Hill House was great, up until the ending. It squandered a great, great opportunity writing wise to capture the horror, but then takes a 180 and squanders what would of been an amazing season.

@@JakeMyerz I can see why the ending would put some off-I think it's cause you don't WANT the ghosts to be real-you want to be left wondering if it's all in there heads. But it leaves you wondering other questions-is the house itself evil, or not? Is Olivia's ghost now malicious or not? The ending tied things up full circle for me so I think it worked.

@@JakeMyerz I agree I didn’t want or really like the ending they gave in s1 because they build us up so much that I didn’t see them ending the show with such a sweet/gentle ending. I wish I could say more. I just was looking for something more powerful like in ep 5 glass window scene. I just personally feel like they held back on Lil parts where they could’ve really scared us even more then they already did.

BE WARNED when you DO get to Haunting of Hill House, it's one of those shows that when the episode ends you think "okay one more...." then THAT episode ends and you go "okay maybe ONE more after this" and before you know it you'll have binged the entire damn thing. Don't watch this before bed you'll never get to sleep for wanting to watch the next episode. BUT I highly recommend that should Jeremy review this, he review it like he did The Boys-episode per episode cause there's SO MUCH to talk about with each single episode. EPSECIALLY Episode 5 "The Bent Neck Lady" and episode 6 "Two Storms".

The issue I had is that Hill House set my expectations for Bly to be more of that. It most definitely was not more of Hill House. I was disappointed by my own expectations but not by the stories execution. To me Hill House is the pinnacle of what horror should be and I guess Bly is the pinnacle of gothic romance, but gothic romance doesn't appeal to me at all.

And despite bly manor being more of the drama series between the two, I still felt like hill house did it better. @Necromorph-chan Yea, even without being disappointed with the horror aspect, there still wasn't much that I liked. I just had so many questions by the end, one them being also whether Dani's fiance was a ghost or not, other things i didnt get was how they permanently tried to possess the kids and all they had to do was think really hard about it??? Also i could not make sense of the timeline at all. And like, why was flora so adamant about miles coming back home? Was it because of the lake lady idk? And especially with the lake lady, i have absolutely no clue how she "connected" with dani and thats what set everyone free but then lake lady still came back for dani, like how does it fit with her story of looking for her child?? Maybe I didnt watch the series right but i was left with so many questions by the end, so again, even without the horror elements, there were still plenty of issues i had with it

The relationships portrayed in Bly Manor felt more fleshed out than the ones in Hill House, which I suppose is a benefit of having a smaller cast. I feel like the majority of characters had solid arcs (with Miles being the least developed imo,) and had narratively satisfying endings (for the adults at least lol) .
Instead of having to focus on the Inter-Familial Bonds of 7 People and childhood trauma, BM explores the ideas of Found Family and the many different forms that romantic love can take. There are similar themes, yes, but the stories are distinct and compelling in their own ways.
I honestly think I was more invested in the characters of BM, villains included, as opposed to HH’s Crane family. Even after rewatching HH 3 times, there are still moments where I want to throttle Steven, Shirley, and Hugh, despite understanding the context behind their decision making.

I honestly loved bly manor and it makes me sad that people are trashing it when comparing it to Hill House. I think it was extremely good in its own way. The way they made you feel like you were stuck in the time loops and memories with the characters was insane. I felt myself grieving with the ghosts in a way that I haven't before. I guess it depends on what your cup of tea is. I feel like comparing the two seasons isn't right since they are so different.

The last episode is slow bc its an honest to goodness denouement and it is perfect. Five minutes an effective denouement does not make. People often complain about feeling hollow after a good movie, show, video game, book etc and I believe part of that is because they rarely dedicate proper time to a good denouement. Ending a story at its most intense moment (or shortly after) only feels curt and unsatisfying. Respect the resolution! Give it proper time!

I think what I find quite lovely about both seasons is how they've tied all the stories in with a theme of a haunted, beloved house...the ghosts within, and of course the main characters and their stories. My home was built in 1875 and she holds many stories and memories. Built by a Civil War soldier...he raised his family in this house, and when he died he was an old man. His wife wrote on the back of a photo of her standing in front of our house, "with my beloved no longer here with me, my time is spent taking care of her". She died exactly one year after her husband. Through 145 years this house has only had 4 families, and they've all had similarities : military, doctors, homemaker, and educators. Like the show, real life is full of love and also tragedy. There was both within these old walls...so much love and laughter and equally, tears shed and lonely hearts. We were drawn to this house for sure. I look forward to growing old with my husband here, leaving an imprint of our memories, taking care of this old house and keeping her stories alive. I love a good show that combines both love and ghosts!

I also think that the story was too predictable and almost cliché in places. Everything was too predictable, nothing shook me, the timeline was hella confusing, I barley connected with any of the characters either, the relationships were not that compelling, the story about the lake lady was nothing but an info dump they squeezed into the second last episode, they barely explored any of the ghosts that came with the house and there was a freaking doll house full of them, the “final battle” with the lake lady made no sense to me and I’m just left with sooo many questions. may never go back. And now there are videos everywhere gushing about How many of the hidden ghosts did you find? That seems like a stunt to me and distracting from the

I just finished Bly Manor and I loved both shows. I think the reason I wasn’t disappointed was because to me Bly Manor wasn’t a direct follow up to Hill House. It wasn’t like this was labeled as season 2 under Hill House. It was under a different title on Netflix. It always felt like it’s own thing. The only connections were that it was made by the same creators and they reused a few of the actors. Plus it says it’s a gothic romance in the description on Netflix so I already knew. Both shows were great in their own right and are completely different to the point where they can’t really be compared because they’re basically two different genres.

As a British person watching this you can tell how American this series is. The list of cultural and continuity errors is long. Kitchen: British kitchens do not have wide chunky ceramic sinks with integrated splash backs. Bathroom: the bath featured which is low and with curved flat-topped sides will not be found in the U.K. Kitchen: The fridge is a wide almost double sized model, hardly ever seen in British homes. A house of this size in the U.K. would never have been kept to such a well-decorated or consistently designed standard. Large old house interiors in the U.K. would normally feature large quantities of handed down furniture, patched up walls, a mixture of eras, and never the flashy wallpaper that’s seen. Generally British owners of such vast places do not have the money to maintain them consistently - there’s always lots of rough edges and half finished jobs. Street scenes: hilariously stereotyped and hopelessly inaccurate for a street supposedly from 1987. The red London bus seen in episode 2 is a pre- Routemaster model, even for 1987 these models weren’t in service. The chapel in the grounds just doesn’t resemble any kind of church you’d see in the U.K. nearly all U.K. churches suffered some form of gothic revival makeover in the Victorian era. This chapel clearly has no such features and is just a studio set. The house exterior itself is not convincing. Whilst you might find some Arts & Crafts referenced homes in Scotland and a few other areas, maybe in south west England, the house featured here just looks wrong for the U.K. There are a mix of styles which don’t add up, and the proportions are curiously suburban for such a large house.

Crimson peak is a horror movie, bly manor is a horror show. The most classic type of horror you can have even. It's the public who seems to expect horror to be a bunch of jumpscares and bland writing, and when they get something deep and real, they can't handle it, cause they wanted a popcorn movie. Bly Manor was far more emotionally devastating than Hill House for me and a lot of people. The way it explored its themes was a lot more impactful by the end. I liked Hill House's ending, but it was the weakest part of the entire show. Bly Manor's ending is viscerally powerful. And I think the mystery was better in Bly as well. But both are great shows.

If you just look past the horror elements(not that they're not good or lacking in any way), this show is soo good. It is essentially a story about people who have experienced love, pain and loss and how they deal with it. There is so much depth and 'gravity' to the show, each episode untying the mystery a little more and by the last two episodes it so overwhelming to take in what happens to the lead characters, you can feel the payoff was much more than you expected.
If you're expecting a show about people stuck in a ghost house, then Hill House would be the right one. If you're interested in learning more about ghosts in the house than the people in it, then Bly Manor.

For someone who had to read and write a critical analysis paper on “Turn of the Screw” which this series seems to be based off of, although rather loosely the more it goes on, I was kinda on the fence. Considering I hated reading every moment of turn of the screw, this is definitely a series that kept my focus

I feel like everyone missed the point here. It’s not a love story and it is a haunting story. Throughout the series you see each character being haunted by their past.
    SPOILERS:
The uncle haunted by what he did to his brother
The American haunted by her ex fiancé
The housekeeper haunted by her husband who left
    Etc.
And by the end of it, they mention that the kids don’t even remember it. Kind of telling you that despite their horrible past they moved on. As almost all the other characters do. No longer haunted by their past. Except one. The narrator!
Calling this a love story, for me, is really an injustice to the show.

I'm going to try and be as spoiler-free as I can as well
Both Haunting Anthology pieces have great things going for them and they definitely can't be compared because they are two very different stories and two very different ways of telling a story
That said I prefer Haunting of Hill House because I didn't leave with as many questions as I did with Bly Manor although both definitely had that emotional connection.
I think Bly Manor could have done a better job of setting up some pieces of the storyline/ fleshing them out more. It almost feels like this season needed two to three more episodes. Some people may disagree with me considering the slow start...
I must say I feel like we didn't have enough time to fully actualize the relationship between Peter and Rebecca I feel like we just got pieces of it and were supposed to fill in the rest of everything with our own imagination. As such, I didn't understand why she had such a strong feeling towards him when he was repeatedly selfish (ok yeah maybe she didn't see how much until the lake) and on that one occasion at least treated her like complete shit when he was being possessive in the room. I realize Hannah said he treated her possessively but we only got one instance of seeing that clearly. I do think that trait of treating her like a possession makes sense considering how he treats objects that aren't his but I guess I just wanted more fleshing out so that the reveal of him coming back to her either would feel more heart-wrenching or less so.
Also, the Lady of the Lake's story was great but I really didn't quite capture the rage they said she had or why after what happens in the last episode she delays her reappearance (trying to be vague here).
Ok now here's just some personal preference I have for what I wished to have seen for the fleshing of the plot line: maybe Peter starts acting possessive but after Rebecca puts him in his place he starts to change his ways and truly expresses and shows that he doesn't want her to be a possession and that she's free to choose what she wants and how grateful he is that she chooses him. I think that would show nicely that for once he didn't have to try and take what he wanted that what he wanted came to him and that he earned it. And is worthy of it.
I wanted a bit more with Sir Henry Wingrave and that duality that he had. Restricting it to the short time-space that they did I feel like was a wasted opportunity. Just give us a bit more of seeing him try to go about his days and or maybe a scene when he was driving over to Bly Manor as well with that duality of character.
Okay before I go into a novel-length response I will conclude here LOL

@@jaydenfoyewa Basically what Jeremy said. It was misleading as a ghost story. There were some redeeming qualities and the first few episodes were intriguing, my favorite part of the show being “story time”. But as the episodes went on it was just more and more romance filler. The show is based on “The Turn of the Screw” which I haven’t read but judging by the synopsis it doesn’t have all the dour love story stuff in it, which seemed to get more prevalent as the show went on. I mean the final episode was like thirty minutes of lovers tending to their garden shop. I found Hill House pretty boring too, tbh, but at least the final climax was ghost related instead of like, a marriage proposal. I think you could have cut out a few hours of content if you removed the romance and exposition (keeping the background story of lady in the lake which was important) the rest of it didn’t really need to be there IMO and I found myself waiting for the horror plot to progress, but it kept getting pushed to the outside of some relationships that, while developed, i still didn’t find interesting.
