- Today I wanted to show you around Portland. A city that in recent years has gotten some pretty bad press. However, just like in many other cities, the news articles about Portland have been greatly sensationalized and exaggerated. So, today I wanted to show you my favorite things to do in the city. We'll see the best places to shop, best bookstores, my favorite cafes and restaurants. Hope you enjoy!
you came to my city! i’ve been here forever and live literally right next to the saturday market! i’ve been all over but no place quite hits everything i want quite like portland. it’s such a lovely place
Haha glad to hear it! It’s definitely one of my favorite cities in the US!! Hope you enjoyed the video:)
If you want a "real" pizza, try D' Nicolas on Powell. 😋
@@gregoryhagen8801 Overrated pizza. Atlas Pizza and Amalfis are better.
I'm moving to Portland so I've watched many videos, but this is the best one I've seen. I love your enthusiasm and sincerity. Great vibe.
Thank you so much!! Glad you enjoyed the video! If you need any more recommendations for anything I’m happy to help!
I moved here from California a few months back and love it ❤
If you don't already have a place picked out, I suggest living in south waterfront if you want to be in the actual city. The low-average rent is 1500-2500, but there's also a few extremely expensive buildings. The cheapest places you can find will be the studio apartments/dorms around PSU. They're not exclusively for students, but there's no washer/dryer in the rooms.
If you've never lived in a city, then you should move to Beaverton, Tigard, or Hilsboro instead of Portland. They're suburbs west of Portland. Parking is obviously way easier in the suburbs.
SE portland around Foster Road is not exactly safe for people who aren't familiar with the area, it's safe enough if you have friends with you. That's where all the best food is, so it's a good place to visit. It's kinda weird because there are safe areas and unsafe areas and they are often literally right next to each other in a sort of patchwork across the city. Just be casually polite with homeless people, they're usually just normal people but with extra depression. If you meet a tweaker, just pretend they don't exist. The tweakers are almost never dangerous.
East (central) has a lot of conventional middle class houses and is safe enough for kids to be safe outside without an adult (in groups); it's expensive though.
Northeast portland is just nasty.
Northwest portland is complicated.
Downtown is the same way. For example, there's a sketchy area that starts just two or three blocks east of Borders. We've got homeless camps across the street from $100 per plate resturaunts. It's not quite a ghetto, but there's at least one tweaker and one homeless person on every block.
Important note:
Do NOT live in any building that was built prior to 1997, and preferably no older than 2011. I'm a restoration carpenter and I assure you that those cute old buildings are death traps. They are built with cancerous materials, the wood is simply too old, and the foundations of many of those old brick or masonry buildings have deteriorated to the point where they literally just explode into dust when you try to drill a hole into them. Most importantly, they are not earthquake safe. The earthquake will happen eventually, and you do not want to be in one of those death traps when it does come.
This video hits it spot on. Portland is great. The news over hypes the bad stuff.
I'm from NY and this city is still underrated in 2024
I’ve seen so many nyc visitors here in PDX that we joked it was another nyc burough 😂 welcome! Welcome!❤
Agreed! ❤️
I live in Vancouver WA but come to Portland downtown many times a week. I worked on 6th and couch a year .. frequent many shops and restaurants and have been a Lyft and door dash driver in downtown. I love the city. I go everywhere alone and rarely feel unsafe. Portland is so welcoming with much to offer.
Portlands definitely not the way a certain ex president made it sound like it is lol
not even close!
It's cool for tourists, living here kinda sucks tho
@@strature8103 speak for yourself, i love living here
Born and raised here, this place is a shtshow.
The best thing about Portland? I have NEVER seen a red maga hat here. That's probably one reason for the hate from that ilk. For a city that we've been told was "burned down", it's very much not. All cities have problems but I'll work to make it better.
I'm 70 and bought my first house here in 1984 after graduating from college in 1979. I travel all over the city alone by mass transit and never have issues. In fact tonight I'm going to a concert at Moda Center. The city is very much alive with something to do every weekend.
Portland is a city for people who enjoy life. I wouldn't live anywhere else in the US, which I'm sure makes many of 'those people' happy.
I agree. Still very much alive and lots to do! Happy to hear others agree! Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed!!
@TristanMartinn I did enjoy the positive view of our 'weird' city! ♥️ Thank you. The Hawthorne neighborhood is one of many walkable neighborhoods of that sort, all remnants of the streetcar systems that were removed in favor of automobiles in the 30s and 40s. It's too bad our famous 'Church of Elvis' closed over a decade ago. It was a few doors down from Voodoo Donuts.
ive lived here 11 years, you only have to drive out of the city 15-20 minutes in any direction and there is no shortage of maga hats. its a blue speck in a red river
@@jazzyjpg that's a little dramatic. the suburbs are less liberal than portland but still left leaning. You have to get out 40 minutes into the country and small towns before you get enough maga to feel outnumbered. and most cities along i5 between eugene and vancouver, bc are blue.
Born and raised here. While the MAGA people are less loud lately, I definitely would see a lot of trucks with Trump flags driving around 2020-2022. You definitely see more of them outside of Portland proper and as you head away from the city. In the outskirts of Oregon City I see a lot of trump signs.
When in Portland, don't miss the aerial tram, the Portlandia Statue, and the iconic St John's Bridge. I also like going to the OMSI, which is home to the USS Blueblack submarine and the jet boat river tours.
Great recommendations!! Thank you:)
About time someone does the something good for the city of roses. The city as a whole is really pretty tons of great food and great hiking and parks for the family. Yes we still have our issues but who doesn’t these days.
Important note for anyone living in or considering moving to the portland area:
Do not live in any building that was built prior to 1997, and preferably no older than 2011.
I'm a restoration carpenter and I assure you that those cute old buildings are death traps. They're built with cancerous materials, there's basically always going to be several layers of lead paint that have just been painted over with modern paint, the wood framing is simply too old to be trusted, and the foundations of many of those old brick or masonry buildings have deteriorated to the point where they literally just explode into dust when you try to drill a hole into them. Most importantly, they are not earthquake safe. The earthquake will happen eventually, and you do not want to be in one of those death traps when it does come.
I've worked on a dozen or so of these old buildings and I will often just tell the residents and clients that they should not be living in there. I get paid to make them look new, but they are not new, they are not safe, and you should not be fooled.
Oh no! I live in 101 year old home in Milwaukie. I have been renovating it myself for the last 25 years, while I worked on lots of new construction and all manner of reno’s and t.i.’s including the Meier and Frank bldg, and lots of PSU, Portland University, lots of the hotels and apartment buildings and of course the masonry buildings that are ubiquitous. Your assertion that newer structures are safer is not an opinion I share. My house has over 100 years of standing here, that’s a pretty good record. My guess it will still be here in 100 years from now while these osb pieces of crap have long since been demoed. Just my two cents. You can keep your new construction, because as far as I’m concerned they don’t make them like they used to.
@@patfinn2697 I'm not sure how to respond to someone who denies the fact that materials deteriorate over time
@@rampaginwalrus Your point about earthquakes is extremely valid when it comes to the older unreinforced masonry buildings, with the exception of ones that have been retrofit. It's especially important for people to know if they're planning on moving downtown.
Wow, wow, wow-I loved your presentation of our city! So many facts and I even learned some things I didn’t know. You’re lovely!
Thank you for posting a video that shows the good side of Portland. All I ever hear about this city is negativity. ty for sharing your visit.
Thanks for watching!! Glad you enjoyed:)
Rip City is a wild, wonderful, weird, sometimes semi-frustrating, fun place. I don't regret leaving ATL for here a decade ago. Been treated fairly, had gainful employment, nature is abundant, food is off the charts, music is great... It's truly an immaculate gemstone of a city!
I definitely agree! Thanks for watching!
Moved to Portland about six years ago. You've highlighted some of my favorite places! Covid hit the area hard, and we have our challenges, but I still love the city. It's not the cesspool that some like to say.
It’s definitely been different since the pandemic, but hopefully more things open up again soon! Thanks for watching!
I recommend Spella Caffe on Alder if you ever get a chance! Its right off of Pioneer Square in a closet sized storefront so small you could easily miss it but its worth finding ☕ The new Kilo D'Cofi is a must try too! Much love for & from Portland❤
I’ll give that a try next time!! Thanks for the recommendation:)
spella is an absolute staple in the coffee scene here
I wish my city was more like Portland in that it had more coffee shops and was more walkable. I'm depressed every time I leave my house.
Nashville sucks, man.
I thought Nashville was where everybody was moving to!
@@jakew1362 I cannot, for the life of me, understand why.
@@Linkbetweenus27 A lot of the MAGA guys that used to live here started moving to tennessee. I was really confused at first because I had never heard tennesse be relevant to any conversation in my life prior to like four years ago, then all of a sudden I started hearing about people moving out there over and over. Florida, too.
@@rampaginwalrus We've been getting a lot of those and luckily they settle in areas outside of Nashville. Nashville itself is still blue/liberal leaning, though not to the degree of Portland.
forest park always gives twilight vibes hehehe !!!! i loved this video!!!! it was so sweet seeing kendall in this one!!!
Period it does and I love that!!
Boxcar pizza is probably my favorite place I’ve been. But honestly so many delightfully delicious foods 😭❤️ Great video and great content, as always!
Assembly Brewing has the best Pizza in portland.
“Living room of the city” is soo accurate 🤣
Loved watching you explore my city! Even more awesome to see you are vegan.. will definitely need to visit some of these spots.
Thanks for watching!! Glad you enjoyed! Yeah box car and Jade rabbit are definitely worth the money! Both so good!
Portland is great, any danger is vastly exaggerated. There are some sketchy areas if it’s late night but in general it’s very safe. I have lived in Portland for 35 years and haven’t had any real issues with anyone.
The Farmers Market at PSU is amazing! We have our own in the neighborhood on Sundays. Several neighborhoods have great farmers markets.
TOMAS GUEST APPEARANCE! SLAY!
I used to live in Portland and it's so great to see such a positive video about it. Thank you!
One thing I love about this city is that people aren’t as judgy about if someone is actually from “Portland” like with somewhere like Chicago. The suburb neighborhoods are seen as just as valid, the beauty of Portland is the whole metro area. It’s also insanely expensive to live within Portland proper so most people I know live a 10 minute drive away from the boundary and pay $1000 less in rent.
Hmm. I live in Sellwood and, with all due respect, people take pride in being from the “real” city unlike LO and Beaverton.
@@granthuling3235 That sounds extremely elitist of you. I’m also from SE and while yes living in Beaverton is a different experience than over here it doesn’t make you better. I’d say you take more pride in growing up in Sellwood. There are people who grew up around downtown who wouldn’t consider Sellwood “city” because it’s neighborhoods on the east side. I used to live in Sellwood and one of the things I loved about there and downtown Milwaukie is they feel like a little town in a big city. Each sector of Portland proper is extremely different, it’s one of the things I love so much about here. While a lot of the outer cities of the metro area used to be more farmland and such, they are also turning into what you might consider “city life”.
@@Davinana44 It’s not even my take - it’s just what I’ve heard. There is a sense that people further out West have chosen to separate themselves from some of the issues more present in the city. I don’t disagree with any of your characterization of Sellwood - it’s obviously not central city.
Any city is going to have crime.
Portlands so special tho......
The fresh air...the greennery....the mountains....the waterfalls. The beach......u cant compete in my honest opinion...
Its also becoming more diverse depsite the riots....
There are alot of beautiful souls here ...
Im a big hippie and ive lived, On the streets,, all the way to waterfront..... And im still here....
The black population needs to be repopulated ,like yesterday tho.....
The racism from some, can make ur skin crawl ....
But the sunshine. , the rose gardens , and hoyt convince me ,rhere is nowhere better ❤....
News flash, the news over hypes things. Portland is great. Period.
yo ty for visiting my city. def conservative media will only show tarnishing stuff but that's not it at all- be sure to check out Multnomah falls and the gorge (the area where I currently live) very beautiful and would 💯recommend
It's been my home for almost five years and it's wonderful!
I lived in Portland my whole life but I’ve barely ever been to downtown. I’ve always loved everytime I went downtown but my parents always think its unsafe and “dirty”. I recently went to a flea market and I really loved it, definitely really cool but besides downtown, it’s pretty boring.
CANDLE GUEST APPEARANCE SLAY
my one tule about portland is never walk around it night, and try not to drive at night. don’t try to romanticize it though it’s still sketch as someone who grew up there

Love the haircut
Hahaha thank you 🫶
It’s a nice place with interesting people, good and bad like all cities
Awesome video! Moved here from Brooklyn NY in 1998 and I’m vegan and agree with everything you said.
Glad you enjoyed!! Thanks for watching :)
City of Roses, bro
Hi - I couldn’t catch the name of the coffee shop that own the farm in Colombia. What’s it called? 😀
Matta café! It’s in the pearl district maybe a 10-15 minute walk from pioneer square!
portland is so cute its insane what people saying about it. really the only sinister thing is chinatown. its so kitsch
Portland is lovely and people are nice. Every place has issues so I won’t comment on that. Come visit!
U missed powells warehouse sale❤❤❤❤❤❤
Two things can be true. Its both, a crime ridden coffee haven 😂😂😂😂
Blue Star is another great doughnut shop with a smaller line.
I do like Blue Star, but I think he should have shown Pip's.
my mans said the cheese was good
Btw Portland has more strip clubs than LA 👀🤣
A city where the cost of coffee is criminal
Best coffee in town is in ppls houses imo. The cost is a good conversation
It isn’t dangerous here, that story is so utterly ridiculous. I moved here from Baltimore and I am so happy I did.
Two people were fatally shot in downtown and SE Portland over the weekend. Portlanders need to be intellectually honest with themselves.
@@LloydNeal-r9q I lived in Baltimore. Even my 6’5 partner got mugged. I had to walk around with a giant over 100 lb Akita. I was the only person I knew that hadn’t got mugged. Here I can walk around. I can breath. I don’t need a beast to walk with to be safe. This one instance means what? If you think this is dangerous you must have lived an extremely privileged life.
Loveee
Voodoo donuts suck!
Tell me a similar donut place in a different state.
@@TrixBlowhard-jt3qv I don't live in a different state, so I don't know any.

hay want to try some happy cuppy coffee i hear its varry good coffee
Spokane sucks
miss Portland
Why go to Portland when you can go to Seattle?
better weather. more bikeable. no sales tax. less traffic. better food.
Small town vibes are here. Seattle intimidates me a little but I love those parties under the bridge
I’m a Portland Native. The Coffee here is hands down the best I’ve ever had!!
