If I may contribute to this Homeward Bound deep dive, there's actually a Batman reference in that film when Chance (Michael J. Fox) is riding in the car, head out the window with his ears flapping in the wind saying "Batdog!" Much obliged for jarring that memory loose fellas.

Here's the actual Tim Burton quote "Anybody who knows me knows I would never read a comic book written by Kevin Smith."

Burton loved Batman growing up because he loved the dark nature and the split duality if hiding his inner pain. One of his favorite comics was The Killing Joke which Batman 89 took a lot of inspiration from. Also Keaton and Burton had to read The Dark Knight Returns and Year One for resource while everyone else had to read the silver age comics. During one interview with Burton he praised TDKR and Killing Joke for going back to the darker stories of Batman and exploring the psychological nature of the character we had never seen. Kevin Smith is a hypocritical fraud who isn't the most trust worthy guy to believe especially with his awful He-Man show.

@@brandonspain12345 you see, Tim Burton was a fan of Batman 66, starring Adam West and Burt Ward. He, Akiva Goldsman, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jim Carrey, and Alicia Silverstone love Batman 66. Silverstone is also a fan of Batman 89, Batman Returns, and Batman Forever. Goldsman is a fan of Batman 89 as well. Jon Peters, Joel Schumacher, Christopher Nolan, Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito, and Tommy Lee Jones were fans of Batman. Arnold Schwarzenegger saw Batman Returns in the movie theater as DeVito invited Schwarzenegger to the premiere. Val Kilmer visited the set of Batman 66 as a young boy when he sits in the George Barris Batmobile. Burton loved Killing Joke. Schumacher love Batman Year One. And Nolan love Batman The Man Who Falls.

These concept art sometimes makes me wish Tim Burton would make a stop motion Batman movie instead. Maybe with the help of Henry Selick. Love your guys' work as always.

Let's just think about the fact that Tim Burton in 1985 would have been in his late twenties. How wild is that imagine that such a young filmmaker had the reigns on such a big property.

I'm 20 and haven't gotten a job yet and meanwhile, Burton animated with Disney, made the biggest blockbuster of the 80s, the best comedy of all time like Pee-wee and Beetlejuice in his 20s. What am I doing with my life!?! 😭

Hello guys. How I missed those videos about 89's drafts, or any of the 90's Batman saga's drafts, fascinating stuff! This is gonna be a fun one! Keep them coming.

Although I have never had it confirmed, Tim Burton's art style is quite similar to that of Quentin Blake and I have often wondered if he was an influence. Mr Blake is probably best known for his illustrations in the excellent books by Ninja-enthusiast Roald Dahl, his earlier stories are pretty dark and macabre with a cheery overtone, right up Burton's street! Another brilliant show Bendrew:)

Look up the background behind her creation.

Me too. When I watch the Poison Ivy episodes in BTAS (including the one when she friends with Harley Quinn) and I thought they're terrific. I don't like Uma Thurman's portrayal of Poison Ivy in Batman & Robin (because she can't act) and Schumacher would've cast Julia Roberts in the role (because he worked with her on Flatliners and Dying Young) or Sharon Stone.

Unfortunately Kevin Smith has lost credibility since he was revealed to have lied over the He-man revival cartoon for Netflix. I'm more inclined to Believe Tim Burton over Kevin Smith.

2022's diversity: ginger characters are played by black people.

The audio needs equalizing. There's no ideal volume level because either Andrew's too loud or Ben's too quiet.

I remember seeing the Burton concept art in the Topps Batman trading cards and thinking it was so cool.
Well, Burton, being the director of the movie, had every right to include more detailed descriptions in this treatment.

Thanks for the shout out boys! Still listening and still enjoying the show. Great work! Loving the Batman 1989 stuff 😁 I have a book called The Art Of Tim Burton and I'm near sure a lot of his sketches and drawings for both his Batman films are included in it. I must check it out.

Seeing the Tim Burton drawings of The Joker with the crazy hair I remember Jack Nicholson talking about a story about a disagreement with Tim about wearing a wig as The Joker with Jack complaining that it would look too much like a “fright wig” and ultimately got his way. This must be how he was originally going to look. I just noticed looking at it that it kinda has a bat shape to it.

Great episode! Really enjoyed the fan comments you covered. Interesting note on Ra's and the influence of the Tomb of Dracula and potentially Dr. Fu Manchu. I've discussed in DM's with you guys on how Christopher Lee would have been a fan casting for Ra's al Ghul in the original Burtonverse. I can see the influence on Palance to Ra's al Ghul, though I actually really do like him as Grissom and glad he was able to play that role. Jack Kirby himself did say Darkseid was based on him. Palance himself played Dracula once as well. If given the choice though, I would rather keep Palance as Grissom than to have him as Ra's al Ghul. He is one of the few actors I could see be Jack Nicholson's boss and he really nailed it. He's a great villain in Shane, Oklahoma Crude, among others. Thanks again for the episode!
