unusual ways

- At one time, most of us owned something that stocked our shelves. That something was a big deal for years, but one day, its era ended and off it went to garage sales and thrift stores. We’re talking about VHS tapes, and they’re making something of a comeback in some unusual ways.
I work at a thrift store, and a lot of people have been buying a lot of VHS tapes lately.
One man told me yesterday that he buys/purchases VHS tapes because of the fond memories.
Also, I wish that my apartment was big enough so that I could start re-collecting VHS tapes again. Just before Christmas of 2021, I started to collect VHS tapes and I had to give them all away two months later because of the small spaces of my apartment.
I throw out thousands of these at a time at my thrift store and watch the compactor eat them. They always make a nice crunchy sound like crushing a large box of cereal with black spaghetti guts.
I just crushed an entire 4 series of star trek tapes. There was probably more than 100 of them.
I just buy my favorite movies on vhs to convert them to digital so i can watch them on my google chromecast then i just donate the vhs tapes back to the thift shops. I love the look of old vhs movies i want to digitalize and own as much vhs movies as can but not having to deal with physically hanging onto the tapes themselves or own a vhs player
I stop at the local goodwill once a week. Vhs tapes are 2$ and i find all kinds of amazing classics and hard to find movies and shows. Its become my favorite hobby, next to comic book collecting. Its so fun and ive discovered so many amazing movies id never watch. Theres NOTHING better than booting up my 23 inch Sony CRT Tv, hearing the crunchy static, starting the vhs plaer and then getting in some warm pajamas and blankets and cozying up like its 1998. Its so fun. Its an amazing date too, try it some time. Me and my lady friend once a week pretend the goodwill is block buster, we pretend like we are renting a movie, we get popcorn and candy then go home and watch our movies, seriously try it out for date night. We are nerdy losers i know but its worth it, and shes HOT as hell too, sexy ass big booty Latina
@@integribeez4114 That's monstrous. Sell them online in lots. Weirdos like me will buy them.
I've been collecting VHS since 2020 and it's one of my favorite hobbies. I've finally ran out of room but oh man it's so satisfying to come home after a good hunt full of classics!
same!
I record all my videos to VHS on a regular basis so I felt this hard!!
There are LOTS of VHS "titles" ONLY AVAILABLE ON VHS! I LOVED THIS FORMAT!
the thing about streaming services is movies can be shelved and put behind a paywall at any time. so unfair. there really is nothing like being able to physically hold the media i'm consuming. plus the nostalgia is the cherry on top. VHS + VINYL + BOOKS FOREVER! 📼🎼📖🖤
Not just that, but their licensing are timed. If it reached its limit or if there isn’t enough viewers of watching it, they’ll pull it out of streaming services. To this day, I started collecting DVD’s to watch on my PS5 cuz f*ck licensing and streaming. Also, right now, I own a DVD & VHS player to stream and share with friends on Discord, but also, glad I can finally watch my old VHS movies like Shrek and the Indiana Jones trilogy.
@@sonicexereaper6814 I did the same and started before the Covid started, only it's DVDs and Blurays instead of VHS...
Some of them might be rare to find, and nobody plays them for quite a while on streaming service...
And they can also pull out some movies for Political Correctness, many movies we used to have were really fun and people loved them, but now, they're seen as unnacceptable to show them for a reason or another while back a while ago, such restrictions when they were originally released and made public weren't even a thing regardless of the movies...
Pisses me off big time when that happens...
The same thing to be said for CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray’s
Yeah, and paying for a streaming device and services are ussally more than cable
You forgot to mention DVDs! These are GREAT also!
I still love watching vhs tapes I still have a vcr
vhs collector here. been collecting since christmas 2020.
Protect your VHS tapes bros.
Lazarus Blackwell is right. If we don't digitize all those British VHS and audio tapes before long, they could all be spending forever in landfill! We all must preserve our video and audio memories for future generations.
@@peelp5028 Absolutely, I don't have much left anymore but I still kept them around for some reason, but there's one thing I'll always make sure to protect DVDs and Blurays and I have a lot of those, yesterday it was Vinyl, today it's VHS, tomorrow could be DVDs and Blurays, who knows...
A lot of close friends were telling me that I was going bonkers because of this, but it's still possible to have a return of the DVDs after we've seen Vinyl and VHS making a comeback, never knows...
Trash the VHS they suck!! 🗑️
One thing they forgot to mention was the fact that Vhs collecting is becoming more and more popular amongst the young. I can guarantee that as a 13 year old myself. I always find Laserdisc's, Minidisc's, VHS, Betamax, or any format that is "obsolete" to be a part of my hobby. When I was younger, I used to watch videos on youtube from Techmoan or VWestlife dreaming about the day I might get my hands on anything that had my interest. But now that I'm old enough and have money, that dream may as well come true.
BRING BACK VHS
They brought back Vinyl records so ....
i had one in 1998, I was born in 1992 so I was very young, but I threw it out after 9/11
I still have the tapes of 9/11
Don't bring back VHS it's a garbage format DVD however is way better than VHS more sharper than VHS
It's just a collectors commodity now. But I still use them because they are durable
VHS FOREVER!🤘🏻🎃📼
yes just yes :D
Yes, how people used to stream movies 🎥 back in the day.
VHS was the FIRST great video capturing format! I still LOVE it!
I haven't stopped watching VHS tapes, still have mine from when I was a kid.
Same I love classic movies Im an old millennial I too loved popping the tape in the sounds the smells when it warmed up nothing Netflix can copy. My first love of vhs was in 1987 my babysitters parents had a huge vhs collection Id plop on the floor hed say what do you want to watch Id yell Back to the Future🤘🤣 Shortly after was the Goonies and Land Before Time also🙏
I hope VHS's makes a comeback like the vinyl records are
VHS will never make a comeback, you fool. It's outdated technology. The world has evolved to higher quality and convenience with streaming and DVDs. You can't turn back time.
I believe they will make a big comeback. I bet they will even make current titles of movies in the near future. They say I'm crazy for thinking that way but who cares.Whatevers old always becomes new again.Look at vinyl records. 👍🏻🙂
Right, @@PlayitagainVHS?! How would you release them again? Me, I'd experiment with a movie that just came out of theaters. Example, Dune: Part 2. Have that movie come out on VHS
no!! bluray is better vhs is garbage
It's 2024 and VHS tapes are going up in price at my local thrift shop again. The VHS and DVDs are switching places in the prices.
Power Of Nostalgia And Nostalgic
VHS forever!
I don't need the digital streaming garbage its so boring just to rent a movie online
I hope VHS makes a comeback
It's starting to make a slow comeback. In time it will come back.👍🏻🙂

I love VHS! These may have not provided "the best quality" picture, BUT they were A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT!
Only real ones know the struggle of having to rewind the whole tape back to the beginning 😅💪🏽
Nothing bad about that, the show in there makes it worth the trouble, also, some movies that were out there on VHS have never been sold ever again even on DVDs let alone blurays for a few reasons, one of them probably over censorship, I've seen something like that, a movie of the "What If ??" that might have been a big hot potato, the reason they stopped publish it were seriously obvious and highly controversial, I've never seen this movie ever again...
Yeah lol :D
One time my brother watched a vhs never rewined 8t so i had to rewind it when i wanted to watch it again back in early 2000s😂
As well as the tapes getting eaten and having to use a head cleaning cassette 📼, that was the real struggle right ✅️ there.
I use vhs all the time and rewinding is so easy. Just push stop and then push rewind. The vcr stops when it’s done and I take out the tape. What exactly is the struggle in that?
The whole experience with VHS tapes is the same as the CD experience
I’ve been collecting VHS’s since around the end of August 2023.
He's doing it wrong: It's better when it's VCR home recordings from the 80's and 90's (and early 00's), filled with commercials from those decades!
Most vhs tapes I had were from Disney, Nick Jr, and Richard Scarry’s best videos ever. It’s always fun to watch openings so I would be on a hunt for a good movie. Most films from the ‘90s are 10 times better than most of what we get today.
Just watched some VHS tapes on My VCR. Cant forget the beauty of the past
VHS tapes should be preserved
I still have my VHS tapes and a VCR :) (still works) :)
All this digital garbage feels FAKE
I respect only things that i can hold in my hands.
So do I. I need to replace myVCR though
I don't have a VCR, but I want one, I have my DVD and I love it! ✨
@@KamiloPerez06 Cool man :)

4K Blu-ray is where it's at for me. My internet is too slow for streaming if I care about video quality.
Well with a lot of older films they were only released on VHS due to rights they never saw any kind of disk or streaming. And the new issue is Disk Rot where a lot of DVD and some Bluerays aren’t playable at all. Like anything Colombia/tristar are just coasters at this point same with a lot of WB box sets where whole seasons are just unreadable to
One reason video cassettes are likely making a comeback is because there's a lot of content on them that can be bought very cheaply, despite not being as high quality as DVD and Blu-Ray Disc. And then there is content that was only made available on video cassette.
And, like any other physical media, you can watch it over and again with no worries that it will be made unavailable, like what can happen to content on streaming services.
The only worry with video tape is that it will wear out given enough plays.
As for those Disney cassettes selling for hundreds, not likely. Yes, there are listings of those copies at those prices, but most people don't buy them, especially as you can still find copies of those same movies selling for $1.
And, heheheheh... 2:41 I doubt you had much luck actually loading a VHS cassette into a 3/4" U-matic deck.
Back in the days of Blockbuster and other video stores,VHS movies were rented hundreds,if not thousands of times and then sold as "pre-Viewed" and I own many of them ....and all these years later they still play fine....don`t believe what the purists tell you.
@@Gljin40509 Uh, dude, I also have rather extensive experience with video cassettes, both Beta and VHS, transferring stuff to digital as well as cleaning and repairing machines.
The biggest concern with previously viewed rentals is less about how much wear and tear they get and more about the condition of the VCRs that were used to play them.
Unfortunately, most people with VCRs back then never bother to have them periodically serviced, only turning them in for repair when they break down, if not just replacing them with new machines.
There can be cassettes where the tape was chewed or eaten up, where the damaged portion of the tape can clog heads with oxide or, worst case, could damage the video heads. There are others where contaminants in the tape path gets picked up by the tape and then transferred over to the other VCR that plays it, requiring a tape path cleaning to address any problems that arise out of that.
And, generally, tape is fairly hardy. But it's still a format requiring physical contact with the tape. Therefore, there is still a wear factor. And usually, tape wear manifests as dropouts in the picture, which will also sound like crackling with AFM sound, whether Beta hi-fi or VHS Hi-Fi.
But, most tapes tend to deteriorate with age and exposure rather than use since most cassettes are not used that frequently.
Also, aging problems may also largely depend on who made the tape.
Tapes from the likes of Maxell, TDK, and Fuji age excellently, with very few problems.
Tapes from any European brand, like BASF, age horribly ... unless it's BASF tape that was imported from South Korea rather than Germany; not outstanding, but not sticky head-clogging trash, either.
Tapes from some brands like Scotch and Sony can be hit and miss. Most of Sony's tape is good, but some are bad, such as Sony's UHG line of cassettes from the mid-late 1980s or any Scotch tape made before 1982.
In fact, there were Scotch Betamax cassettes from the 1970s that was made from slit computer tape. You can tell by checking the tape's color; it will be brown on one side instead of black or dark grey, along with a fairly light grey backcoating. You can't use those today; the moment you try to play it, your heads will be instantly clogged.
Ive been collecting since 2016 with the explosion of vaporwave, slushwave, and synthwave on the internet.
People like myself are whiching free vhs movies in my house forever
2:03 Now Available On Videocassette Flashbang Bumper
Don't go in the house! Such an under rated movie
VHS on a CRT Tube TV is the ONLY way to truly watch and experience a horror movie.
here is a good one for you folks that you probably didn't know.. i just found out about this last night...
DID YOU KNOW that an HD VHS format does exist? it is called D-VHS and its play back is 1080i and it came out in 1997, sadly they got beat out by DVDs at the time, and when blu rays came out in 2006 the format was abandoned...
so 1080i VHS DO exist out there... as to D-VHS VCRs
do with that information as you will, because if they start bringing back VHS tapes. they could bring back DVHS which is a HD "analog/digital" tape
1:37 That's pretty clever the way you did the 0's like that!
The one thing about videotapes that virtually EVERYBODY got wrong was when to rewind. They should be rewound before watching, not after. They get a much more stable and even winding during playback so that is how you want them to be stored.
I still have VHS tapes, most of them are from my chilhood, as I grew up with the format as DVDS used to cost a bomb when I was growing up , so VHS was the cheaper option. I still watch my childhood tapes as it brings back nastalgia , except the tapes that i would watch until the tape wore out due to it streaching while playing in the VCR and had to be thrown. Compared to some kids nowadays that wont know ehat i'm talking about as DVDS never wore out, they only scratch and tgats the only way to damage a DVD.
I was born in 2000 and glad I got to see vhs before 2006. They were a part of my childhood, I feel sorry for kids who never seen them before. I used to own 10 disney tapes, but mostly warner bros. and Paramount. I miss the joys of popping in a tape and just what the previews before the movie starts.
Oh yes. The previews. Also once you buy a VHS tape you can watch as many times as you want and there is something about hearing go into the VCR,t anticipation of getting to see that movie. And you only had to pay for it once.
@@CeliaMitchell-ot5ir yep, also no internet access just some good old times of popping the tape without buffering or ads. ☺
The first tape we got was Goldie : Last of the Golden Bears. (The family made a big mistake of SENSING him to the video store. )
😆
@@CeliaMitchell-ot5ir Having the wrong label on the case or sticker on the vhs tape. I know how that felt. I was at a goodwill long time ago and thought I was getting the Rugrats in Paris movie, but I ended up getting Rugrats the movie. The Case had Rugrats in Paris but turns out to be their 1st movie. I was proud of it honestly. Sure still miss those days. :)
I think it's cool that damage blue ray disc movies doesn't play at all that vhs movies more greater on playing than blue ray disc movies
Nostalgia And Nostalgic Forever
Thumbs 👍🏻 up 👍🏻 if this is how you streamed movies 🎥 back in your day.
i can tell you that there are MANY and i mean MANY movies that cannot be streamed over the internet and thats why its good to have them on VHS or even DVD ...
I still have 2 vcr's in my house. 1 is a S-VHS from the late 90's and the other is a VHS/DVD combo made in 2009 with a digital tuner for todays air broadcasting.
I'm looking to expand into D VHS and just for the hell of it HD DVD, it's good for someone like me when it comes to making movies using nothing but the net and a computer with Windows live movie maker installed (and maybe Openshot Video Editor or AVS Video editor for quick upscales).
I mean streaming in a sense isn't really a good sort of business unless you have a good share of people who like all sorts of movies. For the most part, a lot of people have a very select set of tastes, so if a streaming service doesn't have the movies you like, you are out of luck. In addition to this, some people can go from being absolute movie fanatics to not wanting to watch movies at all. This is why Video Rental Stores should have stayed, because really, who wants to pay $16/month on something that may have only one movie you like and nothing else.
Bring back VHS 🙏
Still have my collection. I have about 80 VHS 📼 tapes. That I bought & won’t part with.
Tapes aside, I collect the RECORDERS and repair them myself.
Also, I like how he put a VHS cassette in a U matic VCR at 2:43.
If the vhs makes a comeback there better be a slower more quiet and more gentle 1 way vhs rewinder.
VHS and DVDs will always make comebacks, people are getting tired of streaming
Also something is very subtle about using outdated technology. Makes me feel like I am connecting with the past
Blu-Rays will make a comeback, too, since that's not a streaming app either. Yes, people are tired of streaming as it costs money 💵 every month as part of your cable bill. Back in my day, this was my way of streaming movies 🎥.
Never thought such thing would ever happen, but I still have a bunch of VHS movies left and kept themm around for so many years, never parted with those, including nearly all of Charlie Chaplin movies, and some others, including Gormenghast, it's crazy how long I had all of those still around, annd Gormenghast is now incredibly hard to find nowadays in North America,...
Glad to have found all those Chaplin movies since I'm pretty much a fan of his since over 24 years ago, I thought back then that all those movies were gone for good even though I kept them around all that time, I was still hoping such thing it would happen, it was only that kindda feeling, glad I did...
It's like an old friend you hadn't heard from for decades suddenly return knocking at your front door...
And I'm not a collector, just a very small number that I still have, some of them were birthday presents from my dad when I was a kid, and others were Christmas Presents from my Uncle, but glad I still had those old movies even though the tapes are still pretty old, still worthwhile even after all that time...
Iam a vhs collector and i also love to collect them it just feels different than just going online and play the movie
I remembered them being called videos as well.
After digital codec like HEVC came to power, S-VHS could save the situation only like an analog recorder of 6MHZ spectrum in 16QAM format. And, composite video signal is obsolete.
Nostalgia Champion 🏆🥇
DVDs and BLUE RAYS are cheap medium that ends up in the garbage very soon.
VHS tapes are like one of those anvils for smiting.

I still have my trusty 1994 Akai vcr flagship model hooked up, i use it every so often to watch some old stuff on and record shows on the tv, i find it quicker to put a tape in and hit record than faffing about on slow irritating digital menus settings silly timers or using red button plus i can archive that recording unlike these days where its encrypted and not to be moved to a backup device, with a tape its quick done and recorded, ok the qualitys not hd but it displays well on my 50" tv just fine with a hdmi upscaler and certainly watchable, to me it's very nostalgic as i grew up with this stuff, i do find it amazing that the stuff i recorded 30 to 40 years ago is still absolutely fine, they say tapes don't last and fade over time but i don't believe it if you store them right they will last years.
I just bought the entire Star Trek original series on VHS for $11 on an eBay auction. Shipping nearly tripled the cost. This edition was sold by Columbia House beginning in 1987(!) so the tapes are as much as 35+ years old. Image quality loss was surprisingly minimal. The boxes they came in were decrepit, with the inner plastic housing coming unglued from the thick cardboard outer sleeve. And the set was so heavy I had to wheel it around on a cart. Still fun to watch videos dating to back when I bought my first VCR in 1986. I have other VHS tapes...I see them often in thrift stores and at nearly every estate sale. I gave up the format years ago but returned to it... for titles that are either out of print or have never been released on DVD. Prices are typically low, (shipping is high online) though I see prices have increased lately as I hear nostalgia has increased demand. The tapes sure take up more room than a DVD!
Lucky bastard! Even at $30 the entire original series is a steal, especially with all tapes in relative good condition!
I still have a player, why? Well, Atmosfear, love that franchise.
Aaaaand also the video EP of Pink Floyd - The Final Cut.
If everyone would just cancel their streaming services we could get back to this lifestyle
Well the more modern type is DVD or even Blu-ray but I feel like they can't be mishandled even slightly coz they will scratch😮 so it's not the same
@@L_M_V optical media is starting to die out. Soon enough DVD And Blu-ray Will Be Like VHS
@@CatsRobloxOther2nd i mean I already don’t use it but a lot of people I know still do… some of them at least…
What did I learn from this video ?
Nothing.
People like myself want Walmart to start having vhs tapes and VCR players again not just ebay or Amazon
If VHS is going to make a comeback, then studios will have to re-release titles formatted for 16x9 TV's. Currently, VHS tapes are:
A) Pan and scan (too little info)
B) Open matte (too much info)
C) Letterboxed, but only for 4x3 TV's (is windowboxed on a 16x9 TV)
Cars looks gorgeous in full screen.
Electronic manufacturing companies will also have to start making VCRS with built-in HDMI connections.
Andy is my new favorite. I love Vhs too
The greatest sign of respect for something is making a PHYSICAL representation of it. (like VHS tapes)
The main reason why we dont have VHS tapes or physical media anymore is because the QUALITY of todays movies have gone completely down the toilet.
Having digital only media is a sign of hatred and disrespect for the content that the corporations are creating today.
There are no more classics.
Sometimes they make a good movie but 99.9.9 percent of the time its complete garbage.
AI (artificial intelligence) might change that.
We will see.
I still have my have vhs tapes till this day and I’m 23 yrs old btw.
Very admirable for someone your age :)
I had so many VHS tapes but to tell you the truth once I got laserdisc that was a lot better then VHS and so was DVD and then HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. I get people want to own a physical copy but there are better media formats then VHS.
And somebody told me
That's old technology.
Get rid of video tapes!
Boy, he was so very wrong. They're making a comeback!!!😊
What was the last VHS manufactured in 2016?
I believe it was 2006
okay I hope that garage is temperature controlled tho
Those cassettes are gonna be so moldy and gross
I want to get into VHS but I can not find any tapes locally and eBay prices seem a bit silly?
i cant find any VHS tapes or VCR's locally either but ebay seems to have everything and the prices are insane.
Every Goodwill or 2nd hand store only have dvd's and dvd players ...
People like myself are making our own Disney VHS tapes to be our own Disney plus now days everything proven

VHS TAPES
How long do the VHS keep last?
Not really know it was said maybe 20 years or 30 but I have a tape from rental copy from 1985 that works perfectly well still. One guy just found a reel to reel of the original CBS broadcast of the moon landing that was still readable.
Our protagonist also is a VHS collector
Make A Wish that Sony Electronics build VCR again so folks can buy new
i only buy vhs for titles that aren't on dvd/bluray. luckily, there aren't many titles that i want that aren't on dvd because the space needed is too much for vhs only.
Someone is gonna learn how to create new tapes
I’ve been recollecting VHS recently and I’ve been enjoying it. Largely the anime tapes from the ADV Films and Pioneer. I also have bootleg anime tapes in my collection acquired by a friend a few years back.
yessss vhs is coming back
honestly i would just use VHS for analog horror stuff, while my preferred videotape format is Mini DV. It's digital!
I love VHS cassettes to
You're so foolish for liking those crappy VHS cassettes.
VHS is the best
shooting deathglares at my husband right now, he talked me into donating most of my VHSs
Don't do it. Keep them. They're very sentimental.
Vhs tapes VCR players proven they not gone forever yet everything proven there everywhere online now days now if they return back in Walmart and other stores that be great not just being online
Lol....350 lines if misery in fantastic 4:3 with a 50hz hum in the soundtrack
Rest in peace
VHS
1973-2006
CD's sound better than records, however they don't format pre Plasma era movies for DVD. I don't want to see the top and bottom of a movie removed to fit my 60 inch. Videos used master prints and are printed at a ratio that is pleasing to the eye - it's cinematic. I don't want to watch a 1930's film from the 1960's that is now in the public domain. I'm not allergic to black bars on my TV - just when I go on the prowl.
I hope he doesnt live in a humid environment because thats the worst thing for tapes
Y would people get rid of there vhs tapes
Start making more VCR players
VHS tapes & DVDs will always be lightyears superior unlike the garbage we have these days such as Netflix, Di$ney+, all other platforms of Digital media. I already got VHS copies of Project A-Ko, Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie, & The Pagemaster! Now there's several more VHS tapes & DVDs that I WILL collect in the future & a lot of them are mainly Anime, Horror, Sci-Fi, & Action! I say this so passionately because I hate streaming movies & I'm also so sick & tired of trying to download movies online that failed miserably.
Everything is proven vhs tapes out doing everything people's thinking and internet now days
Am Sorry that people doesn't like me buying VCR players cleaning tapes vhs movies VCR belts offline now days specially they never want me to have what I want to have yet everything proven it's not up to them till people I think you should get what you should have
VHS Proven it can do 5 things 1 damage vhs continues playing 2 vhs that is not damage they still continue playing 3 mold on VHS still continues playing 4 heat Damage on VHS proven it continues playing 5 vhs gets fixed with scotch tape it still continues playing though with out no problems now blue Ray's only can do 2 things 1 damage blue Ray's locks up or doesn't play now blue Ray's when not damage they going continue playing
i only collect looney tunes scooby doo and tom and jerry and thats it
Damage blue Ray's proven they are not good enough specially damage vhs proven its good enough they still continue playing though with out problems specially the age vhs tapes proven it doesn't matter it's the playing what matters
I think it’s why DVDs came so fast. Since they were less durable and broke easier you’d have to spend more money to replace them.
Don't matter because vhs's garbage and Blu-ray and Ultra 4K
