    Here's an easy bookbinding tutorial! There's a lot of reasons why I wanted to make a watercolor sketchbook
    1. There aren't great watercolor sketchbooks out on the market right now that have artist grade 100% cotton paper. Pentallic used to make a great watercolor sketchbook but they discontinued making them (**EDIT: Amazon has the Pentallic sketchbook now! I bought it and it's pretty good!) . Arches has a good sketchbook but it's pretty pricey for the amount of paper inside.
    2. I could customize what size I wanted
    3. I could choose my favorite watercolor paper!
    4. Watercolor paper is trickier to bind because of how heavy-duty it is. So I thought I'd share a method to an easy way to securely bind paper together.
    ▲I used scrap regular kraft paper for the cover. You can use more ornamental paper for the cover but I personally care more about functionality than appearance
    ▲If you want to see a no-sew method to making a watercolor sketchbook, comment below!

    I am confused by all the negative comments like "Why not just BUY a sketchbook?" You are watching a video about a sketchbook which is used for making art yet you can't see the creativity, beauty, and satisfaction of making your own sketchbook?

    Additional tip: use some other paper, like cardstock, specialty paper, or others, for the first and last flaps of your journal. In this video, you see that the first and last are the ones that get adhered to the book covers. So if you don't want to waste your watercolor paper (especially if you're making a custom one with some more expensive watercolor paper), just add additional pages for your flyleaf and inside cover.

    • @yanwong9780
      @yanwong9780 8 лет назад +44

      Ahhhhhhh I was thinking the same. I was cringing a little at the waste of watercolour paper, especially since it's Arches and Arches watercolour paper is so expensive. ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

      she used scarp cardboard and put brown paper on it to make individual covers for each side. I get what it looked like but this is misinformation.

    • @venomoussoliloquydraws6450
      @venomoussoliloquydraws6450 7 лет назад +54

      That's not what Mmina was saying. She is saying that when the cardboard + brown paper combo for the covers was applied to the actual bound pages, it was literally adhered/glued to the watercolor paper itself. She's not saying that the covers are made of the watercolor paper.

    This was absolutely great. I read through some of the comments, and I can tell that some folks don't get it because they aren't watercolorists. Having the high-quality paper you want in the size that you need in a sturdy sketchbook is so important. I've spent big bucks on sketchbooks that say they are for watercolor but that don't hold up to the water. And, as you said, if you do find one that does hold up, it's very expensive.I was given one with a beautiful leather cover, handmade, sewn like yours. The paper had a note inside saying it was Cold Press 140 lb. handmade watercolor paper. I think the thing cost about $75 for a 5"X8" size paper. When I tried to use it, the coating on the pages repelled the water--never had that happen before! I thought, oh, well, I'll use it for a writing journal. Guess what--pen slides off, too. Markers never seem to dry, and smear hideously. A regular 2B pencil makes incised marks but leaves very little graphite on the page. The only things that seem to work well are very soft pencils and crayons. However, the book looks nice on my shelf. I'll eventually glue small watercolors into the book; that is, IF the glue doesn't do something wacky on the surface. :)

    For anyone that feels like it's a lot of work to make a watercolor sketchbook (or any kind of sketchbook), I suggest starting off small with a staple-bound or saddle-stitch notebook/sketchbook before working up to other kinds of bookbinding.
    Also for anyone that feels they're too "lazy" or somehow can't bookbind, then it's probably best to self-asses where that headspace/perspective comes from (such as whether or not it's from putting a lot of mental energy and time somewhere else, or if it's just a subject/hobby that isn't your cup of tea compared to other kinds of hobbies). A lot of creative stuff like this can just be for learning about yourself and what skills you want to aquire! 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓

    All these comments are kinda wack. It's a nice video and a great idea for anyone who wants a sketchbook journal using their own favorite paper. I've used moleskin WC journals. The paper used doesn't hold up if you use any water at all. There are classes offered for journal making so I certainly appreciate the free video. If this is not something you appreciate and you have so little patience, why would you waste your time commenting. Skip to your next activity that requires a limited attention span. Thanks for the video. It was recommended on PureWatercolour.

Seriously, how many people do you know that say "no, I've made this entire sketchbook. Yes, even the book itself" it's pretty satisfying =u= anyhow, it took me about 5 hours in the span of two days. And that's how much I can spend doing a painting, so to me, it's alright.

    I had some fun making this sketchbook this morning, i know a lot of people have suggested its a waste of time but the pad of watercolor paper i used was my favorite watercolor paper and was on sale plus i have a moleskin and its not nearly as good, their grade of watercolor paper doesn't hold the water as well as artist grade paper and watercolor markers and liners show through the pages. Therefore making your own little cute personal sketchbook with paper you already know and trust is a way better idea.

      +Liemariko if you use book binding thread [which is the best option] or just a think enough string, then no, you don't have to be gentle

    • @PearFleur
      @PearFleur  8 лет назад +62

      +Liemariko Sorry for the late reply! I've used the sketchbook for about half a year now and It's been through some rough treatment, but the binding has held up well! (if you see my latest sketchbook tour, you'll see that nothing really changed except the cover got really dirty haha). I have another watercolor sketchbook where I basically just folded the papers in half and then glued the spine together, which is a really really quick way to make a sketchbook, and the binding is beginning to fall apart after a few pages of using it. I don't think you have to be gentle with this technique!

      If you do a goggle search for "bookbinder's thread, you'll find sites that sell linen bookbinder's thread, both waxed and unwaxed, and in various weights and colors. This type of thread is archival, and tailor made for things such as binding your own watercolor journal, as well as for making the text block for rebinding those crappy Moleskine watercolor journals.

      Moleskine has a pretty limited selection of paper and formats, so they're not any good imho.
      Stillman & Brin is the only company that makes decent sketchbooks for water based media, but is only available in the US.
      There are many reasons why someone would want a custom made sketchbook.

    • @Sakuems
      @Sakuems 8 лет назад +4

      +Pihlaja Pihlava Moleskine is the brand and they are making watercolor notebooks with actual 200gsm² watercolor paper and i used it, it's pretty good

      @nanamilucia123 8 лет назад +62

      +Sakuems Why is everyone going wacko over the Moleskin sketchbooks lol they're one of my least favorites. Having a custom sketchbook makes it not only personalized, but it makes it a lot more comfortable to use. As an artist, I don't want a sketchbook that feels too precious to use or doesn't have the right feel to it/too "stiff" in my hands. There's so many more pros to having a custom/hand-bound sketchbook.

    • @ninjatops99
      @ninjatops99 8 лет назад +20

      moleskins arent even that good. the company is cheap and fooling people into believing they make good quality b/c theyre using a diff metric unit to weigh the paper. its only equivalent to 120lb paper which doesnt even make watercolorist "average"low standard of 140lb cold press paper. and plus who knows who makes their watercolor paper and where they purchase it from but 120lb i can tell you it ain't arches which is the name brand for watercolors and good quality.

    • @Sakuems
      @Sakuems 8 лет назад +2

      +nanamilucia123 Again, Moleskine is a BRAND. they made watercolor sketchbooks and i have one and it's very good.

    i dont have much experience with watercolor, but i thought you had to stretch the paper before painting on it, wouldn't the paper warp if you try to just use it directly? I've just started using watercolors sorry haha

    • @PearFleur

      It helps if you stretch it but i never do haha!

    • @ShamraRifai
      @ShamraRifai 9 лет назад +5

      +Catherine Zalewski It helps if you stretch, but if you use a heavier watercolour paper like 300 gsm, it won't matter cause it straightens out after the paint dries :D

    • @tatumreyna5062

      +Catherine Zalewski It'll help but sometimes the sketch lines are too dark.

    • @beacreates4370
      @beacreates4370 8 лет назад +5

      For me that has never worked. The paper will warp because you are using water on paper. The best technique I have found is after the painting is done lay a crap tone of heavy books on top of it.

    • @Olivia-mz3bv
      @Olivia-mz3bv 7 лет назад

      I don't usually do watercolor stuff in books, I tear out the paper; but taping the paper down also helps to prevent a lot of warping.

    I'm totally stoked to find this video, exactly what I want to do. All affordable watercolour or 240+gsm sketch pads these days seem to be bloody top flip or in double rings. Trying to find a hard cover bound spine WC journal in Australia is impossible unless you want to pay $60-$100 for a A5 20pg book, which is just BS.
    Excellent work my friend 👍.
