"Woof" was my third live Hannah show. It very much had the loose feel of a work in progress, like she was winging it, almost making it up as she went along. And it made me want to come back and see it a couple more times to see how it was all coming together. (Sadly, my budget only had room for one ticket.) Hannah's shows are like a chronicle of her growth and development as a human being. Each one is a gem on its own; together they form a marvelous journey.
Her special “Douglas” is my favorite of all time! She’s someone who brought such a different take to my experience of comedy, and it helps me understand myself better as well.
One of the few comics who you can’t predict where they’re headed AT ALL. Just saw Hannah’s new show and it was a wild ride with lots of hilarious jokes and lots of realness. Hannah gives us her whole personality and that means a lot. Loved it!
21:04 - The Hannah Gadsby public service warning about social media: _“All you need to know about a rushing river is that it's rushing and it's dangerous to get in.“_
"I can't play the game." I know this was in regards to social media but feeling it when it was said, I could feel the blanket of it. Hearing the words said out loud. Thank you for sharing so honestly, speaking to authentically and never apologizing. Everyone's brain is wired uniquely for ourselves some just have roads less traveled we get to walk. Bests
God I love listening to Hannah speak. I've really been putting off this podcast for so long as the both of you are maybe the two comedians I most respect. You're not just funny you both have an incredible ability to take difficult topics and the pain you've suffered and tell it in a way that instead of bitter is awe-filled, joyful, and terribly human. There's an appreciation for life in the way you both tackle your hardships. And it's what we walk away with as well. I am so very entertained and in awe your abilities as an artist 🎶 and a fan. 🎉🎉🎉
I love Hannah Gadsby so much - lots of neurodivergence in my family and it's such a relief to hear her take and sensibility. Also, I wonder if the Dingo ate my baby - age might have to do with it. I'm in my 60s and I remember the news stories, and the movie, etc.
The movie is "A Cry in the Dark" (1988) with Meryl Streep uttering the now-famous line "the dingo ate my baby" which was then mocked by Julia Louis-Dreyfus on Seinfeld, which is where most Americans now know it from. (Streep was playing Lindy Chamberland, an Australian woman who was wrongly thought to have killed her baby)
Hannah - the joke works! Just as you delivered it. No need to narrate or explain it. The mix of reactions from the audience is likely because it is funny and then immediately challenging/thought-provoking.
I believe people who laugh at dingo joke are laughing remembering Elaine say "a dingo ate my baby" on Seinfeld. That was a very funny scene. Only a small percentage of us know the whole awful history of what happened.
I think the Dingo joke works as is. The context is pretty clear, just add “the mother” instead of “she” her going to jail and being exonerated and the dingo actually eating the baby is kind of irrelevant. Her going to jail for grieving wrong is the sentiment.
An autistic dad, Robert Roberson is set to be executed in the State of Texas for exactly the same thing. He didn’t shake his baby, but he also didn’t grieve “correctly”.
I figured out immediately that she was not at all a techniphobe but simply didn't like the contact technology brings. I was surprised that wasn't absolutely obvious.
You can sing "shouty shouty crinkle brain" to "shimmy shimmy ko ko bop" from 1959. I'm not sure why you'd want to, but at least now you're aware of this.
about your Dad's way, yes, I'm convinced that's a thing, anger existing for perhaps forbidden to know reasons and just looking for a place to happen, absolutely.
no. no. do NOT explain the dingo joke. and leave it in as is. they either get it or they don't. it's perfect as is. she went to jail for not doing sad correctly. and that is the truth. as Pryor said "truth and funny will follow".
I don’t find Hannah particularly funny, but clearly a lot of people do and that’s great. I’d like to laugh at the things they say and Hannah’s perspective and tone and inflection and mannerisms etc.. but I personally just don’t laugh. Wish them all the best and continued success!
Drop the dingo joke, especially here in the U.S.. Unless everyone in the audience is over 50. I remember the real story, I remember Meryl Streep starring in the movie. I didn’t know the real woman was exonerated. That’s great to hear. How long was she in prison? I need to ChatGPT this.
@zippymacadoo6336 Well that's a bold statement.. guys, I don't exist! Lol. She's a preacher in my eyes, not 1 laugh out of her specials. She made my sister cry though.
Not all comedy need to be for everyone. I think she's fucking hilarious but if you don't that's fine there's nothing wrong with that. There seems to be this opinion out there that comedy is some how this objective form of entertainment and it's just not it never has been.
You should remove "Dr." From your title on social media. You didn't earn a phD. It's like saying "I'm a cop" because you helped some kids cross the street before school.
They have an honorary doctorate. Do you also chastise Stephen Colbert for doing the same thing? If I were given an honorary doctorate, I would slap "Dr." on all my correspondence. For a combination of satire and insecurity.
@evilpenguinmas absolutely 100% and I'm judging you too for thinking valor theft is okay. Hannah, Stephen and you all need to take a lesson in integrity. Hannah needs to remove comedian from her Bio too. How much stolen valor does she need?

"Not immediately." (I actually laughed out loud while riding on a bus and now everyone thinks I'm strange.)
Her special “Douglas” is my favorite of all time! She’s someone who brought such a different take to my experience of comedy, and it helps me understand myself better as well.

Oh, the dingo ate my baby joke doesn’t work in America because we are learning in real time that this poor woman’s baby was killed and that is sad.
_"...a bunch of people with shouty shouty crinklebrain on the internet..."_
21st Century encapsulated.

I’ve never seen her smile so much. It was endearing whenever she spoke of her wife. 😀
This was a joy, start to finish. Love both of ya
They are great. I love all their specials

I'm in my 40's and immediately knew what it was about! So... hmmm.
I always enjoy these chats, but man this one was particularly lovely.
I would attend multiple art history lectures given by Hannah, I love her take.

Interestingly, it was originally called "Evil Angels" in Australia, they changed the name for US audiences
I don't know the rhythm she's looking for, but I believe all of that can go into the joke what both of them said
I watched this instead of doing my job I was so dang excited to see Hannah as a guest! WORTH IT 💖
Love this one!!
High bar. Best episode yet!
I also don't understand time. But I do understand timing, or better yet-rhythm 💜
One of the best eps yet
100% agree - listened to it and realised I had to watch it as well. Better the second time.
I want to tour museums with Hannah. She's quirkily brilliant.
Hannah is a brilliant role model for humanity! ❤❤❤
I love Hannah, I have seen all three Netflix specials more than twice each
two of my favorites
I wish I had a Jenno❣️

Not understanding time is a very real thing. It’s called time blindness.
Oh hello Hannah is brilliant omg 😂
The film was first called "Evil Angels" in Australia, they changed the name for US audiences
so good
hannah is a genius in comedy. would love to see james acaster on this show.

8/23 is my birthday, so I'm going to just.... take that.

Also I'm sad Hannah didn't say they felt like an Ogre between Anna and Brittany😂
Oh look, side note, I did a PhD thesis on the complexities of self-branding, woo.
❤
I wish I understood her in the way so many of the people in the comments understand her.
3:44 non tech aka “luddite”
When you shake that tree, a Koala might drop on your head.

turning the Dingo joke into an infodump sounds like something I would do, not you pros ;)
But gauging how well context clues will work from country to country is probably the trickiest part of the job.
Please laugh directly into the microphone more

Luddite!
oh she finally said it.
I don’t know why people think she’s funny. I’ve watched many of her sets hoping for a laugh but…maybe that’s just me.
She’s at best an amusing TED talker.
It's just you. I find her hilarious.

@@something_something42 nobody said that. It's subjective, and she's not for me.

@Bilow_Selhi who are you talking about? Hannah's degree is in Art History.
@zippymacadoo6336 I'm aware. Why does she label herself as "Dr." On social media? She hasn't earned a ph.d.
They have an honorary doctorate. Do you also chastise Stephen Colbert for doing the same thing? If I were given an honorary doctorate, I would slap "Dr." on all my correspondence. For a combination of satire and insecurity.
