I am speechless. This is as complex as sword making… my god. So much effort, time, patience… and how much do they get paid? Is a freaking shoe! From now on, all shoemakers will have my respect and I will appreciate much more their work.
"A freaking shoe!" Dude. Shoes are essential as food is. Our feet are weak today. Specially in colder climate we'd be screwed without shoes. If the supply line of material goods to stores was cut tomorrow. This guy would be as essential as the local farmer.
This brings back so many memories; although I never did the cement construction we used to make our own welts and sew them into the channelled insole and then stitch on the sole. These shoes are not comparable to the massed-produced 'comfortable' throw-away shoes of Chinese factories. I remember men coming into the shop with their grandfather's shoes to be repaired for them. They were like good wine, the older they got the better they were. Yes they need wearing in but you will not get more comfortable shoes as they blend with your feet. The shoemaker makes it look easy but it takes years to be able to do so and it is worth it.
My grandpa was a traditional shoemaker in Guatemala (Called Zapateros in there) in 1940's, I was just a little girl in 80's so I have a few memories of him doing his job. But my mom always told me about her own memories of watching him working with passion, tinny details and perfectionism like your job. Congratulations of having this amazing job. Excelent video and its the best way to show us how to make shoes.
People like you are inspiring so many of us to make our own Boots. Thanks for sharing. Power to the movement of real men who cannot wear anything less than a real shoe with real leather and a real construction instead of those flimsy assembly line shoes.
I am a fully trained Morden day cobbler with many years experience in shoe repairs. You are a grand master at what you do. Sadly I have to use machinery which couldn’t even get close to what you have produced. Amazing keep up the good work. A shame we didn’t get to see the shoes in all their glory
Hey, I have a question (specifically about the heel): why do they need to add layers, instead of just having the heel already carved out with the sole of the shoe?
Brandon Hernandez due to the leather thickness itself and multiple layers for longevity of the heel itself. Thus when the heels get worn, they can replace. These are Not your throw away shoes. With care, these will last a great many years.

I'm 45 and only now I realise the value of REAL Leather (upper, inside and base sides) shoes. It is a masterpies! Bravo!! It could be an old way but it is so NATURAL!
I love watching simple things that you never think much of take shape. I especially liked the piece of broken glass used to shave off edges. I would have never thought of that.
Extremely fun being able to make something of beauty with little more than the strength and skill in our hands. Something you would never see in those all-in-one food and clothes stores.Something that would /could stand the test of time.

I am detail oriented, but I get too caught up and stressed out over details - I get caught up in wanting things to be too perfect, and I'd be stressed over making th slightest mistake that for most others would be no big deal. Anxiety and depression causes me, and others, too worry incessantly. But watching this master at work is truly mesmerizing. Human hands producing perfection!
This is the most therapeutic video I have seen in ages. I'm studying shoemaking in Finland, and oh I almost fell asleep due to the relaxing effect of all the sounds and familiar workingmethods... just beautiful, thank you :) wish I had a pair to work on right now..
Its a very well made shoe. The time and experience put into this is priceless. Top of the line materials and all, I only have one question to whoever that can enlighten me. Why go through all this trouble and not put a goodyear welt? It would make me feel so unsafe using them and knowing the sole is only being held to the upper by glue. Why are they not stitched?
Man, that was intense! I love a Good Year welt, but I must say I'm impressed at the level of skill needed to do a cemented shoe. BTW, this video was fine without narration because it really allowed us to observe your process without distraction.

Wow that shoe turned out beautifully. Absolute work of art. They would have cost at least $350 U.S. a pair, but most likely worth it due to the quality craftsmanship and labour involved. It would be really cool to buy some shoes like this and get a little USB stick in the box with the video of them being made!

Хвала всевышнему... интернету ))) Не думал, что смогу и увидеть ещё где такое... прям ностальджи. АБСОЛЮТНО и полностью ручная работа. Правда пара клеевая, а не классика - шитая пара... там ваще... одна пара неделю-две шилась/собиралась! Но и такого сейчас уже мало кто и может, да и знает о таком тоже мало кто. У меня так и инструментов (всех!) таких уже и не осталось... А тут весь проц, и всё как по хрестоматии: ручная затяжка (формовка) пары, настоящая рантовка, стекление урезов подошвы и каблука, реально кожаный набор каблука, горячая восковая отделка, весь доклад - натуральная кожа! ... я и перечислять все нюансы заманаюсь ))) Стесняюсь и спросить скок за такой чудесарий сча и просят... в тысячах баксов, ежели на заказ! А я и такое делал, и шитые пары, и выворотные для танцев народных... И много ещё чего, включая уникальные пары со своим дизайном, разработкой и технологией))) Кстати, о статистике - за полтора десятка лет моей такой работы в молодости ( и эпизодически, нерегулярно, ещё лет десять после) я собрал порядка 20 000 пар самой разной обуви лично. Попали мне однажды такие же тухли в секонде....Дай думаю куплю.Осмотрел...Вещь...Все как на видео.Заглянул во внутрь...Подкладка кожа...На кожаной подошве металлическая бляха с названием фирмы...Короче носить не сносить.Купил,надел и понял почему они в секонде...Такое ощущение что они железные.При ходьбе сотрясаются не только мозги но вся брюшная полость...Это обувь для Англицких графьев и герцогов....Надел вышел простоял и снова зашёл.Простому люду больше подходят летом мокасины или кроссовки а зимой ботинки с заливной подошвой или сапоги.P.S.Сдал я их в другой секонд за 1 доллар.

Many thanks for this video. Two questions. (1) Do you ever worry that the glued on welt will come off at some point? (2) Is there a way to Blake (Mackay) stitch a cemented shoe by hand?
Answer for your first question is : Yes, it might happen, but these glues are really strong and if you let them dry for 24 hours they gain a lot of strength. It takes a lot of time before they come off and when that happens you can resole your shoe. For the second : Yes, there is, but it is slightly different construction when you want to stitch that.

Glues are actually very durable if the surfaces are properly prepped and the appropriate drying times are observed. And it's not impossible to stitch the shoes after the fact but there's not much sense in doing it.
All that cutting, scraping and rasping right against a finished upper, a handmade shoe is a wonder of skill. What kind of adhesive does he spread on with his fingers?

Many thanks for this video. Two questions. (1) Do you ever worry that the glued on welt will come off at some point? (2) Is there a way to Blake (Mackay) stitch a cemented shoe by hand?
Answer for your first question is : Yes, it might happen, but these glues are really strong and if you let them dry for 24 hours they gain a lot of strength. It takes a lot of time before they come off and when that happens you can resole your shoe.
For the second : Yes, there is, but it is slightly different construction when you want to stitch that.
Glues are actually very durable if the surfaces are properly prepped and the appropriate drying times are observed. And it's not impossible to stitch the shoes after the fact but there's not much sense in doing it.
