      true, plus i'm just gonna add this here since they never mention it, but they hint at it and it's important for the story.
      The bomb wasn't just a regular bomb, it was canonically a nuke, with radioactive fallout and a whole lotta radiation. It's such an important detail but a lot of people miss it because it's not ever straight out said to them.

    You've seen the other comment saying in the Manga it was Malice instead of Evolution in the line "Humanity's infinite potential for Evolution."
    in japanese manga usually has Furigana which is a reading guide on how to pronounce Kanji character, which is done by having the Kana (hiragana or katakana) next to the Kanji.
    So in the manga for this scene had Netero said 悪意 and normally 悪意 would be pronounce as akui (あくい) and the furigana would have akui in kana next to the kanji but instead of that Togashi had put in the Kanji for evolution, 進化 (shinka).
    This obviously only works in text so the anime just had evolution (which is what was pronounced).

    • @Afreshio
      @Afreshio 11 месяцев назад +3

      I've read this before. There's plenty of people (in the past myself included) misunderstanding the correct meaning of that word or Kanji, because at this point is a meme.
      But great job at explaining so many people, like myself in the past, who doesn't have any or much idea of the intricate Japanese writing system can get a clear picture of the meaning of this phrase. Or double meaning in this case.

      I am Japanese.
      In Japanese manga, this scene is represented as a reading of the kanji meaning evolution next to the kanji meaning malice.
      This could not be expressed in the anime, so it seems to be translated only as evolution.
      I think many of us Japanese find in this expression a part of the wonderful expression of this work.
      I am one of them.
      The weapons we create for war are an evolution born of human malice, and Meruem, who was only a little older than a month old, was so superior that he was born with the awareness and pride of being the king to whom the entire species was entrusted.
      But Netero may have been the last to tell him that Meruem was not above human malice and evolution.

    What I love about that last scene is how, in an arc that has been repeatedly making a point of terror as a result of experiencing extremely powerful and malicious Aura, the greatest moment of fear is experienced by the character with the strongest Aura from a character who at that point had no Aura left at all, it was Netero's pure will and words that terrified Meruem.

      But the plottwist is that Netero was ultimately playing for his own amusement.

  • @Madchairman
    @Madchairman 11 месяцев назад +24

    Lindsay’s line of “enhancing his own heart” is so freakin good. Hxh has been one of my favorite anime for years and hearing that makes me look at Netero’s power so differently.
    Because they mentioned the fact that when he had sensed that he had reached the limits of both his body and technique when he went into the mountains. Which is why spending years focusing on the emotions of gratitude for martial arts increased his power. And which also explains why he lost so much of his power as he got older. He contemplates when he stopped feeling grateful to his opponents. This loss of emotions for them explains why at the beginning of the arc when he was with Morel and Knov he said he was on the same level as them. It wasn’t until he met an opponent that helped him feel those emotions again did he regain the power he had lost.

    At 8:05 it looks like Netero is quite shocked at just losing a leg. Meruem tells him to close his wound but it *looks* like Netero is still a little too shocked to immediately take action against blood loss, so Meruem ask him "why are you not stopping the bleeding?" In reality Netero is feigning a state of surprise so he can intentionally lose some blood in order for his heart to stop beating faster once he needs to activate the miniature rose...Well Netero really was surprised, I think, but the inaction against his wound served as a sort of combative double entandre.
    The premise of this fight was interesting to me because Netero easily could've utilized Knov's portal ability to swap him out of the fight and immediately sub a nuke in. 10 nukes if he wanted. But as Netero stated he wanted to fight an opponent with the strength to defeat him. But not just fight him... I think if Netero ever found someone who could defeat him then he would forfeit his life. Maybe that's one of the conditions for his 100-type guanyin bodhisattva? Maybe another condition for it was to get the enemy to agree to the terms of the fight, the enemy must agree to defeat him without killing him? It's fun to speculate on that but anyways I think Netero is like Komugi in that regard. Their life is forfeit once they've been defeated.

    What I really really like about this, and how it changes the perception of all the previous episodes on rewatch - is that Netero won upon landing in the palace. That was it, he already had checkmate.
    The whole operation of separating the Guard from Meruem so they can get away was done to sacrifice as little as possible. If Netero were killed in the palace, he would've blown up everyone including all the hypnotized civilians in front of the palace.
    That, and his desire to fight Meruem and see if he can win as his life's final act.
    But it's just so insane to think about the fact it was literally over the moment Netero came *close* to Meruem.

    idk if they talk about this but netero loses the hand and leg that he wasnt using against gon and killua in the ball game. that was his bias that let the king win. netero always gave himself a handicap of those two limbs that it became the problem in a real fight.

    This fight and this moment is fantastic because it shows how meruem wasnt as major of a threat as we the audience thought. Netero actually says "you understand nothing of the infinite potential for human EVIL" showing how compared to how terrible we can be he was just a baby with childish plans. And the fact that this moment was shown to us through a shonen anime, leaving us with zero expectations for a nuclear bomb is what makes this one of the greatest anime fights and moments, it literally used the medium itself to trick us into a false sense of worry.

    This is the kind of thing that even animations or well choreography fight cant achieve. You can throw the best animations out there, or create the best well choreography fight. Its still wont beat the dialogue, metaphor, and feeling. Yes the animations in this episode is still amazing, but you know what i mean.. with the kind of seasonal animation these days.
    Its just only HxH can do that, ive seen JJK trying so hard to do something similar, even Bleach and Naruto have tried it in their early days. And they failed in my opinion. Glad that Bleach and Naruto find their own formula, while JJK.. i still dont think so.

    • @mb7626
      @mb7626 11 месяцев назад +1

      JJK’s human moments kinda always fail to land for me. But I’ve also realized that I find ‘pure’ battle shounen to be really boring tbh. Fights being a way of developing (or being secondary to) characters and their motives is always more gratifying but it must just be really challenging to do for how rare it is.

      I think the most incredible thing in JJk is the power system, fights are like hxh, bringing the brain to fights instead of random lasers an power ups

    • @mb7626
      @mb7626 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@Horneto12 I can see how JJK's power system would be a step up in that regard but I still find it pretty unsatisfying. I do have some particular/overly strong opinions on this topic though which definitely influence my judgement, so I'm not trying to speak for everyone or what everyone should inclined to appreciate in things like this, but it just strikes me as being pretty ad hoc and arbitrary (and thus pretty inelegant). Like people just sort of being able to do things (due to inheriting cursed techniques or whatever) and those things never really having to meaningfully engage with what other people can do, etc, gives it a sense of unreality for me not unlike the more 'artificial' feeling power system of something like MHA where people are just born with certain specific powers and limitations for more or less completely unspecified reasons. Which if a system is a common unifying field or logic that can being everything together, actually makes the whole thing feel decidedly 'unsystematic' to me.
      HxH definitely has an element of that where people can do these highly specific contextual things, but that's all built up from a common unifying logic of people discovering their basic temperament or dispositions, and deliberately or rationally constructing a power for themselves via working out acceptable conditions and limitations to make the most out of whatever they have and their own personal biases. It not only feels more 'realistic' by factoring in all of those possible considerations, it also can be used to do a ton of character work. Obviously HxH is sort of in its own category, though. But where something like JJK seems to divert from HxH all seem to be choices that are decidedly less inspired, to me.
      I want to reiterate that I have some unusually strong opinions on this topic, though. For the past few years I've been working on my own power system to address all of the things I find most power systems are lacking (an aforementioned sense of 'realism' vs it just enabling you to do 'cool things' [or how I'd see such a thing anyways, lol]), tying it into broader considerations like the metaphysics of the world or how people understand questions of reality, etc. So since I'm so motivated to make really specific decisions in my own personal project that must also be reflected in how (perhaps unnecessarily) critical I am in how other people might decide to do things lol...

      I still find shounen battle entertaining if it done right tbh, for me Bleach is too predictable with the way how the fight going, just like DB maybe. Honestly JJK and Kny too. Only Naruto, FMAB, HxH and Mob Psycho that can make a shounen battle entertaining. The stake is high, unpredictable, fluid and its not just power ups here and there.

    There is another sub version that people consider more accurate. Instead of "human's infinite potential for evolution" it says "human's infinite potential for malice" which makes more sense considering the poor man's rose explanation at the end 🌹

    • @Windmill360
      @Windmill360 11 месяцев назад +1

      It's not more accurate. There's a double meaning in the manga using kanji and furigana that can't be easily translated or conveyed in the anime. But in the anime, he literally says Shinka, which means evolution and, in my opinion, fits better with the idea of evolving to be at the top of the food chain conveyed throughout the arc. The nuclear weapons, of course, represent the malice driving that evolution to dominate not only other species but other human groups as well.

    I always loved how Netero "wins" this fight by basically appealing to his own, and humanity's, worst nature. You could make an argument that Netero accepted this mission for humanity's future, and I'm sure Netero thought about it. But during the fight Netero makes it clear that ultimately he's just doing it for his own satisfaction: he loves fighting and this will be the best fight of his life. And that same part of him that loves the idea of being challenged yet also, maybe paradoxically, absolutely hates to lose. So the nuclear bomb is a last spiteful "you didn't win" from the old devil.

Because humanity has no true king, instead a bunch of indivuduals that chase the position of king, humanity evolved through malice. The evil we inflict upon ourself, what if we influcted it upon an intruder, and enemy?
    In the end Meruem was the king of his species, but could not stack up to the sum total of humanity's archievements born out of our capacity for malice.
