    I really liked this video. You seem like a really cool couple. Enjoyed your conversation a lot. (I found this video because I recently started seeing a doctor. He's in his 3rd year of residency. It's difficult to not take it personally when he doesn't have time to talk or meet.. Trying to be patient though, he's a really great guy, wish me good luck 🤞🏻 😄)

    I’ve been with a guy for a year and I spent most of that year pushing him away cause I felt he was just shallow and only came to me to get something, but now I discovered that it was because of exhaustion and the busy schedule, so I’ve been trying to be more patient and am giving him a chance. It appears that being patient and understanding is the most important thing when dating a doctor.

    Sarah, I'm an Australian who's trying to get admitted to a medical degree in Australia via the GAMSAT route, which is the route you took to get admitted to your medical degree at Nottingham. I've got some questions about the GAMSAT and how to get your S2 score into the 50s or 60s or better. To give you an idea of what GAMSAT score Australians need to get admitted to an Australian medical degree program, the University of Western Australia had a GAMSAT cut off of 64 for 2019 entry if you have a GPA of 7 (I have a GPA of 7 according to UWA's admission requirements). I did the GAMSAT (1st attempt March 2019) and got an overall score of 55 (32nd %tile) (score breakdown: S1: 54 (26th %tile), S2: 41 (2nd %tile), S3: 62 (72nd %tile)). I realised that S2 (the God forsaken essay section) would be the hardest section for me so I only studied for that, but I got writers block in the GAMSAT, wrote next to nothing as a result, and only got an S2 score of 41 (2nd %tile) as a result. I'm really wondering how I can improve my S2 score, I honestly have no idea on this. It appears that you need to have an astronomical amount of knowledge to be able to write something that fits in with the S2 stimulus quotes in the S2 paper. It's as if you have to be like the real life "Rain Man" Kim Peek to have a hope of doing well in S2 of the GAMSAT (see ruclips.net/video/DLpCfHH1OVU/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/xvDuqW9SFT8/видео.html). If I can get my S2 score into the 60 to 65 (60th %tile to 84th %tile) range or better then it would be worth putting in the time studying for S1 and S3. How do you achieve an S2 score of 60 to 65 (60th %tile to 84th %tile) or better without being like Kim Peek?

    Hey Dr Nicholls! My name's Nihar and I'm 20 years old. I am/was a second year medical student (2018-2019). Basically I failed my summative OSCEs and had to resit them. But it turns out I narrowly failed the resits as well (passed 8/12 stations when I had to pass at least 9) 😥. I felt the stations were unfair (I was forced to do the ECG exam from the right side of the patient and it was difficult stretching the V5 and V6 leads to under the left armpit at the anterior and mid axillary lines) and I was failed for the comms skills stations by the same examiner who always fails me (even though I've passed the same station before with a different examiner). This time he said that I didn't follow the SPIKES and chunking and checking structure, despite clearly following it 😕
    Basically after this happened, I had a private assessment done and it turns out I'm on the autistic spectrum. I've always been a bit weird and had social anxiety! I think I gave off some unpleasant non verbal signals that lead to the examiner failing me. Despite doing well in my ISCM exams and even getting a merit in my SSC, I am now being asked to repeat the year because of failing the OSCE resits 😭
    It has always been my dream to become a GP but that now seems like an insurmountable task, with me constantly failing my OSCEs. Do you have any advice for me? Your videos are the only thing that's made me cheer up after being depressed for 10 days btw 🙂

    • @SarahNicholls
      @SarahNicholls  5 лет назад +2

      Dew Bob hello, I’m so sorry this has all happened to you. It sounds like you are going through a really tough time but you are persevering. So many people fail parts of medical school and loads have to resit a year, you are not alone. Medical school is tough for a reason and it sounds like you are made of strong stuff and have big dreams for the future. It also sounds like you are a very reflective person, which will make you a wonderful doctor and a wise GP. You may have to learn new ways of dealing with OSCEs and have to develop techniques for your non-verbal cues but that’s ok and it doesn’t mean all is lost. This is a small hurdle in the grand scheme of your life and career, keep going 🙌

    • @sean9177
      @sean9177 5 лет назад

      I'm in America but am going to school. I am on the autistic spectrum. Our schools, both colleges and universities have a disability advocate office. not sure if they have that in England or if the title would be different but I urge you to find out and if your school has something reach out, they could maybe help with how you learn or get tested, they do that over here. Good luck.

    That part about Vince giving out "medical facts" reminds me of me, my mum and my dad visiting my dad's village in southern China.
    So in southern China, people who are less educated, especially the ones who don't work in healthcare system are known to eat raw fish. It is a bit like a Chinese version of sashimi, quite a lot of them end up with liver fluke, one of the symptom is of course jaundice
    Because a lady looked really tanned, and her sclera looked a bit yellow, I asked my mum if she has jaundice. My mum of course said "no".
    I am pretty sure I learned the concept jaundice with the medics from UEA, because in one of our indoor training sessions, they asked me to play a revision video about liver diseases.
    I could have learnt the concept from my mum and dad. They both went to medical school in China, but they are not practicing. My dad does hepatitis B research, and did a master in parasitology. My mum used to be an epidemiologist, before she managed to transfer herself to my dad's division.
    The reason I say I learnt it from the UEA medics is because I don't actually know how to say the word "jaundice" in Chinese. I asked my mum if she thought that lady had abnormal liver function, because that lady looked so yellow.
    Edit: I forgot to say that you two are so so cute and lovely! Haha!

      Of Sarah close female doctor friends 4 out of 6 of them are in relationships with engineers, the other 2 are with other doctors. But I’d say that generally your assumption is accurate, the couples that are both doctors often struggle to see each due to the rota and hosptial location moves, certainly in the first couple of years. I think that’s why they looked for partners outside of medicine (so they can see each other a little more!)

      Hi fatemeh b, It makes sense that other doctors would be in relationships with others in the medical professions. I think it’s nice that we have different specialities so when we come home it’s not like we are still at work when we tell each other about our days (otherwise our conversation would probably turn into a case analysis if we were both doctors...) when Sarah tells me about cases I try and work out the diagnosis from the symptoms in engineering terms which is fun for me. I think I will be appearing occasionally in future videos, if I behave myself 😂
