Observation About Travel Throughout NL vs Other Countries

- Travel throughout the NL feels very congruent.
No matter what city I'm in, or part of the NL I'm in, I always know I'm in the NL if that makes sense. I know in comparison to other countries the NL is quite small but this is very interesting to experience.

The distance between Haarlem and Amsterdam is only 22km. No wonder they are very alike.

Yeah sure, Scheveningen is like Amsterdam, Rotterdam is like Den Haag, Almere is like Venlo. And Arnhem is like Hilversum. And Giethoorn is like Middelburg. Ridiculous statement.

Yeah true. Those two cities are more alike. But Den Haag and Rotterdam are more different. Or Groningen and Maastricht are nowere near alike. So,... Nope. Sorry. No hard feelings.

Been in Rotterdam a lot. If you visit the neighborhoods outside the centre it just looks like neighborhoods in Amsterdam, where I live. I don't see any difference.

Germany and Spain are made of historically separated regions stuck together as countries, while the Netherlands is just one region (with the usual disputes between local Counts, Dukes and so on).
Exactly. Spain doesn't really exist. Andalusia is different from Galicia and Asturias is different from Castille and Leon. It's all different regions stuck together in one country.
That's what you get when a country is incredibly small.

Yep! Although I do think that Maastricht does feel different from say - Rotterdam. The Albert Heijn and some of the bike paths remind me I'm in the Netherlands.
I very much do NOT agree. You've clearly not been traveling through The Netherlands, only Holland. A BIG difference from the rest of the country.

Of course there are a lot of similarities between Dutch cities.They are geographically very close together and have mostly been part of the same political and economical entity for more than 400 years, often longer. You shouldn't compare Munich to Frankfurt but to for instance Nuremberg. Difficult though after all that bombing in WW2 and subsequent reconstruction.
Spain and Germany are much bigger countries. The Netherlands is really small. So it is probably easier to have more congruence in policies, facilities etc.
It’s easy to identify a city as Dutch, that doesn’t mean they are all the same. I think that’s not so hard to grasp, but looking at the reactions, I might be wrong 😂
As a very shallow observation, it's not entirely incorrect.
Some cities to me defs feel different, like when comparing big randstad cities (most notably Amsterdam and Rotterdam) to smaller non-randstad cities or villages. But really, I love this. I remember coming back from holiday in France as a kid and the moment we crossed the border of the Netherlands it immediately felt like home because there's a lot of similarities. No need to be actually home to already get that feeling.
I agree sometimes I wish every city center wasn't the same with the same stores even.
Go a weekend to Maastricht and then go a weekend to Almere. Then revisit this clip
You're very right. For something different, you have to go to Rotterdam (which has seen a strong German influence) or a car city like Lelystad (mostly build in the 1970s and 1980s).
I find this quiet a shallow observation. Surely In Maastricht traffic signs and roads all other kinds of infrastructure are everywhere the same in the Netherlands. Also the shopping center looks the same: the same Hema, the same Blokker, the same Wibra, and so and so on. But if you went in to the Jeker kwartier in Maastricht, you would quickly find out that it's completely different from Haarlem.
I have lived for 24 years in Haarlem and after that I have lived and worked for about 15 years in Maastricht, and I quickly found out that it's completely different. Really nothing is the same. Those are two totally different cultures.
I once went on a trip from Flevoland to South-Holland with my friends. We were traveling on our mopeds and I just followed where my friends were going. At a certain point I thought that we accidently teleported to a different country or somehow somewhere took the wrong turn. I just couldn't figure it out. Turns out we were going through the Bijlmer. 🤣

The differences Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague are as big as the Spanish cities you mentioned. And then there are cities like Maastricht, Eindhoven, Apeldoorn that are completely different from cities like Almere, Tilburg or Zoetermeer. So yeah, your 'observation' is completely wrong. Some cities that share are common history do like alike. But this counts for cities in other countries too.
Have you been to Groningen or Leeuwarden? Think you will see a different vibe there.
The Netherlans is more like a large city then a small country sometimes.
Also, as a Dutch person, Groningen feels just as at home as Rotterdam, cuz all the streets are just designed in the same cozy friendly way, unlike other (car-centric) cities like in America or spain/france (except the city centers usually)

Very true. That's one of the reasons why we often find it hard to answer when tourists ask us about things to do here. Obviously there's the major tourist attractions like the Keukenhof, Madurodam, etc, but whenever someone asks me what they really need to see in places like The Hague or Rotterdam, I can never quite come up with an answer.
That said, if you're still in the Netherlands, I highly recommend going to Leiden at some point. It's a vibe.
For me, part of it is that while the cities might be somewhat similar, I think there's an aspect of there also just being so much to do on the small scale and that scale can make the things feel hidden. Like going to a big nature park in many places is basically a walking experience (nothing wrong with that). But go to Amsteredam Bos and it becomes do you want to walk the trails? Go on the rope course there? See the animals? Go to the goat farm? Meanwhile, over in Vondelpark, you have regular music, the various cafes, the tennis courts, the kiddie kitchen.
Any one given place will have several things to do so you kinda just have to 'pick something' you're interested in doing and seeing if it's available near you; opening up Google maps and zipping around; and if it's just "I want to see stuff and take pictures", even that's just like... okay, pick a neighborhood and just start walking cause every neighborhood will actually have it's own little flavor.
I think also you do have to get away from the city centers to see a bit more variation. They want to maintain the historical character of many places so that's going to look pretty consistent. But you head to Amsterdam Zuid or over towards Artis, and to me they start to feel fairly different.
