There was some hope it wouldn’t. Israel and other countries were working things out. That they have condemned a bunch of their own people to death with this doesn’t seem to bother Hamas at all. They knew this is likely how this would play out unless they are totally out of touch with reality.
Hamas must be pressured to release the hostages unconditionally.
