While you're at it, you should probably watch his other videos on the topic when making guidelines for the actual react channel itself. It's well researched and conveyed. That level of effort (a total of ~5 hours) seems warranted if you're planning on making a whole ass channel.
Big, long-time fan. Disappointed with how you guys addressed this. Darkviperau has done a huge amount to shift the conversation about react content. I suspect that that many of the ethical considerations you're grappling with would have come to you by osmosis via subs or team members who have watched Darkviper's content and put his ideas to you in their own words. Definitely owe him a full watch of his video on your announcement, and I'd recommend some of his other videos on the subject as well. As an aside, I think if you consume the full gamut of his content on this subject, I suspect you'll come to the conclusion that truly 'ethical' react content is not the quick, easy, low-effort, high-yield content you're aiming for with this push.

Yeah. It's either a poorly framed joke for the segment of doing a reaction to something without watching it at all or an exceedingly lazy production effort for the WAN show this week. Somebody needs to hit the reset button on the drift toward ridiculousness over the last couple of weeks.

As they talk about I think last week, merch messages are an amazing addition and spicing thing up with some rapid fire topic is in my opinion a nice idea, when done probably, but the prep word definitely need improvement. Both from the WAN writers and obviously from Linus. He maybe should have just recognised the dark viper video and postponed the discussion to a later point in time, when he had more knowledge about the actual content of the video

DarkViperAU was definitely praising you in that video and agreeing with what you guys said on the previous WAN Show. It was really sad to see him misunderstood like that.

@@Fernando-ek8jp I don't mean "criticise" in the sense of "attack", but in the sense of "discuss its merits". In hindsight, that was poorly phrased. My specific point is that the things Linus responds to have little to do with the points Viper actually made, which is, by itself, incredibly frustrating, as Linus himself has repeatedly pointed out on this exact show. He absolutely *hates* it when people put words in his mouth, and he repeatedly points out that people should listen to what he *actually* says before responding. Linus actually complains about the content ID thing in this very video, where he got reactions to something he didn't do, which is the *exact same thing* he's doing to DarkViper. Finally, Linus *did* say a bunch of kind of passive-aggressive things, like "I don't know what the point of bringing that up is." Linus, you don't even know in what context he brought it up!
@@adrianmalkovich7101 And that's what I got as well: he wasn't really addressing Viper at all, he was talking about react videos and some of the talking points surrounding it. The only representation of any kind I got about Viper was that he cares about the topic and made a video addressing Linus, other than that I don't know what his points are. It was a mistake to make Viper's video the first topic, he could have had the same exact talking points without Viper's video even existing. You also have to remember that Viper is pretty irrelevant to all of this tbh. Linus isn't basing his decisions on Viper's approval or credibility, but on his own perspective (and his colleagues, to be fair) and that of the community. If he wanted to address Viper, he should have actually watched the video. The thing is that I don't think he cared much about what Viper had to say, the mistake was organizing the show as if he did.
@@Fernando-ek8jp Matt isn't irrelevant at all. Linus says in this very WAN show how beholden he is to do right by his own community and that if he ever even gives a hint of going against the community, he feels the very real consequences of that. There is a lot of overlap between Matt's and Linus' community, otherwise these comments wouldn't look like they do. Most of the top comments here are people disappointed in Linus for being unfair to Matt, so clearly, a lot of people here like Matt and agree, at least to some extent, with his points. DarkviperAU might be a smaller channel but he has made huge waves with his anti-reaction essays and videos. He has changed a lot of minds in a lot of different communities. So while Linus is not looking for approval from Matt, he is looking for approval of Linus fans. And a lot of us were influenced by Matt.

Ignoring Matt's video that got discussed today, his whole series about this topic is a worthwhile watch, especially for the person that is involved in creating that new channel. It's not about obeying what he says, but giving it a fair thought.

The revenue share thing has been something I've been fighting for since the early 2010s. Imagine how many people would love to use popular music in their videos without losing ALL of their monetization to a copyright claim. Music is such a small piece of most of our videos that it's asinine for it to take 100% of our revenue. But I would gladly support many of my favorite artists for a share of my pennies (which is better than they are gonna get from me listening on spotify).
I've been following the channel for a really long time and I generally feel you both are very fair with your views even if I disagree, but I feel this was just... not it. You can get a better idea about the video by reading comments than watching it? really? then I went to watch darkviper's video (on 2x like with everything else) and it was not the video I thought it'd be from what you talked about on this show. How hard would it be to take 10 minutes to go watch it first? If not, put it off for next week?
I don't think he's claiming to get a better idea on the entire contents of a video. I think he's saying that reading the comments is a much more accurate and maybe even a quicker way of understanding what the positives and negatives of a video are in the eyes of the community. Thus you get a better idea of what's actually important about the video, and what the viewers think the video is about. As content creators, it makes perfect sense why they are more concerned about the community's perceptions rather than other content creators opinions

@@sivansharma5027 As Marv said, it's not that difficult to watch a twenty minute video. Reading the comments on a video is like reading the reviews of a book. If you're deciding on whether or not to watch the video (or buy the book) the comments (or reviews) are a great way to get a sense for it. However, if you were to write a full-length paper criticizing the book, you should read it and know it very well. Same goes for Linus in this case. He was responding to a video, live, in front of a massive audience. Going off of the comments is a sub par approach when it comes to things of this tier.
@@marvnch I think it is too much to ask if you don't have that sort of time... He's a ridiculously busy person no? He's got a family and a business. He's got dozens of employees and an endless list of videos he's supposed to watch... I mean think about ltt videos, how much of the video is someone telling you raw facts or giving their opinions? And how much is intro, adverts, outro, random jokes, the word 'the', segues to the next topic, silent B roll, the camera person moving to position... When you read, you can skim past the useless words in a sentence, like the word 'the' haha it's much faster than even 2x speed
How can you make a statement on content you yourself have not seen? Oh wait... that was the entire argument DarkviperAU was making. You'd know if you had seen the content yourself.
To be fair and balanced™, Linus didn't make a statement on the content he didn't watch. The only statements made about the video were made by someone who _did_ watch it.

I mean I was gonna listen to Wan tonight but fell asleep and was just gonna listen at work tomorrow. Got up to pee and saw the huge post from the dude they're apparently poorly discussing and am getting a pretty good understanding from the comments lol.
Thing is, what Linus said isn't entirely negative because he doesn't know what he's replying to... Which is the problem because what he was supposedly replying to wasn't negative at all, it was optimistically neutral or even positive about the new channel (if such a channel has to exist, this is how you'd do it).

For the react channel, it would be cool to see you guys react to old hot takes or news where you were like this is where things are going! And then being like well this is how it actually went
20 minutes is a lot of time when I can just send a new hire to do it and I can scroll through the comment section for 40 minutes and know more about the video than the video does. Obviously a joke, Linus should really have known this wasn't a good idea
@@Wickedonezz in fairness, the whole 3 hours wasnt just ranting about DV, but you're right, Linus could've literally live reacted, which in this case would've lead to Linus adding value to the video, and in the end would've had less people upset with Linus
Yeah like you can get a *lot* out of the comments section, you can use it as a rough gauge on whether a video is worth watching or what the audience's general response to the video is, maybe even see a few knowledgeable members give their less-than-amateur opinions, but if you wanna see what the video is saying just *watch it*
@@patrickhector I’ll be real, I’m guilty of reading comments over watching videos aswell. Now of course, I still watch the videos prior to talking about them or if I don’t see the video I clarify that (like now, where I’ve only watched the first bit as per the timestamp guys timestamps) and only talk about the things I know.
Linus literally last week: I'm still thinking about shadow banning comments because they so often miss the point entirely. Linus this week: I'm only going to take context from comments since they give a good oversight.
You're taking a complex system and simplifying it down to this. What's the purpose of your comment? You can both have really stupid comments AND be able to get good feedback and deeper understanding from the comments section. There are many different kinds of people in the comments section.
@@41chemist19 Linus has legit talked about removing comments to essentially stop misinformation from spreading so solely basing your arguments on some random person's comments about some other person's comments is very counter intuitive. There are many LTT videos with comments that have nothing to do with the video, it wouldn't make sense for me to use them as an argument against LTT, hell Linus has called them out in the past.
Dang my bosses would NEVER say it was the new guy who fucked up. Because he's new and it's your job to make sure he's doing it properly. It's a process mistake not any individual I feel like Linus often doesn't take personal responsibility over a lot of his business problems. There is always some reason why or justification thrown into the eventual apologies but it doesn't feel genuine
Especially since, no show notes were going to be sufficient to the primary source. Even if you had a really good staffer or writer who took meticulous notes, it was never going to translate well. Honestly this is one of the most poorly organized podcast efforts I've ever seen from anyone.
EDIT/UPDATE: Linus has said in the pinned comment he will be responding to the criticism next Friday! After watching DarkViperAU's video and what Linus has said, here are the main counterarguments to Linus I can think of: 1) DarkViper didn't claim that "reaction content cannot possibly be ethical." He was referring to a specific type of reaction content, the low effort, profitable content that Linus himself detests. This is a major point, as most, if not all of the reaction content Linus said he was planning on making either was high effort/original enough, paid the creator of the original, or already was related to Linus/ the channel. 2) The claim against reaction content (again, the low effort kind) DarkViperAU was making was NOT that the content would hurt him specifically, but rather that it would take away views/impressions from creators/videos of original (and ethical) content. The crux is that the reaction would not only take away from the person who made the video getting reacted to, but also the RUclips ecosystem as a whole. That unethical content creators are profiting off of the work and harm of more ethical creators (and viewers, in turn, are negatively affected as they get served less original content overall). 3) DarkViperAu praised your reaction content idea because he believes that it wouldn't be the low effort, solely for profit reaction content both him and Linus despise. The main question of the video (the title) is if reaction content can be ethical. If I'm understanding DarkViper correctly, I think his stance is one where there is ethical reaction content. However, you have to take the content being used for a reaction and adding enough of your own originallity to the video to make it ethical (or pay whoever made the original content). Unfortunately, the vast majority of reaction content uses the entirety or majority of original content completely seperate from the reactor, and don't add nearly enough to make the content make it distinct from the original (effectively replacing it in the eyes of the algorithm, and thus RUclips would favor the reaction channel's content as opposed to the original). 4) Please watch a video before responding to it, don't just read the comments. It can entirely prevent misunderstandings and misrepresentations such as this. I think not responding at all would've actually been better than this, as now a number of people have an unjustified disfavorable impression of DarkViperAU just for him stating his opinion, and one I think Linus would completely agree with. DarkViper has already had plenty of trouble with people not even watching his arguments and just going with what they've heard from others. Perpetuating this by advocating viewers to judge videos by their comment section only clogs serious debate and conversation on the topic. I might add more points if I see or think of any more.
Honestly, I got a favorable opinion of Viper from Linus. I got a far more disfavorable impression by those acting as if Linus had called Viper an idiot. Yours is one of the better comments, you're actually addressing the issues

Since you guys are only concerned about "COMMENTS" hopefully see your own "COMMENTS" And actually watch the full video and realise what was their point of view. It's not always about the clicks.

@@The_Viktor_Reznov Comments are great at getting a general idea of what the video is about and the reception by the creator's community. Looking just at comments is useful when you want to quickly decide if you want to watch the video or not. When it comes to actually understanding what the video is saying especially the nuances, comments are... rather less valuable as a tool.
On the Locked Apple device thing, if they are enrolled in an MDM (if a org like school isn’t using one they should be because it’s saves time and money) it can easily be setup to auto deactivate the lock once removed from the MDM, which is easy to do remotely.
I really hope it does. Making response to a video you didn't watch is really close to lazy reactions, I was unpleasantly surprised when I heard linus say "i didn't watch the video itself"

Y'all probably just gave DarkviperAU a mental breakdown. He has talked repeatedly about how pretty much every negative comment on his anti-react-videos begins with "I didn't watch the video but ..." I also feel like it kinda got lost that his video was not supposed to be a callout. He has been actively trying to make people aware of the harm of reaction content in general for a long time. And since he also occasionally talks about the WAN show, his viewers very much expected to hear his opinion on your new channel. While he obviously isn't happy about more reaction content, he has very much held his judgement until we see what you do with the channel. You also kinda misinterpreted the unethical point. Its not just that one party might not consent or feels pressured into it, its that regardless of consent, reaction content its often immoral. An original video might have taken weeks of work, but a reacter only needs to sit there for 15min watching it. Both get the same amount of value, but only one party has to put in effort. Of cause you can absolutely make moral reaction content, by only taking relevant parts of the original work and/or truly transforming it, but most of the content we are seeing is just people leeching of others. Honestly you should just watch his main anti react video. Its like an hour long but covers pretty much everything you can think of for that topic.
@@leeroyjenkins0 you see that's exactly the problem. You as well as Luke and Linus didn't watch the video. In the video Darkviper is actually quite positive. He completely acknowledges that LTT seem to want to go for a high effort, well edited and ethical kind of reaction channel. Stuff that would clearly fall under fair use. So while completely original content might still be preferable, what they are suggesting still seems to be quite reasonable. What Darkviper is against is people sitting on stream for 6h a day watching RUclips videos and then uploading those "reactions" in full on their RUclips channel. Edit: Also he didn't react to the wan show, he talked about/responded to the wan show. Which would have been obvious if you had watched the video.
Here's a fun exercise: Figure out how many Xboxes going from default sleep mode to full shutdown overnight it would take to save enough grid power to fully charge a Tesla overnight. Then let viewers guess. The closest one without going over gets an LTT merch item of your choosing. I'll prematurely guess that it would take the power used by a *million* Xboxes in sleep mode overnight to charge that Tesla overnight.
Alternate title. I REACT to a video without watching it! This is the most "my time is more valuable than yours" take I've heard in a long time from Linus. And whoever wrote that summary of DarkViper's responsive video is not a skilled listener or writer. Probably more apt to put them on reaction content so they can turn their brain fully off.
If that's the kind of react content Linus' react channel will be, I can see the money he's gonna spend on it now. It's the smoke rolling out of the chimney.
The writer must have been either biase, incompetent or straight up lazy, for real. Either "I can't show my boss' idea in bad spotlight" or "I have no idea what I am doing" or "I don't give a fuck, whatever". I don't see any other explanation.
Don't blame this on the writer. He might be biased, sure, but that's human. It's on Linus to simply take that summary and run with it instead of making an effort to properly inform himself to form an opinion on someone else's comments. There is already a risk of misunderstandings in communication between two people, imagine unnecessarily putting another layer to dilute what was said between yourself and the source and thinking "Yep, that's a sensible and efficient way to to this".
Meh, I was too lazy to watch this video, so I just read the comments. The comments suggest you should have watched the video before you commented on it..... The idea that reading the comments section of a video is a substitute for watching the video is monumentally stupid, and you just proved that it doesn't work.
In economics there is a concept called "alternative cost". Easy example, if you eat pasta for lunch today, an alternative cost is that you didn't eat a burger. When you watch YT (as you are now) you do it for entertainment, but for Linus it is work. To keep a healthy work/life balance, he would have to watch this 20-30 min video at work, at it would probably tak at the least 1h if he would make notes etc. So now the question is, what is Linus alternative cost to spend 1h doing this? He has said in the past that he is usually the bottle neck to a lot of the production, that even that he has a lot of employees he is the limiting factor in how much content they can produce. So that 1h spent might create a bottleneck where 15-20 people are "waiting for him". The alternative cost for Linus to watch the video by himself might be in the range of 400-1000$, but not only that, it might also have created a situation where 20 ppl had to do overtime to meet the production schedule, negatively impacting their lifes and the life of those peoples families as well. I got no insight and just made all this up, but it is a plausible scenario and might put a "Just watch it yourself" in a bit of a different perspective.
I cannot believe you didn't watch his video before recording this. (I've read the pinned comment though, so glad you did end up watching it. I also really hope Matto decides to get on the show and talk in person.) I implore you to watch his playlist about reaction content too. It's a big time commitment, but worth it.
Don't just rely on your writer to put out claims because most of what you said was misinterpreted. I think you should watch the video before hating on Darkviper, who actually created something thoughtful and accurate.
Saying they had a writer (a new writer at that) summarise the content for them sounds like pre-emptively shifting the blame. It doesn't matter how well or how poorly they might have summarised the video for Linus; he still spent longer discussing it than it would have taken to watch it.
Correct, I thought the same last week about the Samsung patent portion. The thought that a display in a certain formfactor wasn't what is patentable and that they shouldn't have the right to hold displays on the basis of 'it "might" infringe on the patent for a subpixel arrangement, didn't even cross Luke's mind because they just didn't inform themselves on the topic nor did Dan apparently. Linus is so reliant on the rather nebulous writing in the doc, that I wish at least he would call him out on certain incorrect things.
Linus, I respect you, but judging someone's video solely on comments seems ridiculous. Comments can lead you to a bias that you may not form if you listen with a blank slate. You mention making mistakes with other creators but you still can't seem to learn from them.
True, you a video could be “Now I really like this person and I understand what they’re doing, but in general I don’t think it’s good” and the comments will be “so he’s saying he doesn’t think what you’re doing is good” and it just takes away from the whole thing

Man...I like LTT and Linus specifically, but that was probably the worst possible way to address this. I get it, Linus has stuff to do. And to a degree, I understand that at some point one has to rely on delegating things to employees because from a business perspective, that time one would spend doing stuff like this would be inefficient. But this is DEFINITELY one the times where Linus really should have taken the time to prepare himself properly for talking about something. And if you can't find the time, just do not talk about it. Sure, the topic would've come up in chat, but it would have been a simple matter of saying "Well, I haven't seen the video, so I won't be commenting on it right now". That, and only that, would have been the ethical thing to handle this other than watching the video yourself.
The biggest issue with the T2 chip is it's primary function is not security or privacy related. It's to tie parts to devices to prevent repair by anyone who isn't them. It's secondary function is to encrypt/decrypt the storage. When you first power on a macbook, imac, mac mini or iphone the very first thing that chip does is verify that all the parts it is paired to have serial numbers that match what are paired to it, if anomalies exist they disable features after that it then does the security thing.
Man this really sucks, i have been following DarkViperAU and ltt for years now and he has definitely been a viewer for longer than me for whatever thats worth. He recently started his war against reaction content making everyone of the 7 or 8 vidoes extremely well argued but then would get hateful brainless comments from the legions of reaction content views who never watched the video. Which became more and more of a thorn in his side. And now after all these years he made a video about ltt and the person who he has spoken so well of in his streams and he put in a good light in the video while still making his point. Didn't.. watch... The video. If you sent a team of spies with the mission of identifying how to cut this man down, well this is exactly what you would do. And really hope you speak on it again after watching it.

Not watching the video because comments are enough. Kinda weird for Linus to bring up darkviperau's video but not watched it. He missed really key elements to the arguments that were brought up. Yes he's busy but if he's going to respond to a video he hasn't watched and going off someone else's word how can he have a discussion about this morally grey topic in the first place.
What you call a bidet is actually standard here in Turkey, just not with warm water and retracting nozzles and whatnot, instead there is a small outlet of water that at the backwall of the WC that is connected to a small faucet. You open it, wash your butt, use of hands is optional at that point, use regular toilet paper to do a final "safety check" and dry-up and you are done. I am absolutely disgusted with how westerners in general do not use running water for their businesses. I mean there is no way that "everything" is cleaned even if you use a wet-wipe (well if you use ten sure but one or two could never clean your rear end) let alone toilet paper. RE: Apple Activation Lock. I've recently had to deal with this headache on a company owned device having "Find My" enabled by a previous user. From my research you can only remove it by 1. contacting previous user and asking them to remove device from their account 2. contacting Apple with proof of purchase and jumping through phone trees 3. your company using some sort of management tool and you restore the device using Apple Configurator 2 (requires a second Apple computer) and then unlock the device with a bypass code

As a long time viewer (3+ years), I've never seen Linus this down bad. You didn't even watch DarkViperAU's video, and then commented on it. This is the type of thing I thought YOU would discourage. Reaction channels are the lowest of lows, often stealing content that other people have worked very hard on and just talking about it, adding no real value to the original content... I am not a fan of any reaction channels. In fact, I actually click the 'do not recommend this channel' button every time I get one in my feed
Your approach to reaction content (prioritizing quality and transformation) is good, but you did harm with this segment. It might not seem like that big a deal to comment on Dark Viper's video without watching it, but he has been misunderstood and misquoted on this topic for so long and by so many people that it has had a negative impact on his outlook on life. I'd strongly encourage you to watch his video on the topic. He cares about RUclips and creators. Dark Viper wants original content to be rewarded more than abusive reactors (who selfishly consume other's work without effort or transformation).

Luke: settings > video quality preferences > higher quality preferred. It always defaults to 1080p for me. Also, Birdbuddy shipped a couple months ago. My mom has one and it works pretty well.

While you're at it, you should probably watch his other videos on the topic when making guidelines for the actual react channel itself. It's well researched and conveyed. That level of effort (a total of ~5 hours) seems warranted if you're planning on making a whole ass channel.
Big, long-time fan. Disappointed with how you guys addressed this. Darkviperau has done a huge amount to shift the conversation about react content. I suspect that that many of the ethical considerations you're grappling with would have come to you by osmosis via subs or team members who have watched Darkviper's content and put his ideas to you in their own words. Definitely owe him a full watch of his video on your announcement, and I'd recommend some of his other videos on the subject as well.
As an aside, I think if you consume the full gamut of his content on this subject, I suspect you'll come to the conclusion that truly 'ethical' react content is not the quick, easy, low-effort, high-yield content you're aiming for with this push.

My specific point is that the things Linus responds to have little to do with the points Viper actually made, which is, by itself, incredibly frustrating, as Linus himself has repeatedly pointed out on this exact show. He absolutely *hates* it when people put words in his mouth, and he repeatedly points out that people should listen to what he *actually* says before responding.
Linus actually complains about the content ID thing in this very video, where he got reactions to something he didn't do, which is the *exact same thing* he's doing to DarkViper.
Finally, Linus *did* say a bunch of kind of passive-aggressive things, like "I don't know what the point of bringing that up is." Linus, you don't even know in what context he brought it up!

The only representation of any kind I got about Viper was that he cares about the topic and made a video addressing Linus, other than that I don't know what his points are.
It was a mistake to make Viper's video the first topic, he could have had the same exact talking points without Viper's video even existing. You also have to remember that Viper is pretty irrelevant to all of this tbh. Linus isn't basing his decisions on Viper's approval or credibility, but on his own perspective (and his colleagues, to be fair) and that of the community.
If he wanted to address Viper, he should have actually watched the video. The thing is that I don't think he cared much about what Viper had to say, the mistake was organizing the show as if he did.

Linus says in this very WAN show how beholden he is to do right by his own community and that if he ever even gives a hint of going against the community, he feels the very real consequences of that. There is a lot of overlap between Matt's and Linus' community, otherwise these comments wouldn't look like they do. Most of the top comments here are people disappointed in Linus for being unfair to Matt, so clearly, a lot of people here like Matt and agree, at least to some extent, with his points. DarkviperAU might be a smaller channel but he has made huge waves with his anti-reaction essays and videos. He has changed a lot of minds in a lot of different communities. So while Linus is not looking for approval from Matt, he is looking for approval of Linus fans. And a lot of us were influenced by Matt.

The revenue share thing has been something I've been fighting for since the early 2010s. Imagine how many people would love to use popular music in their videos without losing ALL of their monetization to a copyright claim. Music is such a small piece of most of our videos that it's asinine for it to take 100% of our revenue. But I would gladly support many of my favorite artists for a share of my pennies (which is better than they are gonna get from me listening on spotify).
I've been following the channel for a really long time and I generally feel you both are very fair with your views even if I disagree, but I feel this was just... not it. You can get a better idea about the video by reading comments than watching it? really? then I went to watch darkviper's video (on 2x like with everything else) and it was not the video I thought it'd be from what you talked about on this show. How hard would it be to take 10 minutes to go watch it first? If not, put it off for next week?

I don't think he's claiming to get a better idea on the entire contents of a video. I think he's saying that reading the comments is a much more accurate and maybe even a quicker way of understanding what the positives and negatives of a video are in the eyes of the community.
Thus you get a better idea of what's actually important about the video, and what the viewers think the video is about. As content creators, it makes perfect sense why they are more concerned about the community's perceptions rather than other content creators opinions

If you're deciding on whether or not to watch the video (or buy the book) the comments (or reviews) are a great way to get a sense for it. However, if you were to write a full-length paper criticizing the book, you should read it and know it very well. Same goes for Linus in this case. He was responding to a video, live, in front of a massive audience. Going off of the comments is a sub par approach when it comes to things of this tier.

Thing is, what Linus said isn't entirely negative because he doesn't know what he's replying to... Which is the problem because what he was supposedly replying to wasn't negative at all, it was optimistically neutral or even positive about the new channel (if such a channel has to exist, this is how you'd do it).

After watching DarkViperAU's video and what Linus has said, here are the main counterarguments to Linus I can think of:
1) DarkViper didn't claim that "reaction content cannot possibly be ethical." He was referring to a specific type of reaction content, the low effort, profitable content that Linus himself detests. This is a major point, as most, if not all of the reaction content Linus said he was planning on making either was high effort/original enough, paid the creator of the original, or already was related to Linus/ the channel.
2) The claim against reaction content (again, the low effort kind) DarkViperAU was making was NOT that the content would hurt him specifically, but rather that it would take away views/impressions from creators/videos of original (and ethical) content. The crux is that the reaction would not only take away from the person who made the video getting reacted to, but also the RUclips ecosystem as a whole. That unethical content creators are profiting off of the work and harm of more ethical creators (and viewers, in turn, are negatively affected as they get served less original content overall).
3) DarkViperAu praised your reaction content idea because he believes that it wouldn't be the low effort, solely for profit reaction content both him and Linus despise. The main question of the video (the title) is if reaction content can be ethical. If I'm understanding DarkViper correctly, I think his stance is one where there is ethical reaction content. However, you have to take the content being used for a reaction and adding enough of your own originallity to the video to make it ethical (or pay whoever made the original content). Unfortunately, the vast majority of reaction content uses the entirety or majority of original content completely seperate from the reactor, and don't add nearly enough to make the content make it distinct from the original (effectively replacing it in the eyes of the algorithm, and thus RUclips would favor the reaction channel's content as opposed to the original).
4) Please watch a video before responding to it, don't just read the comments. It can entirely prevent misunderstandings and misrepresentations such as this. I think not responding at all would've actually been better than this, as now a number of people have an unjustified disfavorable impression of DarkViperAU just for him stating his opinion, and one I think Linus would completely agree with. DarkViper has already had plenty of trouble with people not even watching his arguments and just going with what they've heard from others. Perpetuating this by advocating viewers to judge videos by their comment section only clogs serious debate and conversation on the topic.
I might add more points if I see or think of any more.

When it comes to actually understanding what the video is saying especially the nuances, comments are... rather less valuable as a tool.
On the Locked Apple device thing, if they are enrolled in an MDM (if a org like school isn’t using one they should be because it’s saves time and money) it can easily be setup to auto deactivate the lock once removed from the MDM, which is easy to do remotely.

Y'all probably just gave DarkviperAU a mental breakdown. He has talked repeatedly about how pretty much every negative comment on his anti-react-videos begins with "I didn't watch the video but ..."
I also feel like it kinda got lost that his video was not supposed to be a callout. He has been actively trying to make people aware of the harm of reaction content in general for a long time. And since he also occasionally talks about the WAN show, his viewers very much expected to hear his opinion on your new channel. While he obviously isn't happy about more reaction content, he has very much held his judgement until we see what you do with the channel.
You also kinda misinterpreted the unethical point. Its not just that one party might not consent or feels pressured into it, its that regardless of consent, reaction content its often immoral. An original video might have taken weeks of work, but a reacter only needs to sit there for 15min watching it. Both get the same amount of value, but only one party has to put in effort.
Of cause you can absolutely make moral reaction content, by only taking relevant parts of the original work and/or truly transforming it, but most of the content we are seeing is just people leeching of others.
Honestly you should just watch his main anti react video. Its like an hour long but covers pretty much everything you can think of for that topic.
Regarding the unethical part. Matt often talks about something that people seem to never get or talk about. Finite attention economy.
That was his main disgusting goal from the last show - tons of clicks for virtually no work of their own. It's shitty.

He completely acknowledges that LTT seem to want to go for a high effort, well edited and ethical kind of reaction channel. Stuff that would clearly fall under fair use.
So while completely original content might still be preferable, what they are suggesting still seems to be quite reasonable.
What Darkviper is against is people sitting on stream for 6h a day watching RUclips videos and then uploading those "reactions" in full on their RUclips channel.

And whoever wrote that summary of DarkViper's responsive video is not a skilled listener or writer. Probably more apt to put them on reaction content so they can turn their brain fully off.

The writer must have been either biase, incompetent or straight up lazy, for real. Either "I can't show my boss' idea in bad spotlight" or "I have no idea what I am doing" or "I don't give a fuck, whatever". I don't see any other explanation.
Don't blame this on the writer. He might be biased, sure, but that's human. It's on Linus to simply take that summary and run with it instead of making an effort to properly inform himself to form an opinion on someone else's comments. There is already a risk of misunderstandings in communication between two people, imagine unnecessarily putting another layer to dilute what was said between yourself and the source and thinking "Yep, that's a sensible and efficient way to to this".

In economics there is a concept called "alternative cost". Easy example, if you eat pasta for lunch today, an alternative cost is that you didn't eat a burger. When you watch YT (as you are now) you do it for entertainment, but for Linus it is work. To keep a healthy work/life balance, he would have to watch this 20-30 min video at work, at it would probably tak at the least 1h if he would make notes etc. So now the question is, what is Linus alternative cost to spend 1h doing this?
He has said in the past that he is usually the bottle neck to a lot of the production, that even that he has a lot of employees he is the limiting factor in how much content they can produce. So that 1h spent might create a bottleneck where 15-20 people are "waiting for him".
The alternative cost for Linus to watch the video by himself might be in the range of 400-1000$, but not only that, it might also have created a situation where 20 ppl had to do overtime to meet the production schedule, negatively impacting their lifes and the life of those peoples families as well.
I got no insight and just made all this up, but it is a plausible scenario and might put a "Just watch it yourself" in a bit of a different perspective.

Don't just rely on your writer to put out claims because most of what you said was misinterpreted. I think you should watch the video before hating on Darkviper, who actually created something thoughtful and accurate.
Saying they had a writer (a new writer at that) summarise the content for them sounds like pre-emptively shifting the blame. It doesn't matter how well or how poorly they might have summarised the video for Linus; he still spent longer discussing it than it would have taken to watch it.

The thought that a display in a certain formfactor wasn't what is patentable and that they shouldn't have the right to hold displays on the basis of 'it "might" infringe on the patent for a subpixel arrangement, didn't even cross Luke's mind because they just didn't inform themselves on the topic nor did Dan apparently.

Linus, I respect you, but judging someone's video solely on comments seems ridiculous. Comments can lead you to a bias that you may not form if you listen with a blank slate. You mention making mistakes with other creators but you still can't seem to learn from them.

Man...I like LTT and Linus specifically, but that was probably the worst possible way to address this. I get it, Linus has stuff to do. And to a degree, I understand that at some point one has to rely on delegating things to employees because from a business perspective, that time one would spend doing stuff like this would be inefficient. But this is DEFINITELY one the times where Linus really should have taken the time to prepare himself properly for talking about something. And if you can't find the time, just do not talk about it. Sure, the topic would've come up in chat, but it would have been a simple matter of saying "Well, I haven't seen the video, so I won't be commenting on it right now". That, and only that, would have been the ethical thing to handle this other than watching the video yourself.

The biggest issue with the T2 chip is it's primary function is not security or privacy related. It's to tie parts to devices to prevent repair by anyone who isn't them. It's secondary function is to encrypt/decrypt the storage. When you first power on a macbook, imac, mac mini or iphone the very first thing that chip does is verify that all the parts it is paired to have serial numbers that match what are paired to it, if anomalies exist they disable features after that it then does the security thing.

Man this really sucks, i have been following DarkViperAU and ltt for years now and he has definitely been a viewer for longer than me for whatever thats worth.
He recently started his war against reaction content making everyone of the 7 or 8 vidoes extremely well argued but then would get hateful brainless comments from the legions of reaction content views who never watched the video. Which became more and more of a thorn in his side.
And now after all these years he made a video about ltt and the person who he has spoken so well of in his streams and he put in a good light in the video while still making his point. Didn't.. watch... The video.
If you sent a team of spies with the mission of identifying how to cut this man down, well this is exactly what you would do. And really hope you speak on it again after watching it.

Kinda weird for Linus to bring up darkviperau's video but not watched it. He missed really key elements to the arguments that were brought up. Yes he's busy but if he's going to respond to a video he hasn't watched and going off someone else's word how can he have a discussion about this morally grey topic in the first place.
What you call a bidet is actually standard here in Turkey, just not with warm water and retracting nozzles and whatnot, instead there is a small outlet of water that at the backwall of the WC that is connected to a small faucet. You open it, wash your butt, use of hands is optional at that point, use regular toilet paper to do a final "safety check" and dry-up and you are done.

RE: Apple Activation Lock. I've recently had to deal with this headache on a company owned device having "Find My" enabled by a previous user. From my research you can only remove it by
1. contacting previous user and asking them to remove device from their account
2. contacting Apple with proof of purchase and jumping through phone trees
3. your company using some sort of management tool and you restore the device using Apple Configurator 2 (requires a second Apple computer) and then unlock the device with a bypass code

Did people seriously expect countless lore from video games, novels, comics, and shows pre-Disney to stay canon? Even if Disney didn’t own it, Fox wouldn’t have cared to disregard them either.
