WDIV was seen on cable in Sitka, Alaska along with Scripps Howard’s WXYZ at the time viewers in Alaska got to see the opening of the Zilwaukee Bridge on their newscasts. However both WDIV and WXYZ were on cable in Alaska using Cancom’s signal.
Used to be a small drawbridge, but rich executives didn't like the delay from their sailboat masts. We drove past that bridge the night before it collapsed
Huh? It was built because sand, grain and stone freighters required the drawbridge to open hundreds of times a year, causing horrendous I-75 backups. It opened 964 times in 1979, the year construction started. Drawbridges don't belong on a freeway! And it didn't "collapse." One span that wasn't yet connected at both ends sagged because of overweight construction loads.

I remember this during the construction during I would say 1978? Or earlier. These pictures are later if course.
Groundbreaking for the bridge was on Oct. 12, 1979.
Some say Jimmy Hoffa may have ended up in the cement of this bridge. Hmmm
I don't think so. Hoffa disappeared 4 years before construction started.
I remember driving over the old draw bridge and seeing the new one being built. It was a sh*t show of construction woes.
So in essence.....you're old as Dirt lmao.....
