      Very informative channel! I've been watching your videos. Quick question can I use a dogo argentino as a herding dog? I feel like the answers gonna be NO since its in their DNA to become a hunting dog. But with right socialization and training can that be achieve?

    man, you have no idea how much I love this channel, I have a 2.5yrs old intact male dogo, and I have tried everything in the book, tbh, the one thing I am learning while walking my dogs is to remain calm, I have broken some bones while on a run with him(elbowed my rib cage) and he went sideways chasing another alpha, and as I am lying down in pain at 5am in the morning, he came and sat on my face, so yeah I am now working with my own anxieties that I have developed with him only, I am a first time owner, and I have made all those mistakes that you said, but a dod is a journey specially in India where we have at least 7-8 street dogs every other block, I am still working , I am still in fear, but one thing I have realised is fear is not gonna take me far, avoiding trigger is not gonna help me or the dog, the more I expose him, the more I get up and run with him is what gonna help both of us, accident happen, lets not prolong it obviously, although there is one thing that I would request you to showcase is how can dogs parents help themselves mentally more than physically, while being on a dog walk to prevent triggers and to be less anxious too, I know you aint a shrink but whats ur head like say when you are walking with dogo and know shit can go south, how to have a happy nice walk/run, sorry for the long one mam, its all about the adventure with droggo !!

      I think there’s a lot to be said for exhaustive exercise socialization and obedience training. However the reality is this dog does have dog dog aggression in it’s heritage because the original creator chose dogs that showed courage. He chose them both because of his love of dogfighting but also because of his love of hunting. Dog to dog aggression is a problem in Dogo argentino‘s and they tend to challenge alphas when they perceive another to be there. Many people think that they can control a dog but the truth is no human can out pull a dog that can easily pull 1500 or more pounds and run 27 or more miles an hour. The only way is to control their mind and that comes through trust and repetition and training.

    Once again, great information on one of the greatest dogs on earth also my best friend. I got my Dogo at 8 weeks old he is now 3 years and one month today, he is now mature but it took all of that three years for him to evolve in maturity. I had him fully socialized at age 1 to 1 1/2 Lucky would get compliments every day on how beautiful he was people would walk across the whole park just to say hi and pet him he got along with just about everyone. But one day while during our regular 3 mile walk in the morning a young man with a Pitbull decided to let his leash all the way out (he had a pit on a retractable leash believe it or not) well when my Dogo saw that he immediately pulled me to the ground I'm over 200lbs and it was all I could do to hold him from back from getting into a fight. When the young man saw how my Dogo had the power to pull me down and the ferocity displayed by the Dogo he reeled his dog in picked him up and ran away. My Dogo has not been the same since he is on point at all times in the ready position. Lucky has had intermittent training since a puppy of 4 months with reputable trainers but that day did something to him to take a defensive posture as a normal behavior. That day we still had a 2 mile hike back to the truck I was bleeding from both elbows and knees he pulled me down and darn near drug me to get to that pit. I found out quickly how strong these dogs are and now that he is full grown he is a force not to be messed with. I am still working on calming him down but its kinda hard with people letting their dogs off leash I have to be so careful just like driving now a days you got to look out for everyone else. Thanks for your hard work on all the information you put out on these dogs I do appreciate it. Fantastic channel!!

      I appreciate how strong they are. I also appreciate that they are extremely able to take on other dogs which is why I try to empathize this isn’t a breed I recommend to first time dog owners. It’s hard to explain that the adult DA personality doesn’t emerge for 2-3 years because puppy-Dogo is a heck of a lot different than adult-Dogo. Also I am constantly amazed how dumb the general public is- a retractable leash!?? Are you crazy! Rookie move on the pitt owner’s part.

    My very personal experience. When my Dogo Argentino ( Morocho) came to my house he was 2 months and 1/2 and we had already a Bichon Frise (Popcorn) of 5 months (male both ). Popcorn accept Morocho since the first time they met, but Morocho had moments in wish was very “aggressive” toward Popcorn and in other moments were fine. Popcorn was not scared of him and try to be always be close to Morocho. Then when my Dogo had all of his vaccines he went to socialization classes together. After a few months working with his “aggressiveness” towards Popcorn they are the best friends ever. Now both are 6 years old and Morocho is always checking on Popcorn, is gentle with him, giving him kisses, protecting and respecting him. I trust Morocho with my eyes close. .

    Can you recommend a dog behaviorist in the Delaware or Eastern Shore MD area?
    I adopted an under-socialized 3 year old dogo the fall before lockdown. She was doing well, gaining confidence with minimal (but still some) reaction to strangers. Then lockdown, a surgery where she was taken into the vet hospital without me. She did not want to leave my side and struggled so they brought out the muzzle (no, I did not have the foresight to have her muzzle trained). She regressed in a big way. Vocally reactive to any stranger she saw. I switched vet hospitals for a new environment and have been taking her every 3 weeks. She is now happy to visit the vet and we were able to draw blood for heartworm testing last visit with only a few mild grumbles. This is after 6 months. I've been trying to think of other ways I could expand the socialization without scaring folks or upsetting businesses...she has such a powerful voice. Then I heard you mention that owners compound the problem when they isolate their dogo out of fear...geez, I'm just scared of disturbing other people.. I have to do right by my dog! On top of that, I can't believe I didn't think of a dog behaviorist!!! DOH! Soooo kicking myself in the butt right now. This teacher will be making up for lost time this summer...and on. Thank you for the much needed insight, I am sure Freya will be much happier for it.

    • @DogoArgentinoUSA
      @DogoArgentinoUSA  3 года назад

      I cannot recommend a behaviorist but it’s important to find one, certainly. It will be a long road and how much progress Freya makes is honestly up to her and to you. A dog who misses key behavioral experiences during the true socialization period of puppyhood may always display reactive tendencies but at least improvement is virtually guaranteed with time, patience and encouragement. I hope you will begin muzzle training and find someone good with guardian breeds to work with.

I was thinking about getting two males (puppies) but later I read that Dogos are aggressive toward other male dogs. Do you think I would have any problems getting a male and female (though I prefer two males). Also, would it be best to get a single Dogo and when fully socialized then get another Dogo?

      Nuwanda, It is normal for a Dogo, which is a protection dog at its heart, to be distrustful of strangers. The best solution is to meet the stranger outside your home first with positive rewards (treats, praise, toys) for positive interactions. Then move into the home once a rapport has been established. This is something you're going to have to work on if it's displaying adult protective responses at a very young age but it isn't unusual in this breed.

    What would you recommend to do if you want you’re DA to be socialized yet keep their protective nature? I had a fellow colleague who has 3 DA whom he socialized up until around 5 or 6 months with people and other animals to build confidence and whatnot and then after that limited/almost completely stopped the socializing because he wanted didn’t want to take away their protective nature as adults ... overall I’m asking would you recommend that as well? in order to build confidence without compromising that nature. I also want mine to be protective as I work graveyard and don’t want them to be overly friendly with strangers but I want to socialize them enough for them to be confident without seeing everything as a threat.

    • @DogoArgentinoUSA

      I do not believe a DA will lack protectiveness by continuing socialization. They’re very smart. I believe in socializing for life; protectiveness in ingrained out of love for you and genetic predisposition.

    How do you go about handling prey drive on the dogo cause unlike other dogs with high prey drive these dogs have a considerably higher bite force. Also do you think there is a correlation between prey drive and defense drive?

    • @DogoArgentinoUSA
      @DogoArgentinoUSA  4 года назад +2

      I do not think there is a correlation between high prey drive and defense drive, personally. Based on their exceptional bite force and prey drive I tackle it this way: 1. Obedience drills and I hike them daily because a tired DA (mentally and physically) is a good DA. Consistency in this area alone solves a lot of problems. If you don’t do the above, even for one day, they are antsy, more defensive and they ask pretty much nonstop to go to the woods. If you on the other hand make it routine the DAs relax knowing their needs will be met. 2. Since being attacked by Offleash dogs I no longer walk them in my neighborhood because the physical area it happened at the end of my block is remembered so I stuff them in the car and we go to one of the remote areas in rotation which doesn’t have other dogs 3. I’ve become significantly more vigilant and I rarely go alone because I want my dogs to be able to be Offleash which means I cannot go where people or animals are - hence I boondook a lot. I’m actually building a boondocking vehicle just for us. In this way I simply manage the problem. Our play dates involve friends with non-genetically related DAs who don’t mind the hard play.

      @@DogoArgentinoUSA thanks for the reply. But what should I understand by "puppy party"? I've learned what you shouldn't do with the puppy and the kids during play. But at the same time, the kids should play with the puppy in order to develop the puppy's playful side so it will keep playing even after it matured. However, I can't understand what kind of games they can play. The kids being kids are usually all over the place and they want to run (that could develop pray-drive in the puppy), give hugs (the dogs mainly don't like to be hugged at the neck because it is instinctively a sign of fighting position). I am not sure what kind of games can be allowed with the kids and the dog. I would really appreciate your thoughts on that.

    Hi I have a female Dogo and she is almost 2 years old. We got her when she was 3 months old and we know that her owner before us abused her. But she only showed aggressive behaviour to her old owner and not anybody else. She was playful and social it was never a problem to meet her with other dogs or humans. But a year ago she was attacked by a pitbull on the playground thankfully it was just a bite on the arm she got a couple stiches and everything was fine. We were concerned that it would effect her behaviour but it didnt then a month later she got attacted by a stray dog again her wounds were not bad because we were there to stop it. After these events she got her first period and things started to change. Now she is 2 years old. She only plays with her old friends from when she was a pup ( a couple stray dogs) but she had to move to another city with her father and now she has no friends at all because she is way too agressive we even had 2 events where she bit other 2 dogs her father and i are very concerned about this. She doesnt like to be around kids now and not okay with strangers and other dogs as well. We are trying to socialize her but its hard because there is no one to socialize with. We were thinking about getting another male dog. Probably not a dogo but maybe some other easier friendlier breed like america staff. Maybe if she has a friend that grew up beside her that it would be easier for us to socialize her? She is normally( to the dogs and people she knows ) so cute and loving and playful. I know that she is an angel but because of the events that occured she probably reacts this way to protect herself . Can you give me some advice on this. Her father is really great with her she listens to every word that comes out of his mouth but would it be okay to get another dog for her i mean what should we do?

We did pay a pretty penny for him but he had a bad skin condition and looked slight malnourished. He was six months old. We took him to the vet and came to find out he had battled parvo, something that was not disclosed to us when we got him. He also had mange. We were able to take care of his mange and get his skin problems mostly cleared up (he still has some skin allergies that we try to take care of through his diet and an occasional Benadryl if it gets too bad). • @DogoArgentinoUSA
      @DogoArgentinoUSA  4 года назад

      Technically socialization only occurs between 3 weeks and 3 months. Anything after that is technically not socialization though we basically still use the term.
      An example of true socialization would be changing the floor textures a pup must walk over, for example to reach water, after it leaves the whelping box. The purpose is to teach “this is different but who cares” response. An example of later (not true) socialization would be taking a pup to puppy play class to the local dog club. Separating a dog fight is probably not something that I wish to teach because it is unbelievably dangerous to do.

    When I was a student, I was several times in a situation where my dog (Doberman) was attacked by another dog. I must admit that I did not quite manage to disassemble, ie. it had to be faster and better. As my children love to walk the dog, I would like advice, first, how to avoid a potential fight, and then how to save the dog, ie how to disassemble them. To tell the truth, our dog (bitch BRT) is not aggressive and there is no risk to it. However, there are other, aggressive dogs, and she is certainly not a dog that can defend herself, especially since she is 11 years old.

    • @DogoArgentinoUSA
      @DogoArgentinoUSA  4 года назад

      Avoiding a dog fight is about managing the space between you and assailants(for example avoiding walking up on a strange dog). As for defense I recommend citronella spray which is distasteful yet nontoxic. You could also use pepper spray but you’ll likely get some in your own face through drift so there’s that. I would look up some videos on the topic as I am not an expert at stopping dog fights.
