    You know I was realy expecting that last one to end in a mass effect reference. One of the idle chatters you can run accross is a sargent instructing his gunnery crew about what happens if you miss with a rail gun in space. Sir Isaac Newton is the deadliest SOB in the universe.

    "The shot was fired from half way across the galaxy." How can you tell? At 1.5 BILLION years old, the leviathan's corpse (and pretty much every other star in the galaxy) would have completed many MANY galactic orbits by then. For example, Sol completes one galactic orbit every 230 million Earth years, and will complete 6.5 such orbits in a 1.5 billion year time frame.
    A much more logical explanation would be that the shots were fired from ships from much closer up.

      You know the end , you can find the beginning . All you have to do is follow it back.
      There can be only one position , that will produce this exact trajectory. Galactic revolutions can be taken into account , if relevant, i don't think so. The shot was intra galactic, not exo galactic.

    • @geoshark12
      @geoshark12 Год назад +1

      Thats not including the fact that at that range we wouldn’t see what it actually looks like at the time of firing due to the speed of light cap

      @@peterwalls-qf7ii I think there is also a possibility that the Leviathan was heading towards Human space, and it's destruction and the formation of the 'warp node' caused it's corpse to remain fixed in place while the planets or moons it was approaching continued on their slow migration. The story suggests that other warp nodes (within solar systems) might remain with them.

      Indeed, with precious few exceptions, most soldiers are taught to stay alive in battlefield conditions. Not survive raw nature. They expect to have at least some equipment and supply at their disposal, at least intermittently. And more time is spent on teaching them not to destroy the forrests they are in than to survive in them. And most other survival training is to survive long enough for retrieval (for downed pilots) or to survive and evade capture until retrieval.

      Depends on the military and specialization. My country has a special 'mountain hunter' unit that's trained to survive with virtually no equipment in the wilderness, at high altitude. Part of their training requires them to survive for a week alone in the mountains, with temperatures potentially dipping below -20, with no human contact and their rations mainly consist of... a sort of mix between jerky and fat.
      If I'm not mistaken, when dropped off they are told of a shack that serves as both shelter and their pickup point, but it's kilometers away from the start and the thing was built half a century ago; no modern amenities exist there - hence they must forage for firewood and food themselves or get by with what rations they were able to carry from the start of the test.
      That said, this was during the 90s, so perhaps the test has changed somewhat (maybe they renovated that old shack), but I doubt it.
