you do realize that being poor isn't a crime, many good paying jobs don't require a degree, and many are happier with a simpler life than living in a city. so poor is only affecting if you forget the better parts of life. Faith and family. This type of life makes one hard working, resourceful, and having the ability to deal with what comes. Better than most city folk.
I'm a Hoosier in my sixties, this comment is a fantasy. I still work in a factory and am not remarkable in any way. Our state is and has always been an absolute embarrassment! Indiana has produced some of the most admired people in U.S. history. NO thanks to a rotten and no good state government!
Crawford County doesn't surprise me, as it consists mostly of Hoosier National Forest land. Very beautiful area. Neighboring Perry County is pretty and peaceful as well, nice hills and forest lands in this,area

My hometown is Terre Haute, although now in Decatur IL. Vigo County has been pronounced V(eye)-go for many decades, however the 2 high schools are pronounced North and South Vee-go. I was a student of North when it first opened in Sept. 1971 and I remember all the adults talking about how it should be pronounced like the founders name...since the county name had been mis-pronounced for so long!! 😂
Let's not leave out the Federal Wage for Tipped Employees:$2.13/hour (regardless of duties) To be paid TWO DOLLARS & some change one only needs to earn $30 in 30 days from tips.
More important to note is that the STATE may set their own minimum wages as long as they don't go below Federal. Considering our state track record for not supporting its work force...I have zero doubt our wages will only increase due to Federal standards.
I've visited 8 of 10 of those counties on my bicycle travels over the past 25 years, some of them several times. There is one Indiana county of which I've said several times, "This is not where Indiana keeps its money." It didn't make your list. But it's an interesting enough county to visit, and I've ridden there several times. Next I'll check out your Illinois list. I've done a lot of riding there, too, but I suspect not so much in the counties that made your list. It should be interesting to see if my hunch is correct.
Having a familiarity with two of these counties, Vigo and Wayne, I have additional observations. In the early 1900's Richmond had more millionaires (25) than any other town its size. It was a very beautiful and historic place that pretty much destroyed itself. It is now very trashy looking and a victim of very poor planning. Terre Haute, on the other hand, perhaps because it is larger and had more to draw from, has improved remarkably in its appearance over the last 50 years as well as its leadership. In 1970 it was about 10 years behind the times, unbelievably backward, but things have progressively gotten better, particularly in the past 20 years. It is a very clean place. The medical community is not necessarily a positive.

Well, graduating high school and having your high school education isn’t a bad thing, it doesn’t mean those people are snobby and, it doesn’t mean all those people are well off, it’s the same with those that have a college degree, not everyone’s situation is the same or what you seem to assume, so, don’t judge people by something you have no knowledge of! Indiana charges more tax on Hoosiers to meet the demands of government roads and infrastructure. In the southwest part of the state ,,tax money is taken but used in Indianapolis . The quality of roads. Is seen when driven. We live with out. The heavy population ares get preferential treatment.

I'm from Orange County and thought the one of the biggest employers was the French Lick Casino and Hotels. Alot of people have to travel out of the County to work, I use to drive 20 to 30 one way to work everyday.

Sounds like your picked heavily on towns with higher education. The shame is once their children earn a degree they go to cities/states that have mega incomes. Just remember some of the happiest people are the poor, because they do not have the stress to keep up with the Jones'.
I can only speak for myself, but when I was living in abject poverty, I was miserable. I had the stress of trying to keep a roof over mine and my childrens' heads. Using the Pell Grant to go to my local community college and learn new skills was the best thing I've ever done. But that's just me.

The county seat of Vermillion is Newport. Newport does not have either a grocery store or gas station and as far as I know one factory of any size in the county.. When the Newport Chemical Arsenal was in full bloom, maybe they had some $$ but not now.
I live in wabash county. And I have to say it's the worst place I have ever lived. There's absolutely nothing to do here. No store's, nothing but fast food ,no recreational activities. But if you like bean's and corn it's the place for you.

I'm surprised Vermillion county was not on there. Vermlillion county offers ...well...umm..hmm oh i know..they have 2 of the best schools.. North n South Vermillion. North is known for being more sports centered, football in particular.. parents from all over have either moved there to ensure their son goes there or they pay., even if they are from Illinois. I had 2 sons who loved that school,1 was in basketball the other football. My daughter however hated it and found its counterpart to be more suited. South leans heavily on the academics, she's my geeky nerd (just like me lol) other than these two schools..this county offers nothing else but a bunch of ghost towns, dirty rundown towns..i find the people there all seem to be miserably happy lol I lived in Cayuga for a while,then Dana with family in lodi, etc. i thought it was just me,but turns out that about every other household has the same odd sensation..that there's like this big dark gloomy negative cloud that just hangs over this huge chunk of land, especially Cayuga! And just about every inch puts off a vibration or just a vibes and hard to go anywhere without bumping into it's ghostly past. Js Ps. I mentioned parke county simply because it's made up of..like 1 great town and a couple of smaller ghostly poor towns. Everything seems to be centralized in and around Rockville. The county itself really has nothing to offer except food n retail. It does have a Female prison, amish country, the festival, tons of historical locations, and of course turkey run. People are overall poor but they seem to be educated n laid back. They are proud folk and they should be.. it's gorgeous there n peaceful...but small n empty pocketed.
Well The Farmers grow the food You eat. Why is this such a subject. I think that it is not necessary to even discuss. Being wealth is not the answer . Being happy, I know people who are in the manufacturing and farming are well content in there environment.
I lived in Portland in Jay County collectively for about 9 years. I'm about the same age as that serial killer. Before I graduated high school I was getting into the wrong crowd and was pretty much a lowlife there and I thought I knew every thief, drug dealer and hoodlum in the county. That guy must have been ghost. I probably went to junior high with him at least but I do not recognize him or have ever heard of him until now. His woman though I knew her I used to sell her weed and one of my married fellow lowlife buddies was banging her on the side. That area was weird though. It was a nice little Norman Rockwell type town when we moved there in 77. Big business started moving in and shutting down all the local merchants. Yuppie scum started buying up all the old Victorian homes there and dividing them up into rundown apartments. Out of town progressives started getting elected into the local politics and running the county into the dirt. When I was in 8th, 9th and 10th grade I had several part time jobs there but by 11th grade all those places were all out of business and that's when I got into weed dealing and other nefarious activities to make money. I went into the Marines though and that straightened me out. I tried to make a go of the place again for a few years after I did my 4 in the Marines but all the jobs around there were federal minimum wage jobs, hard to get and I was falling back into my old habits so I just got the hell out of there. Went to California got good work and a career going and stayed there for 30 years.

You one thing that you have forgot is that the Federal minimum wage is still only $7.25 per hour.
