Most excellent suggestions. I outfitted my 2012 Dodge Caravan with these objectives: keep it lightweight, don't alter the van at all (e.g. no screw holes), do everything myself (very low skill level), spend as little as possible. My bed is half a full-size metal frame (27 in wide), storage under bed = cardboard boxes, no running water, no shower, Bluetti ac50s + folding solar panels to run $150 fridge, Fiskies cat treats jar to pee in, and so on. I figured I could add things as needed. Haven't added a thing. No need.
When you think about it, there are people all over the world who live in homes that look nothing like homes in North America and Western Europe. People live in yurts and mud huts. They have different storage solutions that work for them. You are right! We need to stop trying to make our vans look like the houses we are moving out of.

In my 1st van (cargo van) I installed a sink. I don't think I ever used it even one time. Total waste of time, money and space.

I like the idea of a usb rechargeable pump on a 3 gallon cooler of multifiltered ice water that with a push of a button I can hydrate. Thinking of transforming the cooler into a blower a/c and make it dual purpose. It's gonna be fun just to test it out!

You’re absolutely right. After taking my van on a few camping trips I removed about two thirds of the things I bought. I just didn’t use them. There are probably more things I could remove and may in time. Your video was great. I always enjoy watching them. 😁 Happy travels

I 100% agree with Leslie...and my campervan is now built the opposite of her's. Last year I did a super simple design and stayed at campsites for 2 weeks. I realized it wasn't my style...I wanted to stealth camp instead and run my full-time digital design business from the space too. So...I had to put in months of work and a lot of money into it upfront...but I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! I have everything I need and it is a cute little office too. Time management is huge for me...so I HAD to get an outdoor shower. But now my only travel expenses are gas and propane. We each have our own tastes, preferences and needs. So I think every campervan should be as unique as the traveller.

You are so right I laugh at a lot of builds because they will put flooring and then a queen size bed taking up all the space, makes no sense at all. The running water is so true most don't really even use it!
Great advice. I'm about to get my mini Van and live in it full time. I don't need much because I am a travel mental health worker. I work within hospitals and can just shower at work anytime and fill up my water jugs there. I already store a week worth of meals for work in my jobs fridge and freezer anyway so all I need is a small cooler in my van. I never cook these days so I don't need a stove and can use the microwave at work if I choose or not. Simple life. Kids are grown and now it's just me. Life is exciting!!!
LOL! Leslie, I've been stressing myself out for at least a year watching videos and trying to decide everything I needed to get started then I told myself, "Keep it simple, stupid!" Sooo, I did and I am starting out slowly and learning as I go. And your bonus tip is the first thing I realized I did that I shouldn't have done. I glued the fabric to the reflectix (RME)! Luckily I have a sewing machine so I am going to stitch around them now.
Sara! You'll be glad you stiched 'em. Heck, I'm glad you're stiching 'em, too! 🤣 I used a spray adhesive to keep my fabric on my reflectix, too, but then stiched them as well. You are sooo wise for keeping it simple. I really think the most difficult part of the build is the year or so leading up to getting started, when you're just innundated with options. You got this. What other projects are you working on?
yes now I have reason to buy that bomb ass manual cobbler sewing machine off of Amazon going for $120 and find a spot for it in my off grid van life...hmm..will I need to sew out there? OMG lol Balancing that with a margarita blender (joke)

My first time here and I’m excited that I subscribed! This segment was extremely helpful as I embark upon building a cargo van on a budget. You have no idea how many of your clever ideas I’m incorporating into my own build-despite it being an SUV. The corner hutch/cabinet, the side table using the armrest as a base, the folding bed (much modified), and little touches throughout.
Since I will be soon living in my SUV with my cat while I build my tiny house, my needs are a bit different, so some of your “mistakes” are things I do need.
Love your content, your straightforward style and common sense solutions are a breath of fresh air.🌿✨

I do like my floor because it allows me to store all the little things under it by the sliding doors. Things like shoes, books, tools, screened house stuff, curtains, tarp etc....everything else is refer to #1...your van build is never done :) Sometimes you have to just try something then realize...not needed. I have found that IF you are living full time and don't have a sticks and bricks your needs are a little different. I have gone to 6 months in home and 6 months in van approx...so I think your suggestions of go simple, figure out what you need then do it is spot on....
I completely agree! So many people overcomplicate their camper. And everything should have a dual purpose.

This is wonderful, Leslie. I have wondered whether my idea of not having any power in the van (well when not driving)... I have thought I would use a small inverter and the car power to charge iphone, ipad, a little lantern; using ice in a cooler, etc. Perhaps I was right (I mean for me)? Also a lot of people want to stealth--to me sleeping in a Walmart, well I understand but only if you can't afford staying elsewhere, but being "stealth" isn't worth it for me.

Leslie, I dig you the most! Ya know, my husband and I are retired. Well, sort of. We both are disabled. I was in an accident at work back in 2006 and as a result, my back is shot and I lost my right foot. I actually have about five inches of it, no arch forward. So no toes. You would think my settlement would have been millions or one, but not the case. We were able to buy a small motel which we just sold at the end if 2019. So now we want to get an RV or camper to travel in. Maybe live in full time. We are figuring it all out still. These are fantastic things to know because even we don’t know exactly what we want yet. Thanks so much for reminding (me) us of things we might not think of until it’s money spent and time consumed.

Thank you for another great video. We totally agree start with less and figure it out and build as you learn your style. Our first minivan camper has mats and padding on the floor for sleeping, 3 action packer tubbes for storage and the Chuck box Camp Kitchen. We just took the middle row of seats out and stored them in the living room of our house loaded the action packers, camp Kitchen, a cooler, some food, our personal items and clothing. We could be backing out of the garage and on a trip in less than 1/2 hour, including removing the middle row. With our current build it takes about 1 and 1/2 hours. Hi Anita! Wow, your first camper was a true "escape pod." But still, an hour and a half is pretty good. It usually text me that long just to figure out which clothes I'm going to bring. Lol!
@@TheVanThatGotAway The second time putting it back in was only an hour. My husband is the one that takes an hour just to pack his clothes and we still usaully end up stopping to purchase something he forgot. Years of backpacking and traveling on trains and buses, I can pack for months in a 28 leter bag. I may not be that stylist, but I'll be comfortable. 5 to 20 min. to pack clothes.

@@TheVanThatGotAway I'm still trying to figure that out. Changed from traveling all over to only needing a camper van to see Colorado for starters. Reading up on each one's recalls and history's is where I'm at. I prefer stand up because my back but minivan may have to work lol.
I hear ya. The decision making step can be one of the toughest parts. If it helps, we do all of our standing up outside the minivan, LOL!!
Toyota sienna is great. A 4x8 sheet of plywood fits flat between the wheel wells. Also large area where rear cargo seats come out.
I have a minivan, a 2004 Ford Freestar and I guess it's about as big as any minivan, more or less, but it's really hard to see how somebody could get it all that much built into it. I certainly agree with the ability to get out of Dodge. If I was going to camp in my minivan I would need to find a way to take out the console between the two front seats to give me easier access to the drivers seat from the back. I don't think she gave her views on a sleeping platform and most people seem to think that is step one. I have found a guy on here that says that is not a good idea and being a guy myself I agree with him. Extra weight, extra junk, don't need it is my view, I'd rather have some headroom.

great video! I am currently on my second full time summer 4-6 month (minivan) life. I mainly live on Vancouver island. I will be heading south for the winter (hoping borders open!) You make great points, simple is better. To add to your list. i went with full dark tint in the back & sides. i mean DARK they call it limo tint. this eliminated the need for any kind of curtains, except the one behind the front seat when sleeping. Also mine is a dodge grand caravan, had stow & go captain chairs. When you remove them, it leaves you a huge storage space i call the pit! lol I also use smaller Rubbermaid storage bins that are stackable, no shelf or cabinets and they double as a table with a cutting board on top. that goes into the bins when not in uses. Also i don't understand the need for a permanent bed, i have a single air mattress and a small electric blower. works great and i can also fit a twin for when i have someone staying with me. You can deflate it anytime, leaves so much room in the back. And you where bang on about the clothes! i started with too many, now i have enough for about 2 weeks than its laundry day. also completely correct on the sink/water thing, I have a small blue jug with a tap. I can put it on a bin or on the door and instant water tap. Which you can fill up at any campsite for free. Day use camp site in BC are free to use and most have water and pit toilets and there are everywhere. One more item i feel is completely needed is a Jackery power source. It will power and charge laptop,phones,heaters, fans and more. It charges when driving and last long time. keep up with the great video, I'm a follower now. have a wonderful summer.

I just subscribed! So informative. I know I don’t want to have a black tank or grey tank or sink in a van. I love doing dishes outside when I camp. I rather do the bathroom bucket/bag method. I agree the van will change as you go. A no build is what I am thinking about doing.

@@TheVanThatGotAway I have a Ford Transit, a Hightop it's a diesel, extra long. Originally I only had them remove some of the seats, but it is currently back at shop to remove last seat. I wanted the extra space. So I am still in no build...build...lol

I have changed my layout in my mini van multiple times... it's never finished but that is fine. Its great for now, but I'm always trying to make it better with ideas from other campers. I agree with you to always leave the path to the drivers seat clear and make sure you know where your keys are. I do like my solar when I'm out on BLM land for a few weeks but I don't have a power source but a small Motorcycle battery but it keeps my phone charged. This may have to change because I've been given a refrigerator so no more ice but it will take more power. I need to get a cord for it and test it out. I'm really excided about it. (hopefully it works)

Your tips make so much sense. Definitely looking forward to your "everyday in the van" videos! Does your van have a sunroof that can be opened for ventilation? I f I get a minivan to camp in, I think I would and then install some screen to keep bugs out.
Hi MJ! We're not that fancy, we don't have a sunroof. I've actually seen people fit a piece of plywood into their sunroof opening, cut holes, braced in some small fans, hooked them up to electric power and could ventilate that way! Now that's a project. You're not thinking of doing something like that, are you?😉😀

From the posts you’ve already done it seems to be a sure thing that you will eventually give us all possible info on the particulars on your van build. So I hesitate to ask, but where do you store clothing, towels and pans, etc. It sounds like you may eat out a lot and don’t need much kitchen equipment. I’ve been watching and researching for a year and a half to get ready to convert our 2013 Sienna and I will say that if I’d found you first I would not have gone any further. Bravo, Leslie!

Thanks for the nice words but isn't part of the van build process watching every single video on RUclips? 🤣🤣🤣 Anyway, we store all our kitchen stuff, our camp chairs, our clothes and anything else big and bulky in the rear well where the 3rd row seats used to fold into, before I removed them. We both use very small bags for our clothes, hence the need to only take a select few. Not easy. LOL!!
We actually do cook quite a bit, and by "we" I mean that the hubby does all the cooking. I can't taking any credit for that. 😂

I bought some heavy industrial velcro, Gorilla double sided tape heavy duty for small jobs, hope it holds. Lots of command hooks.

@@TheVanThatGotAway remember when you said your rain guard was flopping in the wind. I'm replacing all the tape mine came with, with the Gorilla double sided tape. Super strong. Adding washers to bottom of shower curtain with tape so it doesn't blow in the wind on the hula hoop rod. Just for starters!!
Smart! Oh, I wish I'd saved my rain guard instead of throwing it in the trash in a huff, LOL! Let me know how the projects turn out.🙂
@@TheVanThatGotAway I wish I was tech savvy so I could these projects. I will take pictures on my phone and try to upload them somehow cause yours are so good and detailed. Also I've been using Gorilla clear repair tape since it came out, wonderful stuff, waterproof
Thanks for info. Hope to be on road within 2yrs plan very simple. No electric just battery lights/fans, some say get jackery & charge while driving, I'll see. Bucket for potty at night. Bed half size since travel alone, screens in place from inside. Water accessible from in and out. Prefer stainless steel container, not easy find. Also, adhesive. Thinking about sewing, ugh, but if works long term will do. Thank again
You're doing it right. I plan on boondocking several times so I want to have all the basic needs met. It only me, my decision.
For stainless water, try restaurant supplies for ice tea dispensers.
Hey Topi! I also feel ...Ugh... about sewing. But once you do it, it's done. You are definitely preaching to the choir about starting simple. I was sooo convinced we needed a jackery before we started out, but we charge phones, fan, tablet and light while we're driving and it works fine. If you're hanging out somewhere without electric for a number of days or if you're running more than just a few chargeable things, I could see getting the jackery or some type of portable charger. Keep us updated on your progress, okay?

OMG...I did the same...well, I think mine is 28" wide. But, I made the edge of the frame on the middle/inner side of the cabin with about 3/4 of an inch of space on top so if I wanted to design and add a second bed it would be easy to add side boards & legs on the empty outer side and lay the top of the second bed on the frame of the first bed, and they would share that middle frame for support.

Not everyone can afford to do the campgrounds. Unless I am going to set up and stay awhile, I just stay at truckstops at night and go to a park or something in the day so I don't wear out my welcome 🙂

Hey Shan! We don't use AC, nope. Since we rarely hang out in the van during the day (unless we're driving) we just need to stay cool at night. We crack open the windows and get our USB-chargeable fan going. It moves enough air to keep us very comfortable. At first I didn't believe it would but I'm here to tell the story. Congrats on your trip! Where are ya going?

Great video, Leslie! I am at that analytical stage (emphasis on anal lol). Way over thinking. I have just been camping with my floor covered with quilt layers as a bed sleeping bag and bins. I made a construct of one bin having 1 by 3 on each side then a "u" cut and a broomstick piece to hold my hanged shirts. I can't stand digging for what shirt I want to wear and like not having fold creases. I invested in Limo tint but still need to do the cover with the Reflectix. In the time I have done this primal mode, I have brainstormed what can be done in so many ways. Your video was so there for me! Overthinking mostly because I want to show off how a girl can make a bomb ass mobile abode! So dissing that idea. Functionality over show off. I AM making the bed design. I already sized up and have a little folding template of my bed platform. Sizing it for my single life. Eric Does Earth commented that I might want a double...but not in my plans I like your tweek to his design. Your video so helped me draw it out, as well! lol...perhaps a pet lizard. I need room for a Bluetti (pausing on if I want 2000 or 800W). Researching more affordable folding waterproof panels that are truly compatible with Bluetti. The 800W with a 200W off brand solar folding solar panel seems to be the one...
Personally, I dig the idea of stealth camping. I feel rogue like beating the system off grid! Leslie, you are the bomb diggidiest builder.

Thanks for the tip. I'm retiring end of the year. I'm gonna buy a 2021 Ford transit connection conversion which comes with a TV dvr a sink a Microwave 100 solar watts and a fan roof top. I'm gonna be living in it. I'm not building it I'm buying it from the dying company

My build is the polar opposite. It’s my third van and I know my habits when travelling. I like going to remote places in the wilderness for an extended period of time. And I never use campsites. Also I like to travel in extreme climates. Lofoten and the Sahara dessert… I need some climate control, an insulated floor and a fan. I need water and I need solar. I need a shower and I need a freezer to be away from civilisation for a longer time. Also I need satellite internet and a laptop to work.
Also I think, you overestimate the dangers. I never encountered a situation in which I felt threatened by anyone. There was always time to get out of the car, talk to people and drive away. A closed off bulkhead is not necessary for security.
So… I 100% disagree with you. These things are not mistakes. It’s deliberate.
At what point do you get to the subject matter?
I hope my next wife has as much common sense as you do.
