Had a 65, 66 a 70 and a 72....both 70's played and sounded better. I still have the 70.....never to leave my sight. Great vid... 1970 is much clearer and has the bite needed. Cheers
Excellent review . The lake placid blue modern era p bass is more to my liking . Sound wise it had higher output , a bit more growl and superior sustain . This is of course my own humble opinion . A brand new bass that delivers this well . When I upgrade to another p bass I'll definitely be taking a closer look at this bass .
They both sound very similar to me. I wonder how much of the difference is in the maple vs. rosewood fretboard. I know the maple should sound a little brighter and I think this comparison is a little noticeable but not by much. Probably just preference. Great video!
I think most of the tone difference is due to the darker Pure Vintage '63 pickups that come in the American Original 60's Precisions. Both Nice basses!
I THINK the B necks were 40mm nut, C's closer to the 60's Spec (42/43mm). The Nate Mendel signature is based off his 71 P which has a B neck with 40mm nut. My preference has always been either a 70's with a 40mm nut or the 50's "baseball bat" necks
I have a mij P-bass and put a Mighty Mite jazz neck on it. An awesome combination and a perfect fit, no woodwork necessary! And I have a Bacchus Jazz bass copy in exactly the same colour as your Thomann loaner. I know how you feel about the colour, it is really beautiful.
I have a 58. I can definitely hear the maple neck tone on the 70. More grunt, less thump. I believe you could order a custom neck, but I’ve also heard that early 70’s precision had a narrow nut stock, but maybe it was 40mm not 38mm like a jazz. I have a jazzmaster with a c width that would have had to be custom order
Exactly, it was about 40mm - my friend had US made '75 or '76 PB with that kind of neck and I used to have Japanese Fernandes PB with the same profile. Very comfy actually if not to say perfect neck profile!
I'm wondering what is the importance of the fingerboard in the sound, compared to the pickups. Modern P bass seems to be more woody, more warm. Is this because of the rosewood fingerboard ?
Wood makes next to no difference on electric instruments, that modern fender has the “pure vintage 63” pickups which are design to sound old and warm with higher bass response
Another great video! Yes indeed Fender offered different size necks which has been well documented for many years. Some folks have even researched the different names & initials found on the necks. It's funny how Fender & Gibson instruments from the 70s & 80s are coveted now; back then when I was starting out they were considered inferior to instruments from Japan. None of that really matters to the person who finds an instrument that speaks them ;)
The 70 "steps right on out there" compared to the reissue; more punch/clarity to the 70. Love the Jazz neck on the p-bass. Didn't know such a creature was out there.
I have two '71 P-basses. One with a rosewood fretboard with the narrower J-bass neck profile, the other one a fretless rosewood fingerboard with the standard wider P-Bass profile. All pots were dated from 1970.
You can get Fender necks at Solo Music Gear just north of Toronto and they ship. I put a Jazz neck on my MIJ P- bass and in my case it fits like a glove, no woodwork needed.
They don't sound the same old bass sounds more low tuned modern sounds more high tuned like a guitar i don't know if they changed the pickup or what i just think modern bass sounds like a guitar and I don't like it
it drives me crazy, all these Fender bass models, all these vintage custom shop pickups, much better quality control... blah blah blah, the can't get them to sound like the old ones which is only the most important thing
@@rrdream2400 They can, but they leave that to masterbuilt and custom shop instruments. Otherwise, you would have little incentive to purchase one. Most, if not all, P bass "tone" comes from electronics + string + amp combination
@@jrdPalacios well the amp and strings are easy enough to change, so it's just the electronics in that case. I'm not sure I buy that. Those 70's P's were cheaply made yet they have great tone. They have a snarl to them, the new ones sound too polite, they don't bark when you dig into them.

Both sounds good, but i can get the same sound from chinese bass which cost 100 $! I really don't know why fender are so expensive! Sorry, but 2000$ for p bass is insanity!
Both sound good but I like the clarity of the old one. That's a killer bass!
Ove always made it a special day.

well... yeah... ;-)

This time DR guys will give you shit because of throwing the box away like that. I won't, that was funny.
R.i.p. Ove Bosch VERY SAD NEWS.

My bass player has an early 70's P bass with a Jazz neck. They absolutely sold them that way.

I love the 1970.actually I own one just like yours my friend. Great sounding love it.

yes the rosewood makes a huge difference, hard to compare a maple to a rosewood in a model P bass because they have different feels.

Both sound good! Of course, i like vintage P and J bass 60-70's but i can't pay 6000 or 20000$ for this. Its insane price ...:(
Found a 71 for $2700 I’m hoping he bites on my trade offer of an American deluxe strat.
It’s a little misleading to compare a maple neck to a rosewood one tho.
I have two '71 P-basses. One with a rosewood fretboard with the narrower J-bass neck profile, the other one a fretless rosewood fingerboard with the standard wider P-Bass profile. All pots were dated from 1970.
Both are great
From 1970 you could order a P with an A neck profile. The C neck was replaced by the B in 68 .
love the B neck, it's just perfect
Thanks - good comparison! BTW - I love your shirt - what is it - where did you get it?
Haha, thanks! I got the shirt from some random shop. No internet involved here ;-)
I love the idea of vintage instruments, but nine times out of ten I’ll go with new construction.
I think the maple fingerboard makes a difference. I always preferred the Maple.
Stupid question - what kind of stands are you using?
Not stupid at all ;-) TAMA, Ultimate stands and Guitar Grip wall hangers. THX for watching!
Nice deep tone the new one!
I think the Maple neck is a little brighter ... I have 62 reissue P Bass , and I’d like to swap the P neck for a J neck ..I just need to find one ..
You can get Fender necks at Solo Music Gear just north of Toronto and they ship. I put a Jazz neck on my MIJ P- bass and in my case it fits like a glove, no woodwork needed.
Lucky you indeed!
Hmm , I prefer the tone of the New One, it’s deeper sounding.
I agree.
Well to my shot out ears....I like the sound of the new one, however would bet the old one would perform better in an actual live mix.
They don't sound the same old bass sounds more low tuned modern sounds more high tuned like a guitar i don't know if they changed the pickup or what i just think modern bass sounds like a guitar and I don't like it
The new one all the way for me.
Hey Ove , get in touch with Henner, he could help you out about the neck.. if you don't know him, PM me.. great vid , by the way!
THX Raoul!
Nice playing. Old one is much clearer.
Oldster is more open sounding. Best dollar value is probably on the noob.
Fender does and has offered different necks on their basses, sometimes they'll even have roasted maple
I dig the old ones tone better
Old Gold. Waaay clearer. Can't put the finger how come with nowadays tech and can't at least produce the sound of the old ones...

I like the old
1970
1970 little open sound, more light! For me it's better
yeah, you'd have to have the same neck to do a real comparison.
The differences you hear are not due to age or anything else, but to the different wood of the neck
the old girl is killi'n..

You could have compared Basses with the same necks at least?
The old has more bass punch the new sounds like a guitar weak and like a mid
Both sounds good, but i can get the same sound from chinese bass which cost 100 $! I really don't know why fender are so expensive! Sorry, but 2000$ for p bass is insanity!
You're right. P bass is a legend and unique but it's easily imitable.
