" The kids don’t need screen time, "
'Ight ima stop you right there, same reasons as above, and also social media and screen time is the future, and you cant deny that. You have some valid points, screen time 24/7 isn't good, but that's impossible, and also (most) kid's attention spans are short and they could get bored after a while, and is nobody going to talk about the productivity of screen time? its not always about addiction, screen time can be actually really useful if your kids/siblings are on apps that help them, for me roblox and Minecraft, games I still play, helped encourage me to learn to read and type and write so that I can interact, I'm actually the fastest typer in my class because of that, and also apps like duolingo, abc mouse, etc, can help education. Screen time is both good and bad, the screen isn't the issue, the things they do on it is.

    Man here's the thing:
what happens is parents have become lazy when they see a thing to look after their kids themselves. I'm glad i was raised in a time when tech was just becoming how it was today with the internet so i never really "could" get too addicted to it at a young age. while I do use the internet a lot, probably 5-6 hours a day at most if you include every device, i am still not addicted to it as i dont have a sort of necesity for it and get angry/depressed from losing it. Kids who are currently growing up with the devices looking after them get angry and upset when they get it taken away from them but also at the same time if you do an experiment like this they'll get bored of it after a while.
what parents of today should be doing (as a former child who grew up with a calmer interntet) is to **NOT** raise their childeren under 5 or 6 with tech and rely on it, even if it means having to take care of them while you cook or clean. if they are literately begging you to watch tv, watch it with them or atleast be with them on the sofa and make sure they're ok and everything.
as a side note: let your kids be adventerous more, let them be in the kitchen with you, let them spend more time in the garden even if its cold, let them mess the house up with their toys and then force them to clean it up as. some parents dont let their kids do certain stuff which ends up making themso bored out of their mind that they end up almost unintentionally force them to get an addiction to tech.

It can be both a good and bad thing. 'Screens' can teach ya a lot of things. Even games teach you a lot.
But spending a lot of time on it can lead to a bad addiction. Like you can end up being anemic, and can become blind over time. Also, since a lot of radiation comes from devices, they can make someone have cancer.
Also, staying up late at night constantly for years can eventually make someone senile, and can harm the body in other ways over time too, it can literally kill people.

I feel like I did pretty well with screens growing up. My little brother and I didn't have tablets until I was about eight years old, and we could spend two thirty-minute tablet times on those per day, but I was allowed to stay on longer if I was reading an e-book (which I did very often). I was also allowed to spend thirty minutes on my mom's computer every day if I asked her first and let her know which sites I was visiting. I mostly did the American Girl doll website and this other one called KidsHealth. I got my own laptop when I was eleven or twelve, mostly for school, and even then, it was an old one of my dad's that we had in the closet. I didn't have a phone until I was fourteen, and I'm not resentful about that at all. I'm really glad my parents held back on devices because I ended up (I think) more imaginative and creative than if I had been on screens for 2+ hours a day as a little kid.

The problem with saying "cut down screen time" is that nobody offers any suggestions about what the kids are supposed to be doing instead. There's only so much outside and reading they can do.
I would love to cut my teenage son's screen time down, but when he asks me what else there is to do I honestly don't know what to tell him. He doesn't enjoy reading or playing alone outside. He doesn't have any friends that live nearby, he doesn't draw or do art, he doesn't like puzzles...etc. Wth am I supposed to suggest he do?!
I can't really relate to their struggle since screens just weren't an option when I was a kid and I developed lots of other interests really early on because of that. As a teen, I can agree with this mentality. I want to be on the computer more **because** It is so limiting. Parents are scared of their kids being addicted, so they give them restrictions. Because of those restrictions, kids want to spend more time on screens. If it was a normal activity like playing outside, people would have a different mindset toward it.

This story is misleading because 48 hours was far too short to account for "forbidden fruit syndrome" When you suddenly give unlimited screen time to a kid who has had it strictly limited for most of their lives, they will initially overindulge to satisfy all the pent up craving from all the times screens were previously withheld from them. Given enough time, things will balance out. It's ironic that the more you withhold something desired from someone, the more they want it because you turn it into a forbidden fruit. Also, the kids probably knew the change was not permanent so wanted to take full advantage while it lasted.

Idk how they come up with these screen time limits, because there are a lot of people who play a lot if video games or watch a lot of TV and do just fine. For example, I play a lot of video games most days and I had straight As last year (I'm 16), I play golf and have a 1st degree black belt in Taekwondo as of writing this, and I am going to test for my 2nd degree soon. My younger sisters play just as much as I do as well, and they also have good grades and are on their school soccer team.

This is extremely inaccurate. Kids actually learn more from the internet than school. The internet literally has all the information on the planet. You don’t need to limit their time, just make sure they do something educational every once in a while. None of these tests are fool proof because every kid is different.

what is there for kids to enjoy in the summer? especially in the suburbs, the street traffic is dangerous, you cannot meaningfully go out and explore, malls are shutting down and the forests are being slowly bulldozed over.. and all this would only apply to the kids who's parents would allow them to roam on their own anyway, which is very few to begin with. you've replaced villages with suburban sprawl and you've replaced the hills with industrial parks. what do you expect them to do?

The biggest problem is that they won't eat much of they have unlimited access to the tablets. But it does help prevent them from fighting with each other non stop, screaming and getting on your last nerve. It helps reduce parental stress, which is good for kids.

My stepson uses it 12 to 16 hrs a day even on school days, I try get his dad to see that he is isolated he does not communicate well all he does is eat sleep watch tv & phone, the minute he wakes up in the morning before school and the minute he gets on the school bus for home, his attention span is very short, he won’t even go out to ride his bike or play ball 🏀 nothing, he doesn’t even take out the trash or even straighten up his room. He don’t even show appreciation or passion for anything. That’s basically his routine for 365 days of the year, did I mention he 11 yrs old , I try to get his dad to see what it does to him but he won’t do anything because that’s what his son wants and it’s driving me crazy.

It's not an addiction. Giving your child unlimited screen time helps prepare them for the advanced technological future that lies ahead of them.

  • @atticusmcfly
    @atticusmcfly Год назад +1

This societal trend of kids being addicted to devices is frightening. Encourage your kids to read. If they have energy to burn, tell them to go kick a soccer ball around the yard together or jump rope or something other than mindnumbing technological distractions. Try out some hobbies. Buy a cheap piano. Sign them up for some classes in various fields until they find something they can't get enough of. Get creative. Be present. Invest in them instead of trying to keep them content with nonsense. If they want to use the internet, monitor what they're doing. Have one TV and one ipad in the house and watch together instead of everybody going into different rooms. DISCIPLINE YOUR CHILDREN. SET SOME STANDARDS FOR THEM AND YOURSELVES. IT ALL STARTS IN THE HOME. BE A PARENT.

Kids don’t go outside these days because there’s nothing for them out there, back in the olden days kids weren’t under strict supervision by their parents and so they could look forward to going outside and playing with other kids, nowadays parents expect children to enjoy going for a walk as much as playing on the computerbook.
