WHEN CELEBRITIES WEAR METAL SHIRTS...

- Is it ok when celebrities wear metal band shirts? For example Kendall Jenner in a Slayer shirt, Justin Bieber in an Iron Maiden shirt, Kanye West wearing a Cradle Of Filth shirt, and all the other examples of celebrities wearing metal shirts. What about Gary Holt of Exodus' "Kill A Kardashian" shirt?

People get mad because these people wearing these shirts will probably mock you and bully you for being a metalhead. These same people would call you gross for liking metal.
I just can't wait till I see someone wearing Finn's neon cartoon monster shirt. So I can ask them to name 3 of his worst music opinions, like any true fan can.
Haha. His dismissal of Deftones because of a couple of fans, his frustrating opinion of ska, and his weird love of stripper fight music.
1. A7X and Disturbed are Butt Rock. 2. Cowboys from Hell isn't Pantera's best album. 3. Claiming 311 is one of his most-listened-to bands, but no videos on them (not really an opinion)
Ha!
@Madden 07 Soundtrack Fan Account [Norma Jean AOTY] tbh it kinda is
1. Modern metalcore bands try to replicate Doomsday by Architects with Linkin Park choruses.
2. System Of A Down and Red Hot Chili Peppers are talented bands with terrible vocalists.
3. Can't think of a third one because they were already mentioned...
Amen to all of this. As a 39 year old metal head from Indiana, I absolutely love it when I see people wearing metal shirts!!! The ironic part of all of it is that some people will start listening to the music out of genuine curiosity. It’s an absolute win for the culture and we can get a new demographic of fans.
Well I was a big Metallica fan as a kid and didn’t expand my horizons very much. I started listening to underground metal when I asked a buddy about his shirt. Haven’t hardly listened to Metallica since. So you are spot on!!
I'm a 39 year old female metal head from Kentucky and I could care less. I own a kill the Kardashians shirt tho
"bro theres no way Justin Bieber has ever heard Iron Maiden, they're wayyy too underground"
It’s still funny that people don’t realize musicians typically have a wide varied taste in music. Anyone who knows any serious rappers/hip hop producer in person knows they listen to everything.
It’s only rational since they are creatives. They probably should have open mind to other stuff.
Exactly
Exactly. And Kanye sampled esoteric rock stuff like King Crimson and Can, I'm sure he's familiar with metal lol
My sister on the outside seems like a spoiled princess, and I'll tell you it was pretty satisfying to watch her name the entirety of Nirvana's Bleach and In Utero to a guy who was harassing her about her shirt. Never judge a book by its cover
Fun fact: Three Six Mafia (Juicy J and DJ Paul) have sampled all the old metal bands in their beats (i.e. sampling Metallica for Koopsta Knicca's Torture chamber off the devil's playground album, check it out) and have said that metal and hardcore drastically effected the sound of Memphis hardcore.
Juicy j has a linkin park sample in like his first mainstream album
As someone who grew up listening to the Triple 6 and metal, I feel ashamed for not noticing this lol
A lot of trap music was the same Phrygian tonalities found in most metal soundscapes
Weird that finn didn't catch that as big a fan as he is of that suicideboys sound which is basically ripped directly from threesix
@@BlueBeetle1939 Not really. The more you watch his videos you realize his scope is pretty shallow and narrow.
I honestly think Halsey liking Slipknot is 100% believable. She's been pretty open about her rock influences (mostly 2000s emo/pop punk)
And it’s not uncommon for people that aren’t that into metal to like Slipknot. I know multiple people that aren’t “metalheads” but still like Slipknot
I’ve seen a live video of Killswitch Engage (at the start of the Howard era) where Howard says to Adam D about giving a lady her hat back in the audience… that audience member happened to be Venus Williams. Celebs liking Metal is entirely believable. If you’re in the music industry then it takes a real professional to at least appreciate most of if not all forms of music, including metal.
Non-metalhead: *wears Metallica shirt*
Metalheads: “THIS IS CULTURAL APPROPRIATION AND I’M OFFENDED”
My culture is not your costume 😤
but you have a point in some way. A lot of snowflakes are offended, when somebody is wearing something that doesn´t belong to his/hers culture or something. But when you asked them ,,do you listen to them?´´ they will rip you off with ,,This is a free country and I can wear whatever I want´´ so, i´m more confused than angry. :D
Interestingly enough, even though I am not a Bieber fan at all, he actually likes metal music. He is a fan of Ozzy and GNR and he says "Fade To Black" and "One" are his "jams".
Gary Holt has explained the Kill the Kardashians thing before and I get where he's coming from
If a shirt upsets you, life is going good.
My oldest daughter went to see misfits. She couldn’t name a single misfits song but went to their show.Someone from a generation after me goes to see a band for a generation before me. That is good.
It will only be acceptable if they wear Finn's " LISTEN TO NU-METAL" shirt 😎
It’s annoying when I approach someone and they don’t know anything about them, cuz I genuinely love meeting metal heads and chatting. But I can’t fault people for buying the shirts cuz metal art is some of the best ever!! And they inadvertently make random people listen to them and find a new love!
I feel the same way, if I was in a band and the biggest celebrities were wearing my merch I would be freaking out I’d be so happy
When your band becomes a fashion brand, thats when you really "made" it.
@@petrinafilip96 agreed idc what anyone says if my band shirt is selling at target or Walmart im not gonna be mad at all 🤣🤣

This became a big ass trend after the brand Fear of God released true vintage shirts with their logo stamped on it (the designer Jerry Lorenzo, a metal and rock fan, designed Justin Bieber's purpose tour merch). After that came Demna while he was in Vetements and Kanye putting out cool stuff too in the yeezus era
Oh I didn’t know he did the Bieber merch! That stuff was so good
The vetements death metal hoodie was huge
Here’s my unwanted unneeded opinion. I wore metal shirts my whole life it’s how I expressed my self and how I was able to stop being shy a security blanket or my armor.
I was bullied and ridiculed for my shirts and now they are popular and fashionable? I’m in the camp of let people wear whatever but it just kinda gets on my nerves.
Same got called every name under the sun for wearing a battle jacket but somehow the same people who made fun of me and the bands I listened to don't want to be judge or called out when they wear the exact same thing
Anything that gets elitists mad is cool by me 😂
I think a lot of metal and punk kids react this way because of the way society used to reject them. Of course thats subjective to whatever era you grew up in. Im 26 now so saying that out loud is pretty cringe. I could care less who wants to wear whatever band shirt, but as a kid being outcasted or clowned for wearing a shirt or listening to a certain genre and now having it be considered trendy and cool by the same kids who rejected you feels like a slap in the face. I accept any counter culture I'm into like skating or hardcore to be accepted into mainstream society now a days but id be lying if i said it didn't piss me off to see some normie douche wearing a thrasher shirt or band shirt when i was a teenager- early 20s.
I remember when the only way to get a Thrasher Shirt was to order it from their Magazine which is still going strong.
Honestly I felt this way a few years ago. but then I got the fuck over it, and everyone should too. This behavior is way too crazy (especially when you argue with other metalheads and they come off as whiny babies)
@@actnatural9261 Bingo!
i remember one of your sywh blogs talking about how posers actually support the scene more than the intense gatekeeper types. this was back when i would pirate an entire bands discography and then MAYBE buy a shirt from them, where posers would buy a bands entire merch catalog and vinyl just to take pics for tumblr or whatever
I look at it as outsiders appreciating and admiring our culture. If they dont like the music, they obviously think we look cool or else they wouldnt be rocking our look lol.
Black to Grey is in - the design of these black t shirts are just very fashionable and artistic. I think metal t shirts are just the best designed in any genre.
Aesthetic is where metal shines. Most of the music _really_ sucks, is borderline noise and unlistenable to most people.
Uhhh, hate to break it to you but….metal heads and punks do not look cool.

I remember this one time. I was working at a wally world (walmart) and this kid and his mom came to my register and the kid had a misfits shirt and i try to talk to the kid and i asked him “hey little dude, you like the misfits?” And he said “whats that” and i was sooo let down. This experience sums up my view on the issue.
Same experience and outcome for me. I worked a coffeeshop and a rich popular girl came in with a doors shirt. I just strike up a conversation and say what kind of doors songs do you like? And she said oh I like their hits (without naming one specific song) I was disappointed.
Wouldn't be surprised if his parents picked it out because they're misfits fans themselves and want their friends to think they're putting their kid onto good music. I see it alot.

I’m not a huge Cradle of Filth fan but I think they can be a great extreme metal entry point, so if one Kanye fan saw that and listened and became a fan then party on, Wayne
@RepugWrecker I said entry point, not entry level. As in they have a very classic hook-y style and a pretty charismatic frontman in Dani which I think both combine to make them a bit more alluring to newcomers. You know, pull them in with Nymphetamine Fix and shred their face with some Funeral in Carpathia which is a pretty great start to getting into black metal. I don’t hate Cradle by a long shot bro 🤘
@RepugWrecker Can’t speak to Lorna Shore as metal/deathcore just has never done anything for me but I know they’re buzzing right and they’re metal so I have no complaints. Proceed with partying, Wayne
These people getting mad about this are probably also wearing Vans without being able to do an ollie
I think it comes from resentment. Most metalheads are picked on during high school so to see the same people that pointed at the for their likes enjoing that same thing they feel like it's unfair. Its dumb but its gets under the skin of many
This applys to people meatalheads feel represent that people (mainstream musicians, celebrities, etc)
Kanye the only artist to wear a Cradle of Filth shirt and put out a gospel album 😂
Yeahhh that actaully makes him even more metal !
FM, I think you’re spot on with your explanation of how “metal heads” feel about their identity. I’m a very big fan of extreme metal and there is something quite appealing in believing that it’s something that is consumed by a very small group of individuals. But I don’t care if celebrities wear extreme metal band t-shirts. For example, I wouldn’t care if I saw Channing Tatum wearing a 1349 t-shirt. It means that the band will get exposure in a way that it usually wouldn’t. It really doesn’t matter because I know, in the end, that the very nature of extreme metal makes it a less appealing genre. It will likely never be as popular a genre as say, Pop, and that’s perfectly alright.
this is really interesting timing for this video. a rapper i like, ken car$on, recently started rocking a lot of slam/bsdm t-shirts. not even like surface level stuff, bands like cerebral incubation, visceral disgorge, fetal deformity, and gorepot. not only did it shock me, because how the heck did ken carson or one of his stylists even find this stuff, but it made me excited. when i got on his subreddit, people ask “what shirt is he wearing that design looks sick” and i can actually decode the logo and tell them what it is. i’m sure somebody at this point who likes playboi carti or ken carson has inevitably grown to enjoy devourment or something due to the culture crossover, and it makes me happy because i love both. :)
It's all subjective. It likely depends on which celeb is wearing the shirt more than anything. If it's a celeb a metal head is a fan of, you'll get no objection.
For example: Keanu Reeves is wearing a Machine Head shirt. I imagine most metal heads and Machine Head fans will geek out over that.
Example two: Amber Heard is wearing the same shirt...
Yep. They don’t like women very much
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA Not exactly where I was going with my example, but I think it's fair to say Amber earned her scorn.
I could have subbed Ezra Miller for Amber to make my point, just that Amber has had a lot of press lately and it was hard to avoid hearing about that whole ordeal, so she came to mind first.
This phenomenon is not limited to metal. I usually wear MLB ball caps. I collect hats form the stadiums I visited, and when I wear one of my hats, I try to color coordinate a bit with the other clothing I have on. When I explain to people that ask about the hat or mention the team, they find it funny when I tell them I'm not a fan of that team. They act like I shouldn't be wearing that hat.
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA no @dumbass, it's because amber heard is a pos. that was the point 🤦♂️
I think gatekeeping metal is ok when you're young - yeah, ok, you're still figuring stuff out and haven't learned acceptance yet. The sad part is these 30+ year olds getting genuinely angry about someone wearing a shirt or having an opinion.
I sold that Cradle Of Filth "possession is 9 tenths of the lord" shirt on eBay a while back and thought it was insane when it went for over $500, I guess it was probably Kanye bidding against Justin Bieber.
I wore my Metallica shirt today and was asked to name 3 Stranger Things episodes.
hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!
I think you’re spot on about metal/niche subculture people not actually wanting wtv subculture to be more popular. I think what most people really want is to be unique, different and seemingly more interesting than everyone else, but at the same time wishing they were more popular, not the subculture.
I think theres more to it
1. You can no longer identify someone with similar music interests unless they have other clear indications, when shirts were the easiest way, now it doesnt mean anything, and it muddied the water.
2. We got mocked for the shirts for listening to "devil music" and "scream" music that takes no talent, theyre crazy, etc. But then the very next year when a rapper wore it, now its cool and it doesnt matter if its devil music or not. And arguably, most of the bands that got called this werent even slightly satanic. Most were post hardcore and metalcore, so they were wrong too.
3. When people who wear these clothes dont listen to the music, stores that sell clothes start selling merch that lines up with the posers as well, like hot topic which has TONS of hip hop and rap shirts which fine, its called Hot Topic, not the metal store but even then, it was a metal store before this happened regardless of the name.
They change how accessible and inaccessible these things are and to me, thats really annoying when theres more stuff for hip hop than band t's in a store like that.
If i hadnt been mocked and was left alone, i wouldnt care that the energy flipped so heavily. Not only this, people start calling themselves rockstars because theyre alternative in aesthetic, but still do their same music. Look how you want, its trivial at its core, but it IS annoying for those reasons.
@@gengashaunt3322 You can absolutely identify someone with similar music interests based on wearing a metal shirt, all you have to do is speak to them. All it takes is 10 seconds to say "Hey sweet _______ shirt, you listen to them?" If you're not actually going to talk to them or have any meaningful interaction does it really matter if they have the same musical interests or not? People should be happy that people have become more open minded about metal in recent years, isn't that what we should want? Especially if you were given shit about it in the past, now that it's more acceptable that means others are less likely to experience the same thing.
@@Nightwishmaster you missed my point entirely. I dont care lol. This was in high school, and i was made fun of, so logically speaking, as an introvert anyway, im not going to approach someone if im not pretty sure itll turn out fine. But i didnt have to. Because at the time, my friends wore these shirts and thats how we became friends. It was easier when this wasnt happening. Secondly, im sure youre aware posers will lie and say they listen to these bands when they dont. If they dont ill be disappointed, but lying and being like oh i only know thiiiiis stuff and its like oh me too, which ones. Weeeeeell i dont know the names of the songs. To even be having this convo because i wondered if they even listened to the music creates a situation where im now seeming like a gatekeeper when i dont care what you do in reality, you created this situation by wearing it because i DO listen to it and i wanted to make a friend. Its hard to be friends with a poser when i can see it blatantly. It sounds judgemental but id rather pick my company wisely so i dont make them upset with me because i dont line up with the way they do things, i can leave them to live how they wish and not deal with it at all. Id rather not be in that position and this wouldnt happen were it not for stuff like my example with the shirts. Now im not in high school, and i hardly see any band ts ever at all so this isnt applicable anymore.
@@Nightwishmaster and wearing a shirt while having the same level of knowledge about it as you did before, which is none, isnt being open minded about metal. They dont give a shit about the music, they cared about fitting with the trend at the time, thats why you dont see it anymore at least where i am. Theyre just as ignorant to the music as they were, wearing a shirt doesnt change that. So no, this isnt what we should want, but i say that solely as a fan of metal. However what we do want is people to like what they like and do as they please like id like to be allowed to do, and it includes letting people do this anyway. Its not a big deal, its just minor grievance.

Honestly I can't believe we STILL have discussion about band T-shirts.
This happened with skateboarding too. Many times. The most recent one being the thrasher shirts. It's funny when people who don't skate wear them because of what thrasher is. But also whatever lol
Back in High School the non Skaters wore etnies, DC,DVS,Osiris along with t shirts from said company's and this was during the Tony Hawk Video Game era.
@@ogvelociraptor205 yup. That was me too haha. Then i actually started skating. But the thrasher Tshirt one was more cringe to me. Because it's thrasher.
Fans should be happy that metal iconography has achieved that level of cool.
It's like t-shirts with old-school comic book panels and covers being sold at Forever 21 or something. The image is so cool, so iconic, that it has transcended its own source material and engrained itself in mainstream culture. Which is, in a way, a bit sad too.
I used to get mad about celebrities who probably don't listen to the bands wearing metal shirts, but then I stopped caring about things that don't matter.
I’ve went from caring about this to not giving a shit the older I get
I agree with you that the uproar when this happens is just funny. But regarding the Kadashian/Holt beef his issue was that they were making their own unlicensed Slayer shirts and selling them, which is kind of different. But still, Holt should realize it's free publicity.
When I was a teenage metal edge lord I had no reason to know who the Kardashians were until Gary Holt came along and told me that I shouldn’t like the Kardashians.
Thanks for the shoutout to my favorite grocery store chain Safeway. It does kinda trigger me when I see people wearing Safeway tees when I know just by the looks of them they are Krogers shoppers. But hey, everyone wants to seem cooler than they are, so I can't fault them for it.
As a big fan of the genre, it doesn't really matter to me, it already grew on me when people decide to wear it for fashion instead of trying to listen to the music or get into any of their songs. Metal is for everyone and everyone needs to accept it in the culture. The word poser itself is an insulting word to those that get offended from their own view but again they are posers themselves. Good job with the video.
Every single time finn says the word "some" it sounds like he's about to sing all star
Finn, how did you not talk about what Dave Mustaine did? lmao Now *_THAT_* was taking petty to a whole new level.
He saw a woman wearing a dress that had Megadeth all over it in big letters. She was doing a photoshoot or something, but he said he runs up to her wanting to get a photo with her, and she kept ignoring him and starts to walk away while he’s yelling out “No, no! Stop! THAT’S ME!”
Guess he weirds her out, and the photographer that was with her was apologizing and said she was uncomfortable because she didn’t know who he or the band was (she was just a model doing a shoot lol)
Pissed him off so much he wrote a whole new song for their new album about her wearing a shirt of a band that she said she didn’t even listen to while saying she must be a “celebutante chick” after seeing Kendall in a Slayer shirt.
What’s worse are the fans cheering it on that they think it’s some form of ownage instead of just being nothing more than boomer rage. Of course, many are trying to say it’s justified because the girl called him a creep and was an ass to him, but come on … let’s be real, the reason is he was mad because the logo has become trendy for people to wear like the Pink Floyd prism or Rolling Stones mouth. Not cause she was mean to him lol.
haven't watch yet, but travis scott wearing an exodus shirt in the mamacita video did more for metal than literally everyone crying about celebrities wearing metal shirts combined.
So I watched a pretty interesting video where they asked actual people in metal bands how they feel about non-metal heads wearing a metal band t-shirt and a lot of them said that they didn’t care. One of the band members highlighted that is really shows off how good of a job the graphic designer did on the T-shirt. Personally I’m not gonna be like “ugh you shouldn’t wear this because you don’t listen to the band.” But back when I used to work at hot topic and I would see people buy the shirt just for the aesthetic then I would at least recommend a few of the hits so that way they can at least say they heard of a song or 2. Also Chris Motionless from motionless in white also brought up a good point where it’s like I remembered being bullied in middle school for wearing a band tee and now it’s cool and fashion? It does make me a bit upset but overall I think it’s cool. Plus how do y’all know that Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner don’t listen to Metallica and Slayer in their spare time, we’re not around them 24/7
Well Kendall straight up said she didn't understand how anyone could like Metal.
@lordtrigon1733 I mean i guess it's understandable, maybe they like the artwork and the aesthetic but don't like the music, it's not that strange
I used to be like that when I was like 15 because that's what you do when you're a cringey teenager.
It would even be funnier to see Dani Filth wearing a Beyoncé or Taylor Swift shirt.. their fans would lose their shit.
The pop fans would probably not even know who he was and would just ignore it. The Cradle fans (who don’t likely know who Bey and Tay are, other than the fact that they do “evil fake pop,”) would shit a brick so hard they’d leave holes in the sidewalk next to them.
I gotta say this, personally I look very “square “ pretty much always did but I’m a metal head as well so it’s hard to determine who listens to what based on their appearance. That being said i have a 20 year old who does wear band shirts and never listens to them, couldn’t name a song, it’s a bit conflicting. I do think it’s a bit odd wearing band merchandise that you don’t listen to but I’m of a different generation I guess.

It's the equivalent of being outraged someone is wearing a Washington t-shirt, but has never been here.
I love this. I want to see all the celebrities wear metal merch all the time.
Unironically same
*Insert sarcasm here*
Alot of people got bullied for listening to certain bands or dressing a certain way at a young age, which leads to a very "us vs them" mentality. Unfortunately, many bands often feed into this with music videos, like the one for waking the demon by BFMV. This causes a lot of people in the world of heavy music to be very uptight and shitty around people they perceive to be "on the other side". So when they see a celebrity that they perceive to be "preppy" wearing a metal or punk shirt, most of em won't see a regular person wearing a shirt they also like. All they can see is the douche that made fun of them for wearing a pierce the veil shirt when they were 11. It's not an excuse for people to be shitty though. Gatekeeping is annoying and usually sucks, but I wish people would take more time to understand why people in the world of heavy music act this way. I believe most of it comes down to the genre and it's listeners being treated with less respect by society, the entertainment industry, and the general media.
You spoke my mind right there. The sense of identity of a metalhead is very fragile and they (I include myself to some extent) feel great discomfort when a non-metalhead stick their nose into their world.
But for real, most of the time this happens, it's always the huge mainstream metal bands that are the subjects of the trend, and I couldn't care less.
Rare do I see a non-metalhead wear an underground band shirt, because they'd have to find it in a thrift/vintage store, and metalheads don't give away their underground shirts. No way! 🤣
Kanye wearing Cradle might just be the most ''extreme'' example.
Kanye is into enough “weird” music that I’d almost consider him an alternative artist who was just good enough (and lucky enough) to blow up. He’s also always talking about, praising various rock bands.
I think the super popular bands have enough pull that some of these people unironically like them.
Misfits and Ramones were basically Elvis with a few edgy lyrics and a fuzzy guitar tone, Maiden is pretty much Zeppelin+.
Nirvana was basically a hardcore band trying to do metal/old school hard rock/country rock. But their influence lead to Bush, Seether, then The Fray, Avril Lavigne, MB20, and I’d say we were still seeing some leftovers of the Nirwannabe craze even on Speak Now and Breakaway 🤪.
Metallica is, well, Metallica.
They’re all pretty listener friendly and I wouldn’t be shocked if Kim Kardashian or Justin Bieber or anyone else liked any one of them.
When I see somebody wearing a shirt with a band I like I get excited and tell the person I like their shirt. And I'm usually introverted. Lol.
Dave Mustaine wrote a song making fun of someone wearing a Megadeth shirt. She even met Dave and had no idea who he was! 😂
I will also add that 16 year old me would’ve been mad as hell over this. The 40 year old me couldn’t care less. I can understand where the gatekeepers are coming from, but at the end of the day, it’s just a damn t-shirt.
Imagine thinking Iron Maiden and Metallica are these secret little metal bands that only TRUE metal heads know about. Jesus H Christ.

It cracks me up when people make the comment about halsey like she literally did a song with bring me the horizon and her vocal range is soooo good
She also co-wrote and produced an album with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of NIN
This is so high school shit. I remember getting mad at one of the popular kids for being a "poser" and wearing a Guns n Roses shirt. I didn't even like GNR
When I'm asked about this subject a quote from Slash comes to mind when asked about his opinion on the beef between Cobain & Axl - " I don't have time for this s***."

To me it just proves that metal has the best logos and merch 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I completely agree in establishing confidence in your own identity and not worrying too much about the new fans.
I do have one thought that I can't shake and that it somehow cheapens the product.
I can't put a finger on it since some bands maintain the same energy in their shows since the beginning even with rebranding, but there have been new trends where the crowd change takes away from the original experience, such as moshing used to be a regular thing and then having to go to more heavier niche bands to get the same atmosphere.
So… metal fandom is a religion, basically.
Exactly
Which is also quite ironic
Thanks for the mention! 👍
I’m a huge fan!!
I really like wearing my red Puma t-shirt. Can I tell you their history or give you a rundown of their products? Nope, I just like the shirt.

I'm always amazed that someone over the age of 40 gives a shit about what someone else wears. Especially since there has always been thing more important things to worry about.
Full confession Finn: I bought a Technical Brutal Death Metal/Brutal Technical Death metal shirt before I really knew your opinions on the genre. I just thought it looked nice.
Anyway, a component I see is that wearing the merch of a band you don't like or have never heard of is a totally alien concept in metal. It's kind of a rule of the tribe. But the tribe's rules don't apply to nonmembers. They're not representing the metal scene anyway, no one thinks Kendall Jenner just crawled out of a circle pit. It's such a nonsense concern.
I'm just glad now I can casually mention Gary Holt or Slipknot and my normie wife knows exactly what I'm talking about. Someone should get a Kardashian to stream Shin Megami Tensei 5 or something.
I wish my life was so simple that I had time to worry about things like this.
I understand why some bands don't like the "wrong" kind of people wearing their shirts. Let's not forget that Stewart killed Winger by wearing their merch.
I saw the thumbnail and said, "Yup, all three of them."
from now on I'm only wearing shirts with images of celebs wearing band shirts
I think Dees point may have been when celebrities wear these shirts to seem edgy or cool and don’t really mention the bands. Ironically when posers wear the gear it still helps bands. As a metal guy when I see rad art I like I give the band a listen to see if I can get into em’. Maybe our goal should be to be more inviting and more people may genuinely get into the scene and help it grow. Idk fruit for thought.
Is my daughter a poser because she likes to wear my t shirts :-/ we went to a family gathering and the grandmothers all said "dying fetus!?" I laughed
All I’m saying is if I were wearing a wu tang shirt no one would ask me to name three wu tang songs.
People with very low self esteem often like to feel special about something.
Seeing a famous person repping your style makes it more mainstream, thus making the thing they feel makes them special somehow less special.
It's very self destructive and kinda sad
Wore a metallica shirt the other day and some stranger things fans came up to me and asked me to name 3 episodes
Gatekeeping dies with maturity and understanding. In the past it probably bothered me, but now it's just like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. If you see someone with a shirt of a band you like, just ask "oh shit, you like _____? 👀"
If yes, sick!
If they haven't heard them, "you should check them out, they're cool! 🙂"
It's just that easy.
If you look at the ages of a lot of the people complaining about "normies" wearing metal shirts, a lot of them are in their 50s n shit. I suspect that a lot of them grew up in an era where they would get legitimately bullied/persecuted for the music they listened to. The Satanic Panic was real after all. I'd imagine for someone like them, the idea that the music they got beat up for liking is now getting accepted by those same people probably stings. I'm not that age, I never grew up getting bullied for the music I like so I can't relate. But I suspect that is why so many old heads are up in arms about this.
It's not so different to when thrash metal fans were pissed off by Metallica's popularity with the Black Album. You spent years tape trading with other metal fans in Europe, being treated like a freak by people in your high school and moshing in dingy underground venues, and then all of the sudden your subculture is hip and cool with the same people who looked at you like a weirdo years earlier.
I see both sides of the coin. Giving these bands attention is a good thing, but it is kind of irritating when some celebrity walks around with a Possessed t-shirt when they would never think of listening to death metal.
I know it seems strange to alot of these people, but, (in my best Finn-whisper-voice), casual fans are ok too.
In high-school in 2003 or so when one of the Ramones died this cheerleader wore a Ramones shirt and of course you know she got the ol " You don't even know who they are/ name a song." All day long. It was ridiculous.
Just because someone makes a certain kind of music doesn't mean they don't also enjoy listening to other kinds of music
Exactly. Off the top of my head, Kanye has praised Nirvana and GNR as “both the greatest of all time,” and Taylor Swift has said she grew up listening to, and was influenced by, Dashboard Confessional and Fallout Boy.
The IT Crowd and Richmond obsession with Cradle of Filth is the first thing I think of when it comes to them
I'm not quite old enough to remember Dee Schneider during his Twisted Sister days, but I am old enough to remember him on that I Love the 80's show that was on VH1 lol
You make a valid point. I just bought my daughter a Slipknot shirt and you would never think this kid listens to the band, but she’s been listening to Slipknot since she was 3. How would anyone know and why should they give a damn?
Imagine being angry when someone buys one of your products lmao
WhY dId yOu GiVe mE mOnEy?!?! REEEEEEEE
Tom Hanks was known to put on Carcass at parties!
Now I´m gonna look for pics of Cradle of Filth members wearing Yeezy sneakers...
I dont think anyone in a band would turn down a merch sale due to a person not "liking them enough".
I’m a huge metalhead and I honesty don’t give a crap. At the very least it’s free advertising for a bands we should be supporting in the scene. People need to get over themselves.
