I don't really don't get this burnt paper look? Where did it come from? I can see aging paper by painting it with coffee and crinkling the pages, doing things like this reproduce the effect great lengths of time really have on paper. I could even go on a stretch and say that a treasure map or single scroll having one or two burnt spots could work from people trying to read it in the dark with candles. What I don't get is people burning multiple edges of the paper on all four sides, especially when they do that with every page of an entire book...when in real life have you ever seen an ancient manuscript look like that? What are the chances that a piece of paper could catch on fire say 12 different times and be put out each time? Is it for simulating some other effect of aging that I'm missing?

I'm sorry but this is not a good lesson on how to do this. First, I hate when it takes almost a full minute before the person even starts with the steps. Second, if this is supposed to be done over a sink then do it over the sink. Third, the grill lighter is making way too big a flame and getting soot all over the paper, and the example with burned edges has like huge chunks of paper burned away instead of the slightly browned scalloped look of parchment. Time to find another lesson.
+Rachel E. That makes much more sense and is less likely to soot up the whole paper. I've also heard of people holding the edge of the wet paper in a candle flame which is nowhere near as big as that grill lighter.

with some grill lighters you actually can make the flame tinier.
Just do not burn it with the yellow part of the flame, burn it with the blue part

The best way to do this is to roll the lit end of a cigarette along the edges of the paper. And its much safer.

The whole entire paper erupted into flames, and my hand almost caught on fire. I am preparing a bigger bowl of water next time
