ScoutCrafter hey scout I love you work and you remind me of my dad when he restored old tools but he past away of cancer and I been watching your videos every other day. I would to send you a Christmas gift for you to have and restore. I hope you get to see my message
What a truly useful video. Your output is always outstanding but this step by step was extra useful as each step was plainly explained. The resulting wrench was beautiful.
Well Scout that was perhaps the best tutorial you ever did. Everything was explained so it was understandable to all the viewers. I know that the more experienced restorers would find it a little long but novices like myself loved it. Like I told you once before, you’re the teacher we are the students. You are such a good hearted person doing that for that fella. God bless you and get well soon!
Hi Scoutcrafter, it is good to hear that you are on the mend. I know you were worried about duplicate content, but the Billing Bicycle Wrench never gets old. That was a great tutorial, I am going to borrow your idea to use the quick grip to hold my belts, what a great idea. Take it easy and get well. Cheers
Really enjoyed this video. Answered several question that I had also. You do excellent work and I enjoy every time you explain what you are doing. I am always interested in learning new skills. Preserving tools and history is an essential skill
Sorry to hear about your kidney stones. Hope you start feeling better very soon. (David, I'm super jealous. Wish I had a Billings wrench - and a Scoutcrafter restoration. You lucky man!)
Ben, I'm definitely lucky. I'm surprised it happened. My response to Tara's question of what I'd like for Xmas was said half-jokingly, even. She immediately got to work, as I later found out!
Another great restoration. Thanks for all the explanation because I'm one of your new viewers. One really cringes when you see a tool that's been hammered. A few months ago one of the home improvement shows on television had an electrician putting in an extra outlet and he was hammering nails on with the side of his lineman's pliers. Ouch. - Kathie
Hi Kathie! There is an old saying that says "Tools are meant to be used" and people took that as saying "Do whatever you have to just get the job done" some things are more accepted then others to me... However I don't turn wrenches for a living so I have the option to take an extra 5 minutes to get the right tool... People on the job usually are rushed for one reason or another... For people like us who love tools it's so hard to watch! LOL Thanks Kathie!!!!!!
I enjoyed the how to! Careful - you're going to start getting more mail than Santa! (you'll have to hire some elves) Luckily I've never had kidney stones, but I hear that little stone feels more like one of the heads off of Mt Rushmore when you're trying to pass it!
Hello 357MD! You know I always thought the pain was at the end where it comes out, the real pain is in the back just below the rib cage! Like a muscle cramp that doesn't go away! No joke! LOL Thanks N!
Glad you're recovering Scout! I was looking for a Billings wrench recently during a visit to a South Carolina flea market and passed on one that I thought was defective. The hammer head face (if that's what it is) extended about a sixteenth of an inch longer than the fixed jaw face making it appear misaligned. I'm beginning to think they were designed liked this. Your tutorial helped educate me on what to look for in buying my first restoration project wrench. Thanks!
Helo Chris! Yes! The funny thing is depending on the price and shape... For $10 we will give it a shot, but for $40 I want a pristine wrench! Meanwhile I will put 5 hours labor into the $10 wrench! LOL Go figure! Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!
Bought a Billings Bicycle Wrench after watching your video. It was identical, except for a mystery hole below the knurl wheel. The "holed Billings" apparently a later version that peened the threaded portion so it could not be easily taken apart. After a tedious vise clamping/unclamping procedure, I got the threaded portion past the knurl wheel. I filed the peen marks out and now it works as smoothly as this earlier version. I risked damaging the knurls' interior thread, but it worked great. It would be nice to see Scoutcrafter take on one of the peened version. Would he drill or not through that hole. 😂
Sorry to hear about the kidney stone - glad you seem to be doing well though. Taking the time to go through every detail like this had really helped me out. You answered a lot of questions that will really help us newbies out from the removal of the sander "brace" behind the belt to the type of buffing compound this is 5 star video!
Sorry to hear you are not feeling well but I hope you get better soon. Really great tutorial that answered a lot of my questions. Thanks for taking the time to share this.
Picked up some good tips, thanks. Hope you're doing better, stones are very painful so don't worry, we won't go into withdrawal if you have to miss a few days . Best wishes for a speedy recovery. John
Beautiful work as always! I'm keeping my eyes open for one of these bicycle wrenches myself. You're a hell of a guy to do this for a viewer. Take a break, relax, and get well soon!
Hello Sal! They made countless numbers of these and really they don't get thrown out so they are still floating around everywhere! =) Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!
Take care Scout! Hope you feel better soon! Really great of you to still upload this very educational video, it is much appreciated. Take your time to recover and rest.
Even though I've been watching for awhile, there were a number of little clarifications that I found helpful. Great video. Thanks very much for taking this approach Scout.
Hello Frank! I am so glad! You know sometimes we tend to take things for granted and not explain them all the way! (I am very guilty of that) so these FAQ videos help! Thanks so much Frank!!!!
Great video. Answered a lot of questions I was actually going to ask! Your videos got me to start cleaning some of my wife's grandfathers old hand tools he used throughout his life on his farm. Hope to pass down those tools and the skills to keep them working to my son! Merry Christmas and get well soon!
That is so great! Nothing beats restoring a tool that belonged to a family member! I am so glad you are taking the time to restore them! Thanks very much for the well wishes!!!!
Hello Robert! Yikes! That is much worse then a KS! I'm so glad you are on the mend! Thank God for all the new treatments they have today! Stay strong Robert! Thanks!!!!!!!
Another excellent restoration! The instructional portion is an added bonus and I'm sure it'll help others who are just starting to restore things. I've been lucky to have never experienced a kidney stone but understand they're extremely painful so I'm glad you're on the mend. If you want to watch a hilarious video about kidney stones search '2018 - just the stone'. It's a nine minute segment of a much longer comedy performance by Bill Engvall and hopefully it'll make you laugh.
I have lucked out three times so far with kidney stones, that I know of. Passed one that was 4.09mm this summer and a couple in the 2mm range here in the last few months. Add lemon to your water is what my Doc said. He showed me his that was a little over 6mm, and that one put him in the hospital for a couple days. Mine was actually sent to the lab for testing and it turned out to be a normal 'midwestern' calcium stone. I've heard enough horror stories that I drink lots of water and real lemonade now. Another beautifully done Billings wrench by the way, he's sure to be a happy camper for a long time.
Hello HKF!!! 6mm! Nice! LOL You can wear that as a badge of honor passing one that size! It's funny how many people here have also had them! It kind of makes me nervous thinking god forbid that happened on a plane! =O Thanks so much!!!!!
Ugh, kidney stones are no joke. I had my gall bladder go bad on me, had a golf ball sized gall stone! Get well soon. Great video as always. I enjoyed the different brushes and buffing wheels you showed. You really have to get different wheels to try. I like those bike wrenches! I have the Harbor Freight 1X30 sander. It works good, smoked a bearing but other than that it's my workhorse. Keep the video's coming!
always wonder what those two buffing wheels are for! now i know more. SC, you are always making me learn more and more. would love to see a video on how to add a patina to a new or old tool to give it a nice look.
Thank you for the lesson on the different wire wheels. Yes, I've been gone for a while. I had lots of people visiting and lots of other distractions but I should be around more often now. :)
My Heartfelt Condolences, ScoutCrafter! My ex-wife had gall stones, and she said the pain was worse than childbirth! She was doubled over and crying, so I have an acute sense of what you must have gone through! May you remain stone-free from now on. What you did for David and Tara was SO NICE - and Very Christmas-y!
Oh man that is one of my biggest fears. Hope you get better soon and dont have to go through it again. Another great video. Liked the info on buffing compounds.
Get Well soon..especially for the Holidays...I really love this wrench... great instructional information on wire-brushes...Happy Holidays to you and viewers..
Glad that your kidney stone episode is over and you are on the mend. I been lucky so far. but I understand that stones are more painful than child birth. As usual, what I wonderful restoration, you are truly a good person and a fine craftsman.
Beautiful restoration of that Billings wrench!! We even got to see the Dake prove its worth again!! Great instructional video also. I hope your doing well after your kidney stone episode. I know how painful they are!! I had one a few years back and wound up in the hospital also. When it started to pass on it's own, it was so painful I just wanted to die. I never want to experience that again. Since you're a vegetarian, you need to watch out for foods that are high in oxalic acid (if that's the type of stone you had). Lots of water and try to add some lemon juice to the water. Not too much or it'll wear away the enamel on your teeth over time. It's always something that'll get ya!! Take care and be well. It was a wonderful thing you did for David.
Hello Steve! It's amazing how many people had these! I hope the worst is over, I've been off the pain meds today just using a heating pad... I was going to just tough it out but my GF came over and said there's a new sheriff in town and made me go... I told her I liked the old sheriff better.., LOL Thanks Steve!!!!!!!
MAAAAAAN I've had small kidney stones on top of a UTI before. I have a pretty good idea how much of an ordeal that was. Sending up a prayer for a speedy recovery. On a brighter note, those Billings wrenches are SOOOO satisfying to restore.
Hello Allan! Oh man a UTI with a Stone is a whole different mess! I bet you were on a bunch of meds then! You are so right about the Billings wrenches, when they are done it's very satisfying!!!
Long story short, I was at a bad hospital that missed diagnosing the UTI the first time. It was 2 weeks old then and it went for 2 more weeks. I ended up with nothing more than a basic antibiotic and mild pain meds. It took about a week before I could get up and walk around again.
@@drstrangefart OMG! They told me at the hospital that you don't play with infections during a KS attack! They took a urine sample right then and there! Glad your over that!!!!
That had to have been back in 2010. I went in and they took a sample and did imaging then said it was small kidney stones and sent me home. It kept getting worse so I went back two weeks later. The doctor I saw then said they found and documented bacteria on the first sample and didn't bother to mention it or prescribe antibiotics. I can't really articulate my thoughts on the subject without an abundance of profanities.
ScoutCrafter really enjoy your vids. Hope you are feeling better now. You take care of yourself and get well. Holiday Greetings from snowy southern VA!
Thanks for answering all these questions I didn't even realized I don't know the answer too or I should ask. Now I Know what to do With my failing cloth dryer, I fixed 3 times. Luckily the motor still turns -DIY bench grinder project added to the list😉. Thanks for your answers and videos. Feel well soon. Happy holidays... diYotam Ch
Hope you recover quick we are praying for you. God bless you family and friends keep up the good work. beautiful job on that wrench I'm sure they'll love it
Glad you are well. Check out the squirrel behind you coming down the tree. My younger brother has been through that a couple of times. Years ago, I passed what I thought was a kidney stone. When the nurse showed me what passed , I thought she was kidding. I was the size of a small grain of sand. Oh well Merry Christmas. Ken
Hello Kenneth! The funny thing is that you think with this amount of pain it will be the size of a marble! =) I'm glad you passed yours! Thanks!!!!!!!!
And thank you for posting a "newbie" instructional video. Explaining how to use the various bits of equipment and putting it in a standalone video makes it much easier to find amongst your hundreds of videos! BTW, you do use a saw blade to clean the compound off the buffing wheel, right? (I thought I saw that in one of your recent videos).
Hello NN! Yes, as long as you don't load up the wheel with too much compound you won't have a problem! Especially since we usually always use the same type compound. (Black) I hardly ever have to clean the wheel... Thanks NN!!!!!!!
I passed a stone 25+years ago, the size of 2 grains of sand, not kidding. I thought I was stabbed. Excruciating pain from my bladder on out, pretty good bruising. I am sorry to hear of your suffering.
Nice job, as usual ... I hope you're feeling better day by day. Kidney stones aren't much fun. Don't ask me how I know. By the way, after I heard your remarks, I tested my "brass" wire wheel with a magnet. It turned out also to be mysteriously magnetic.
I am glad your OK!! My friend, I did that kidney stone thing about ten years ago. My only ambulance ride, ever. I never had pain like that! I'm betting you thought the pain would pass. I thought it would and That was my mistake...I shoulda gone in right away!!! I feel for you !!! I'm glad you're out of the woods!! If it helps....I've never had an issue with it since my first time!!
Hi Bill! I was in so much pain a trip to the hospital was out of the question! So for 14 hours I just bit the leather! LOL Then after some ibuprofen I was able to stand and go to the hospital. I'm glad I did because they measured it and saw I was passible! Thanks so much Bill!!!!!!
@@ScoutCrafter I live with pain every day, no meds and I've never experienced anything like those damned kidney stones. They literally dropped me to the floor. If there is a next time for you, and I hope there isn't, EMTs carry a med that begins to dissolve the stones pretty quickly. Dont go through the pain , if you can help it. Take it easy and stay hydrated!
Another fantastic video Re kidney stones I had some a couple of years ago Felt like a scalpel was been drawn across my back. Glad your ok mate and keep posting
Hello Gordon! Yes! I always thought the pain was as we pass them thru the penis, I had no idea the real pain was in the back!!!!! Holy Cow! LOL Thanks!!!!!!!!!
Hello, I'm Jhon but I changed the name of the channel, in fact my name is Juan Luis. Excellent video, thank you very much for this master class, although I do not understand English very well, I understand some things 😀. Greetings from Valencia Spain
Hello Richard! Thanks for your service my brother! I know how much we were told to hydrate back then but it was impossible to keep up! I was STA. PLT. Our motto was "Travel light, Freeze at night" LOL Good times! Thanks Richard!!!!!!!
Hey ScoutCrafter, hope you feel better soon. Another great video/restoration. I really appreciate you taking the time to go thru all the steps required. I have a question - would you use a degreaser first, as not to con terminate your wire wheel? Vaughn
Hello Vaughn! Yes! I learned the hard way years ago being lazy I would take a greasy or dirty wrench to the wire wheel and it would work at first but the oil dirt and grease would wind up on and in the wheel and transfer to every other tool I did... It pays to always get any oil, grease or caked dirt off the tool before using the wire wheel. A degreaser work great! This Billings had hardly any oil or grease just dried rust, I just wiped it down with alcohol. In the long run it really pays off! Thanks Vaughn!!!!!
David is so thrilled for this. You put some serious work into this piece. You’re so appreciated! Merry Christmas, Scout! Get well soon!
Hello Tara! I am so happy David likes the wrench! That was so nice of you to do that for him... Merry Christmas! =)
ScoutCrafter hey scout I love you work and you remind me of my dad when he restored old tools but he past away of cancer and I been watching your videos every other day. I would to send you a Christmas gift for you to have and restore. I hope you get to see my message

I'm so glad you found the video useful! Those Billings are a must have! A 100 year old wrench that still is great! Thanks so much!!!!

That's one good sherif! Take some well deserved time off and rest.
Hope your doing better pal and well done, you deserve a Merry Christmas for all the work for sure!
Hello CPTK! Thanks so much! I really appreciate that!!!!!!
nice job, as always. I hope you are free of all of the stones and feel better soon!
Hello Jeff! Thanks so much! Hopefully soon! =)
Nice one Scout,get well soon!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😆
Thanks so much Alan!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks scout love the simple explanations. Good luck with the stones! I've had em and was told the pain is worse than child birth.
Hello Loxxxton! LOL I heard that too! It was about the worst I ever had... Thanks very much!!!!!!
@@ScoutCrafter A girl I went to school said she had 2 stones and 2 kids and would take the kids any day.
ScoutCrafter really enjoy your vids. Hope you are feeling better now. You take care of yourself and get well. Holiday Greetings from snowy southern VA!
Hello MS! Can't believe the snow you got! Wow! Hope you are enjoying it! Thanks so much!!!!!!!
Glad you are home and doing better .
Thanks so much Iwood1!
Get well soon. You make it look easy but anyone who tries this knows how much work is involved. I'm sure they will be thrilled with the results.
Hello Bernie! The Billings are always nice wrenches, they were just classic. Thanks so much!
@@ScoutCrafter I'd like to find one for a buddy of mine who is a bicyclist.

Hello Yotam! Years ago when we saw a washer or dryer thrown out we wold pull the motor! Most times they were good! Excellent!!!!!!!!! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!
Great info!

Hello Reynaldo! Thanks so much my friend!!!!!!!!!!
@@ScoutCrafter AMEN GODBLESS YOU AND FAMILY
Wishing you a speedy recovery and a Great Christmas.
Hello Mats! Thanks so much my friend!!!!!!!!!
Thanks NN!!!!!!!
...OUCH,OUCH,OUCH... a speedy recovery for you and the wrench...
Hello Bob! Thanks so much! Much appreciated!!!!!!!
Well damn, didn't know you did requests, I got this tracto..... ;) Hope your recovery goes well John, great video!
Hello Steve! LOL! Actually Tractors are a real love of mine! =) Thanks so much!!!!
Great video and lots of info !
Hope you recover well buddy :)
Thanks so much Tony!!!!!!! =)
I passed a stone 25+years ago, the size of 2 grains of sand, not kidding.
I thought I was stabbed. Excruciating pain from my bladder on out, pretty good bruising.
I am sorry to hear of your suffering.
Hello Mark! I hope it passes easier then the drop from the Kidney!!!!! Thanks so much!!!!!
Nice job, as usual ... I hope you're feeling better day by day. Kidney stones aren't much fun. Don't ask me how I know.
By the way, after I heard your remarks, I tested my "brass" wire wheel with a magnet. It turned out also to be mysteriously magnetic.
Hello Carver! LOL! Magnetic Brass!? Who knew! =) They work well though! I just wish they didn't try to trick us! =) Thanks so much!!!!
Another fantastic video
Re kidney stones I had some a couple of years ago
Felt like a scalpel was been drawn across my back.
Glad your ok mate and keep posting
Hello Gordon! Yes! I always thought the pain was as we pass them thru the penis, I had no idea the real pain was in the back!!!!! Holy Cow! LOL Thanks!!!!!!!!!
Great video!
I hope you feel better soon.👍
Thanks so much Paul! Much appreciated!!!!
Scout is a miracle worker
Hello John! This wrench did come out very nicely in the end! Thanks so much!!!!!
Hello, I'm Jhon but I changed the name of the channel, in fact my name is Juan Luis.
Excellent video, thank you very much for this master class, although I do not understand English very well, I understand some things 😀.
Greetings from Valencia Spain
Hello Juan! I took Spanish for 4 years and still can't speak it! LOL I'm so glad you enjoy the videos!! Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!
Hoping you are feeling better. Take care of yourself. Looking forward to your next video
Thanks so much Chris!!!!
My condolences. I came home from Desert Storm with kidney stones. They fortunately flushed out. Good Video.
Hello Richard! Thanks for your service my brother! I know how much we were told to hydrate back then but it was impossible to keep up! I was STA. PLT. Our motto was "Travel light, Freeze at night" LOL Good times! Thanks Richard!!!!!!!
Glad you're healthy again. Stones suck I hear. Cranberry juice! But we got the dake, a post wire brush eval....wheel tour.......life is good!
Thank you ScoutCraftet. 👍🏼👍🏼
No Sr stones been there done that. These wrenches atre pretty cool i now have a few of them. Good job hope you feel better. 👍
Hello Bert! LOL Been there done that! No need for another round! =) I can see how you feel! Thanks Bert!
