I saw this before in its black and white version. I can't say the colorization improves it, but it is definitely worth watching twice. It's as much a family drama as it is a crime drama. Strong performances by all the actors.

This is great flick. Not because of any artistic or philosophical value but for its economy. No wasted dialog or action, and for getting by with sitcom lighting and cutting from scene to scene quickly when a scene completed its job. And it had time to give Mike Mazurki quite a few lines, probably by its avoidance of car-chases.
That's what separates these movies from today's garbage. This was like one of those Randolph Scott Westerns from the same period - 85 minutes of tension, a good veteran cast, no clichés, no unnecessary expository dialogue...just a good film from start to finish.
I like how movies become time capaules. The judges office at 21:15 looks like what I imagine an old man's room in the 50s would appear, stuck 2 decades earlier. Lupo's office at 25:14 is all midcentury clean.
I agree with you, especially on the last part, no plot. I’d say though it’s worse than that! No story at all, no or thin plots that aren’t even adhered to throughout the “story”, weak characters and characterization and the absolute fact that no one seems to be able to come up with decent endings. Movies just STOP now, they don’t end.
Plus filthy cursing truout the movies today & all the LAW OFFICIAL actors are TOLD to play the part acting like SLOBS.....SLOPPY LOOKING APPEARENCE is important.....and HATE YOUR OWN COUNTRY !!!!!!!!!!

A terrific film about the tough guys in the underworld where everything is staged and controlled by the secretive syndicate. Even though the movie is old, I felt that the syndicate might as well be an early version of today's deep state. It was also a liberating experience to see an emotional Anne Bancroft as Katherine Lupo in her attempt to free herself from a domineering father and his criminal gang. I was intensely concentrated throughout the film.
Excellent movie have seen it from time to over a few years , good acting all around , the movie always noving along. Conti and Ann Bancroft Excellent in it.
