Yeah it was quite happening Glam rock took off then, also reggae also went to school with Quite a few West Indian lads, and used play on mates chopper bike on the common behind Groombridge road ,and swimming at the lido in Victoria Park which is no longer there, and pie and mash down Roman road good old days.
I grew up here at Parkside Estate from 1956 until moving in 1976 and used to go Lauriston primary school (converted into posh flats) next to your secondary school until 1969, my parents married in the church shown. It's great to see the streets where I had a Sunday paper round. I see the Convent school (corner of Banbury Rd and Vicky Park Rd) has become blocks of flats, I remember feeling scared delivering along there on dark mornings as it was told to us kids that the place was haunted! My mum had a friend who lived in Groombridge Rd who always used say that she lived the common end I reckon you will know what she meant! Happy days long before the area became "Gentrified" .....Victoria Park Village what a joke, but probably adds thousands to the property values.
It seems all the trees in London (or at least East London) seems to have been hacked something awful. All along the streets. How frequently does this happen??
I was born at 19 speldhurst rd on 23 April 1950 and went to orchard primary and then south hackney secondary modern. Barry Jones
