      Just say to them, "Talk to me in 20 years !" I'm living proof (71 and taking no meds) that a healthy diet is what will keep you healthy into old age. I slacked when it came to exercise (off and on to lose weight) but followed a Mediterranean Diet since I was in my early 30's. Always loved fresh fruits and veggies and avoided processed foods, sweets, pizza, fried foods, and soda. I mostly credit it to learning about the health benefits of EVOO (first cold pressed) and have cooked with that almost exclusively and ate a lot of olives and avocados (healthy fats - MUFAs). Ignore them.

      There is a reason scientists says that the top killers (heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, stroke and cancer) are PREVENTABLE diseases. It's all about your diet (and exercising regularly and getting plenty of sleep).

    On the note of encouragement I would like to say that when I was 26 I had my right ovary removed, it was the size of a large grapefruit (mine was simple and never twisted.) I have PCOS but I went on to have two children and never had any hormonal issues and went through menopause at 54! Hopefully you too will never have any adverse side effects from the surgery. Keep on hiking!

    Thanks for sharing the trail's beauty with us today. That lunch sandwich looked great and your supper looked even better.
    Your kind acknowledgement about the comments on your channel wasn't really necessary, but I see it as a type of tradeoff. You hike and share your adventure and some of your feelings about it with us. I think most of us know how hard it can be at times to push on when maybe you're having a blah day. We all have them. If a kind word of encouragement from one of us can help you in some small way to better your day, it's a win-win. It's the least we can do. Enough for now. Best wishes as always and keep having fun as you go!

    • @coughingowloutdoors8579

      @S M to me it seems almost like an obligation to cheer on someone that is pushing for a goal, trying to challenge one's obstacles. I suppose it kinda comes down to knowing that it's going to most likely be a very positive life changing experience for the hiker, and being just a small part in that success is worthwhile.
      A word of encouragement can go along way at times.
      I hope that you have the time of your life next year!

    Hi Kelly, I’m a 71 year old and I’m living vicariously through your hiking. I’m following one other AT hiker and I must say, the food you eat on trail is so great! I started following AT hikers last February as I was recovering from back surgery. I’m a hiker but doubt I’ll be able to back pack again. You are an inspiration, though.

    I’m speaking for myself though I’m pretty sure most folks will agree with me:
    You are a bright spot in my day.
    I feel as though I’m following a friend on her adventure. I like rooting for my friends.
    You have such a nice balance in your vlogs: you show us stuff and you tell us about stuff.
    You also share yourself, your feelings and emotions.
    And, above all else, you do these things with humility.
    You say we brighten your days. Well, believe me, the feeling is mutual.
    Lastly, I’m happy for you and Steph getting to spend this time together. I like seeing her out there with you. She brings out a side of you that’s new for us.Happy Trails!

    • @djg5950
      @djg5950 3 года назад +1

      @@gratefulhikes I have studied diet (for 40 yrs really) for the last 5 years. Read all I can find. That being said, IMO LCHF isn't the same as Keto (exactly). I tried to follow Keto (made it about 10 days and gave up) in 2017. I never went into Ketosis (I'm impatient when it comes to diets - I want to see results within 2 weeks at the most). I refused to give up fresh fruit. I eat about 3 servings per day. I think the sugar in them stopped the ketosis from happening. Anyway, after I continued with the bacon, avocado, and eggs for the next year, because I liked them. Never ate much bacon or eggs before that time and my cholesterol was always low. It shot up 70 points over that year. Close to 270. I stopped eating bacon and eggs for the next year and lowered it 36 points. Still working on it (didn't have my blood tested last year). What I'm curious about is people who follow Keto: What is your cholesterol count ? No one answers that (only know one other person doing Keto and she won't say).

    • @djg5950
      @djg5950 3 года назад

      What benefits have you found from following Keto ?

    • @gratefulhikes
      @gratefulhikes 3 года назад

      @@djg5950 That is a HUGE question to answer in a hiking video comment, but here goes: What benefits do I get from choosing to be in ketosis? Mental clarity, complete physical health, complete removal of prescription meds, weight control, slowing of cancer cell growth, slowing of the effects degenerative brain conditions such as CTE, and most importantly pride in knowing that I am in control of how I look and feel because I choose to care about the fuel I give myself to live my best life. That's but a drop in the bucket of the benefits I get from my choices, but I think thats a good start :)
      As for your other questions, first, all keto "diets" are LCHF, but not all LCHF "diets" are keto. Over the last 2+ years, I limited my daily net carbs to either 10 a day for the first year, increasing to 20 a day after that. Those net carbs are typically from veggies. Also, 99.9% of what I eat has no added sugar. When I choose food, I make sure to know all of the criteria that make up the nutrition of an item: Energy balance (calories), Fats, Carbs, Vitamins, Minerals, Protein, Water. I love all of the things that allow me to stay at the 20 net carbs a day, so for me it is easy. Yes fruit will keep you from getting into ketosis, and the carbs in the sugar will cause your cells to store the fat in the bacon and eggs and avocado, keeping you from seeing the effects that you were looking for.
      As for my labs, my last set were significantly better than the 60% of American's that are overweight or obese as well as the 37% that suffer from metabolic syndrome. I am not going to give you specifics, but all but one of my cholesterol numbers were at or better than what the doctor would want to see in someone 15 years YOUNGER than me. The one item that was "higher" than what he wanted to see was my LDL, but he had ordered an LDL-C test not an LDL-P which is not as accurate in showing if I actually had high LDL. Someone that follows a LCHF lifestyle will have more LDL because our fuel source is fat not glucose. When we reran the LDL-P test (which test for particle size not concentration) my # was again in line with someone much younger than me. It is also important to not that this set of labs was also better than when I was just doing calorie restriction.
      I don't want to get much deeper into this as I do love the subject and could go on for hours, but I think its important to say that just like walking the AT, with any nutrition lifestyle that you choose to do, you need to "hike your own hike", you need to own it, and you need to give it 110%, 200% of the time. Being healthy isn't easy, but I love this place, I love my family and friends, and I want to be here as long as I can! Hope that wasn't too much and I hope I answered some of your questions. Be well DG ❤️

    The thing I admire most about you is your continued adherence to eating healthy on the trail. I'm taking notes. I can't stand most "trail foods" and try to avoid processed foods. sugary foods and highly salted foods. Leaves out most of the foods hikers carry and eat. Never tried the Wholly Guacamole but avocados are one of my favorite foods. I eat 2 or 3 a week. I'm noticing the dark circles under your eyes (I had them a lot when I was younger, too so I've researched causes a lot). Two of the most common reasons is lack of sleep and iron poor blood (Taylor Nahamsha Hiker has them, too). Could be your monthly causing them, too ? See you eating tuna so you may be getting plenty of iron in your diet. Are you getting enough sleep ? Stay healthy. You're doing fine, just a little concerned about the dark circles (the mother instinct in me, LOL !). Oh, dried apricots are high in iron. Beans, spinach, fish, broccoli, pumpkin seeds (that's a surprise to me), and quinoa.

    • @djg5950
      @djg5950 3 года назад

      Just got to the part where you are thanking us for our comments and you mentioned dizziness. That is another sign of iron poor blood. I have never had an operation (after age 5 when I had my tonsils removed) so don't know of any lasting effect of anesthesia so don't know if that was the cause or not. You did lose a lot of blood because of the operation and had it replaced that could have caused low iron, too. Just thinking out loud........ Try eating iron rich foods for a while and see if things improve.

Wishing you the best on the rest of your journey.

    Thanks for taking the time and effort to put these videos together Kelly. Looks like you're doing great. Your coverage of the great outdoors and the positivity that you share with all of us is a bright spot with everything going on in the world. Really enjoying watching this adventure. P.S. Love your Arkansas accent BTW.

    You are my favorite hiker. Your videos are so interesting. Your food selections are awesome. So healthy and good. I know you are going to make it to mt Katahdin. Keep making good decisions. When you need a zero day take it. There is always tomorrow. Keep headin north.

    Looks like an amazingly beautiful hiking experience . Have you felt any changes in your perception of life ? Like I hear it changes you, makes you more grateful . Any truth to that ? Is the beauty and the experience of the AT feel like an epic adventure/journey ? Like what are your thoughts on trail about this experience thus far ? Any doubts or regrets on things you may have or haven't carried with you ? I think your doing a phenomenal job by the way ,keep up the good work and the awesome videos .

      This is the one thing I have always wondered, too. Everyone always says how the trail "will change you" but no one actually explains how it changed them. I suspect it's different for everyone and maybe they just don't know how to put it in words. Or exactly how it did change them. I've traveled a lot (judging from friends and co-workers lives in comparison) and any travel is an epic journey/adventure. You don't have to be hiking in the woods. Just getting away from your "normal" life and seeing different parts of the World and how other people live is humbling and eye opening. If I may speak up about the regrets (that you mentioned) ? If someone regrets not carrying something it's easy just to buy it in the next town. If they aren't using something they can send it home or drop it in a hiker box. Easily remedied.

    We call those mushrooms pheasant tails. They are edible, but not very good IMO. I think the people who eat them really just like fried foods. You also have to harvest them when they are very young. Love the videos. Thank you!
