Magnolia (1999) Official Trailer #1 - Paul Thomas Anderson Movie
An epic mosaic of several interrelated characters in search of happiness, forgiveness, and meaning in the San Fernando Valley.
I remember watching this movie and praying it doesnt stop till eternity. What a masterpiece
watch Crash , ya might love it too
what exactly did u like bout it?
@@abenaz did you watch it?
@@abenazI love everything about it except for the song in the middle.
@@tenebrae23 when
just watched this movie for the first time and I already think it's my favorite film of all time. what a ride.
How did I wait 21 years to watch this piece of pain and art... it hurts that I didn't find this movie till it was forgotten...superb film five star
me too. I will watch it NOW ❤️😭
Next Week i want to look it ✌️
Sometimes it is good to find these masterpieces much much later when they were made. Like only a few years ago I saw the One Flew Over the Cuckoos nest and it was amazing. I just realised why it is better we find them later, because back in the year when it was released, mostly people aged much older than us watched those movies, so we had to become their age before to watch it in order to fully understand it. I guess.
Just watched this movie and was not expecting the rollercoaster of emotions or how well portrayed every character was
One of the best films ever made.
In my top 3 along with Requiem for a Dream, and Natural Born Killers. Hard to put in order. Could watch these three movies a hundred million times and still be heavily moved each and every time.
Interdimensional Steve respect for having requiem in there
What is this even about?
I’m so fcking confused
@@gypsy-nr9zd Guess you have to watch it?
My interpretation is that there are things that are truly outside of the control of the characters (i.e. bad parents, tragic events, past mistakes). They have two choices either constantly blame themselves or move forward and make a positive change on their lives.
Ty for your recent comment :)
first part is right. Second part is not so right. We see no matter what the intention of any given character is, it will fail in cosmic irony. Our journey through chaotic events isnt the past that made us, it is the present we continue to live through. Don't mistake the children for Angels. This doesn't mean the children are just children. He means they are supernatural prophets, but not benevolent. They are neutral to our struggle.
"Sometimes people need a little help... sometimes people need to be forgiven... and that is a very tricky thing in my part... making that call... what can we forgive?"
The whole point of the film!
This is one of them films that you never ever forget and will always want to rewatch , my opinion is this is a masterpiece with a superb cast and beautiful music loved it ❤
I remember when it came out working at Home Depot at the time, an older lady coworker said she walked out of the theater when Tom Cruise did his men’s empowerment seminar. 😂
@@KazzArie oh dear that’s a shame must have been a trigger moment for her 🤦🏻♂️😂
always want to rewatch????? I could relate to all the characters, I had to watch it in three parts over three days, I was just crying and crying and crying, it was horrible.
@@KazzArieshe walked out too soon... Nearly happened to me in the film' piano'when she had to put off clothes for her instrument, Lucky that I stayed in the theater.. But sometimes hard to stand when women are treated bad...
That's actually a really good trailer.
The greatest trailer in history
Also... the greatest haircut in history
I dont know, for me the trailer makes the movie seen as a random lot of nonsence.
@@Jaba6798 I agree with you 100% pal! It's so emotional, inspirational, powerful and epic! I always remember seeing this trailer for months in the cinmea prior to its UK release date (April 2000) and I love it still today 20 years later 👍👍
A really good trailer for a masterpiece of a movie.
This Aimee Mann soundtrack slaps hard AF.
The score by Jon Brion is amazing as well
I'm guessing slap means good?
@@paulelroy6650 You get it.
"I really do have love to give, I just don't know where to put it."
The purest art, truth, excellence and wonderment that you could possibly wish to experience on a movie screen. I pity anyone who hasn’t seen it 🎥
That would be me. So another commenter rates this as 3rd behind Requiem for a Dream & Mullholand Drive as their their top faves. Requiem mortified me & I’m pretty sure Mullholland also isn’t my cup of tea. That said, I’m deliberating if Magnolia is cut from the same cloths here. Any thoughts?
I’m about to watch this movie for the first time
How was it bruh
Blade I loved it it’s in my top three Films of all time
@@randywhite3947 damn bro. Welp, ima watch it then. Will report back my analysis
I just this weekend and man, i can't believe i missed this gem! PT Anderson is truly one of the greatest storytellers of our time!
Wow I literally have never heard of this film so now I’m about to watch lol!
RIP Jason Robards (July 26, 1922 - December 26, 2000), aged 78
RIP Philip Baker Hall (September 10, 1931 - June 12, 2022), aged 90
RIP Ricky Jay (June 26, 1946 - November 24, 2018), aged 72
RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman (July 23, 1967 - February 2, 2014), aged 46
You will always be remembered as legends.
John C Reilly broke my heart in this. Love his performance
His performance is the most surprising aspect of this film. You watch him and usually it just feels like you're watching your buddy John in every movie but this one he really gets you to feel for him. He's perfect
@@TonyDanza4Lyfe Makes sense, he is an incredible actor.
Shoutout to the guy who made trailer and revealing absolutely nothing 😅
Andrew Alvarado that was the Director himself.
absolutely. the point of a trailer is to make people interested in seeing the movie. not to see a 2 minute recap of the movie.
@@strangerjones5576 Amen
Yes, because the trailer is an absolute mess! I can't discern anything from it and looks incredibly boring. Never seen this movie, but would like to because Tom Cruise is in it.
@@strangerjones5576 that happens too often now
All actors in this film did such an amazing job. P.T. Anderson is such a genius.
Am I the only wierdo that watches this movie any chance they get? Literally from start to finish. Please tell me im not the only one! lol Easily one of the best films ever made.
i get called weird bc i like to re-watch my fave movies😭 i feel better knowin i'm not the only one lol
This trailer gives me chills. And I mean that in the best possible way.
One of the best trailers ever for the best film ever made.
Oh this movie made me cry, and still does. ❤️
One of my favorites. I just re-watched it the other night. It is really one of the greats. Everyone does a good job, acting and otherwise. I'm not sure how much credit is given to the score or the soundtrack. The placement of certain songs is ace.
The Soundtrack is given plenty of credit
you sound like a robot Where is your emotion
If I remember correctly PT Anderson said the idea for the film was an interpretation of Aimee Mann's music and of course other things too.
So, this is the breaking point in PTA's career. This is the one where he went bananas.
I loved it.
Just like Spielberg did with 1941.
Tom should have won an oscar
For this 🎞️
Tom Cruise, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Aimee Mann all should have won the Oscars they were nominated for. Julianne Moore and John C. Reilly deserved awards as well.
Tom Cruise was incandescent in the movie. He is very under-rated as a serious actor - people can't see past his pretty face.
Paul Thomas Anderson- Brilliant filmaker. I miss these types of films. You don't see films of this level made anymore. Very little depth to most big movies today. Movie companies only care about making money anymore. It's sad.
In the end, all movies are a product that are intended to make money.
@@fromthehaven94 yep 😢 but still there are quality films made out there
Tom Cruise is *sooo* good in this. As much as I like the Mission: Impossible films, I really wish he'd go back to doing some more dramatic parts, like this.
GregOrCreg nah Tom’s earned the right to do whatever movie he wants
@@randywhite3947 Earn has nothing to do with it. I just want him to do more interesting films again.
I will start to do more dramas in the coming years
@@tomcruise7631 Good to know Tom! 👍🏽
@@tomcruise7631 super sir🤗
"now that we have met, would you object to not seeing me again?"
Amazing screenplay
And he took that line from an Aimee Mann song.
I watched this movie for first time just 4 months ago and have seen it twice more since. Man...this is a deep good heart felt ...make you really think about your own road movie. Just writing this has me all tore up and its on niw aboit half way already. I cannot speak more loudly that the part about the regret thw dying father of cruise feels is one if the best 5 minutes of film eber made...he is so right
I think the best part of this trailer is the last 3 sentences:
"Was that unclear?"
"Kind of...."
"huh...oh god"
bugfacedog44 it was a comment against, A PT Anderson picture brilliant!
This movie takes me back to 1999 and 1999 is one of the greatest years in the 20th century and an end of a century
you are right.. 🤙
For shizzle definitely an awesome year
@@TonyDanza4Lyfe yeah I know and it had great movies like the mummy star wars the phantom menace Austin powers the spy who shagged me muppets from space fight club stuart little
I’ve never watched any of Paul Thomas Anderson’s movies, and I can’t wait to do so! I heard they’re really good!
Bruh, he is one of the best directors today. I recommend you watch all of his films. Sure, his films are not for everyone, but his filmmaking style is the GOAT.
Boogie nights and punch drunk love are amazing ((:
perfect movie. took me by surprise.
All directors should make their own trailers if their film is worth a damn
The first time I watched the trailer, I got a feeling that this must be a very good movie, and it is. This is one of my favorite drama movies of all time😍😍👍👍
This movie magnolia and American beauty are timeless classics
One of the greatest movies of all time!
Was this trailed edited by PT Anderson himself? I know he personally edited one of the trailers for this film.
Yep.
Yeah, for "There Will Be Blood". He didn't want the studio to do it, and they got pissed at him for releasing the trailer. He was really proud of that lol.
PTA, Nolan and Soderbergh edit most of their own trailers.
@@FrancoisDressler And Fincher.
@@sebastianbjork7722 Synder too. Directors are starting to edit their own trailers again because ads companies just makes the most generic, boring trailers that gives away everything.

My favorite film of 1999! I saw this 3 times in the cinema.
no way, 1999 = best year for movies imo
JelqtronZero 1994 and 1939 are better
JelqtronZero that’s exactly what op said.
1999 is always been the greatest year of great movies like the mummy star wars the phantom menace Austin powers the spy who shagged me and fight club and 1999 reminds me it's the end of the 20th century
as a 15 year old kid who saw the movie for the first time a couple months ago, you have no clue how *jealous* i am
My favorite film ever!!! ❤️ ❤️
This will all make sense in the end...
Julianne Moore, Melora Walters, Phillip Baker Hall, John C. Reilly, Phillip Seymour Hoffman & William H. Macy were also in Boogie Nights
jon brions soundtrack is criminally underrated
Actually one of the best classic trailers Ive ever seen
Arguably the best movie of the 90s
That would be pulp fiction, but this is up there.

*People look up.*
*And when it rains, it pours.*
one of the best trailers in history
Couldn’t agree more!
R.I.P Philip Baker Hall. I saw the film around the time he died without knowing.
I didn’t realize he died
Tbh I didn’t know he was still alive
RIP wonderful actor
1:41 i just realized that pta (he edited the trailer himself im pretty sure) removed the frogs from the shot of rose’s car crashing, so as to not spoil the surprise
one of the best trailers ever i think
This movie is one of the reasons of why I'd become an actor, thank you so much P.T.ANDERSON.
brilliant movie
Best 90s movie zero question
Reading the reviews made me want to watch this flick more than the trailer.
Just watched a Chris Shelton (who grew up in Scientology and then escaped as an adult) video in which he says the character Tom Cruise plays in this film IS Tom Cruise. And that the film is "100% Scientology" (Paul Thomas Anderson being a huge Scientology critic).
I cannot say enough good things about this movie. A million times better than that formula crap "Crash". With many of my favorite films, they tend to diminish in reverence the more I watch them. But this actually gets better each time I watch it because I see new things each time. Watch for all the long coordinated takes.
There are more great Oscar worthy performances in this movie than you will see in a years worth on nominees. Tom Cruise is mesmerizing....and I am truly not a Tom Cruise fan. The acting from everyone is just a thing of beauty...same with Julianne Moore, Phillip Baker Hall and William H Macy.
In my opinion, Magnolia is PT Anderson's masterpiece. He came close in Boogie Nights. Hard Eight, Punch Drunk Love, The Master and There Will Be Blood are all great but none contain the power of this film. Every single scene is memorable. The music that is done by Aimee Mann works with the scenes they are placed in as well as the soundtrack.
I know the more "refined" critics will lean towards Altman's Short Cuts but I find it slow and uninteresting.
Plus name me another movie that flashes Exodus 8:2 on a street sign right before it starts raining frogs!!!! Movies like this are why no other medium are as powerful as film!
+Rusty Ryan Well said, this is one of my favourite movies. Tom Cruise deserved an Oscar for this, as did others including Julianne Moore. Just incredible.
bravo, couldn't agree more with every word. And Cruise was ripped off for not winning the Oscar.
Clearly you haven't heard of Babel or Cloud Atlas.
Plus there was a rope in the beginning where a man jumped over the ledge formed like a number 82.
Sweet cant wait to check this movie out, loved boogie nights and there wilĺ be blood how this one slipped by me i have no idea but looking forward to this
i'm watching this movie right now
3 hours holy crap
I have had an emotional response to this trailer.
hahahaha I love how cheeky that ending is,
*A P.T. Anderson Picture*,
Tom Cruise: "Was that unclear?"
This shows the passengers, but road they take is hidden. Damn good film with brilliant trailer.
Cant believe i have never seen this movie
"Now That I've meet you, would you object to never seeing me again"? This is one of the best thing's I've ever heard 😊
That's a horrible thing to say to someone who likes you
@TonyDanza4Lyfe I know I've felt that way, haven't you? The desire to leave a relationship at its most pure before all the pain and heartache?
Before you disappoint those you love that are new in your life...
The greatest film ever made...I am fortunate to have 2 copies that I'll never part with
Easily his best movie. I hope he returns to something like this
I hope he never “returns” to anything. Rather, I hope he keeps moving forward.
Do you not like Magnolia? It is such an original piece@@hammill444
Aimee Mann wrote the music which I think really tied it together.
Tom Cruise's greatest performance ever.
His every performance is greatest performance ( atleast for me ).
His top 3 performances: Born on the Fourth of July, Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia
cant wait to watch it, just downloaded it
Greatest film to the end of Time Period !
such a great example of cinematic genius - once in a blue moon does a film come together this well.
Aimee Mann's soundtrack just amplifies the beauty of this movie... amazing all around
My #1 favorite film of all time. I watch it at least once a year since it came out
I’ve always wanted to see this😢
Been watching a bunch of Tom cruise movies this year and this one is one I really can’t wait to see
Then both Seymour Hoffman and Moore appeared in Mockingjay. BTW RIP Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

Absolute masterpiece
Which is the second song?
Definetely watching this
The best cast ever. No close second
Fantastic trailer for a truly brilliant film.
It is a great trailer. It shows the mood and tone of the movie and it has music that fits well
“We may be through with the past, but the past isn’t through with us.” What a masterpiece.
Paul Thomas Anderson's best movie!
no, el hilo fantama is the best one
sarah abuchar Punch Drunk, Love>>>>
hey, that's shield agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) with the camera at 1:37.
One of the greatest movies ever made. The ONLY part I'd have cut, actually only 2 would be the song and the frogs. You cut those out and you have a perfect movie.
The entire movie is built on the allegory of frogs from Exodus 8:2
@@Simon-pl2zi Not really, PTA didn't realize it was in the bible until someone mentioned it to him and they just started hiding Exodus 8:2 in the movie for fun.
The rain of frogs was however integral to the script from the start.
You couldnt cut the frog part. It IS masterpiece like the insects in the Holly bible
Only read the movie's script so far and haven't watched it yet and gotta say apart from Frank, Jim and Jimmy's characters (who I've already got a glimpse of before), that's totally not what I'd expected those people to look like haha
I saw the film in theaters and bought the shooting script in hard cover from Amazon shortly after. I think Amazon was only selling books back then...and it seemed so futuristic to buy a hard cover SCREENPLAY over the internet and have it MAILED TO YOUR HOUSE! Imagine that! I still have it next to me on my bed stand right now. (I was disappointed in all the typos, but now I find them charming. It was literally the shooting script.)
