After wavering for months, Kelly takes a huge step into housing while the mayor defends forced evacuations of homeless addicts in Kensington.
God bless the man who helps these people and actually cares

we all do!
Babygirl DelRey thank you so much!!!
So much hopelessness but this guy keeps going back trying to help people find some hope. Hats off to you. You have a beautiful heart and soul.
The older black gentleman is very well spoken knowledgeable full of wisdom I hope he gets the oppurtunity he deserves
hell yes he was.Guy was a really cool dude who knew what was up for sure
And he cared.
Yes he is I agree. We need more people like him around and in different positions
Yes indeed!! He knows what has to be done by those in power yet he’s aware of the pain and suffering of those addicts and willing to work for the community as well….❤️🙏Bless this man ….
I was just like these people almost 12 years ago. Strung out on IV heroin and cocaine, homeless, stealing daily to get my fix. Prison didn't help, loosing my family and everything I own didn't make me want to change. Rehabs and 12 step programs are a total joke. The only thing that made me change was getting control of mind. Once I realized that drugs weren't my problem, I was able to get control of my problem, which was my screwed up way of thinking. To anyone struggling mindfulness, meditation and reading about mindfulness might be a great place to start your recovery. Once you can control your thoughts, you can control you actions and change your life.
Awesome to hear! I'm happy for you. I'm 2 years clean and I understand where you're coming from. The moment I realized that the drugs/withdrawal in the grand scheme of things was just a small hurdle that I had 100% control over, that was the day I quit cold turkey. 2 months of xanax withdrawals SUCKED, but it was 100% worth it!
Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at begin to change.
I feel you there man. Thanks I needed to read this
@@Shags22 same here.
Gumball's Gameroom May I ask what the moment or stimulus was that made you realize that drugs weren't you problem..?
I give this guy a lot of credit. Homelessness and heroin addiction is probably the most difficult hole to climb out of. I had an addiction that spanned 33 years starting on the streets of Greenpoint Brooklyn long long time ago and the amount of destruction to myself inside made it so very hard many years later to climb out of that dark hole. Today i wish I could say all fixed but that is far from the truth. There is no doubt i will live the rest of my life somewhat affected in my mind and in my health by all those years. However, i do not use anything anymore and do have good people around in my life. I also am fully aware of the split second it takes to wind up right back in the situation again no matter how much I fear that and no matter how much I say that cannot ever happen again. It certainly can so for me I try to minimize any stresses in my life and stay aware that that thought to do something just once is most definitely a fleeting moment that will catapult me into an abyss that who knows if Id ever come out of again. One of the more difficult things to deal with in the beginning is all the chaos we created, no job, no way to live, on probation, in a halfway house where other chaos is, parole, owing money everywhere with threats of jail, Drug Court, Family disownership, child support, depression, mental health issues. And some of these entities don't care what your issues are they want you right now to be paying up to do this and that and inside your just feeling beat to death from all the drugs and incidences and have no level of energy to deal with it. This is when it dangerous because you can feel like whats the point when everyone seems like they want to drown you. I would love to spell out whats wrong with the system and how I feel it perpetuates the problems especially with opiates but that would be another topic. I wish all of those guys the courage to stick it out, hang in and focus on even the minutest changes that happen over time to keep the faith that at some point you will feel better and the wreckage slowly get cleaned up to a point of feeling like living is worthwhile.
Jersey Pickins thank you so much!!!
The date posted on the orange sign for those people to move is my EXACT sobriety date. October 15, 2018. I was a homeless and addicted to heroin, alcohol and cocaine and I'm 131 days clean today. So grateful for my sobriety.
Well done kiddo!...Best wishes from Australia :)

It’s good to see that this guy cares. Jail isn’t the answer for the homeless addicts. The addicts need help with detoxing. Love is helpful. I feel terrible for these homeless individuals.
Kelly, good luck to you and congratulations on the promise of a better life.
Kelly you go girl, I have so much faith that you can do it!!!!!! You got an address now, you can get a free government cell phone and food stamps. Don't give up keep up the good work and be blessed. You are in my prayers.
Mr Britt Carpenter , you sir are an inspiration, an angel walking amongst us . I hope you're still helping the downtrodden and weary. Your compassion is amazing . Take care sir , don't forget to look after yourself as well. I have seen a lot of the ppl in this video first hand BC I was homeless in Kensington too I still live there but in a recovery house now and past 4 months as of tomorrow I will have 4 months... This video touched my ♥ in so many different ways and I hate watching videos with drugs in it but if I don't remember the pain and desperation that will be the start of my downfall and I never will say I'll never use again but for today im not 14 long years and I finally can rest enjoy my husband parents stepson sister and nephew and for once In my life I go to bed not having to worry about how to get next one and I pray every single night that every addict that's still breathing gets the same chance if they haven't yet I love everyone please keep educating ppl on this issue and stress to them there's hope to never give up and I will always be ready and willing to help anyone ☀🌈

No window for a candle.
For the lost in life, will never find, that flickering light through a window shine, no guiding light to help them home, lost in this world and all alone. It's so sad to see the young today, without a home or a place to stay. As if float upon an Endless Sea, no hope for land as they can see, no place to rest a weary head, an no one to miss them when they're dead. No window for a candle bright, and no light to guide them home at night, for no one to tuck them in their bed. as no greeting for the morning light, or not even someone to say goodnight. So what has happened to compassion in this world of today? Shalom!
Beautiful poem... but so sad 😞🙏🏻
Britt , you are a hero!
Wow. Very nice of you to say. Thank you so much.
When we get the choice to change it's scary and stressful. We are moving out of everything we know, and moving out of the drug spot we know. We don't know and are confused about the future thinking we would not make it, and we will be rejected. Insecurity is a factor in addicts.
You show that you are a sensitive and very human man in offering comfort and little help to these poor people. We should all together, help them get out of this where they live.
🙏 love you Kelly I'll be praying for you wish you well on your new apartment love you keep your head up God bless
I recently watched an episode of Secret Millionaire (UK), and he took his son with him to live "poor" for the 10 days. The son worked (undercover) at a Hostel for Homeless people and not only did he learn humility and compassion, he became passionate about what the Hostel did for the Homeless. Through donations, the Hostel had a fund used to furnish the apartments the Homeless transitioned into. Before the millionaire and his son left, they donated £30,000 to that fund (and continued supporting the charity). I guarantee you, if a dozen millionaires had to sleep on the streets and/or in shelters, at least 9 of them would put good money into affordable housing, etc and use their influence to overhaul antiquated processes currently used by local governments. There should be wrap-around services at all phases of moving the homeless off the streets, especially counseling! Otherwise, the cycle will start all over. If all of us continue to pretend Homeless folks are invisible, and that we are better than they are, the problem will grow. I'm a fairly new Homeless Advocate... I am a Disabled Veteran with a chronic illness (in addition to Pain) and I started by sharing with friends/family, retweeting tweets from Mark Horvath (founder of Invisible People), etc. At the very least you can find 30 seconds or a minute to do that every day, right? Maybe a few wealthy people will do some great things for the Homeless in 2019. 🙏🏼

Im addicted to nicotine and its a battle every time I attempt a quit. I cant imagine what Heroin withdrawal could be like
use Chantax patches...
When I gave up smoking I went from tailor made cigraettes to rolling my own - I noticed I started getting withdrawals from not having a smoke, but I was smoking..! So I figured that it was theose pre-rolled tailor made cigarettes that are filled with all sorts of addictive crap.. once I'd been smoking the rollo your own tobacco I found one day I could just stop, which I did for my wife who doesnt smoke (I thought to mysel, man, I bet kissing me is like kissing an ashtray - she must really love me..) so I just stopped (though I did take up sucking on hard candy and put on a bit of weight) .....now I need to give up sugar....!
Andrew Jory I quit overnight by switching to a vape... an Aspire Breeze to be sure! I had no problem quitting, 7 yrs later my dr says my lungs sound like a “never been a smoker”

You got this Kelly ❤️❤️❤️
"We" can fix this, we lack both the moral courage and basic human kindness to do so. Ain't America grand.
@Anna Cottle Cottle they like heroin case they are incredibly broken, Almost always coming from childhood trauma and abuse. Easy to love and have compassion on a child isn't it,
not so easy to do the same with an adult, unless your able to look at the person not the behaviour ❤️
Sorry but America does not look after its people very well, but always has money to go to war
Sad. There are seniors still waiting for housing after 12 years or more; spending over half of their monthly social security income on housing; after having worked all their lives. I wonder how they feel about addicts being a priority.

The opioid companys should pay more taxes.
There the money for the wall right there lol
That would cause them to raise the prices of the drug and for people like my mother who suffers from severe chronic pain due to a genetic disease, that's a nightmare. We truly are in a crisis but punishing those who actually need certain drugs to maintain a HEALTHY lifestyle isn't the answer. Punishment for over prescribed drugs by the Dr's, over production of the drugs by the companies, and refusal of refills unless a new prescription is written each time, by pharmacies is a somewhat of a start. Nothing can be done with a blanket fix though.
Proud of you Kelly!!!!
when its gentrified tho they will clean it up in a hurry!! I walk past this everyday omw to work. A lot of people in these encampments aren't even homeless.they're set up here to use and buy/sell dope...it deff encourages illegal activity...people shooting each other up, needles everywhere I feel so bad for the people who live in this neighborhood
We did create this crisis because of our government!!. This needs to be on the news more.
Poor girl.. God bless her and keep her safe.
I wish there was a program that dealt with "fostering" a homeless person looking for a better tomorrow! I'd sign up in a heartbeat and show a homeless person, with the will to get to a better place, that some of us care about their future! Not all of them want to be on the streets nor deserve to be.
I met one lady that became homeless after her husband died. He was the sole provider of the house. 🙁

A society that chases pleasure to numb out the emotional pain and emptiness in life... produces this at the worst end of the spectrum. But, really, all of us are doing it to some degree.
Consumer culture promises the gifts that only true spiritual life can bestow.
I give you the award for the best comment made throughout all 5 episodes.
Taking drugs is a choice. No one forces anyone to take drugs. People make the choice to drink, smoke, party as a teenager.. then leads to this crap life.. all choices.. zero sympathy for anyone on the streets.. they make the choices that lead them there.
When I survived an IED blast and was required to have emergency surgery and in a medically induced coma for 6 weeks I was put on pain medication and had to taper off of it on my own...point is your talking out of your ass...lets see you deal with that kind of pain and make those kind of choices...you have a pretty heroic view of yourself
@@kylew.4896 - I certainly do because in my life I've made smart choices not to get involved with addictive bull crap.. I can't relate to the pain you've had.. most I've had is a kidney stone.. none the less.. That majority of ppl OD'ing on heroin aren't ppl that had surgery for gods sake. The majority start with smoking cigs, moving to trying weed, then giving some pills a shot, then to heroin.. you don't have to like or agree with this.. that's a fact.. Wish you the best of luck for sure.

It must be such a sense of accomplishment to have a free home given to you and payed for by the tax payers, who are struggling to pay their own bills after working 40-60 hrs a week. This is the reason no one worries about the decisions that may lead them to rock bottom, because at rock bottom everyone else has to pay for you to live.
Yup the REQUIREMENT should be simple FREE apartment but you get randomly drug tested every week supervised drug test like we got in the army.... i am ALL FOR HELPING THEM but they need to deserve it!!!! That’s literally the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard, how many fucking alcoholics and fat people the average peoson has in their family. These glass houses get very fragile when we start throwing stones. How many fat people are eating and eating and eating until their bodies give out and the taxpayers flip the bill for their medical care? What drug are they gonna test for for housing? Heroin? Crack? Alcohol? Cigarettes? Mood stabilizers? Anti anxiety pills? Extra fat? Are we really going to try to decide who deserves Government housing? What if someone applies and there cholesterol is through the roof and they’re a stroke waiting to happen? Or their body mass index dangerously unhealthy level? What if someone is depressed and may or may not wind up in a mental hospital? you need money for that or coverage? What difference does it make to you if someone truly benefits from government programs that were designed to Rehabilitate the poorest of the poor? what incentive does someone have become a productive member of society when their freezing under bridge? When they have no prospects for today no help for tomorrow no clean clothes to go apply for a job? No address to put on a job application no references nowhere to shower? Perhaps your tax dollars would be better spent on offshore drilling we’re just continuing to wage war and countries that don’t even want us there that cost a hell of a lot more than a house given to one person in a million that’s waited for 10 years
@@theresafasanelli1183 you're moronic..fat people work. You are making exaggerated and unrealistic comparisons and clearly are an addict, recovering addict, or family member of and therefore are biased.
So true!
Theresa Fasanelli because they are leaching off the government that's the problem, I have fallen on hard times, yet wasn't able to receive any government assistance, reason being: "I make too much money" which is a joke cuz I am not remotely wealthy, I'm sympathetic to these people, but honest to goodness, I work in the government sector & the entitlement among these recipients is pathetic!
Don't save them, they are ure unsaveable. It seems like they want to die.
Getting high is a choice. As harsh as it sounds, it's still a CHOICE.
some accountability has to be held from the addicts. . you can lead a horse to water. ....
I hope you can stay that naive for the rest of your life.
Nothing is a choice, it's all human nature and nurture:
if you can you will, if you can't you won't.
Society needs to create the best social conditions, so most people can.
Stimulate your EQ more than your IQ.
@@ryanvandongen7847 we are not born with an "instinct" or need to use drugs. to use a drug is purely a choice. what you say is naive and socially irresponsible. its like believing in the needle theory that providing addicts keeps them safe and us safe from diseases. wrong! the opposite happened along with streets and parks etc litered with needles. society isn't responsible for drug use nor should you, i, or anybody else be providing tolerance for it, that sends a message that its ok to experiment, f up your life and its our fault and problem. f that! addicts are not victims, they are weak emotionally maybe looking to escape from abuse, angry, reckless, sad or mentally ill. i think to prevent addiction tougher laws to hold all accountable and to make it harder to get drugs.
@@mindyhetrick9273 Thanks for your time and making me think :)
I wish we could sit in a nice cafe or sunny park to have this discussion.
(Sorry if my english is not right, i am Dutch) I think we are born with an instinct to avoid pain and pain has/takes many forms and expressions.
A couple weeks ago i met a young girl who cuts herself to relieve her emotional pain. Drugs or violence is not the real problem but a anwser or scream witch arises from many complex emotional and social problems.
You say they/some are weak emotionaly.
What makes someone emotional weak or menatally ill? Abuse/a bad childhood or/and genetics; i know nice people who grew up in fine families becoming severe mentally ill, or some veterans who used to be very strong mentally get addicted because they got traumatised while fighting for our society and did not get the right help when needed.
I just think we humans are very complex beings living in a faster changing and demanding world and we are all society and connected somehow.
We should strive to create fair/even conditions so most people can thrive, feel safe, loved and usefull, so we can benefit eachother.
I live in the Netherlands and we have a pretty good social and health system with a decent balance between goverment and market.
What do you think about the opioids situation in the US? With many hard labour jobs being replaced would universal basic income make a difference?
I do think weed should be legal because people will always smoke it and when it's legal it's more clean/less potent and addictive; hard drugs should be fought like war and children should be strongly educated. Even my grandma uses cbd oil.. :) We in the Netherlands are struggling with prostitution because it also will alway happen like alcohol and weed so we made it legal so these people would be safer above ground but there is human trafficing attached to it and afcorse trauma.. Complex 😉
I just feel lucky and try to help and learn as much as i can because i realise more every day that what makes us humans amazing also make us very fragile and vulnerable; anything can happen to anyone, but it starts with healthy families and communities so young people are confident and capable enough to make healty choices.
All the best!
@@ryanvandongen7847 NOTHING is a choice? Does that not seem a little dangerous and irresponsible to you? Are you just a robot, a marrionete, a puppet know the strings of destiny? Do you even want to live in a free country or have human rights?

I AM SICK of hearing and seeing the words "OPIOID CRISIS"!!! I agree that there were doctors over prescribing, and also doctors using pain (and fake pain) to make a profit. But not everyone prescribed pain medication gets addicted, and then turns to heroin when they can't get pills! I'm a chronic pain sufferer since an accident in 2009, and when I lost my insurance 4 months ago I couldn't afford my Pain Management doctor or my prescriptions. So while I'm waiting for the VA to get my doctor straightened out, I went through withdrawal and I've been in severe pain since. But I didn't go looking for heroin! Why don't they ever interview people like me? Why? Because then the statistics wouldn't be so scary! If someone is an addict (addicted to anything...food, porn, alcohol, gambling, or drugs) they will seek out drugs and take what's there. Yes the NUMBER of addicts has grown over the years, because the POPULATION has grown! The % of addicts in the US is still about the same. SMH 🤦🏼♀️ This bullshit has caused legitimate severe and chronic pain patients far too much stress and misery trying to get and KEEP their meds, and I'm afraid a couple of my fellow Disabled Veterans aren't going to last much longer! 😡
The number of addicts has gone up because population has increased...do you that comment discredits you. Congrats tho, you are definitely in an eliet class being able to quit, don't get complacent for a day, you're fighting a powerful enemy!
I believe your statement. I have seen videos on social media about people really getting high when removing wisdom tooth. I have never seen that elsewhere than in the United States.
The place where I live in, the dentist just numb the area, no one ever get high.
It may be not the doctors fault all the time. People may ask for stronger medicine rather bearing some pain.
I have spondylitis, my doctor gave me pills that has tramadol. I never took the pill unless the pain is unbearable. I excercise and use warm compress etc. My last resort is taking the pills.
Thank you. Well said. My accident was in 1993. Life was alright until addicts starting killing pharmacist's and other innocent people to get high. Which by the way is a choice. Yes America, getting high is a choice. Not an excuse. Grow up and take responsibility for your life, your recovery or your addiction. Whichever you choose.
Blaming the local Government for not providing enough help to people who don't want it is something you're expecting the people of Philadelphia to "wrap their head around" too. This shit works both ways!
Hey, Mayor Kenney. President Trump wants to build a wall to stop this! Amongst other important matters.
LET TRUMP BE TRUMP! ITS WORKING!!!
This could happen to any of us. Most people are just a pay check or two away from homelessness.
I hear you, but there is a difference being homeless and a drug addict.
Kelly seemed scared of her neighbors under that bridge they were probably being mean to her and pushed her out
How does someone contact Britt Carpenter?
Brandie Blakley hi! I’m Britt!!!
They have to evict them off that street. It is a public health hazard with human waste and trash that brings rats, roaches, fleas, bedbugs, etc. It's not fair to the people who pay rent and especially the children growing up in those neighborhoods. If you want to be a junkie go pitch your tent in the woods and go for it.
9:25.... giving a drug addict an apartment, but forgetting the little detail/ "little hurdle" that she doesnt have a phone? I dont get it. How is she supposed to be in contact with emergency services
OMG Frigin walk, take the bus, use the pay phone, carrier pigeon. Should we pay for a limo to come pick her lazy ass up and drive her. SMH we did way to much for these people it was a choice that they willingly made! Nobody put a gun to their head and made them use heroin. They knew what they were getting into when they started she was clean for 8 years and still went back. Sorry no compassion for being stupid.
Harlow Blackadder not true, she has a phone and is able to communicate via the phone.
Mike McGee she actually takes public transportation daily and has been able to sustain her living a lot on her own
@@phillyunknown7108 Then what is she complaining about? I know they have no problem walking 20 miles to get a hit if they had too. They will do anything for that but when it comes to anything else they make up excuses. There comes a time when you wore out all of your excuses and denials that people are just tired of giving them a chance. They want you to feel sorry for them but its old already been old.
Mike McGee this was the very first day she had her apartment when it was all new to her. She was trying to figure out how to work it all. You know nothing about her full situation or what she does now. She is doing amazing. She has busted her ass to work her recovery and has been doing awesome.

@@phillyunknown7108 glad hes doi g well. My dad's a heroin addict in the Kensington area. Just recently started to get clean for the 30th time. It's a process but I'm here with him every step ..
How is Kelly doing now would love an update.
Handling The Howard's she’s doing well. Day by day. But she’s doing very well.
Philly Unknown hi how is Eric & Kelly doing ?
So shes getting a place not clean and sober..unbelievable
I feel for these ppl but they have gave her a place..knowing she has changed I job an she won't be able to pay..yet they won't do the same for a single mother it father with their kids
That's right sir, a photo op for Kenney
I have been in the same shoes and thanks to God, got out of it. I hate to be a downer but babying people and handing them everything for free is not going to solve the problem. It all starts with you wanting to change your life, no one no matter what they do for you can get you sober.
The Mayor is a joke So now Philadelphia has to pay to get these ppl help that aren't even from the city Really
Is Kelly ok? Does anyone know and Eric?
Kelly was in my group last week at the methadone clinic. She looks like she is better.
@@laurennicolosi270 Thanks
Yw I'll update you if I see her again
What a lot that FEAR the WITHDRAWL!!!
Hi from uk i find sm of these progs so sad
Until the comradery between physicians and drug companies are addressed we are in a world of trouble
He has great intentions, but seems like he is speaking to himself.
He is most of the time. I was born there and lived there and did the same things these people are doing. They dont want to get clean they say they do. Life is too hard for them who wants to get up everyday bust your ass and have to go to work for 9 hours and pay bills. They would rather just sit around and get high all day. They go out and panhandle for a couple of hours and repeat it the next day. I was just in Oregon the birthplace of these camps they are all over the place and the state has condoned it now they are paying the price trying to do something about it. The way I got clean was to move as far away as possible from Philly and do not go looking for it. I can see some of them are very smart they see what the problem and want to fix it. However I hope I am wrong but I dont think she is going to make it. She is nothing but a bunch of excuses and complaints she constantly wants a pity party held for her. This guy Britt Carpenter is a Saint he has a lot of patience and compassion. The fault is the doctors and the pill manufacturers they need to be held accountable.
If I speak and one person listens and gets help then I am pleased with it. We may not be able to help them all, but we need to start somewhere. So i continue to show up, listen and try to laugh.
This is a worldwide problem. Housing needs to be affordable and back to the way it was where it was only a small percentage of your income. It's ridiculous anymore.
Why not address the DOCTORS and the PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES????? No one wants TO put charges against the real dealers!!!!! Unreal!!!!!!!!
It is atrocious to see these young girls, boys, women, men, suffer in this way, it is atrocious, they are human people who have been wrong to fall into the drug trap. We are millions of people and in comparison to them we are doing well in climbs and economically, let's help them ..........
Waste of resources.
It would be great if we can get all our drug addicts and crazy people to relocate to Philadelphia .. That way you can deal with them properly in your City and we can live in peace in our City ...
Who is the man at 2:10?
kenny is the worst shocked he's not taxing the homeless
"under the bridge" by Red the Hot Chillie peppers...
I use to live under the bridge in this video. I now have three years of continuous sobriety
The government needs to help them, leaving them there isn’t doing anybody any good. Most are stuck and have no way out. I bet their government is living well off the taxpayers money smh
Most started off pain killers and became addicted, when that wares off, they start using more dangerous drugs, who supplies the drugs.....the government!; so they should clean them up!!! SMH
Has anyone seen or have an update on Kelly?
No talk of the pharmaceutical companies responsibility. They made a ton of money while costing everybody else, tax payers, people, cities, family's. No blame at all.
Trump actually did say dont put drug users in jail we need to put them in rehab. President Trump also said that he takes
addiction seriously. President Trump said my bother was am addict. Before someone comments on my post do some research and dont say hes racist.
Honest question: Why are these guys trying to save the addicts, liars and junkies from Overdosing?
It's not like you save him today from OD and tomorrow he will discover how to travel at the light speed.... he will be back on the street for the next drug
Do Thailand way, it's the only way
Have you ever had someone addicted and lost? Have you ever lost someone due to the addiction? Everyone is somebody’s someone.
Kelly's scared because it seems like she knows she may not be ready but is afraid and she's trying to say that but hes too excited for her and i wish I could talk and help her
diann h she’s doing very well.
@@phillyunknown7108I'm so glad
