If you love mechs so much, you should check out the Bioncle and Hero Factory Lego's, they're pretty much all big robot guys. Exo-Force would fit the mech bill better, but they haven't made those in years.
+Generikb I'm amazed at lego set designers as well, but have you looked at the Lego Ideas page? All of those are ideas that lego fans have created and submitted to Lego for the hopes of lego sets to be made. There's been 11 sets currently made with another several due to come out very soon, including Ghostbusters Ecto 1, The Back to the Future DeLorean, and Big Bang Theory. Doctor Who has also been approved for a lego set and is due to be released for purchase very soon.
The excavator can dig, but just on dig spots like those you can use scooby doo one, also you can chack a character abilities on the portal menu under the character tab (since there is a lot of situational abilities like grapple, dig or hacking that you can't just use the portal room)
