China’s RoRo’s are the weak link, as despite a military carrying spec, they are a vulnerable design. You have to assume China won’t be sending tank ferries across any sea until they’ve seen off every hostile submarine in that area. Sea Mines would likely be the greatest threat to such a mission. Repelling every threat from every hostile nation before they can set off would still be a daunting task. Although Taiwan is clearly the #1 target, there are a number of islands around the South China Sea that will be unhappy about the existence of these bridge landing craft.

Clearly the obvious weakness is the keeping those bridges from being destroyed. I would think that they'd either send many at once in the first wave. I think the question isn't what and when they are using these for but WHERE. Everyone is dead set on Taiwan but those can be used everywhere to quickly claim some island or support some land side action from the sea side.
They have already openly expressed the intent to invade some Japanese islands in addition to Taiwan. They also continue to support the DPRK and could potentially use them to assist in a large scale conflict there, such as capturing some islands or opening up an invasion on the peninsula deep behind South Korea's primary defenses. Furthermore, I think these are a not to subtle threat against countries around the South China Sea such as the Philippines. Beyond Taiwan these could be used to exert force or as threat of force for political leverage throughout the regions near China.
I know nothing of maritime things- but wouldn't you be limited on range by the seafaring abilities of the barges? a quick dash over to Taiwan sounds quite easy, not a multi day journey across open seas?
Excellent video. Thank you for taking the time to educate people like me who know very little about this subject. Also thanks for advising not to underestimate Chinese innovation and skill. It could very well be that the smaller barges are for light vehicles and troops, as you obviously can pack them way lighter, and thus dont need as expensive a barge to get the GI's across.
They should build large quantities of naval drones like those used by Ukraine in the Black Sea and deploy them for rapid use. They should also build large numbers of aerial drones in addition to conventional weapons such as naval mines, anti-ship missiles and anti-aircraft missiles and fortifying likely invasion beaches.
@@philipdepalma4672They need missiles and mines more than drones for anti-shipping work. China’s fleet is MUCH larger than Russia’s Black Sea fleet. it’s also a lot newer and better maintained. Drones aren’t nearly as effective in open ocean warfare.

I think it was last year when like whole armored battalion was moved from Finland to Sweden using only commercial Ro-Ro ships. Especially Finnlines has lots of big Ro-Ro ships meant to carry trucks between Baltic sea Countries. I'm not sure how heavy vehicles passenger ferries that Estonia, Finland and Sweden also have lots of can carry. But APC and IFVs are 100% possible to carry on most ferries that sail at Baltic. Edit: 2023 US armor like M1A2 Abrams were transferred from Estonia to Finland us M/S Star that is commercial passenger ferry.
Very good video. TBH, I was wondering where these were, as this type of 'bridge' barge was a feature of allied landing operations in Europe and the Pacific in WW2 so I absolutely agree this is a very real indicator that China is prepping for an invasion, it has already built all the 'dual-use' warships and ferries that it can use for other purposes, now, it appears, it is building it's bespoke 'Mulberry Harbour' type equipment for a very specific landing operation. As the author notes, these may well have been designed for specific beaches. I would be astonished if the Tiawanese are unaware of that vulnerability but this cannot be comforting. With regards to the RO-RO ferries, they can be fitted with internal bulkheads to make them much more damage resistant in time of war. Look up the Nordland ferry and how it was modified before going to the Falklands in1982, in fact, read about the British STUFT (Ships Taken Up From Trade) programme as I am sure the PLAN (Chinese Navy) studied it carefully when making their choices about all this.
Anytime I see WWII pictures like that at 12:58, I get chills from the sense of that conflict's true scale that is revealed. It is so hard for me (and most modern people, I'm sure) to imagine war of such colossal breadth. May the next century not educate us with fresh examples...
I'd be curious how these things would stand up to naval attack. Either conventional ASMs, artillery, or mass USV assault. You gotta figure Taiwan has learned from Ukraine's successes after all.
These things would probably be accompanied by military support vessels ( destroyers, frigates, etc.) but I do think that these would be very vulnerable to any attack really. Those long bridges are just a huge point of failure. A relatively small payload weapon could destroy that bridge and render this whole boat pretty useless. Without the bridges this is just another boat. It would be interesting to see what scenario this would be used under. Because I don’t really see this being used as a hot landing type of ship. I would just be to vulnerable.
@@jamarplunkett3283 Nah, these things will attack all enemy ships including corvettes and destroyers by deploying the bridge on top of them and having troops board them! Hi There is some problem with your microphone or noise cancellation. Your speech drifts in and out. There is a bit of reverberation as well. I hope you can fix these issues. Best wishes and thanks for all your hard work.
There has been and still is ferries that can carry tanks. The USA has them and most Western Countries have them, the British and Australian have the Bay Class. Wilhelmsen have a around the world service carrying RO RO cargo on ships designed to carry tanks and heavy earth moving equipment, Some are on charter to US Companies and are US Flag for the period of carter
This is an accessory to such ferries in order to not need ports. Aside for hovercrafts, all other sea/ocean going Ro-Ro ships need hardened, dredged, deep draft port facilities that their ramps can lock onto.
The point is that the PRC civilian ferries are built to accommodate AFVs (not something ferries in Western countries are designed to do), which massively boosts their sealift capacity. These floating piers mean that that fleet can now access many more offloading points.
@@kwonekstrom2138 Plenty of Civilian crewed vessels carry tanks all around the world. How does the US move its tanks to from the Far East or Europe ?. How does Poland get tanks from the USA or Korea?
Please get a solid microphone. Your voice keeps cutting in and out. Sound deadening panels and whatnot are nice to haves but not necessary. But a solid podcasting mic would do wonders.
This is a smart design. Reminds me of the the mobile port designs that were tested during WW2 for the D-Day Invasion, of which 1 design ultimately was employed and was partially successful (it involved sinking caisson barges, which behaved as structural supporting columns that held up interconnecting linked buoyed metal sections that formed a bridge on the water. Edit: Ah. I see you mentioned this exact example as their historical inspiration 10:28 😅
Probably sits on the deck for transportation. Near shore it gets pushed forward (probably by hydraulic jacks or heavy winches) while adjusting the cable tension from the tower so it doesn't flop (tower probably has pulleys up top on which the cables hang, and the tension adjustments are made by heavy winches under the deck or from lateral structures behind the tower). Quite simple design.
Taiwan is well aware that *frigates* arent going to invade their island, and they are well aware of these ferries and the fact they are the primary threat to Taiwan's independence. So they will reserve a significant porportion of their long range antishipping capability *specifically* for these ships. The problem with China using these ferries in actual invasion service (as opposed to using them to intimidate civilian leadership and get what they actually want without the need for an opposed landing) is they do NOT have the defences and survivability necessary to cross the Taiwan Straits against any credible military opposition. Unless China can utterly suppress ALL Tainwanese (and any allies) long range fires and strike aircraft before the landing craft even leave port, and *keep* then entirely suppressed for the entire crossing and landing, these vessels are cold meat on the table. IOW, they could be useful for *second* wave reinforcements... but that still requires a *first* wave to land large ground forces ahead of time.
Taiwan can also trap them while they are landing. attacking the landing ships while they are near the range of long range artillery hiding in the mountains. and oh there are also sea mines on those waters that taiwan can rapidly deploy with small boats days even before the actual invasion began. infact spies in China will be already informing Taiwan ahead the invasion. also its impossible for PLA to hide a massive force being assembled in their ports.
But without focusing on frigates and destroyers their anti shipping weapons will get destroyed, the combat ships will hammer the shores and reveal and hidden weapons. By that point if they knock out all the landing ships they still will have knocked out Taiwan’s antiship capability leaving china free reign over landing in other ways. China has such huge numbers of frigates its ridiculous.
As we see more information coming out like these images, we’re getting a clearer picture of what China’s plan might be. I think you’re right this would be part of a second wave rather than first, just as Mulberries were used at D-Day, but I suspect also similar to D-Day China will only deploy them when they believe every Taiwanese/allied strike aircraft and long range fire is suppressed or destroyed. As many military analysts have attested, this conflict likely starts with a massive cruise, ballistic, and hypersonic missile barrage meant to deter or preemptively defeat any possible response. The PLAAF and PLARF have been heavily funded and frequently drilling for a while now, so they will almost certainly have the resources for a Gulf War-scale air campaign before any amphibious vessel begins steaming. Whether those missiles will be aimed at just Taiwan or also American bases in the first island chain is where the rubber meets the road.
@@KC_G4Sthats assuming that China will take its time to lay the ground for a ground invasion, which is a risky decision should any allies actually join in the defense of the war
I disagree. I don't think China is close unless you call after 2030 close to invading Taiwan Militarily. I follow geo politics closely, especially with regard to China because I am Australian and what China does is of great concern to Australians (or it should be). I dont think China will invade militarily into Taiwan until at least after 2030. I truly believe China wants the Taiwanese to love China and will do anything and everything before resorting to military means. this will take time, a lot of time. In the meantime, China will put on display both its carrots and its sticks, big sticks. Perhaps someday China will use Military means, it just won't be anytime soon. But my theories are not as exciting as those who claim Chinese invasion is imminent. Various pundits have been shouting from the rooftops that China is about to invade Taiwan for the last 15 years. yet, China has not. People argue that China is still preparing, well of course they are. China wants to be the strongest Military in the world, so of course it will build for every conceivable outcome (Just like the U.S.) this doesn't mean any invasion is imminent. Even the flying of Jets around the Island of Taiwan is just part of China's Stick and is more in relation to arguments and diplomatic tiffs that we don't understand or hear about in the news, and thats why it has calmed back down again. You will know when we are very close to an invasion because there will be things like Naval Blockades occurring as well as a massive allied presence. We need to be alert and prepared, but not alarmed... yet. I think we have at the very least another 5 years to go (probably much more). However, if some other factor enters the equation then the invasion of Taiwan could potentially be expedited. China's exercises and building of infrastructure are not necessarily an indicator of imminent invasion. It's just what big powers do. So I disagree with much of what is being said in this video, but im sure many will love it. Im, not the excitement junky that many are and I have been watching very closely for a very long time. Trump could change everything though. Trump is extremely unpredictable, so we dont know what effect he could have on any potential invasion of Taiwan. A great time for China to invade would be during the Ukraine War and yet it doesn't. This back, how long have people been saying that China is about to invade anytime now? It's not unlike those claiming Russia is about to collapse. They have been saying that every day Since February 2022 and yet Russia fights on. I am certain we would potentially see the break up of Russia before the invasion of Taiwan. I was certain Russia was going to invade Ukraine and I (along with others) were right. but China is NOT going to invade Taiwan any time soon. At least 2030 or longer. One other point we need to take note of. China fakes a lot of stuff. it is not impossible this is more "Stick" behavior designed to give the illusion of imminent invasion. but It's NOT going to happen soon. China is NOTHING like Russia. China is very pragmatic, intelligent/clever they are not bumbling fools like the Germans in Hogan Heroes (Or Russia) they dont or won't make the same errors that Russia does. So again 2030 and beyond and NOT before.
The problem is, the Chinese government themselves have stated that they will be ready to get Taiwan back by 2027. And since feb 22, 2022, they have stopped openly publishing their military expenditures

Nearly anything that can hit a ship like this can mitigate the risk. Repelling every threat from every hostile nation before they can set off would still be a daunting task. Although Taiwan is clearly the #1 target, there are a number of islands around the South China Sea that will be unhappy about the existence of these bridge landing craft.

But.. And I hate to be one of the many pointing out sound issues but Im not a native English speaker so clear audio would be oh so so nice. At points the sound quality is so messed up that whole words (or several in one sentence) are unintelligible. I don't know if its just the mic or does rendering mess up something.
Also, (this is not big issue) I can hear the room quite well. Eliminate all smooth reflective surfaces around the mic to get clearer audio input. Put some acoustic panels to the ceiling just above the mic. It doesn't need much but makes a big difference. Also the table in front of you might add to the room reverb that with a mic like this just makes some words very messy. I wish you the highest levels of patience with comments like this.. :)

Clearly the obvious weakness is the keeping those bridges from being destroyed.
I would think that they'd either send many at once in the first wave. Or more likely attain supremacy over the AO.l as they land.
Anything big but short of a nuclear blast would weak havoc across the many beaches being breached.
Remember that Taiwan has a long coastline, there would be similar misinformation efforts to confuse Taiwanese forces which beachhead gets the greatest lickin'.

I think the question isn't what and when they are using these for but WHERE. Everyone is dead set on Taiwan but those can be used everywhere to quickly claim some island or support some land side action from the sea side.
Poor Greenland..
Close to easy landing spots so the marines can secure the heavy landing areas. Look at roads near to beaches
LHD's look like they'd be quite useful in support of China's Africa operations, should the diplomacy through peaceful means fail.
It would be foolish for western countries to allow arrogance to undermine judgement, analysis, decision making
It could very well be that the smaller barges are for light vehicles and troops, as you obviously can pack them way lighter, and thus dont need as expensive a barge to get the GI's across.

I wonder what Taiwan is doing to counter this.
My guess would be mines and ASMs
As a Taiwanese I honestly think we will reunify, the point is we want 1 country 2 system. We want to keep some systems that we currently have. Eitherway, there is no point in fighting. Most people around me don't want to fight either. They all believe deep down, one day we will reunify. We are Chinese at the end of the day.
@@roro-v3z "One country two systems" really worked out so well for HK, right? They got to keep "some of their systems"... until Beijing changed their mind and there was nothing HK could do. I'm quite sure Ro-Ro ships that sail at Baltic can easily transport quite a lot of heavy vehicles including tanks.

Whether the PRC invades or not, they are telling Taiwan they can do it. The PRC is definitely telling Taiwan that they should consider reunification.
PRC and ROC are both part of China, and this is China's civil war.
What a smart invention!
I'd be curious how these things would stand up to naval attack. Either conventional ASMs, artillery, or mass USV assault.
You gotta figure Taiwan has learned from Ukraine's successes after all.
At this point you just need to assume that these things will only come to play after China's own mass drone attack on Taiwanese defenses.
A hundred miles of sea to cross - that's going to seem like a very long way in one of those.
@@jamarplunkett3283 Nah, these things will attack all enemy ships including corvettes and destroyers by deploying the bridge on top of them and having troops board them!
He was talking about civilian ferries, but you're right that military ferries already have the specs necessary to carry military equipment.
The point is that the PRC civilian ferries are built to accommodate AFVs (not something ferries in Western countries are designed to do), which massively boosts their sealift capacity. These floating piers mean that that fleet can now access many more offloading points.

This audio is painful to listen to.
Amazing stuff as usual
I don't understand how the bridge works. How do they put it out?
Probably sits on the deck for transportation. Near shore it gets pushed forward (probably by hydraulic jacks or heavy winches) while adjusting the cable tension from the tower so it doesn't flop (tower probably has pulleys up top on which the cables hang, and the tension adjustments are made by heavy winches under the deck or from lateral structures behind the tower). Quite simple design.
Great content! A new mic would benefit your channel and probably raise subscriptions! God speed
great content but why is the audio quality so poor?
YOUR CHANNEL IS VERY IMPORTANT. TYVM
Whether those missiles will be aimed at just Taiwan or also American bases in the first island chain is where the rubber meets the road.
just to be clear HI Sutton clearly stated these would have to be a 2nd wave but that was only clear to those who watched his video.
@@KC_G4Sthats assuming that China will take its time to lay the ground for a ground invasion, which is a risky decision should any allies actually join in the defense of the war

i'v been trying to think of a none war related reason for building the things. but i can't think of one. :(
Definitely seems closer to reality now.
The invasion talk started in 1945. 80 years ago.
The problem is, the Chinese government themselves have stated that they will be ready to get Taiwan back by 2027. And since feb 22, 2022, they have stopped openly publishing their military expenditures

Can Taiwan mitigate the threat with large numbers of USVs?
The return of Jeune École
Nearly anything that can hit a ship like this can mitigate the risk. But no single weapon system can simply ensure it can penetrate whatever defensive layers the enemy might have or that it can always be launched regardless of enemy action.
So by building large number of USVs Taiwan would force China to account for that risk before deploying these.
