Blake Kirby it can be pretty easy as long as it doesn't get too hot. I usually plant in a pot that I can move into the shade or in a location that is part shade.
I like to fill a five gallon bucket with potable water a day ahead of time to let the halides off gas like chlorine and flourine. This becomes nursery plant and aquarium water. Very nice video!

Thank you, I didn't know that cilantro doesn't like hot weather. No wonder mine hasn't grown in a couple of weeks. It's been high 90s in SFl and it's getting about 4-5 hours of direct morning sun. 8a-1p Seems to be the same height. Sorry for the typos, don't know how to edit from my iPhone.

I am in Tucson, Az so needless to say i use A LOT of cilantro. Just planted some seedings at the beginning of the week and after having to pay $.99 for a tiny bunch at the grocery store yesterday, I am kicking myself for not growing it sooner! Thank you for the video showing all of the stages, I like seeing what to expect! thru the process! I have been just really getting into gardening now that I am not working full time and am home enough to take care of a garden and I am LOVIN' all of your videos!!!
+shelly patterson Its exciting to have more time to do what you love! How does the cilantro grow there in the AZ heat? I can never grow it in the summer here, it bolts so quickly. Looking forward to cooler weather so I can grow some again! I just bought a 99cent bunch today! Let me know how yours does there!
We had it growing in our small garden this past spring but it bolted and flowered after just a few small harvests also. I didn't know what those words even meant a few short months ago! :) But now that I have your videos, I am trying again in a pot outside for fall and I just did a small pot for the window today after watching your video. I will keep you posted on how it's going and thank you for sharing all of your knowledge and experience!!

Kim, thank you for the video. I am trying to follow your method to build a grow light system to start seedling. My question is should I place the seed planted soil directly under grow light from day of planting? How far should I keep the light from soil? How long should I keep the light on? How often should I water and how should I check humidity? Thanks again..
I just planted some in a pot and its my first time growing them. I tell ya, it will save me a lot of money. I usually pay $3.50 for a small packet of fresh ones.

William Wheeler That is a great tip that I have never heard before! Thx so much for sharing and I am definitely going to do this the next time I plant cilantro!
Thanks for your videos...I was searching for some gardening tips online, and came across your videos. You make excellent informative videos. I joined your channel probably after watching couple of videos. Thanks for your posts!
Thanks for the clarification. However in India, we call the plant coriander and the seeds coriander seeds. And I think you'll be interested to know that the seeds are ground into a fine powder (coriander powder) which is added to many Indian curries and other dishes too! Thanks again. Cheers. This comes from Melbourne, Australia where I now live. William.
Love your videos Kim! Here in RI we have to wait another 3-4 months before we can plant outside. Hope to visit California one day and experience the great weather!
Brad1237202 There's nothing like CA in the winter. I grew up with the winters in Colorado and now I'm a CA girl for good! Don't have any desire to live in a winter climate again! Hope your planting season comes early this year!
As always thanks for the tips! Ok so my cilantro plant is thriving, I let it flower and now I have coriander seeds! Only problem is that no matter how many blogs I read or videos...I cant find out WHEN to harvest the coriander so I would greatly appreciate any information LOL Thanks again CaliKim29!
+Kailee Garner I hear you - I bet it is a challenge to live in a cold climate when you love growing outdoors! Have seen any of my First Winter Gardening Series videos? They are all about growing during the cooler months, and there are some tips for indoor growing too. Here is a link if you are interested: ruclips.net/p/PLH4z_9MDD00Iqd-H91aPD6fFgssO6mPym. Are you trying anything indoors during the cold months? Thanks so much for watching, Kailee!
Thanks for sharing the right growing conditions for cilantro .. exactly what I came looking for for my newly germinated cilantro. I have a follow-up question though. I live in the San Jose Bay area and am wondering if I should leave the container outdoors (in part-shade) or move it indoors to protect it from the winter.
Nice video, and great minds think alike ;) I just planted some cilantro in two separate containers as I love this herb, one of my favorites. Mine are doing very well under grow lights and seem to do ok in a north facing window here in Montana. I've put together two raised beds in our basement with one more to go. Won't be long and Spring will be here. Wayne
Guess I should have clarified my comment, I built the raised beds in my basement but they will be going outside as soon as the snow melts. ;) Now, that's assuming the beds will fit through the outside door--I'll be like he guy who built a yacht in the basement and then has to remove the roof to get at it. Wayne
sfchemist ha,ha! gotcha! I thot that was pretty different - but hey if that's what works for you then great! Now I understand - hope they fit through your door and you get to put them outside soon!
***** Go for it, Wayne! The cilantro I planted in this video is just starting to come up. I picked some tonight from the plants I already have growing to put in fresh guacamole. I love having the fresh herbs at my fingertips for cooking! Let me know how it goes!
Great idea on poking holes on the bottle cap! I always let water sit out for a couple of days prior to watering my crops. Love growing cilantro. I grow them under the shade to prolong their life. They've always flowered so quickly when the sun hits. Love young cilantro, they are just the best thing to garnish, especially on Chinese food! :D
Wendi Phan glad you liked the tip - it is convenient to have a water bottle sitting by wherever my seedlings are so I can water them real quickly. Yes, here in CA, to get it to grow in the summer, I have to grow it in the shade,or grow in a pot that can be moved when the heat hits. When they do go to seed, however, the seed is so easy to collect!
Went and bought fresh cilantro plant and the weather has been hot so I put the pot outside and it seems not to like it but when I bring back indoors it grows super fast but with long stems and tiny ridged leaves instead of the full ones it had when I bought it.Is it getting ready to seed out or something?
I live in southern Florida and have a raised bed garden in our community gardens I am still a beginner gardener and tried planting cilantro seeds I would say my bed gets full sun all day I guess that may be why I had no luck planting them. I didn't get any to come up. I was wondering what amount of light or growing conditions would be best for me to grow cilantro considering where I live? Thanks and I love your videos!😊
Hi Kim...your video was quite helpful and encouraged me to go ahead with harvesting fresh cilantro for myself...so as shown I sowed the seeds and within a week or two they germinated...but after these saplings became about an inch and a half tall, they have started to wilt and die....I have put the pot on my window grill and it get partial sun and partial shade throughout the day...what can be the problem then?
Thanks for recycling pots for planting. The soil may have eggs of critters like centipedes and they hatch abd grow in home. DId this happen often? It happened once to me.
Another Video from an Indian Fellow says that the Celentro Seeds must first be split in half to grow right, What is your take on this method etc Thanks for sharing etc.
Hi again, Thank you for all the info! Your videos are so helpful! I've transplanted my cilantro and parsley seedlings into big pots. I've put them on the patio for a few hours for hardening and hope to keep them outdoors all day by next week. I'm worried that I didn't transplant the seedlings deep enough. Im not comfortable adding more soil at this point as I've also added seeds to each pot, that are germinating right now. What do you suggest? Also, my chard doesn't look too good. I've thine out and translated. Looks long, thin and weak. Thank you! Mia
Hi i am growing cilantro in a long pot. I accidentally ripped roots off while trying to put other cilantro pods around it. The roots were thin and white. Does this mean that, that pod of cilantro will not grow back. Thanks :)
I'm growing my cilantro indoors since I live in florida and the weather is usually scorching, my cilantro is nice and green but the stems aren't holding up the leaves well?? should I just harvest or is there something im missing?
Will the cilantro grow bigger if I plant in a deeper pot? Thanks for making this I use cilantro daily in my heavy metal detox smoothie so I'm wanting to save on money and grow myself. Will it grow back if I cut it?
Hey there! I have bought the cilantro plants from Publix several times and have failed every single time I've had them in my kitchen. I do one harvest and then it's down hill from there. I water it's and some times open the window for a few hours and it still dies? Please help
I just started a balcony herb garden- have some cilantro, along with other herbs growing in pots. Just wondering if you've got a video on harvesting seeds? Does cilantro grow well from seeds you harvest? I'm just getting into winter here in Australia, not sure when my cilantro will flower, but thought I'd start thinking ahead!
Hello Uma, I bet your balcony herb garden is so beautiful! I do have a video on dill and lettuce seed saving, check it out: How to Get Free Seeds by Saving Your Own-Romaine Lettuce & Dill. I have grown cilantro from seeds I harvest, it grows much better in the winter here. Summertime it gets too hot and bolts. Always good to think ahead! Thx for watching!
I do not have a garden or a balcony; just a window. Can I keep growing cliantro indoors keeping the pot at the window; Window would be receiving enough sunlight in summers.
Thank you so much for these videos they are informative and simple at the same time. I was wondering if you have a video about growing dill. I tried to grow it but it didn't work.
this video was very helpful I love cilantro but am unable to find it in the grocery store where I live. I have some seeds and will definitely try it. Just need to get some soil :)
ahh I've sowed them indoors on the window sill in rows in trays , 15 x 4 about 3cm apart ( both length and width ) Idea was to pick them out ( not by roots ) and plant them after they're a few cm's high, into a larger box/pots I realize this is not best as supposed to sow them in the same pot as is intended to harvest. I see from the videos its best to sprinkle them into intended pots or outside from the get go .. What can I do?
I recently started planting some seeds I bought two packages of cilantro seeds and two of basil, planted the seeds on a medium size pot but I sprinkled both packages on the pots. One for basil and one for cilantro. Three days passed and even though I knew that my seeds probably had not started germinating, I felt a little worried because I think i planted them to deep. So I went and picked on the pot with a little wood stick and started looking for the seeds :(. Now I am even more worried that maybe they wont grow. Your advice would be greatly appreciated
+shangitomarango Hello - way to go starting some basil and cilantro seeds! You'll love the taste of your own fresh herbs! A few tips - basil loves the heat and cilantro is a cool weather herb. What is the weather like where you live right now? If the weather is warm, put your basil in a sunny location outside, and your cilantro in a location where it gets morning sun, but afternoon shade. If it is warm, basil will germinate fairly quickly - 3-7 days. Cilantro can take up to 2 weeks to germinate, so be patient - if the weather conditions are right, it will come up! Watch my $10 Garden series for some tips on starting seeds indoors: ruclips.net/p/PLH4z_9MDD00Lion_2NWKsyvPWLezSQ4-v. Basil is super easy to start indoors and then move outside when weather gets warmer. Cilantro likes to be sowed where it is to grow. Hope this helps, let me know how your herbs do! Thanks for watching!
What if I permanently grow it inside during the summer? House is kept at 73 degrees. Regardless, I am looking to grow through the winter in my outside garden for the first time. Learning a lot Kim. Thanks.
hi, that was a very helpful tutorial. i have grown mine. small leaves have come up with the seed on the tip of the leaves. they are already 2-3 inches long but not growing after that. please help. i stay in switzerland and growing the herb indoor. what shall i do now?
Srija Basu are they getting enough sunlight indoors and are you feedling them? I use a 1/2 strength fish emulsion for mine or steep banana peels in water for a few days and water with that. Good luck!
I know that carrots and cilantro like cool weather... if I’m growing them from seeds with a grow light, how long to I keep the light on. Should I turn it off at night when the house is cool? And with plants that like warm weather, same question, should I keep the light on at night?
Thanks for the video. I bought a very small pot of cilantro today, but I am wondering if my house will be too cold during the winter? I'm trying to be energy-efficient, so I leave the heat off in my house during the day. It gets as cold as 30 degrees inside my house. What should I do? I will at least be trying to keep the cilantro in a sunny place not pressed up right against a window...Is that enough? Thanks!
what is the right temperature to have it outside ? I living in DK and the temperature here is 0 at night and never above 15 at the high point of a day. I have some shop bought cilantro that I want to revive (it did not survive the transplanting well) it has mostly died however one leaf seems like it is surviving and I have no idea how to help the plant recover- all advice most welcome
greeng3lfling it does like it cool- up to 75F is optimal. I would just start with a new batch, following the tips on the video! Or to hurry up the process buy a few plant starts to get them going. Good luck and keep me posted
Hi CalKim...Thanks for all your time and effort! My wife and I are beginners in gardening and learn much from what you share! We are located in the Santa Clarita Valley here in Ca. and wonder what location or zone you are in, so as we can follow your lead if you are around here. I think we are zone 9. I don't know if this post is proper for youtube we are new to signing up here too!
dekader val Hi and thanks so much for stopping by to view my videos and welcome to You Tube as well. There are so many wonderful gardeners I have met here and learned so much from! I also am in zone 9. So glad you are gardening - there is much that can be grown year round in So Cal. Its been such a warm winter - cool weather crops can be a challenge right now. The spot I have my cilantro outdoors just gets about 4 hours of morning sun a day and that seems to be doing the job! Are you growing anything right now?
CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY We are now starting Broccoli, bush beans, cucumbers, water melons, tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, summer squash, sage, and basil. All started last Saturday from the peat pot tray on top of the fridge! I'm questioning wether the broccoli will make it by the time we plant them from the seedlings because of the temp. We found out more specifically we are in zone 9b. We will be sure to always follow your great advice, as your garden seems to thrive...we love to watch!!! Thanks so much!!!
dekader val you have a great variety started so far! The hot weather has made it challenging to grow cool weather crops this winter. My backyard faces north and is mostly shaded in the winter, so this helps. Glad you are finding the videos helpful! Good luck with your garden!
Great video! You have a good one on how to prune basil and one to propagate basil...any chance you could do the same with cilantro? You mention that you can harvest the seeds to grow new plants. I was always under the impression that if I let them flower and grow (into coriandor) that my "cilantro" plant was gone...so your information on this would be great! thanks!
lanhing I would be happy to as soon as I have some cilantro going to seed. Right now it is growing well in the cool weather, come spring and summer it will begin to bolt and I will have some seeds to film! Have a wonderful holiday!
Manav Sharma It usually takes few weeks for them to sprout! Depending on where you live. They like the cool weather,so they grow better for me in the winter.
+Shanthi Ramakrishnan They are tricky to germinate, Shanthi. Usually takes a week or two, and if it is too hot, they won't germinate. They like weather between 50- 80 degrees I've actually heard that you can break them open, or roll them with a rolling pin to speed germination, but I've never tried it. Let me know if you try it how it goes! Thx for watching!
Emily BH I water them when they feel dry when I stick my finger in the soil. I do not cover them to germinate. The peas are quick to grow and germinate, the cilantro takes a little more time. Thx for watching!
William Wheeler Coriander refers to the seed of the same herb that is used as a spice for cooking, cilantro is the leaf. I believe there may be some varieties that are just grown specifically for the seed, I have only grown cilantro for the leaf, then once it goes to seed, I harvest and replant the seeds for more cilantro. I hope this makes sense, William!
Great question, DaoMH. I haven't had the cilantro reseed itself in my garden, it usually goes to seed because it gets too hot. I just harvest the seeds and plant them again when the weather is cooler. Thanks for watching!
I have been trying to find videos that would show me how to properly take the stems off or trim them. I have been reading articles, some say to cut the whole bunch two inches from the base and then another person is saying to cut everything but the center stem and then some say to pinch, not cut the stems or flowers. Which is it. I bought a pre planed cilantro pot from the store, it is full and ready to cut or pinch or whatever. There isn't one video I can find that SHOWS me how to do this. It's very frustrating. I don't want to ruin this plant. I love cilantro and I want to keep it growing in my kitchen. Can you make a video which shows me how. I learn better by watching how it's done than following steps. Thanks so much. It needs to be trimmed or pinched today. They are very tall and ready but I do not want to do it without knowing what to do. Thanks.
Hi. New to gardening. Bought a cilantro plant st the grocery store, came in a 3" by 3" black square thin walled pot. A tight shaped plastic wrap kept it standing straight up Removed it from pot, placed in 8" ceramic pot with organic potting soil. First observation was that the stalks, about a foot tall, were laying over instead of standing firm. Is this poor herb done for? I went ahead and cut most of the long stalks and pit them in a jar of water in frig with plastic bag over top. I am attempting a windowsill grow, and I am wondering if I should expect the cut stems, which are about two inches tall now, to regrow, or have I already done everything wrong? Thank you!
bizzarrogeorge Hello George - first of all, welcome to the gardening world - you will be hooked as soon as you taste your first veggie from your garden! Your did the right thing by planting it in a larger pot, however, it takes a few days for it to get over "transplant" shock and stand up like it should. If the cut stems that you are referring to are still in the soil, (and not the ones in the water) you may get some new growth. Give it some time, it may perk up. It does not like the heat, though, so it may not grow well in the summer. Mine does great in the cooler months, but does nothing but go to seed (this is where it flowers and produces a ton of seeds once the flowers dry) in the summer. Hope this helps and good luck!
hi Kim, I know cilantro comes from the coriander seed. Do you know if cilantro could be grown from what it is sold as the cooking spice? Thanks, pierre
pierreb03038 do you mean the coriander seeds that you can buy at the store? Not sure - I've never tried it - would be an interesting experiment! Let me know if you try it how it works!
Kimberly Vaillancourt I've never used lobster shells, but there may be some good videos out there on YT, let me know what you find out! Thx for watching, Kimberly!
Yum, *Fresh Cilantro*. Growing it looks easy enough.
Blake Kirby it can be pretty easy as long as it doesn't get too hot. I usually plant in a pot that I can move into the shade or in a location that is part shade.

Split coriander seeds with a rolling pin. This is because each seed will produce two plants. Secondly, the seeds germinate much faster.
William Wheeler That is a great tip that I have never heard before! Thx so much for sharing and I am definitely going to do this the next time I plant cilantro!
When do I water it?
@@CaliKim29 I just posted this Tip above etc.
This is how I grow mine. Always works and they germinate much quicker
Great show. Very informative. Thank you and God bless you and yours
For faster germination, I cover my seed pots with a clear, plastic bag or saran wrap.
As soon the plant is 6" tall, I start harvesting cilantro! 😄
Great short informative video!!! I love the water bottle with holes in it. I need to get more innovative lol.
Thanks for sharing! I love gardening and its freezing here so I'm trying to beat the struggle! :) Thanks
Thanks so much for watching, Kailee!
yay I want to plant cilantro too
Thanks for sharing the right growing conditions for cilantro .. exactly what I came looking for for my newly germinated cilantro. I have a follow-up question though. I live in the San Jose Bay area and am wondering if I should leave the container outdoors (in part-shade) or move it indoors to protect it from the winter.
I LOVE CILANTRO in my salsas! just love it but its sooo hard to get in the torturing Chicago Winter season!!!!
Wayne
sfchemist wow, raised beds in your basement! Very impressive, Wayne! You will have a great jump on spring! Good luck with your cilantro!
Guess I should have clarified my comment, I built the raised beds in my basement but they will be going outside as soon as the snow melts. ;) Now, that's assuming the beds will fit through the outside door--I'll be like he guy who built a yacht in the basement and then has to remove the roof to get at it.
Wayne
sfchemist
ha,ha! gotcha! I thot that was pretty different - but hey if that's what works for you then great! Now I understand - hope they fit through your door and you get to put them outside soon!
I've never grown Cilantro CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY, but this video sure made me want to give it a go! I think I may just try it... :-)
GIve your dog a hug for me! :D So cute!
Wendi Phan
I will do so, Wendi! He loves hugs, Wendi, we swear he hugs back and winks.
Is there holes in the bottom of that container? Do I need to have a pot with holes for drainage?
Yes, always!
Went and bought fresh cilantro plant and the weather has been hot so I put the pot outside and it seems not to like it but when I bring back indoors it grows super fast but with long stems and tiny ridged leaves instead of the full ones it had when I bought it.Is it getting ready to seed out or something?
Thanks Kim, always informative and inspirational!
Heather Jackson hi I also live in Florida. Have you fun a tip or trick cilantro?
Great video. I'm going to give this a shot.
I've been trying to grow it from seed and it just won't come up. Even after weeks of waiting. What am I doing wrong?
Another Video from an Indian Fellow says that the Celentro Seeds must first be split in half to grow right, What is your take on this method etc Thanks for sharing etc.
How do you prevent bolting? I am growing mine under a grow light.
Thanks for the info. Nice personality, too. 👍❤️
Thanks for the videos. I would have liked to see how you harvest it as well.
Thank-you 💚💚💚
No problem 😊
Hi again,
Thank you for all the info!
Thank you!
Mia
thanks for sharing! how often do you water ur pot of cilrantro?
very helpful for detoxification as well! Removes lead from our bodies too!
Fabulous point! Thank you! Kim
Hi i am growing cilantro in a long pot. I accidentally ripped roots off while trying to put other cilantro pods around it. The roots were thin and white. Does this mean that, that pod of cilantro will not grow back. Thanks :)
I'm growing my cilantro indoors since I live in florida and the weather is usually scorching, my cilantro is nice and green but the stems aren't holding up the leaves well?? should I just harvest or is there something im missing?
thank you I just love Cilantro
Will the cilantro grow bigger if I plant in a deeper pot? Thanks for making this I use cilantro daily in my heavy metal detox smoothie so I'm wanting to save on money and grow myself. Will it grow back if I cut it?
I live in north California .When I should bring inside my small tropical plants I winter so they don’t die and how long should I keep inside .
I have a 4 inch pot with cilantro germinated. When do I need to transplant it or do I need to?
this video was very helpful I love cilantro but am unable to find it in the grocery store where I live. I have some seeds and will definitely try it. Just need to get some soil :)
ahh I've sowed them indoors on the window sill in rows in trays , 15 x 4 about 3cm apart ( both length and width )
Idea was to pick them out ( not by roots ) and plant them after they're a few cm's high, into a larger box/pots
I realize this is not best as supposed to sow them in the same pot as is intended to harvest.
I see from the videos its best to sprinkle them into intended pots or outside from the get go ..
What can I do?
Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge....great videos!!
Do you have dill mixed in with the cilantro?
Will they grow in 3inch deep soil?
What other composts can coriander tolerate? :)
you can gently crush the seeds to split them open and they'll germinate faster.
I'm a first time Gardner just wondering what is the best potting soil?
You said that they take a little Tyme, I thought you were planting Celantro.? Just kidding had to get that in
Thanks for the video.
Thanks!
This is so helpful - thx. starting soon!
what is the right temperature to have it outside ? I living in DK and the temperature here is 0 at night and never above 15 at the high point of a day. I have some shop bought cilantro that I want to revive (it did not survive the transplanting well) it has mostly died however one leaf seems like it is surviving and I have no idea how to help the plant recover- all advice most welcome
greeng3lfling it does like it cool- up to 75F is optimal. I would just start with a new batch, following the tips on the video! Or to hurry up the process buy a few plant starts to get them going. Good luck and keep me posted
can i plant it in a circle pot too?
I wonder if presoaking the seeds helps them germinate.
Great video Kim! I have planted my coriander seeds about a week ago and I don't see any thing sprouting! When will they start sprouting?
Manav Sharma It usually takes few weeks for them to sprout! Depending on where you live. They like the cool weather,so they grow better for me in the winter.
Hi. Do i have to break open the seeds before planting? i am unable to get my cilantro seeds to germinate.
How much and how often do you water them? Does it help to cover them with plastic to keep the moisture in while they germinate?
Emily BH I water them when they feel dry when I stick my finger in the soil. I do not cover them to germinate. The peas are quick to grow and germinate, the cilantro takes a little more time. Thx for watching!
Question,? Do you ever use any of that Compressed Coco, As Potting Soil that Iv'e been hearing so much about how good it is for seed starting etc.
can you propagate cilantro like you did basil?
Thanks Miss Kim
Tom Weber you are welcome, hope you found it helpful!
Please tell e what is the difference between Cilantro and Coriander. Or are they just different names for the same herb?
Thanks. William
After harvesting, do the coriander plants regrow the leaves indefinitely ? Or we'll have to regrow them with new seeds? Thanks...
Thanks.
Wonderful video. Definitely want to give it a try. One question, How often do you water the cilantro?
CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY Thank you. I hope that I can resurrect this. Appreciat your advice!
I'm in southern california in the LA area. Would you happen to know where I can go to find some cilantro seeds?
hi Kim, I know cilantro comes from the coriander seed. Do you know if cilantro could be grown from what it is sold as the cooking spice? Thanks, pierre
pierreb03038 do you mean the coriander seeds that you can buy at the store? Not sure - I've never tried it - would be an interesting experiment! Let me know if you try it how it works!
yes, this is what i meant. I will try it when spring comes to NH :)
WONDERFUL VIDEO!!!!
Yep cilantro grows in COOL weather NOT hot or cold .
Live on an island in Maine...can lobster shells provide nutrients for germinating herbs and vegetables?
Kimberly Vaillancourt I've never used lobster shells, but there may be some good videos out there on YT, let me know what you find out! Thx for watching, Kimberly!
I don't have a garden outside and want to grow Cilantro indoors all year round.....is this possible?
