Just an FYI for everyone who is new here.. I've recently done some videos talking about the "pros and cons" of living here since we've been here over six months now! That may be something you'll enjoy if you've enjoyed this one! :-)
I remember waking up during midnight thinking it was morning, ended up making breakfast and other stuff then my parents came downstairs and asked me what the hell I was doing up this late. Lol
My only visit to Yellowknife was a driving trip from Detroit, MI.. Prior to my coming into town a CF18A landed hard on a wet runway next to the road into town that runs by the edge of the runway and dislodged a live missle close enough to the roadway that they decided to close the roadway.. The air force had to wait out an explosive team from Cold Bay before they could do anything.. I got stuck in that backup on the hwy for hours, the RCMP even popped by taking soda/pop orders from people stuck in traffic., finally they decided to get everyone to drive through a perimeter gate onto one of the runways, passing the jet and missile at a safe distance and race down that runway towards a different airport gate exit. That was fun. Then while leaving a few days later about 100 miles s of town I blew a tire at 3 AM (it was pretty light out), un packed my luggage , changed the tire and after packing everything back up and was about to leave I noticed a big brown bear maybe 1800 feet away up the hill side watching me as the sun crept over the horizon. It's amazing for a town of under 20K population just how many tall buildings it has. Go anywhere else and a city that small everything is 6 stories or shorter.
udi s aww well thank you! Check out my vid from today to see what Yellowknife is like in April if you’re thinking of visiting! I’ll do one every month so that hopefully ppl planning a visit will be able to choose what month they want to visit with details about what it’s like! My sister in law is in Toronto! We’ve been many times! I always admire people from Toronto! I just wouldn’t do well with all the people and with how busy it is!
Hi from Mexico. I´ve been to Yellowknife once and it was something diferent. I went there in winter and cold temperatures were something I had never felt-
It really helps with judging distance and visibility, even in broad daylight. It sounds strange but it when you compare cars without headlights to those with, it makes a surprisingly large difference.
Although the speed limit is 45km/hr, you can basically drive to anywhere you are going in less than 10 minutes. I liked the slow speed. If freaked me out after about 4 years there when we went to Seatle and had to drive on the freeway with a _million_ other cars. BTW, when we bought, we bought a trailer. on Catalina drive. Our third month there, it went down to -52C with no wind.
You are so right! 45 feels way too fast depending on the day!! So did you find it was a good investment? It freaks me out a bit when I hear ppl talking about keeping the house in good shape in comparison to owning a house in other provinces..for example doing the roof more frequently, the super high utilities, etc. We can't figure out if it would be a good investment or not. How many years were you here again? People are saying this is the coldest winter in a long time but it hasn't been THAT cold! haha!!
Planning to come visit from Alabama (US) in late Dec 2022 for our 15th wedding anniversary going to stay in Yellowknife for 3 days and Blachford Lake Lodge for 3 days looking forward to it so much!

I'm American and have wanted to visit Yellowknife and the Northwest Territories for awhile now, provided the border between the two countries ever opens up again. Do you know if there are direct flights there from Toronto? Actually, isn't the border of the Northwest Territories even closed to other Canadians as of now due to coronavirus?
Hey! I’m pretty sure you’d have to stop in Edmonton or somewhere first! Not many places would have a direct flight here. Our airport is quite small. And yes our borders are closed unless you come and immediately quarantine for 14 days. So that’s obviously not ideal for travellers. I do hope this all ends soon so that you can make it up for a visit. I have a “visiting Yellowknife” playlist you may want to check out in the meantime! All the best!
During non-covid times, there are multiple daily flights from Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver, and weekly flights from Ottawa. Both Calgary and Vancouver have lots of connection flights from major US hubs. Summer is amazing for freshwater fishing, however you will not be able to see the Aurora Borealis until late August. Avoid October and November as it is the months of cloudy and snow.
I have tons of videos like this. :-) Check out some of my playlists about yellowknife maybe- Yellowknife by month videos or Moving to Yellowknife, Visiting, etc.
Northwest territories is the best territory. My family moved from saskatewhan and i have no regrets! It might be cold, but if you have a nice cozy home, its totally worth it to see the northern lights!
Ha, we have yet to do that! We've driven out of the city a few times but nothing spectacular. My husband even got an app on his phone telling him when you can see them best lol and still nothing. I think we just don't stay up late enough lol!!! But yes, you are right it is so beautiful! We considered a move to Saskatchewan too but I'm glad we chose here in the end!
Yes it really is! We have a room darkening shade plus black out curtains and it’s still not enough. I’m going to try a sleep mask.my husband has an easier time because he works shift work but the kids are the ones who get so messed up. Hahah I find if we try to wind down in the bedrooms for a while that it’s easier because it’s dark enough but if we don’t give them time to wind down it’s a struggle for hours. Also you’ve really got to pay attention to the time because you feel like you want to do things and be productive because it’s light and then won’t realize it’s so late if that makes sense. It does def mess you up a bit!
Ha, it is kind of weird. We don’t have many storms though. I guess it’s because they’d just be plotting everyday for seven months to keep the roads clear. Hahaha
Not really in parks. There is one place called the Northlands where there is a group of trailers (you can search it on my channel if you’d like- I did a tour of it). The housing prices are so high possibly because of the salaries here...possibly because it’s hard to own land (you can lease it), possibly because it’s expensive to get materials shipped here to build homes.

Sadie haha! Glad you enjoyed it! You should def come to Canada for a vacay! Maybe Toronto or Calgary or something though where there is more to do! It depends on what you’re into I guess! If it’s outdoors stuff this is the place!
So what.. you don't think it's as nice here as New York? Joking, joking. I honestly have no idea. I know they have trouble because there isn't much land that they can build on (I think because of unresolved land claims from the Native population?) I'm not exactly sure though. And it costs a lot to build and maintain houses here I'm sure that has something to do with it.
Its because its so expensive for building supplies, contractors, the building seasons isn't as long either. The land itself is also very expensive(200,000 plus) for absolutely nothing on it, you need to blast the rock and then start to build. It adds up super fast.
Thank you so much for these videos - I might be moving to Inuvik next year, and it is really difficult to find good solid information about what life in NTW is actually like! There's lots of shots of pretty landscapes and so on, but no nitty gritty of the day to day...this is so useful!!

I'm so sorry but I'm not familiar with what is required to immigrate! Best of luck! It's probably def hard/impossible right now with all that's going on.
Mike Nukem sorry some of us Canadians can’t read! 😂😂😂 So you confused me with the referral part.. that’s what made me think you were asking about immigration. Anyway!! Haha. I am not sure why when you are applying you are not hearing back.. maybe it would depend on the field of work you’re trying to get into? I know for my husband he had to apply a few times to get a job through the government and it took a super long time! We were prepared to go ASAP but it took months. I know that’s still not helpful I’m sorry!
@@LifeinYellowknife very good ! Congrats! I am actually looking forward to migrate to Canada through finding job and sponsorship from a regional province . But I don't know much about job opportunities in the IT sector in the northwestern territories. Especifically in Yellowknife. Do you have some idea about that ?

The daylight hours fact was so crazy! I can't imagine having such extremes with such little daylight in the winter and having it light all the time in the summer. That would be so strange!
Ha, that's what everyone said and says to us but it hasn't really phased me so far. The only thing is that the kids have trouble going to bed sometimes because it's still light but we just need to do a better job of blocking the light out. Thanks for watching btw!
I m Bulgarian and I just saw in google maps north canada. I was curious about population, territory etc. For the gooood s saaake who will live in 2 000 000km territory and 38 000 population. There is no alive soul there lol
This is hilarious!!! My husband and I got a good kick out of this! There are no roads for most of the territory so it would be hard to build haha...a lot of native land claims as well. I'm pretty sure outside of Yellowknife it's really just reserves. It is really weird though you are so right! hahahah!
That's a common question I find. There are tons of different cultures and nationalities here. Most of the people who live here seem to be from other places! It's very diverse. :-)
i ama lookign at a govenrmetn job witht eh GNWT the salary sems goood 120,000 dollars, 12000 bilingual bonus and 3700 Northern Allowance finished my political sicence degree in St thomas univeristy in fredericton
Thanks for asking. We had 3 confirmed cases here in Liberia, and about 30 suspected cases too. The restrictions are already in place but not lock down cause we can move around
No, great question! We've only got one case in the whole territory so far (it's here in Yellowknife). I think most people are trying to stay home. The hospital is taking lots of precautions. My husband is screened every shift before work and they aren't letting any visitors etc. How is it where you are?
Wow, let’s buy a new build trailer in the USA for $80,000, tow it up to Yellowknife and sell it for $600-800,000 dollars, sorry, I believe that’s what their doing to you guys. Check out ( AugustaWoods.com ) here in Michigan
Ha, yeah it's crazy! To get land up here is so difficult too, so even if you could buy a trailer from someone else you'd probably never get land to put it on lol! I'm exaggerating a bit but it's just expensive.
Canada is a place I would love to visit someday and yellowknife sounds like a great place to visit! but living there would be a whole other story expensive as hell! lol Great share :)

Kamlesh Pal Yukon is the territory beside NT. I haven’t visited yet but I hear it’s beautiful too!
Do you believe in big foot(yeti’s)?
not really. :-)
You the cutest! 😂 And btw, I'm loving the new couch!!!!!
HAHA, anything is great compared to our old one eh? LOL! Yeah, we love it too!
I wanna go to the Northern Territories and make a living there. Is there any referral program to make it possible? I feel that just applying is not working.
PS.: I am Canadian.
I'm so sorry but I'm not familiar with what is required to immigrate! Best of luck! It's probably def hard/impossible right now with all that's going on.
@@LifeinYellowknife lol I'm Canadian, mam.
@@LifeinYellowknife Thank you!
Thats how I am aplying and knowing it takes time brings some light to it. I will keep applying!
@@mikenukem Oh good! Best of luck!!
If I come there on tourist visa can I get job there . then can I live permanent
pankaj sharma im not sure about that sort of thing sorry!
Why did you move from Ontario to Yellowknife
For my husbands work. He got a full time nursing job here with a good pay and we couldn't find full time coming out of school in Ontario. :-)
@@LifeinYellowknife very good ! Congrats! I am actually looking forward to migrate to Canada through finding job and sponsorship from a regional province . But I don't know much about job opportunities in the IT sector in the northwestern territories. Especifically in Yellowknife. Do you have some idea about that ?
cristian monasterio unfortunately not! The jobs that I see are online. I don’t know anyone in IT. You can watch my jobs video for ideas of where to look but beyond that I’m not sure. Best of luck!
@@LifeinYellowknife thanks !!👍 I'll do some research online. If you hear about a job opportunity in IT let me know ,😉👍, I actually live in Peru. But I am from venezuela. I found Canada a very good place to live and stablish with a family . I'll watch your videos also to get more info about Yellowknife . 👍. Keep making videos !
cristian monasterio thanks so much! Will do!
Those housing prices are California prices >.>
Ha oh yeah? Yikes!
There is only one minus of Yellowknife for me - that I am not there
Haha nice! There is still time! Come on out!
Nice!!
:-)
I m Bulgarian and I just saw in google maps north canada. I was curious about population, territory etc. For the gooood s saaake who will live in 2 000 000km territory and 38 000 population. There is no alive soul there lol
This is hilarious!!! My husband and I got a good kick out of this! There are no roads for most of the territory so it would be hard to build haha...a lot of native land claims as well. I'm pretty sure outside of Yellowknife it's really just reserves. It is really weird though you are so right! hahahah!
Bozhidar Petrov it’s called slave lake because of the slavey people that used to live here.
@@LifeinYellowknife (。ŏ﹏ŏ) slaves there at this cold.
Bozhidar Petrov no I think you misunderstood me. The slavey people.. like a group of people.
@@LifeinYellowknife ohhhh
how about racial discrimination? is there black people or i can be the first black people to live in yellowknife.
That's a common question I find. There are tons of different cultures and nationalities here. Most of the people who live here seem to be from other places! It's very diverse. :-)
@@LifeinYellowknife The Muslim community built a mosque in Yellowknife.
i think its true and yes you need to wear water proof mascara
Where are you from? Have you travelled here or live here? Thanks for the support!
yes i live in yellowknife
@@emilyhutchings4748 Awesome! Well thanks for watching!

Awesome! I hope it works out for you!
Thanks for asking. We had 3 confirmed cases here in Liberia, and about 30 suspected cases too. The restrictions are already in place but not lock down cause we can move around
Wow! Well stay safe! xo
Just curious, how is the COVID19 situation over there
No, great question! We've only got one case in the whole territory so far (it's here in Yellowknife). I think most people are trying to stay home. The hospital is taking lots of precautions. My husband is screened every shift before work and they aren't letting any visitors etc. How is it where you are?
The thumbnail was the most interesting part of this video.
HAHAHA aww well I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it!
Yellowknife sounds like sweden 😎😂
Ha does it? 🥶lol
Does it?, done swedish lapland in Jan. Hav'nt been to Yellowknife, not yet and it beckons

@@LifeinYellowknife ya

Suvojeet Mukhopadhyay thank you! So cool you’re watching from India! I appreciate it! :-)
@@LifeinYellowknife Welcome 🙂
I feel like I seen you before
Kadenghpo Lemon lol you may have 🤷♀️
Wow, let’s buy a new build trailer in the USA for $80,000, tow it up to Yellowknife and sell it for $600-800,000 dollars, sorry, I believe that’s what their doing to you guys. Check out ( AugustaWoods.com ) here in Michigan
Ha, yeah it's crazy! To get land up here is so difficult too, so even if you could buy a trailer from someone else you'd probably never get land to put it on lol! I'm exaggerating a bit but it's just expensive.
Why would you wear makeup when it’s that cold?
DANIEL RICKEL hahahahahaha!!! Great comment! I don’t always but I like to look presentable when I can! 😉😂
Canada is a place I would love to visit someday and yellowknife sounds like a great place to visit! but living there would be a whole other story expensive as hell! lol Great share :)
haha! Yeah pretty expensive! Thanks!
Seems way overpriced for such a place and the elements to live in??? Such a willingly controlled environment this Canada is???
Rm Rm I think it’s beautiful really, and free. I guess we are willingly controlled yes! Haha!
