Void Wispon: Slower fire rate than i'd like, and that Shadow the Hedgehog chaos control ability is useless since you can only use it at a few specific points in the game. Hover Wispon: A shotgun powered by air. Awesome! Also the closest thing you'll get to a playable Tails in this game. Drill Wispon: Spam L in the air to win the game. Asteroid Wispon: Hover Wispon, except garbage.
Cube wispon was definitely the worst designed. It’s ability to give you rings would be useful for life farming if lives weren’t removed, and rings weren’t so disgustingly abundant for no reason whatsoever. That said, I actually dislike Burst wispon the most for two reasons. It kills hoards of enemies the slowest out of all wispons, while providing no additional utility outside of ease of use. Hell, even Cube has moments where it can shine i.e. when you’re surrounded, and gives you invincibility in the air. Cube Decimates the infinite boss in Metropolis.
My favorites (not in a specific order): Asteroid (especially with bosses) Cube (depending on the levels example: Imperial Tower and Capital City) Void and Burst (depending on the level too example: Spaceport and Null Space) Every Wispon has its moment to shine in the game anyway

Well, the IDW comics can help you with three of them. Rocket is kind of self-explanatory, Spikes launches spiky balls that can essentially be held in place as a chainsaw (think Wheel Cutter from Mega Man 10, but it actually has momentum when released), and Laser fires laser beams that can be directed with the crystals. Null, which we see in a cutscene, probably functions in a similar vein to the Mega Buster.
I read something that said the Void Wispon is useless in boss battles, but that’s totally not true! It’s the BEST weapon when fighting Metal Sonic and the final battle with Infinite, because it can get rid of all that annoying stuff that gets in the way of hitting those two bosses quickly. The Hover Wispon is useful for this too, but the Void Wispon is superior because it is guaranteed to get EVERYTHING with its suction. The air blast released by the Hover Wispon sometimes misses one or two items. Yes, it misses the boss itself, but that’s not the point. The point is to get rid of all that random stuff so you can homing attack the boss. Trying to complete the time challenge for that final fight with Infinite is a major pain without it.
Also I wonder if the drill ability in Kirby and the Forgotten Land got inspired from this. They are both yellow drills and they can both get charged to launch the character forward (although Sonic does is in a faster way and they have similar graphical effects too) and, while the drill Wispon doesn't go underground the Wisp itself can do that in Sonic Colors and Lost World...
a will of the wisp is known for its illusions that lead people into danger. make a weapon based on such a concept and you seem to have a star trek phaser. except they change the setting mid fire so that you dont notice the difference between stun and disintegrate because its the same beam of energy at different wavelengths striking you.
