Incredible how such an eloquent and important speech about NZ is relegated to a small corner of the internet where most won't see it. There is more truth in this 30 minute speech than the entire reporting from our state funded media in the last 7 years.

Agreed. These people running the country are so out of touch, they do not have a clue what it is like for everyday New Zealanders ! These people may have all of the credentials, but they are so dumb! Ask the people, ask us for help and get together and listen to what the people have to say, listen to what it’s like for the people and maybe listen to them and value their opinions and think outside your regimented thinking. This country is a mess. As a nurse I am embarrassed at our health care system and this is one of the major problems we need to work on! Change this ridiculous health system structure, invest in more education, more front line services, early diagnostic labs and imaging, nipping disease in the bud before people get really sick, suffer and end up costing the country more money due to more surgical, rehab, treatments needed, bug if we worked on early diagnoses, prevention and park the ambulance at the top of the cliff instead of the bottom .

This woman finally finished off the death of New Zealand and its great past and when she saw the game was up, she ran off to America to work for the UN and pay for play lecturing BS at Harvard.Plus she even had her Parliament grant her a 50K annuity after she left. Excuse me! Don't tarnish all landlords with the same brush.
When we first started rental investment, it is for the long term goal of being able to have a little extra for our retirement. We were not high wage earners. It was hard going and we knew we had to tighten our belts but we were willing to take the financial risk and a lot of hard work so we can achieve our retirement goal.
From day one, all our tenants are well looked after. We get to know them and at times we even lower their rent when they are in financial strife like losing a job etc. Their rent payment are way below market rate in the first place. Cost of living affects everyone including landlords because insurances, rates, mortgage rates increase and other maintenance expenses have gone thru the roof. There is a line where we have to safe guard our retirement goal or we lose it all after decades of trying to achieve our goal.
The landlord lose if they are put in a position to sell and the tenant losses because there is less rental property on the market.
Can you imagine we put up the rent and felt so bad about it even though the market rate is showing the rent to be at just under mid range.
Imagine if a whole lot of landlords decide to sell how do you think NZ is able to house the population? Our govt certainly will not be able to - we are too small a population as we won't have enough tax take to pay for other necessities of a functioning country.
Owning properties have as much risks as well as financially good but it is not a given that the financial good is for sure.
I know there are a whole lot of landlords like us.

The addiction of unskilled immigrant workers who send all their money back home was another great idea, instead of raising the minimum to a livable wage the government catered to businesses and let in cheap labour, what they didnt figure was all that labour was going to send their money back to the phillipines and now OUR economy is failing, businesses going under left and right and all of this and more while literally taking food out of children's mouths in schools cutting public jobs, inflaming racial tension AND giving themselves a pay rise. anything that goes wrong just blame the previous government blah blah blah maybe when this coalition has finished padding their friends pockets they might fix one or two things for the country. elections can't come soon enough these greedy bastards need to go

As a teacher of 40yrs at every level I'm also appalled at the schools. Paul, you are correct about inspiring children to think but getting teachers to create this within the present system is impossible, despite what you say. The single largest impediment to this is the anachronistic proscriptive meaningless curricula that alienates, disengages and kills motivation in children. The key factor that will remedy this is to give well educated, passionate teachers complete autonomy to devise their own holistic curricula and teach it in small teams to small groups over a continuous number of years, based on the unique needs of the multivaried range of children they teach. Holistic education means a revamp of the traditional notion of 'subjects' into an 'ideas / project" study to reduce the massive inefficiency, duplication and meaningless content in the traditional manner. "Subject" areas only become meaningful within a holistic understanding. It should be modelled on Nature where there are no subjects! We need to maintain the efficiency of Elementary School curricula in a continuous process into High school. As a consequence schools will completely change into efficient , engaging, joyful places of learning.

I’ll tell you how it all started. With Mt Egmont. I remember when I was young. It was always Mt Egmont. Then somebody said to me, “It’s Mt Taranaki now” I replied, “No it’s not! It’s Mt Egmont!” Now nobody calls it Mt Egmont anymore. I will never stop calling it Mt Egmont. Why is it important. It’s Mt Taranaki now, then Wanganui became Whanganui and so on, it won’t stop. When did kiwi’s lose their backbone and just accept whatever anybody tells them

New Zealand lost the incentives to keep the pioneers here. We all left to countries that would pay us what we are worth, allow us to afford a better quality of life and be more connected with the real world. As long as NZ is insular, isolated and fails to compete with the rest of the world it will fail.
