That's is Guy Penrod with the long grey hair. After 7 sons, he finally got a daughter.
This was performed in Carnigie Hall in New York just a few months after 9/11 happened. Thats why you see a lot of first responders and firemen in the audience.
Guy Penrod, very well-known, David and Guy's voices together are pure gold. This was a tribute concert for the 911 emergency men and women.
Bill Gaither commented that, unless David was a part of the group, they would never do this song. He said that this song belonged to David, and if im correct, the Gaither Vocal Band has never performed this without David.

David Phelps is 54 years old now and STILL the best singer in the entire world able to belt out C#5s and Ds in mix voice with Bel Canto opera resonance. As someone who has been trained in Bel Canto opera technique myself, I have closely studied David’s voice and in his material in the late 90s and early 2000s, it’s still hard to believe that that voice is actually coming out of a mere human being… honestly! He sounds like an opening in the dimensional clouds has opened up, and we are hearing a glimpse of one of Heaven’s angel warriors singing with divinely anointed power and command before God and the angel armies.
The gentleman you are wondering about, his name is Guy Penrod. Very talented vocalist.
David Phelps has such a great voice! Truly a gift from God.
Bill Gaither is 88 and still singing! Bill and his wife Gloria have written songs that will last long after they are gone. Anthony Burger on piano! Icing on the cake.
Amazing reactions as alway. The man with the long gray hair is Guy Penrod. He was a long time member of the gaither vocal band along with Russ Taff, David Phelps, and Bill Gaither. There have been a number of singers in the Gaither Vocal band over the years but this particular lineup is tied for my favorite with the lineup that includes David, Bill, Wes Hampton and Michael English. Their harmonies are amazing. Please keep going down the David Phelps rabbit hole though. He is possibly the best tenor of this generation and he is such an amazing song writer and arranger as well.

As we come up on Easter Sunday you must listen to David Phelps sing "End of the Beginning". It is from this same concert. He wrote and composed the whole song. It is, in my opinion, the quintessential contemporary Easter song.
I think David Phelps has a range of 4 octaves. One of the best tenors ever.
This concert was 2002 after 9/11 and David would have been 33 years old. He and his wife Lori were born October 21, 1969 but David lets everyone know he was born first, lol. 😂 🎶🎼🎹🎵
LOL! Yes, he does. He commented once at a concert I was at that he was born before Lori that day "so I'm older and that makes me the boss in the family. " He grinned that little grin of his then lowered his voice and said, " Lori didn't hear me say that, did she?" She was up front working the merch table and definitely heard it. LOL! They're such great partners in life.

First met Guy Penrod about 50 yrs ago when my family sang at his dad's church in Las Cruces, NM. We were both about 10 and he could sing then. The only difference now is that he maintained his high notes while I turned into a bass. Lots of memories.
I know you. Didn't your family sing together? The Singing Payne Family. Mom played the piano, Dad, you, a brother, was his name David? And your older sister named Judy. Your Dad would always apologize for the last name of Payne and laughingly say he hoped it wasn't a pain listening to you all. You all came to our church in Stamford, Texas many times!!!
@brendarobinson2154 That would be correct. We lived in Abilene. For about 2 yrs my sister taught school in Stamford. When she got married, her name changed to Hassell. My dad said she went from being a Payne to being a Hassell.
@kennypayne9259 That is so cool. Your Dad was always so funny. A great sense of humor. Judy was a little older than I was and she and I developed a friendship and would hang out after the services. Usually when you guys came we always had lunch prepared in the fellowship hall. So glad to catch up with you. Your family was a blessing to me and my family. @brendarobinson2154 I remember being there when Jesse Morton was there. Man that's been a looong time ago. Judy just turned 74 last week. She and Jimmy live down by Houston and me and family live in Bellville, about an hr outside of Houston.
@@kennypayne9259 Jesse Morton is still pastoring there. He lost his wife, Vicki, to Covid when it first hit the US. He's continued to pastor alone. Vicki was one of my best friends and I look forward to seeing her again when my race is run. I'll tell Bro. Jesse that I talked to you. I speak to him every 2 or 3 months. I live near Brownwood, Texas. Tell Judy I send her my best wishes. You all take care!!

Last big note from David. Notice a young Jason Crabb behind David, doing this 😮. It’s funny. Ironically several years later, Jason has the same 😮, when David sings He’s Alive at tent revival. You guys did a reaction to that song.
David and Guy are my favorite singers hands down!
The people on stage behind the GVB are all from the gospel music field, either as soloists or in groups of their own. Most from Southern Gospel and some from Contemporary Christian.
We’ve been to the Gaithers concerts a couple times and love this group together. David we’ve seen solo at least 4 times, his voice is phenomenal!

Line up is: David Phelps, Wes Hampton, Guy Penrod, Bill Gaither. The great pianist Anthony Burger is no longer with us. He passed away on a Gaither Cruise to Alaska while on board, 02/22/2006. He was one of a kind. The release date of this was 2002. They also performed this song at THE WHITE HOUSE FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA.

Hi kids, God Bless from Easton, PA. I was Blessed to be at this concert when this was taped. I was with my wife and youngest daughter. This was January of 2002 at Carnegie Hall in NYC. Being there was a truly God Blessed experience. The concert was 5 hours long of this kind of music. It was a taping for two Gaither Music DVD's. Check out Whitley Phipps rendition of Amazing Grace from this concert, you will be blown away. God Bless.

Guy Penrod (grey haired guy) has 8 children , seven boys and one girl. He is often referred to as "Father Abraham" in southern gospel circles! Guy has been singing with the Vocal Band for many years and also has done solo work as well. One of my favorite songs that the Vocal Band does with Guy taking the lead is "The Baptism of Jessie Taylor".
This is a great song and moving performance. ☝🙌
