He bombed at the dinner but that wasn't his fault but the stiffs and shrubs in the audience
Exactly.
He didn’t bomb. The mic was just tuned out to cancel the ambient noise so the audience laughter was softened but you can still hear it if you bring your phone or computer near you. The reaction after the Mitch McConnell bit was still audible enough, however.
