Thanks for playing and reacting to "Slow Train" by Bob Dylan. My favorite verse is "People starving and thirsting, grain elevators are bursting, Oh, you know it costs more to store the food than it do to give it, They say lose your inhibitions, Follow your own ambitions, They talk about a life of brotherly love, show me someone who knows how to live it, There’s a slow, slow train comin’ up around the bend". Take care.

Can't tell you how much I enjoy seeing you discover Dylan. As you have very astutely noticed, he is inspired by heaven to write his words. All of his songs are a form of gospel, and he is truly knocking on heaven's door. He has never sold his soul. I listened to the interview where he was asked the question, and he did not say a word about selling his soul to the devil. I have seen him deliberately allow people to get the wrong idea about him. He seems to enjoy it. As he put it so clearly, I can quote him: ....'the dust of rumors covers me, but if the arrow is sharp, and the point is slick, it can pierce through dust no matter how thick.' Dylan has more albums than any other artist that ever lived, many of them just emerging. He wants his audience to have sharp points, blunt points and camp followers can piss off. Thanks so much for revealing this man to your listeners. Peace and Blessings. ethermail

Hi Harri, it was an inspired choice for the Nobel committee to award him the Nobel Prize for Literature. My understanding is that this award isn't given merely on the quality of the writing, but rather for the influence of a body of work. Dylan really was the voice of a generation, during the Vietnam War and beyond.

These three "Christian Period" albums from Dylan are among his most underrated and misunderstood. Some of his best songwriting imo. Also the use of religious themes in older Dylan songs is very prevalent just not normally discussed. The whole Christian Rock and pop genre really took off after these albums. Producers thought there wasn't any money in it. Then they saw the splits and how many Christians bought the albums. It was only after this that you get the rise of the Christian Rock and Metal bands.

His song " Pressing On" from Saved and "Every Grain of Sand" from Shot of Love are gemstones of his musical output. If you skip these albums because of your " progressive" close mindedness, youll be missing some of his best and most rebellious heartfelt work.👍🌠👍

The train actually arrived 21 years ago, on September 11th!!! And!! Dylan released an album on that day, 9/11/2001!! It's titled "Love and theft". In the song titled "Mississippi" he writes "city's just a jungle, trapped in the heart of it, trying to get away.... the sky is full of fire, and the pain is pouring down". In another song on that album "High water" he writes "coffins are dropping in the street like balloons made out lead". He could not have written more perfect imagery of the events of that day.
I'm not sure if he wrote "High water" but the inclusion of it in that album is still inspired, just as much as the words in "Mississippi". Imho, also at the end of "Mississippi" he writes "stick with me anyway, things should start to get interesting right about now".
There are also acoustic versions of the song where his vocals are better. The album version is electric, and his were starting to slip by that time.

Dylan is at his best when he is coming on like a prophet. This was often taken to the point of lunacy in the 60s when people were looking to him for direction. So when he was just serving up love songs they were disappointed. On this he is doing a bit of New Testament prophesying instead of Old Trstament so what was the gripe: critics of the time.? . With the wind in his sails Dylan can deliver his warning visions like no other singer

Yes, it is wonderfully executed, mastersinger, lyrics, every element of the music, all of them geniuses in their own right, who doesn't want to play with Bob Dylan. On the "Christian" theme, maybe conversion played a role, but I like to see it as "inspired by the stories and the consequences". He is the 13th apostle, writing his own gospel 2000 years later for all of us to enjoy and weigh our attitudes, behavior and decisions. Do we again have lost it?

The voice is integral... and beneficial. Lots of others, particularly female artists, have covered songs more prettily voiced, and they are fantastic. But his voice is crucial in Dylan originals.
