  • How can an organization profiting from whale hunting simultaneously advocate for conserving whales?
Thank you to the courageous @anahita.earth from @last_whaling_station for reminding them that it’s 2024, and in an era of global environmental change, discussing the killing of whales shouldn’t even be considered.
Heard of NAMMCO? The opening line on their website is ‘Marine Mammals are Resources’ and the sole reason for their existence is to make hunting of marine mammals socially acceptable.
If an organisation exists purely to encourage hunting, the production of abundance estimates by that organisation is biased and these numbers should be questioned, not just accepted.
Yet at the NAMMCO Annual Meeting being held in Reykjavik this week, the IWC opening statement spoke of closer co-operation and new procedures that allow abundance estimates produced by NAMMCO to be adopted swiftly by the IWC. Not one mention was made of the IWC position on commercial whaling.
Other member party opening statements mainly consisted of self-congratulating soundbites on the ability to use science to justify the killing of whales.
Hunting of large whales can not be achieved humanly and questions around sustainability are simply a distraction from the main issue. So it doesn’t matter how many themed sessions NAMMCO run on welfare issues in marine mammal hunting, the facts will remain the same.
It’s time for commercial whaling to end!
