  • During conflict, attacking the enemy in an ambush is a devastating advantage. Weapons that could remain undetected until the last moment revolutionized warfare. The caltrop brought down the cavalry when it made entire battlefields impassible. Being able to load and fire a rifle from a lying position made a huge difference in the course of warfare. The land mine was psychologically and physically terrifying. Watch the full documentary series on the evolution of weapons on the Get.factual channel.

it wouldn't be bad if there was a map to show where the hidden mines are

This is a lesson in never knowing the reach of ideas. The caltrop was simple and effective, but it's damage, while lethal, was limited in time and easily removed once peace had come. All you had to do was slowly walk the fields where they were planted, and pick them up in perfect safety.
But now, hidden, long lived symbols of death carry on their bloody purpose, long after the clamor of battle has passed. Would the Romans have cared the road they started the world on? Likely not.
And what paths are we now choosing with AI and drone technology, that may evolve beyond our wildest guesses? Will future wars generate abandoned satellites to somehow be triggered to rain down the fabled death ray on sundry locations? Will a slightly off course Martian-Earth bus line be blown away by dark magnetic mines?
We have no need to fear alien contact. I find it hard to believe that any other evolutionary path could have led to sentient beings of such a never-ending circle of violence and cruelty on a global scale.😢

My theory of caltrops is that most armies in middle ages would rather use the iron and steel for better use ie arms and armour
