To me, the timeless message behind this beautiful song (which we probably won't have the pleasure of hearing live again since Marko is gone) is that we should cherish the time we have with our loved ones and tell them that we love them, don't go to bed mad with each other, but rather apologize with one another and make things right, because one day, they may no longer be with us, and if we don't do it, if we don't keep that delicate bond very tight, we could fall prey to painful regrets and guilt afterwards
there's certainly no one like Marco, but I can hear Troy on this. He's already got that nice low register, and I wouldn't think it would take much to get up to the higher here. Maybe it would be too much like Floor doing Meadows of Heaven, though ( although I do still kinda wish they would )
I absolutely agree....don't forget to show your loveones, that you love them....before it's too late...."while your lips are stille red" = while you are still alive...❤❤❤
Marco has elaborated on his exit from the band quite a bit. Firstly, depression and the anxiety it brought regarding him feeling not being able to perform well enough for the fans, and ruining the touring experience for his bandmates and crew by his brooding. Also disillusionment with the industry, especially regarding profit sharing. He feels bands and fans are getting fleeced. Edit: also the lyrics' reference to "still red" means "before blue/ grey" as in dead. Live while you still can.
So many reactors really dont care about those things so many ppl dont know true behind stage. And those things are crucial when u wish to understand someones art for real
I remember Marko saying that he got AD(H)D diagnose after leaving the band. Undiagnosed ADD is like driving a car with handbrake on for your whole live. I'll bet he was tired.
I'm pretty sure Marco isn't done with Nightwish, as a full time band member for sure it is over but I believe that once he has had a solid chance to stabilise himself and the band has had a chance to grow into it's new line up he will be back as a guest performer. There is unfinished business and it may take another couple of years for it to happen but I believe it will. Maybe whilst they are touring their new album??
@@mnewm21 Marco is pretty busy these days. He's touring two bands I believe. The Northern Kings and his own. In between he's involved with Arjen Lucassen's projects to whom he was introduced by Floor. Tuomas and Floor have (had) their own problems with depression/ burnout, so they understand Marco very well. But it still was a blow to all members. As far as I know, Marco has a history of depression. As I have personal experience with it, I think he's dysthymic.
Marko is dearly missed in Nightwish, the guy is a legend himself. Nightwish and Marko were together for almost 20 years. He got just Floor Freaking Jansen as backing vocals in this song.
I do believe I touch on that later in the review. See min 17+ :) keep watching. Just mentioned the lipstick reference in regards to things fading which to me, goes with the idea of “while you still can”
My thoughts with the red lips are the same. Maybe the melody created the dark mood, but to me it's kiss your beloved ones while they are living and don't miss the chance bevore they fade away.
Really? And here I was thinking they were sponsored by some make up company.😂 Just joking obviously. Yeah. NW has pretty much every song written a real message in mind. Sometimes they have song full of double meanings.
This beautiful little song was made for the Finnish movie "Lieksa!" (Pölönen, 2007). This sold out Wembley arena 2015 live performance is excellent. And by the way, l met Marko in my hometown in Summer 2021. We had a nice little chat. ⛄❄👍
For me: Lips are red when you are alive. When you die your lips turn blue. Don't be too late, show your affection / love while they are alive and enjoying your feelings for them.
Thanks Rosalie, just adding: as a nurse my image of lips still red contrasts with lips in which blood doesn't stream anymore, like in death or death approaching. So as for the verses: imaging freshness in life and love, something experienced maybe only once in a lifetime (hoping the passion was positive, good point)... the chorus emphasises to me the hint or tip or warning to not be too late to express your love... you never know if or when opportunity will disappear. So a warm hearted song, stimulating us to make a connection!
Marko is one of the few people in the world who can claim that Floor is his backing singer! 😬 I just love the sound of Troy playing the e-bow, such a haunting sound
"Sweet little words made for silence" is very much a Finnish sentiment. Finns are not much given to small talk or chit chat. They are quite comfortable sitting together in silence, speaking only when there is something worth saying.
Beautiful performance. I always thought it was saying, spend time with your loved ones before death takes the color from their lips. You never how much time you have with them.
Such a beautiful song, and probably my favorite with Marko on lead vocals. His low register is so warm and full, and then he jumps right up to those clean piercing highs. And of course Marko and Floor singing together is just magical.
The bad things in the news he was talking about in the intro point mainly to the Bataclan shooting in Paris which was a few weeks before this concert 😢
One of my dreams has just come true and I have to share I booked two tickets from South Africa for the Nightwish concert in Berlin on the 9th of June. For me, it's the same as a pilgrimage. Great reaction once again
This is probably the best explanation as to why he left, from the man himself: ruclips.net/video/ZKClkDme728/видео.html Essentially, he's been battling depression for years and he couldn't face touring again because of it. These days he's back into music, but has seemed to confine himself to Finland and surrounding countries. Worldwide touring seems to be off his agenda.
The Red Lips in this song are IMO not lips with lipstick on, but lips of people that are still alive with 'normal' body colors. Lips of dead people are no longer any type of red.
All Nightwish songs are emotions - and here Marko, Floor and especially Troy and his E-bow cemented this, so clearly. Great song, made for a movie - but enhanced live on stage.
Troy is verified by many that know him to be a master of 17 instruments as well as his vocal abilities. To be fair, 10 of the instruments are flutes and whistles (and bag pipes).
Check also the video - Tuomas wrote this for a movie. First without guitar and female voices. The video gives some ideas for this song even though you touched it in your analysis.
Lovely reaction! One of my favorite songs that Marko sings along with Endlessness from Human Nature. I love how vulnerable and emotional his voice is in this song. Add in Floor's gorgeous harmonies and this is just a beautifully emotional song. For me this song is all about innocent young love. That intensity and passion of the first time we fall in love or the first time you notice that girl whose dark hair is catching the wind. I think you nailed most of the lyrics really well. Lots of references to youth and innocence. I think the withering dawn is a reference again to becoming an adult and having to face teh reality of life. Tuomas is reminding us of the beauty of the innocent young love and reminding us to hang on to it or to rediscover it. I really connect emotionally with this song. It takes me back to my teenage self (Iam 60 now) on a weekend night, getting ready to go out with friends. All the hope and excitement of maybe meeting a girl that I can fall in love with and share my life with. Song was originally written for a Finnish movie and their is an official music video that incorporates clips from the movie but I have always found that video to be much darker then the lyrics and just kind of feels disconnected from the lyrics for me so I have always preferred this live performance with Floor.
Out of all of Marko's music (Tarot, Northern Kings, and Nightwish), this is my favourite from him. This live version blows the studio recording out of the water!
To put Marko's opening comments in context, this was in London not long after the Paris nightclub bombings. I think it was added to the setlist for that reason. Written by Marko and Tuomas for the 2007 Finnish movie Lieksa (The Matriarch), it's not an official Nightwish song. Jukka joined them for the recording. Floor's backing vocals and Troy's guitar with EBOW are additions to the song. Emppu gets to sit back and take a break. Marko does have an awesome voice. He sang lead on a few other songs with Nightwish, The Islander(Tampere 2015), the cover/tribute of Pink Floyd's High Hopes, Master Passion Greed (studio only), and Endlessness(lyric video). Marko sang lead in Tarot before joining Nightwish. Wings of Darkness or Tides by Tarot. Or try songs from Marko's 2020 solo album. Voice of My Father, and Stones.
Thank you for this one I like this song but then again I like Nightwish and everything they do this one is a good reminder to hold those you love close to you so again thanks for the ride today it was a good one as always your ride or die forever EyyyyOoooo
I hope you watch the music video for this song because the music video contains scenes from a Finnish movie Lieksa. It gives additional meaning to the song. This song was composed before Floor joined the band. I like how they added Floor, but definitely check out the music video.
@@NightwishArena I agree. It is great that Jukka is still involved with the band behind the scenes and who knows maybe Marco will return at some point but if not I wish him well.
This song is always a blooming of emotions for me. Thank you for reacting to the live version of this performance. This is one of my favorite songs by them.
He left because of the loss of his wife and ensuring depression. He's back as solo artist and has some songs out with Tarja (original nightwish singer)
Just been absolutely obsessed watching your raw reactions and breakdowns and what it means each song you watch. Especially the NF series you've started with Mansion is so awesome. That's what got me started. I've just been binge watching all of it, and I'm so excited to watch the rest of these cool perspectives of videos you put out! I just watched "How Could You Leave Us," and if it wasn't for being in public, I would have probably let myself feel it out. I've never really dealt with addiction in my life, but dealing with the yelling and screaming was just so so hard. Looking forward to even more of what you share(: thank you for being here and speaking your truth. Really looking to understand and appreciate from so many different perspectives what the music means to you. As a mother, a psychologist, teacher, songwriter, philosopher, and so on. I can tell you put so much effort into this, and I just want to let you know that it's appreciated. Thank you for every bit of life you show through this. I hope to only see you grow and transpire. To transition and keep growing into a more beautiful soul than the one you seem to have now. Thank you. And I dearly wish you all the best.
Obviously, Marko is the star here, with his fantastic vocals, but Troy is the unsung hero. His guitar playing with the ebow really sets the mood. Great reaction and analysis, Rosalie! 🤟
Rosalie you really have a brilliant thought process when you go through your reactions. It not always about the music but the lyrics and meanings behind it. It’s amazing the things you come up with .thank you for This❤️❤️❤️
LIke your comments a lot. They are personal and very much with expertice. You even pronounce finnish names right. So much reason to be proud about to be a finn.
Hello again, Rosalie. This is one of the delicate, wonderful performances that Nightwish creates that pull so much emotion from us. I thought your insights were interesting, but, to me, this is all about kiss your loved ones while you, and they, are still alive, while you still can show them how much they mean to you. The lyric "while bosom is still untouched, unveiled" combined with "while the hand's still without a tool, love while the night still hides, the withering dawn", means you are waking up with your lover, and she/he are still asleep, and you have not yet touched them sensually, but want to wake them softly and passionately. It goes with lyric, "A passionate hour's never a wasted one." As you said, Nightwish writes such poetic lyrics that everyone can build their own interpretation. In their beautiful song, Elan, there is a lyric that says, "Write a lyric for a song that only you can understand." That's Nightwish. That is Tuomas Holopainen. Loved your reaction to this wonderful performance.
Like @Jaakko Maaniemi said. With the profit sharing he means that promoters and venue owners even want a part of the profit of the merchandise they sell during the concert. If i understand correct there are only 2 big promoters and they monopolize the music world together with the ticket sellers. Where ever in the world you live you can't get around Ticketmaster and Life Nation and they are the reason tickets are so expensive. Most of it goes to them, Marko (and lots of other artists) finds it unfair to the artist who do not get paid fairly for the work they do to create the music and shows and also that this makes it unaffordable for a lot of fans to go see their favourite band(s). And he's right, i've seen prices grow exponentially. In the Netherlands we have Dynamo open air and there was a period of 10 years it was a multiple day event starting at 10 guilder (Pre EURO Dutch currency) and the last year is was 225 EURO (€1 is 2,2 guilder) all because the big guys took over.
Another layer to the red theme that struck me involves the spectrum of visible light as you get deeper into water. SCUBA diving has been a long time hobby for me and one of the first things you learn when getting into it is that red is the very first color to fade from our perception as we start to get deep. Feels like it fits well, metaphorically, with this song to me.
so fun looking at the lyrics. For me the big takeaway is allowing yourself to be removed from the dramas of living if only for a moment. Make time NOW for yourself and the other people in your life as who knows if time will allow it! Carpe diem...seize the day Time won't wait for you to be ready you have to make the time. Everything is talking about making the most of the time you have away from the cares of the world. Allow someone to wrap you up and take you away from the cares of the world and revel in the moment as fleeting as it may be. "eyes are still closed" reality is far away, "withering dawn" the harshness of light when you first reopen your eyes etc...such inspiring and poetic writing!
That song and The Islander I think were written by Marko because recently I found out that he was the second writer of the band. I think the red on the song has to do with the life like kiss before you die because he spoke also for cats and dogs before to start singing
love this deep dive into all the things this song could mean, very interesting thank you :) also i love the suddenly falling rose(?) in the background at 21:28, feels like it was meant to be while deciphering these lyrics!
That snow may be a callback to that odd music video. I couldn't tell if that video was a mashup between a finnish t.v show or film and band presence. Within Temptation made a similar music video that seemed it was paired with an active cinematic program (Where is the Edge). The video though touched on what you mention--loving while someone is still alive--but portrayed in both alive as in living and alive emotionally, a constrast between love and possession. '-hand without a tool' in the video, portrayed as the antagonist posseses the love interest with 'tool' as a hand or 'fist' for violence.
A couple of things that I know or heard about Marco leaving Nightwish and this song (none of them connected to the other subject). Marc left because he has suffered from depression for a while and I think there is a statement or interview who he explains his leaving. He said he didn't leave because of anything in the band itself but because of his depression and the way the industry is. You can read the official resignation announcement on Nightwish's official website.
As for the song, I believe it was wrote for a movie soundtrack and clips of the movie are in the songs official video. The movie was the 2007's Lieksa. It is included on the Nightwish single Amaranth and on the album Dark Passion Play. It isn't an official Nightwish track as Toumas is never comfortable releasing any material under his own name. According to Wikipedia: "The Nightwish website clearly states that the song was written by Tuomas Holopainen and features him on keyboards, Marko Hietala on vocals and Jukka Nevalainen on drums.[2] The song does not include guitars or female vocals. The videoclip accredits the song to Holopainen and Hietala, leaving out Nevalainen, who was not involved in the songwriting. The whispering in the background is done by Tuomas Holopainen.
The song has been played on concerts in various occasions, while guitarist Emppu Vuorinen and former vocalist Anette Olzon were backstage. More recent performances have also featured Floor Jansen with additional vocals, and Troy Donockley with a guitar solo played with an EBow in place of the prominent violin sound from the studio version. These include a performance at London's Wembley Arena in 2015 that was released on the band's 2016 live album Vehicle of Spirit.[3]"
I always thought the title was a bit more simple, not even lipstick but just physiologically red, as in while you’re body is still warm and your lips haven’t gone blue from death … (I wish I could phrase it softer than that) This is such a beautiful song, it’s a nice change of pace in the Wembley set. Great ballad with a great message of not taking your life or your loved ones for granted. First time I’ve seen the video of it, didn’t realise that it’s Troy playing lead guitar (and I think I saw an e-bow in his picking hand?) and couldn’t even see Emppu on stage. I think I read somewhere that this song was more of a b-side, it’s not on any of the studio albums, it’s something that Marko and Tuomas (and maybe Troy and/or Emppu) wrote, but they didn’t really consider it a true Nightwish song.
I think what you refer as synthesizers are the sound of Troy's guitar. In the studio version they use a violin, but for the live version Troy uses a device called e-bow that makes the strings vibrate without plucking them, simulating the bow of a violin, but almost everybody agrees that the e-bow/guitar combination sounds better than the violin. So far, I have never seen a comment where anyone states a preference for the violin.
About your new det up... I really love the fact that you added a frame with the letter Ψ honouring your science. Here in Greece many psychologists uses this symbol since it's the first letter of the word psychology (Ψυχολογία) and the world soul (ψυχή). Your reaction and analysis to the song was amazing. Can't wait for more Nightwish! Greetings from Athens 🤘🇬🇷 Eyooo
There has been a lot of speculation about Marko's departure, especially because it happened shortly after he won "The Mask Singer" contest at Finland as The Doctor, and many people said he wanted to do his career away from Nighwish. I watched an interview where in his own words, Marko says that he left the band because of his mental health. He has been battling anxiety for years, and rehearsing, traveling, sleeping in different hotels every night was becoming increasingly difficult. He used to say to himself for the 90, 95 minutes a show lasted, that the joy of performing was all worth it, but he got to a point where he just had to work on his issues. At the date of the interview, he mentioned that he had taken a break and he had started performing again, places close by where he doesn't have to take a 14 hours flight, some appearances with friends, mostly because he enjoys the stage, but he is taking things slowly, and I assume he is resting and probably taking therapy. I don't know if he is already starting to tour again, but at that time he said he was just booking presentations here and there, but avoiding long trips and full tours. After watching that interview, I just wish him good luck, I hope he gets better and healthy, and thank him for his amazing contributions to Nightwish. His presence and talent will be greatly missed.
It's not about lipstick. It's about live, and living it. A person's lips will always be a shade of red, simply by the fact it has many small blood vessels in it. Only in death lips will no longer be red(ish) - with a possible exception for extreme hypothermia. It's an encouragement to tell someone you love him/her for tomorrow he/she might no longer be alive and you will for the rest of your life regret the opportunities lost.
So Rosalie... Do you have jumped to Within Temptation rabbit hole yet? It's an Dutch Symphonic metal band and is also female led one. Den Adel is such a angelic singer that you keep some of their music to your channel too. Also Kamelot is an good band. Male singer lead vocalist.
My mother in law is currently dying. My wife has just said her last goodbye. I have listened to this song many times, but this time it got me, the significance of the words, I had tears running down my face. Great analysis of the song My dear. Thank you :)
He needed medication for depression and was hard to continue as health was an issue for him. However, he is really missed. A great singer and performer. Nightwish said they cannot replace his vocals so just going to Adapt with Floor and Troy being vocalists.

@@NightwishArena I agree. It is great that Jukka is still involved with the band behind the scenes and who knows maybe Marco will return at some point but if not I wish him well.
Me too
@@NightwishArena Jukka rules!
if you want another version of Marco check out his bands live (i think 2020) version of War Pigs
This song is always a blooming of emotions for me. Thank you for reacting to the live version of this performance. This is one of my favorite songs by them.
He left because of the loss of his wife and ensuring depression. He's back as solo artist and has some songs out with Tarja (original nightwish singer)
Marko is great, he can be so gruff but also so sweet. I reckon he would be a crack up to hang about with
The backing singer on this one is quite good should go far !!!!! ..😎
haha
Thank you very much :)
❤❤❤❤ Pure Beauty
Love him so much ❤
Great reaction to this sweet song.Thank you.❤️
Gorgeous song Thankyou for sharing your reaction to this one.
Marko and Floor = Perfection
Obviously, Marko is the star here, with his fantastic vocals, but Troy is the unsung hero. His guitar playing with the ebow really sets the mood.
Great reaction and analysis, Rosalie! 🤟
I read that as elbow first 😂 That would be even more impressive! 😁
Rosalie you really have a brilliant thought process when you go through your reactions. It not always about the music but the lyrics and meanings behind it. It’s amazing the things you come up with .thank you for This❤️❤️❤️
Gives you goosebumps, it goes straight to your soul, had to kiss my wife....
It's from a movie. There is a music video for this song. If you watch it you'll realize what it's about. It made me cry watching it.
Ya , embrace life before it slips by, loved ones or oneself can be gone forever in the blink of an eye.
LIke your comments a lot. They are personal and very much with expertice. You even pronounce finnish names right. So much reason to be proud about to be a finn.
thank you :)
Loved your reaction ❤️ Marko is amazing ❤️ from South Africa 🇿🇦
Marko Hietala and his old band "Tarot" do one show next summer in "Old Farts Rock", Kuopio, Finland.
I cannot liste this song without start crying. My mother passed away last november
i'm sorry for your loss. wishing you moments of comfort and peace today
21:28 Withering dawn...
when the flower falls
Danke fuer deine schoene reaktion!
Nightwish song Islander is also good. Marko makes music and still performs in Finland. You can also listen to him sing in his old band called Tarot.
I think the red on the song has to do with the life like kiss before you die because he spoke also for cats and dogs before to start singing
this movie music to Markku Pölönen s Lieksa!eng The Matriarch,2007,good video also there.🤘🇫🇮👍😎
Nightwish Army south Brittany France reporting, imagine Floor Jansen being your backing singer
What an exit.
love this deep dive into all the things this song could mean, very interesting thank you :) also i love the suddenly falling rose(?) in the background at 21:28, feels like it was meant to be while deciphering these lyrics!
speechless🤩🤘✌
@The_Rosalie_Reacts love a Nightwish fan ... Just be a fan ans enjoy
Troys E-bow work is fantastic
Very good choice. And well done from your side as ever. Liebe Grüsse aus Wien. Marko auf Top-Level - and Floor supports him well.
This one means to me "carpe diem"
🤗🍒🤘🏻😘this song is for Floor's time and was requested for a series or movie in Finland !!
This song is part of the OST of a movie.
Thanks
I'm ready! 😁
I always thought the title was a bit more simple, not even lipstick but just physiologically red, as in while you’re body is still warm and your lips haven’t gone blue from death … (I wish I could phrase it softer than that)
This is such a beautiful song, it’s a nice change of pace in the Wembley set.
I love Troys E-bow
I have to say: lyrics are ALWAYS important in Nightwish.
Tuomas never writes "a bunch of riffs".
This was co-written by Marco and Tuomas.
I still love you, R.
This is the soundtrack of the movie "Lieksa" or "The Matriarch"
So Rosalie...
Do you have jumped to Within Temptation rabbit hole yet? It's an Dutch Symphonic metal band and is also female led one.
Den Adel is such a angelic singer that you keep some of their music to your channel too. Also Kamelot is an good band. Male singer lead vocalist.
If you have Floor as your backing singer, you know you did it... 😁
Definitely try the original music video, This is movie music, so the video shows lot of things that the story tells. Both are great versions!
These lyrics are based on a film, yes, it is a sound track. Please be so kind and check the original track, so you better will understand the meaning of this song. Es wird dir gefallen!
ENDLICH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😍😍😍😍😍
