    I am speechless.
This is as complex as sword making… my god.
So much effort, time, patience… and how much do they get paid?
    Is a freaking shoe!
From now on, all shoemakers will have my respect and I will appreciate much more their work.

      "A freaking shoe!"
Dude. Shoes are essential as food is.
Our feet are weak today. Specially in colder climate we'd be screwed without shoes.
If the supply line of material goods to stores was cut tomorrow. This guy would be as essential as the local farmer.

This brings back so many memories; although I never did the cement construction we used to make our own welts and sew them into the channelled insole and then stitch on the sole. These shoes are not comparable to the massed-produced 'comfortable' throw-away shoes of Chinese factories. I remember men coming into the shop with their grandfather's shoes to be repaired for them. They were like good wine, the older they got the better they were. Yes they need wearing in but you will not get more comfortable shoes as they blend with your feet. The shoemaker makes it look easy but it takes years to be able to do so and it is worth it.

My grandpa was a traditional shoemaker in Guatemala (Called Zapateros in there) in 1940's, I was just a little girl in 80's so I have a few memories of him doing his job. But my mom always told me about her own memories of watching him working with passion, tinny details and perfectionism like your job. Congratulations of having this amazing job. Excelent video and its the best way to show us how to make shoes.

Hey, I have a question (specifically about the heel): why do they need to add layers, instead of just having the heel already carved out with the sole of the shoe?

    • @fadifreih

That would require a really thick dinosaur skin

    • @robertsherman9975

Brandon Hernandez due to the leather thickness itself and multiple layers for longevity of the heel itself. Thus when the heels get worn, they can replace. These are Not your throw away shoes. With care, these will last a great many years.

Incredible mastery of a hugely important craft! I am detail oriented, but I get too caught up and stressed out over details - I get caught up in wanting things to be too perfect, and I'd be stressed over making th slightest mistake that for most others would be no big deal. Anxiety and depression causes me, and others, too worry incessantly.
But watching this master at work is truly mesmerizing. Human hands producing perfection!

Why go through all this trouble and not put a goodyear welt? It would make me feel so unsafe using them and knowing the sole is only being held to the upper by glue. Why are they not stitched?

No stitching, very few if not any nails.....that must be some mighty strong glue.

Please continue to make videos. Your work is beautiful and I would love to be able to bring my work to the same level someday. I saw in another comment that you have a new course, and it's located in Savannah. I frequently vacation to Savannah as I attended school there. Do you have a shop that I can visit to see more of your work in person?

Saw it on your apron, I've sorted it. Also the shoemaking school part would explain why you're so confident in yourself and make such an amazing finished piece.

Many thanks for this video. Two questions. (1) Do you ever worry that the glued on welt will come off at some point? (2) Is there a way to Blake (Mackay) stitch a cemented shoe by hand?

    • @BirbTheCrow
      @BirbTheCrow 5 лет назад +2

Answer for your first question is : Yes, it might happen, but these glues are really strong and if you let them dry for 24 hours they gain a lot of strength. It takes a lot of time before they come off and when that happens you can resole your shoe.
For the second : Yes, there is, but it is slightly different construction when you want to stitch that.

    •  3 года назад +1

Glues are actually very durable if the surfaces are properly prepped and the appropriate drying times are observed. And it's not impossible to stitch the shoes after the fact but there's not much sense in doing it.

All that cutting, scraping and rasping right against a finished upper, a handmade shoe is a wonder of skill. What kind of adhesive does he spread on with his fingers?

What a lot of work and skilled craftsmanship to make a shoe that is only stuck together with glue and is unlikely to last very long.
