    hello Anthony! thank you for making this video! this helped me a lot... but what i dont understand is what the meaning of the variables in the expression.. like fs+qr-fr-qs.... what do they mean? i know they are the symbols used to express a number... what i mean is what do they mean in numbers? pls reply

    • @MashupMath
      @MashupMath  8 лет назад +6

      +Rapples Oabel Thanks for the comment! Think of each variable as representing a number. For example, if f=3, s=7, r=2, and q=8, then fs+qr would represent (3)(7)+(8)(2). If you are not told what the numbers are, then you have to leave them as variables. For example, if you were using h to represent someone's height, h=5 for someone who is 5 feet tall and h=6 for someone who is 6 feet tall, etc. Does that help? -Anthony :)

    Hello, for the switch word “than” does it apply to just subtraction? Or addition as well?

    • @scottgreen3679
      @scottgreen3679 3 года назад +2

      It applies to addition as well! However, because addition is commutative it doesn't affect the solution to the expression. Example: 2+3 = 5 and 3+2 = 5. But 2-3 = -1 and 3-2 = 1.

    Thanks a lot. Please help settle this between me and my teacher: Q Write the algebraic expression for the statement: y squared minus the sum of six times y and four.
    My Ans: y² - (6y + 4)
    My Teacher's Ans: y² - 6(y+4)
    Thank you

    • @JAS_Arcilla
      @JAS_Arcilla 2 года назад

      I'll try to answer it. So basically you' have three terms. You're answer is wrong because you need to add y and four first. That's why it is separated.

    • @fosela7659
      @fosela7659 2 года назад

      Thanks for your explanation. But don't you think then the question should have read : y squared minus six times the sum of y and 4 rather?

    • @JAS_Arcilla
      @JAS_Arcilla 2 года назад

      That's why it said "The sum of six times y and 4" not "The sum of six times y plus four. I think it is referring to the fact that if we said and, we're gonna do both of it that's why it is seperated. Sorry my explanation is bad I am still at 1st year high school

    • @fosela7659
      @fosela7659 2 года назад
