  • Recently I’d heard a lot of people throw around the term “Modern Poetry” in regard to books of poetry being published and consumed today and I became increasingly interested in where the current styles of poetry came from. The history and movement of poetry through the centuries isn’t something a lot of us have an intimate knowledge about, so I thought I’d do a little Wikipedia research combined with my own memory of when I studied this years ago in college, and shed some light on the subject of where exactly the current American trends in poetry came from.
    Delving into this subject I thought would be pretty straight forward, but there’s a lot of information and I'm sure I missed or left out some things, but for this video I did my best to give a reasonably detailed overview of the History of Poetry in America.
    There were hardly any other videos on RUclips that cover the history of poetry in any regard, which is partly why I made this, but if you're interested in a more in-depth video about the Harlem Renaissance, I recommend Crash Course's video: • Langston Hughes and th...

    What about the beginning of American poetry? When it exactly started?

    Charles Bukowski was the greatest poet and short story writer of all time. And anyone who leaves him out of the great modern poets or shirt story writers are either jealous or ignorant.
    For instance:
    “Peace”
    I thought the dove
    was the bird of
    peace
    but here they were shooting them out
    of the brush
    and climbing up the sides of mountains
    and banging them down;
    and everywhere the doves went
    there were the
    hunters
    blasting and beaming and blasting,
    and one man who didn’t
    in the slightest
    resemble a dove
    was shot in the shoulder;
    and there were many complaints
    that the doves
    were smaller and scarcer
    than last year,
    but the way they fell
    through the air
    when you stung the
    life
    out of them
    was the same;
    and I was there too
    but I couldn’t shoot anything
    with a paintbrush;
    and a couple of them
    came over to my canvas
    and stood and stood and stood
    until I finally said,
    for God’s sake
    go look at Picasso and Rembrandt,
    go look at Klee and Gauguin,
    listen to a symphony by Mahler,
    and if you get anything
    out of that
    come back
    and stare at my canvas!
    what the hell’s wrong with
    him? the one guy
    said.
    he’s nuts. they’re all nuts,
    the other guy said. anyhow,
    I got my 10 doves.
    me too, his buddy said, let’s
    go home: we can have them
    in the frying pan
    by 2:30.
    -Charles Bukowski

    What is the difference between Emily Dickinson treatment of nature and the American poetry upon nature ? Are they the same?

    • @KayeSpivey
      @KayeSpivey  3 года назад +1

      Are they not one in the same? She was deeply influenced by her predecessors. What do you think? Outside of her structure and irony, what do you think is different about her treatment of nature from other American poets during that time?

      ,@@KayeSpivey I think that there is a little difference between her and the American poets, concerning the treatment of nature.

      As a published poet, educator, and workshop facilitator, I will answer your question about Emily Dickinson... She was a trailblazer - very innovative. Her use of half- rhyme, condensed stanzas, and approach to craft makes her poetry very recognizable- unique. Her nature poems are based on close observation while in her garden, and on memory and imagination... even when she was reclusive. She often interjects her philosophy ( worldview and spiritual beliefs) in poems, when she is seemingly talking about something else. Some may see her writings as " simple" yet it is really quite intricate- multi-layered and, sometimes cryptic.
