He’s actually my second cousin (my moms cousin) I never knew him but I know his dad my great uncle doug. Very cool seeing the full story from his view I’ve also met frosty before very cool man he even showed us his surfboards!
I watched his movie..story...with my children...and now my grandson...HE LOVED IT..im 66 years old now...and my grandson is 7..hel be 8 in feb 2020..RIP.. JAY..YOU WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED AND LIVE IN MANY. HEARTS...💖💖
I remember when monster mavericks came out in 93- ish .. Jeff Clark Doc Flea Mike Parsons and the boiled up toad burger dude ! RIP mark Foo TC & Jay boy
notice there isn't 15 rescue ski's in the background and no inflating vests, this was epic just surfers taking it to the limit knowing there isn't going to be a rescue.
That’s really interesting he’s my second cousin (my moms cousin) and I know his dad my great uncle doug it’s very cool seeing everyone that even had a slight connection with him. I met frosty and he showed me all of his surfboards very cool man. I wonder why they wouldn’t let boats go but the would let surfers?
That's how we train though. Drop your spear a little deeper each time. Relax .. Hold your breath and dive down to retrieve it. We just drop it a few feet deeper each time. When I got to 55+ feet out at molokini ( the boat had depth finders) I felt like I could duck dive anything after that
Nothing simple about free diving. Like for real. Proximity wing suit, free climbing and free diving are all the triangle of most dangerous extreme sports. Simply free diving? Insane comment.
I’m with you all. Simply free diving. I don’t think so. LIVE LIKE JAY. I’m from Santa Cruz loved to surf. I say loved because there are 50 kooks at every break from Sunset to 4 mile. Don’t surf anymore as much. 80s early 90s last epic surf decades.
He wasn’t just “simply free diving” though. He had left the group and was free diving alone, in a remote area which you should never do. He died by doing something very senseless.
Yeah diving under water is so quiet,I have super crisp hearing and there's a lot of distraction above the water and under water is that quiet piece especially if its windy out soon as u go below water your mind is like ah piece and quiet nice....no distortion or buzzing feed back of noises that are just in the back ground.
Whats crazy is he didn't die from surfing he died free diving blacked out was found on the bottom sitting on sand with his watch going off. Sad but ocean is dangerous man I feel the future of free diving should be having a mini oxygen 10-20 hitter around ur neck or sumthing jst incase u get to distracted by the beauty of the reefs and fish life and lighting in clear waters and stay down too long by accident you can catch a but of oxygen from the hand held portable mini oxygen container so u can make It to the surface not rushed and black out as a back up incase u do stay down too long by accident cuz if you've ever dived on the reefs, wow man I don't blame him for staying down too long its like another planet and unreal. But ya man
Wouldn't work to have o2 at depth, theres a lot of math and stuff involved. But you can't go down holding your breath, breath and come back up without there being many compilcations. It was one of the first things they said in my scuba certification is don't hold your breath. You can even get decomp sickness in the 12 ft practice pool. It's one or the other not both.
Yeah that was the key in the movie, when he does get thru the big wipe, and the seen where he at the back of the boat and doc,may be reached out his hand time to call it a day,and jay say no Gimmie my board,in getting misty laughing at dude on the boat man wants his board okay he says...that the start of the movie.I was learning how to skate a 14 foot 20foot wide half pipe and was 12,and gots some help from a 42 pro and in the old days on plywood sliding 15 feet down the pipe the burns would eat all my equipment in three falls I learn to not miss my airs and the landings,a couple times my pro pants went rite thru to my skin in half a slide, good motivation for progression....see ya.oh yeah this indoor pipe was about 70 feet long 85degrees of vert a nice wave dimensions 14 foot high very fast I think we drop we were going close to thirty right at 40 mph for an indoor facility pretty awsum forc1977.THANKS
He’s also my second cousin (my moms cousin) never knew him but I know his dad ( my great uncle doug) I also met frosty and he showed me all of his surfboards. Very cool seeing it from everyone’s perspective
Thank you for this he’s my second cousin (my moms cousin) and I knew his dad my great uncle doug. Very sad hearing it from his perspective he lived a good life. Rest In Peace…
+Ieuan Chasing Maverick ended with a quick bio on Jay Moriarity's life.. it simply read.. Jay Moriarty drowned.. not Jay Moriarity died from a blackout..hahha..Live like Jay!
ha half that movie is fake. its a great movie dont get me wrong but for 1 his dad is the one who taught him to surf. frosty trained him for mavericks but his dad is actually the one who taught him to surf. so dad didnt bail on him and his mom like the movie said he did. but still a great movie
Advocating “Live Like Jay” is pretty lame considering he’s dead...because of the risks he took. Dwell on that perhaps, preferably when not under the influence.
Just watched the movie. It was awesome. RIP Jay. Legend.
People get traumized for life when they have a wipe out like this and Jay just took one breath to ride the second wave💪 live like jay
When u look at jay's face it just makes u smile😁❤RIP Legend!
I just watched Chasing Mavericks for the nth time today. And still curious about his whole story til now. Still here watching from year 2020.

Read “making Mavericks” by Frosty Hesson. It’s the best book I’ve ever read

Heart of a lion. Spirit of none other! You inspire me so much continue sleeping in perfect peace Jay 🥺!
Thats Jeff Clark. The guy who surfed Mavericks alone for almost 15 yrs then helped introduce it to the world.
Saw some of the movie... I'd rather remember the great times we had rescue training with Jay and da Nor-Cal Boyz in 2000.
I was in that Class with you Mike!!! Good times with the Bros from the Westside...Waianae!!!
😎 still remembering in 2021

History. I was there that day. Harbor closed to all boats. Too hazardous.

The most shocking thing is that Jay survived that massive wave wipeout and then died simply freediving
RIP AND LIVE LIKE JAY!!

kinda got up through the break a little. mighta saved his ass
Yea in the Indian Ocean.

LOL, you didn't watch the end. He was free diving (by himself) when he drowned. The day b/4 his birthday
Such a shame.
Because SSSKimba knew Jay personally.
He’s also my second cousin (my moms cousin) never knew him but I know his dad ( my great uncle doug) I also met frosty and he showed me all of his surfboards. Very cool seeing it from everyone’s perspective
Too much offshore wind catching those boards on the take-off.
The spray that hits your face feels like rocks .. Lol "freight trains" Maui be like that sometimes
Why he died ?? 😔 LIVE LIKE JAY !
Rest in Paradise ! ❤️
He drowned at the Maldives.
Sam Varani I think he means "why did he have to". Not "how did he".
Aaron Marcus My bad!! Thanks for the heads up! Now that you said, the question makes a lot of sense!!
Thank you for this he’s my second cousin (my moms cousin) and I knew his dad my great uncle doug. Very sad hearing it from his perspective he lived a good life. Rest In Peace…
Can't believe he drowned
+Ieuan Cole He didnt drown he had a shallow water blackout or SWB, kills dozens of divers every year.
+TheBroLounge ah ok thanks for correcting me
+TheBroLounge he still drowned homie.. The blackout does not kill you.. The lack of oxygen from being under water does

was it 6-7 yrs??
this was a long time ago before he died
What's he doing..... He's came to surf mavericks
He died free diving. He didn't intentionally drown himself
huh. dont get it. he didnt die on that wipeout ?
did he died?
he drowned in maldives
he was free diving alone
so sad =(
Yes , in 2001
wow the movie is so wrong

*This* was Sherlock Holmes' arch-nemesis??? Good grief.
🏄🏄🏄🏄🏄
No, how can he die because of that wipeout, and make an Interview of that wipeout !?
He died free diving , not surfing
Advocating “Live Like Jay” is pretty lame considering he’s dead...because of the risks he took. Dwell on that perhaps, preferably when not under the influence.
But he died doing what he loved. He truly lived in the time he was here. Maybe think about that!
