Yeah, when I saw the thumbnail, that was the kind of story I was expecting. Aliens attack otter people, they call out into space asking for help. Humans take one look at those cute faces and decide to kick the crap out of the bad Aliens.
There was a previous story of Humans meeting Space Otters, and Space Crabs came to attack the Otters. Humans were incensed, did not go well for the Crabs.
Other races: "Yeah, we've had that happen to us, as did the Humans. They managed to work it out and recover everything, and the crew got home safely, but we all have been there. They stumbled on us during our own, well, not Boris' people, they tried and almost managed it. Shit luck and one last thing going wrong at the worst possible time, there. Didn't stop them from continuing, though. They now knew what the Humans have known for centuries." "If it can go wrong, it will, and at the worst possible time. You need to be ready for that and be prepared to improvise. Won't always work, but it's better than doing nothing."
I'm sorry but that just makes the humans in this story assholes. Seriously, the absolute childishness here is very off-putting, it reeks of "it's just a prank bro" energy.

Space Otters have human style names. The human's crewmates and their species names sound like humanized Earth animals. Why do I get the feeling that this setting is one full of uplifted Earth animals and the Otters are just late getting into space compared to the bears, snakes, and spiders.
It's possible the racial names he gave were just the human equivalent; like how English says "Germany", but German says "Deutschland". As for Franz's name... convergant evolution?
If memory serves, it was mentioned in another story by the same author that, while the species all look similar to Earth animals, none of them are remotely related. Through some currently unknown quirk of evolution, they all just happen to look the same.
One of my yet to be published fictions has a whole lot of uplifted animals, it started with an unethical research corporation's attempts to make bioweapons, and everytime they had to change their lab's location to avoid being caught, they would dump their mutagens in the local river, meaning that the children of animals who drank from it would gain human like self awareness and the lifespan of a human, usually along with opposable thumbs and the ability to eat whatever humans could(imagine a python eating a watermelon, or a monitor lizard eating a slice of pizza.). The corporations first generation of animal bioweapons(things like a cuttlefish who could shoot unstable explosive ink, like the exploding gum from "mission impossible" as well as regular ink), also had human-like intelligence, and were smart enough to not have a reason to fight. Being the jerks that they were, the corporation deemed them "failed experiments" and locked them into a room and left to them to starve, thankfully they were rescued by the main heroes of the story and became, well, "pets" is too strong a word, but they live with them. Anyway, even though the entire corporation was dismantled and the survivors of the heroes raid on it's main lab arrested. The animals themselves were treated just fine, after all, it wasn't their fault they were mutated. Now the usual policy of humanity and its allies when it comes to uplifted animals is to give them the rights of children by default, and if they want to be treated as adults(and endure all the trouble that comes with adulthood) they can apply to see if they can(and if they fail to qualify, they can try again every 6 months). You'd be surprised how many uplifted animals choose to stay legally children for their entire lives. Notable uplifted animals besides the hero's companions include: an owl who may not have been wise from the beginning, but he is deliberately trying to live up to the "wise owl" mythos, however, rather than being a sage, he's trying to be an engineer, and he's succeeding, if this were the 60s he'd probably have a place in apollo mission control, maybe as EECOM or Flight Dynamics Officer(FIDO). The owl's best friend, a crow who is smart enough to help the owl and to understand what he's talking about, yet is far, FAR more mischievous, whenever the crow isn't helping the owl or playing video games, he's plotting his next college prank, and he often takes advantage of the owl's scientific knowledge to be even more creative with his pranks. So does that sound cool? if you want to hear about the hero's 5 companions, go ahead and respond to this comment.

I LOVE THESE STORIES !!! This story is priceless, would really like to see in live action. Otters in Space. Octopi next? Eagles?
Well the nature of predators has evil squids?
I wonder if this is the “For all things cute and furry” story.
[Edit] Agro read the story I was thinking of (Cute & Cuddly) a couple of years ago in TFOS1094.
nah it was the other way round in that one, humans were the newcomers to the galactic stage
