There’s a word uttered in music forums. A genre recommended only to the deepest, most cynical music nerds. A proverbial last stop for those who’ve already explored the far reaches of popular music and need something new to brag about: Library music.
Library music gets its name from the record labels, or “libraries” who licensed background music for TV and film - particularly, during the 60s-80s. It literally is commercial music, and yet it was often far more innovative than its mainstream counterparts. Stranger yet is how this sound has been passed along over the decades, reappearing in hip-hop, ambient music, vaporwave and- yes, Mac DeMarco.
