Here's a random walk through of the Antique Radio Club of Illinois Radiofest 2023. I went looking for nothing but as usual came home with a few treasures.
Thanks for the update Bob. Great meeting you there at the meet. That knob is from an RCA Berkshire projection TV/Radio combo set. Very rare and valuable set.
I had a flashback when I saw that RCA XL100 key chain. I had purchased an XL100 the first Christmas for my soon to be wife. It was around 1984. I finally got rid of it in the early 2000s! It went to the recycle center still working perfectly. The local TV repair shop was not interested in it. We have Ham fests in the Northeast, and it rains 75% of the time. They run May and October.
Bob, the numbers 200-300 on the Midwest radio refer to the FM station call numbers assigned to the modern FM band by the FCC in 1945. It covers the hundred stations that fit between 87.9 MHz and 107.9 MHZ with 87.9 being 200 and 107.9 being 300 and covering every other station in 200 KHz increments. The FCC announced the frequency allotment before assigning the call numbers, so few radio manufacturers used them.
It is to bad that this, was rained out it looks like there was good picking there. The kutstown radio fest is a great place to shop around for goodies I was there only one time 20 years ago. I am so so so glad I got most of my collection decades ago in the late 1970s and 1980s. Catalin radios at that time were not cheap I remember reading about catalin radios in NY magazine way back in 1979. An emerson Patriot was going for $75 at that time. So when I saw a maroon fada bullet at a yard sale for $5. I jumped on it. Most of my collection I paid $20 or less.
Hey Bob! I was there, saw myself in the video. If I would’ve noticed you I would’ve introduced myself, but I was too busy taking stuff to the car and back and shopping the donation sale. Came home with quite a haul.
Thanks for posting Bob. If I'd been more attentive I'd have introduced myself, I see I made it on film a couple times. Have to make this a more regular thing so I start recognizing everyone.
I had a brief exchange with you about the weather as you were looking at the bleak looking radar on your phone while under Nick T's tent. Nice to see you there and thanks for capturing some footage in between raindrops, even capturing my Dad and me at 16:36!
Wow! That guy scored a Zenith Flash Matic remote for only $115! One of those just sold in Rockford Illinois in October for $250...maybe it was the same one? Ive seen them sell for over $500 before.
Both of the Midwest Chassis are post war. Both have the modern FM band. I spoke with you at the donation auction. Tom K found a Midwest speaker that he put aside for you. It probably went with one of those chassis. Both sets are in Riders one in Volume 18 and the newer one in volume 20.
I had a car issue this morning so I had to cancel my trip up. I guess I didn’t miss anything. Those Midwest radios look like good finds. I would’ve snagged them.
Oh, there were deals to be had. Rain didn't get bad until around 10AM. My friend got a really nice bakelite Emerson radio for $20. Lots of good stuff in the donation area like that Tek scope that got snatched up immediately.
@@bandersentv at the time I intended to hit the road I would’ve arrived at between 9:00 and 9:30. The car issue just created a delay as it was quickly resolved so I could have continued but I had the foresight to check the weather. That ultimately led to the cancellation of my trip. You got the rain that passed through here overnight. The day ended up being pretty good regardless. Went antiquing and to a hobby shop with my son. Then we went to see the new TMNT movie. Next year I plan to head up the day before so I can get there when the swap first opens. That way I won’t have to get up so early. 😆
I usually do big car swap meets myself, but you end up finding all kinds of non car related things at mine. I bought a Dual trace textronics scope for 20 bucks that was supposed to work. It has the factory tech manual and case but doesn't work other than some lights coming on so haven't messed with it yet. A 3500 watt generator that has a 10 horse motor that needs a carb for 20, plus bikes and plenty of car parts and tools. Deals are everywhere if you dig around oddball places and most car people don't care about electronics so good deals can be accidentally found.
I was outdoors during this rain which basically was from 10 AM to 4 PM in Oak Park, IL . Steady and consistent and more is coming Sunday afternoon. There goes my trip to Union ,IL and a huge old car show. Vintage trains with cars only that day. Bakelite , plastic ,glass and painted metal is waterproof. Good haul from the donation tables.
I'd love too, but clients come first. The big batch of Predictas is being picked up in early September. Then I'll have time for radios. I'm going to finally finish repair the Philco 90 speaker. Then work on a Philco 39-30 and 118MX. And play around with the Midwest chassis. I already have a lead on a Midwest speaker.
Bob is this open to the public or only members of antique radio club of IL? I bought some tubes from Bob Dobush last week and he asked me if I was going. I figured it was probably for members only?
You just ask one of the guys running the area for a price until noon. Very fair prices. Then normally there is an auction on the remaining items. Things were a little hectic today.
Thank you for sharing. You really shouldn't post such videos. I found myself trying to use the pan and zoom functions to see stuff your camera was catching. It would be neat if there was a way to do such a live feed like that.
Thanks for the update Bob. Great meeting you there at the meet. That knob is from an RCA Berkshire projection TV/Radio combo set. Very rare and valuable set.
Likewise. Oh wow. Now I have an excuse to get one 😂
Hi Bob; The Coyne pin point troubles at 33:27 is a very good book , I have a copy of that very same book .. THANK YOU Marty
Wow. Luckily (for my wife) I'm not near any radiofests, I would have had trouble not loading up the truck with things I saw there!

Thank you. Mystery solved

I'm Jealous with that kester solder. Wish I had a 5 pound roll. ,sorry about the weather. Cool radios too. 😎😋😜
ahhh man i couldnt watch after about 22 minutes in, seeing all that old gear getting wet in the rain almost made me weep
That was just the donated stuff. All the good stuff went quick before the rain started

Doug Harlon! DH4683, I love that guy's channel, I wish he would post more.
Cool stuff. Neat to hang out with others sharing an interest.

Wow, lifetime supply of Kester 44
That's cool you brought home that Midwest radio there cool. Worth restoring
Two of them except all I have is the bare chassis. I'll try to get them working but not sure after that. Maybe give them away
@bandersentv yah see if can get them running. There condition looks good so could sell them easily after get them working

I heard Tom Carlson’s voice with the flash remote. I like his RUclips channel.
I like yours too!
I missed the first half. You did see him. He has a ton of a collection.
He sure does. We've been running into each other at these events for years.

Thank you for the info. Assuming they don't have SMD in the IF cans, should be easy to get them running.
I saw a hickok 539 tester :)

I had that exact Zenith 23" console as my first color TV for 115 used back about 74.

And it's still raining more than 24 hours later...
Sorry you guys got rained out. I feel bad for all those vintage electronics, especially the speakers that didnt have a tarp over them.
Im in to see a midwest radio fire up!!
I'll give it a try. Found the schematic and the biggest challenge will be the missing field coil speaker and output transformer.
I didn't bother going because of the rain, too bad about everything getting so wet.
It just seems to be such a
' teeth clincher ' to see a lot of antique electronics out in damp rainy weather.
Radio Radio, work on more Radios!

No, not at all. It is open to the public and no fees
Any deals on Grundigs? The cost and availability of vacuum tubes put it beyond my budget, thank you Joe.
I didn't get much of a chance to look at any radios before the rain started.
I have a Precision E-400 with original manual, but what use would it be today? timestamp 21:09
Aligning radios and signal injection for troubleshooting.
How’s that donation area work? Im not seeing price tags on anything.

Unfortunate all that stuff got wet
Maybe they shouldn't have an event like this in the outdoors? Ya think?
Been this way for about 50 years. Same with all the hamfests. No one could afford to rent an indoor space.
