Beautiful, exquisite phrasing, sincere emotion, outstanding tonality, and extension . . . coming from the heart of a lady, whom I KNOW is the genuine article . . . an artist, a devoted wife, a consummate performer . . . and a generosity of spirit to her fans that will never be forgotten! I am so glad, that I had the opportunity to hear you perform, meet you . . . and find out just how kind and unforgettable you really are! Remember March 7th, 1998 at the Peace Center . . . I won't forget . . . what a most wonderful privilege and the opportunity it was to meet you and feel the warmth of your personality -- I salute you -- a great artist . . . and a friend. Thank you, so much -- I will not forget you!

Cleo Laine is on any occasion just exceptional but teamed with her Johnny she was just amazing! I admired her work with others but together these two made musical love!

This jazz version is a mesmerizing play off of the straight version. No competition here, just complement. What's with these (few) critical comments?

On top of everything else, she is a delightful person. She and John made me feel so welcome. I was just a college student but couldn't have been more excited about meeting me.

CLEO LAINE - Friendly Persuasion (Thee I Love)
At the Sinatra Family Forum I've always meant to sing the praises of Cleo Laine - England's greatest gift to jazz singing: I've been a life-long fan, though Cleo's RUclips videos seldom come my way. Coincidentally or not, I'd just celebrated "my favorite Pat Boone song" in our 'Other Celebrities' folder, where our newest member AIDA, "a student in Russia” has just revived Pat's dormant thread.
As if reading my mind, the intuitive genius that is RUclips has just sent me a link to Cleo's version of THEE I LOVE, which she transforms into something akin to olde English poetry, set to a modern melody - and not what it actually was: a Quaker-speech influenced, Oscar-nominated, song from the 1956 Gary Cooper Civil War movie, Friendly Persuasion (its alternate title).
While enjoying this, my “new favorite version” at RUclips, I Googled her name and was reminded that, God willing, 'when October goes' this year Cleo will be 94. Having outlived by 11 years her husband -- England's best-known jazz sax great, John (“Sir John”) Dankworth. They always appeared together, as here on this wonderful video. Wiki reminds us that John Dankworth died on 6 February 2010, aged 82, on the afternoon before a(nother) show with Cleo.
Thanks for sharing, Shakira S. Celebrated this day at Sinatra Family Forum - "Siriusly Sinatra" - MY FAVORITE VERSION, YOURS TOO? sinatrafamily.com/forum/showthread.php/50225-My-Favorite-Version-%28yours-too-%29?p=1309561#post1309561

Thank you for your comment. Absolutely agree. Musical sensitivity and singing excellence as only Dame Cleo can do.
Came across the "Shakespeare and all that jazz" videos on YT the other day, what a joy.

I'm sorry. Pat Boon OWNS IT! I find this version TOTALLY unrecognizable ... just like Bobby Hatfield of The Righteous Brothers will ALWAYS own Unchained Melody. (I'll bet this lady's great on somethin' else.)

I love this version, It is totally recognizable and above all musical. Cleo Laine is one of the 20th century great voices along with Ella and Sarah.

Her version of "On a Clear Day" its pretty fantastic in my opinion. That performance is infamous for the belts followed by a high G at the end.

@@gamer1X12 Before seeing this video, I never heard of her before. Consequently, my evaluation of how good a singer she is was based entirely on her rendition of this song. But, as I already said, "I'll bet this lady's great on somethin' else.

@@lawrencequave7361 I'm not surprised you haven't heard of her before, you obviously know nothing about music. To even compare Pat Boone's version with the above shows breathtaking ignorance.
Whilst Boone's version may have been 'nice,' he doesn't/didn't possess the vocal ability - i.e. the phrasing, intonation or soul - to equal this. Cleo Laine is in a league above, and one to which he could never aspire. (and I'm sure you think the Righteous Bros. version of Unchained Melody was the original)😄

Cleo Laine's performance with this Dimitri Tiomkin's beautiful quaker's romantic ballad was a complete disaster & created a musical performance foreign to Tiomkin's beautiful romantic ballad. Cleo Laine, you are not a romantic ballad vocalist, but just a jazz singer who was successful with the(your husband) Johnny Dankworth's orchestra. If you can remember Pat Boone's chart topping incomparable performance, you should be very embarrassed for your intrusion into that performance. Golden words of justified criticism by Peter E. Farrar. To - Lawrence Quave, with reference to your words of criticism in regards to this ballad, you are 100% correct. Peter Farrar.

While I like Pat's version best I would hardly call this one a disaster. You're coming down a little too hard on Cleo.

White Heart Pub Acton West London back in the day saw these wannabees alongside the likes of Tubby Hayes, George Shearing, Acker Bilk and his squeeze Ollie Paterson and other such newbies such as Bowie and Kieth Moo, all up and coming of the day, all trying to climb the original American step ladder of real authenticity. Few of the UK artists ever made it to the top. John/Johnny, (he kept changing his name as indeed his ego demanded it), whilst Cleo from Southall further up the road, stayed the course and no doubt was the Queen Charlotte to her Johnny type "Charles the third King" type of guy. Their greatest achievement was probably The Stables jazz centre residence whereby they encouraged and trained new talent. Overall they contributed greatly to the UK growing jazz scene but The Bull pub by the Thames nearer to the heart of London saw really great UK talent on display. Many nights in the backroom drinking a pint served through a hatch, one could sit on a hard bench and could enjoy artists like Ronnie Scott blowing after his sessions at his club in Soho. Jazz has always been like a local suburban Tennis Club, it's clicky and sometimes up its own ass'. What do I base my opinion on ? Simple...I have pals in the jazz "Industry" and they confirmed privately to me that I'm pretty much on target. Johnny's sax alongside Cleo's laboured Pat Boon song, was insensitive and raucous if one truly has an ear for music. As a great British Classical Composer once said, "The Continental Europeans love their music whilst the Brits tended more to like "the sound" that music makes". p.s. I've been on the planet for over 82 years....I'm a true music lover and appreciate ALL forms of Authentic Music....I'm never impressed by wannabees. 🤔🤓....(they aren't impressed by me either). 🤣 The late Tina May was truly gifted ....check her out....I once knew her on a personal level. Tina was naturally gifted but struggled to make a living. Most jazzers sadly still do.
